Abstract:Landau damping of head-tail modes in bunches due to spreads in the tune shift can be a deciding factor for beam stability. We demonstrate that the coherent tune shifts due to reactive impedances can enhance the space-charge induced damping and change the stability thresholds (here, a reactive impedance implies the imaginary part of the impedance of both signs). For example, high damping rates at strong space-charge, or damping of the $k=0$ mode, can be possible. It is shown and explained, how the negative reactive impedances (causing negative coherent tune shifts similarly to the effect of space-charge) can enhance the Landau damping, while the positive coherent tune shifts have an opposite effect. It is shown that the damping rate is a function of the coherent mode position in the incoherent spectrum, in accordance with the concept of the interaction of a collective mode with resonant particles. We present an analytical model, which allows for quantitative predictions of damping thresholds for different head-tail modes, for arbitrary space-charge and coherent tune-shift conditions, as it is verified using particle tracking simulations.
Simulation of longitudinal Landau damping in bunches with space charge

Abstract:For a single hadron bunch affected by longitudinal space charge in a stationary rf bucket we analyze the frequency spectrum close to the expected loss of Landau damping for the lowest order dipole mode. For different bunch intensity parameters we obtain the bunch oscillation spectrum from a conventional longitudinal particle tracking code with a grid-based space charge solver. We validate selected results against a grid-less space charge solver. We highlight the importance of the choice of the cut-off parameter $h_c$ in the space charge impedance for the long-term accuracy of grid-based schemes. For typical bunch parameters in an ion synchrotron at injection energies we find that the branching point, where the dipole mode frequency emerges from the incoherent synchrotron frequency spectrum, as well as the damping of the dipole mode do not depend on $h_c$, chosen well below the actual value for realistic beam pipes.

Abstract:Progress on the Intensity Frontier of high energy physics critically depends on record high intensity charged particles accelerators. Beams in such machines become operationally limited by coherent beam instabilities, particularly enhanced in the regime of strong space charge (SC). Usual methods to control the instabilities, such as octupole magnets, beam feedback dampers and employment of chromatic effects, become less effective and insufficient. In [1] it was proposed to employ electron lenses for introduction of sufficient spread in particle oscillation frequencies needed for beam stabilization and in [2] it was shown that electron lenses are uniquely effective for Landau damping of transverse beam instabilities in high energy particle accelerators and their employment does not compromise incoherent (single particle) stability, dynamic aperture and the beam lifetime. Here we consider an important issue of effectiveness of the Landau damping with electron lenses in space-charge dominated beams and demonstrate that the desired stability can be assured with proper choice of the electron beam parameters and current distributions.

Abstract:Collisionless damping of geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) excited in the large safety factor (q) region of a tokamak plasma is investigated taking into account the effects of finite ion Larmor radius and guiding-center drift orbit width as well as parallel electric field contributions. A corresponding analytical expression for the damping rate including higher-order harmonics of ion transit resonances is systematically derived and agrees well with numerical results in its validity regime.

Abstract:The paper focuses on two issues important for design and operation of bunch-by-bunch transverse damper in a very large hadron collider, where fast damping is required to suppress beam instabilities and noise induced emittance growth. The first issue is associated with kick variation along a bunch which affects the damping of head-tail modes. The second issue is associated with affect of damper noise on the instability threshold.

Abstract:Bosonic collective modes are ubiquitous in metals, but over a wide range of energy and momenta suffer from Landau damping, decaying into the continuum of particle-hole excitations. Here we point out that interactions can suppress this decay, protecting a finite fraction of the total spectral weight associated with the collective mode, e.g. a plasmon. The underlying mechanism is level repulsion between a discrete mode and the continuum. We demonstrate the effect using a number of simplified models of strongly correlated Fermi-liquid metals, including a ``solvable" random flavor model in the large$-N$ limit. We discuss in detail the possibility of observing such an avoided decay for plasmons in (moiré) graphene-like systems.

Abstract:Synchro-betatron coupling in a proton storage ring with electron cooling was studied experimentally by modulating a transverse dipole field close to the synchrotron frequency. The combination of the electron cooling and transverse field modulation on the synchrotron oscillation is equivalent to a dissipative parametric resonant system. The proton bunch was observed to split longitudinally into two pieces, or beamlets, converging toward attractors of the dissipative system. These phenomena might be important in understanding the effect of ground vibration on the Superconducting Super Collider beam, and the effect of power supply ripple on the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider beam.

Abstract:Free vibration of a beam with multiple arbitrarily placed lateral viscous dampers is investigated to gain insight into the intrinsic dynamic features of non-proportional damped systems. In terms of virtual boundary condition method, complex modes of a damper-beam system are achieved, and the solution is also suitable for the beams that have different boundary conditions. The features of the wave numbers satisfying the frequency equation were discussed in theory. The orthogonality analysis conducted in this paper provides two orthogonality conditions for complex modes. Pseudoundamped natural frequencies, damping ratios and complex modes are surveyed via numerical study. The analysis on the evolution of complex modes shows that the increasing damping would lead to over damped modes, and the mode shape that corresponds to the small one of a pair of real-valued natural frequencies is close to the static deformation shape of a beam subjected to static forces located at the positions of the dampers. For the rest modes that would never be over damped with increasing damping, the mode shapes and corresponding psuedoundamped natural frequencies will converge to that of a beam with rolling supports located at where dampers are placed. The exact solution of free vibration of a multiple-span beam is presented in addition.
Damping Of Geodesic Acoustic Mode By Trapped Electrons

Abstract:We study the Landau resonance between geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) and trapped electrons as a GAM's collisionless damping. The assumption of (omega) over bar (de) << omega(be))be is adopted. The damping rate induced by trapped electrons is found to be an increasing function of q. In low q range, circulating-ion-induced damping rate is larger than that induced by trapped electrons. As q increases, the latter becomes larger than the former. The reason is that trapped electrons' resonant velocity is close to v(te) from the lower side, whiles circulating ions' resonant velocity gets bigger further from v(ti). So the number of resonant trapped electrons increases, whiles the number of resonant circulating ions decreases. The amplitude of damping rate induced by trapped electrons in the edge plasma can be comparable to that induced by circulating ions in the low q range. Another phenomenon we found is that in the chosen range of epsilon, the damping caused by trapped electrons has a maximum value at point epsilon(q) for different q. The reason is that as epsilon is close to epsilon(q), trapped electorns' resonant velocity is close to v(te).

Abstract:As two counter-rotating beams interact they can give rise to coherent dipole modes. Under the influence of impedance these coherent beam-beam modes can couple to higher order head-tail modes and lead to strong instabilities. A fully self-consistent approach including beam-beam and impedance was used to characterize this new coupled mode instability and study possible cures such as a transverse damper and high chromaticity.

Abstract:We study the Landau damping in Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture at finite temperature. We find that at low temperature, the Landau damping rate will be exponentially suppressed at both the BCS side and the BEC side of Fermi superfluid. The momentum dependence of the damping rate is obtained, and it is quite different from the BCS side to the BEC side. The relations between our result and collective mode experiment in the recently realized Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture are also discussed.

Abstract:Observations of transversal coronal loop oscillations very often show the excitation and damping of oscillations in groups of coronal loops rather than in individual and isolated structures. We present results on the oscillatory properties (periods, damping rates, and spatial distribution of perturbations) for resonantly damped oscillations in a system of two inhomogeneous coronal slabs and compare them to the properties found in single slab loop models. A system of two identical coronal loops is modeled, in Cartesian geometry, as being composed by two density enhancements. The linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave equations for oblique propagation of waves are solved and the damping of the different solutions, due to the transversal inhomogeneity of the density profile, is computed. The physics of the obtained results is analyzed by an examination of the perturbed physical variables. We find that, due to the interaction between the loops, the normal modes of oscillation present in a single slab split into symmetric and antisymmetric oscillations when a system of two identical slabs is considered. The frequencies of these solutions may differ from the single slab results when the distance between the loops is of the order of a few slab widths. Oblique propagation of waves weakens this interaction, since solutions become more confined to the edges of the slabs. The damping is strong for surface-like oscillations, while sausage body-like solutions are unaffected. For some solutions, and small slab separations, the damping in a system of two loops differs substantially from the damping of a single loop.

Stabilizing influence of axial momentum spread on the two-stream instability in intense heavy ion beams

Abstract:This paper makes use of the Vlasov–Maxwell equations to describe the electron–ion two-stream instability driven by the directed axial motion of a high-intensity ion beam propagating through a stationary population of (unwanted) background electrons in the acceleration region or beam transport lines. The ion beam is treated as continuous in the z-direction, and the electrons are electrostatically confined in the transverse direction by the space-charge potential produced by the excess ion charge. The analysis is carried out for arbitrary beam intensity, consistent with transverse confinement of the beam particles, and arbitrary fractional charge neutralization by the background electrons. For the case of overlapping step-function ion and electron density profiles, corresponding to Kapchinskij–Vladimirskij (KV) electron and ion distributions in the transverse direction, detailed stability properties are calculated including parallel kinetic effects over a wide range of system parameters for dipole perturbations with azimuthal mode number ℓ=1. The instability growth rate is found to increase with increasing beam intensity, increasing fractional charge neutralization, and decreasing proximity of the conducting wall. For space-charge-dominated beams, it is shown that Landau damping associated with a modest axial momentum spread of the beam ions and background electrons has a strong stabilizing influence on the two-stream instability.
Space-charge transport limits of ion beams in periodic quadrupole focusing channels

Abstract:It has been empirically observed in both experiments and particle-in-cell simulations that space-charge-dominated beams suffer strong growth in statistical phase-space area (degraded quality) and particle losses in alternating gradient quadrupole transport channels when the undepressed phase advance sigma_0 increases beyond about 85 degrees per lattice period. Although this criterion has been used extensively in practical designs of strong focusing intense beam transport lattices, the origin of the limit has not been understood. We propose a mechanism for the transport limit resulting from classes of halo particle resonances near the core of the beam that allow near-edge particles to rapidly increase in oscillation amplitude when the space-charge intensity and the flutter of the matched beam envelope are both sufficiently large. When coupled with a diffuse beam edge and/or perturbations internal to the beam core that can drive particles outside the edge, this mechanism can result in large and rapid halo-driven increases in the statistical phase-space area of the beam, lost particles, and degraded transport. A core-particle model is applied to parametrically analyze this process. Extensive self-consistent particle in cell simulations are employed to better quantify space-charge limit and verify core-particle model predictions.

Abstract:Imposing angular momentum to a particle beam increases its stability against perturbations from space charge [Y.-L. Cheon et al. , Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 25 , 064002 (2022)]. In order to fully explore this potential, proper matching of intense coupled beams along regular lattices is mandatory. Herein, a novel procedure assuring matched transport is described and benchmarked through simulations. The concept of matched transport along periodic lattices has been extended from uncoupled beams to those with considerable coupling between the two transverse degrees of freedom. Abstract:This paper takes into account the differences in the number and the velocity distribution of moleculae impacting on two sides of a resonant microbeam and modifies the velocity distribution of the moleculae given by Kadar et al. [Z. Kadar, W. Kindt, A. Bossche, J. Mollinger, Quality factor of torsional resonators in the low-pressure region, Sensors and Actuators A, 53 (1996) 299-303]. By a modified model, the damping characteristics of the resonant microbeam vibrating in vacuum are analysed. New results reduce the deviation between the experimental data and the old theoretical values by 1.5 times, therefore the new model will be beneficial to design the optimal structural parameters of resonant microbeam. This paper also considers the coupling effect between the intrinsic damping and the impact of moleculae in the high vacuum, so a break point occurring in this region by means of the old method is eliminated, and the theoretical values show good agreement with the experimental ones. Nonequilibrium Damping of Collective Motion of Homogeneous Cold Fermi Condensates with Feshbach Resonances

Abstract:Collisionless damping of a condensate of cold Fermi atoms, whose scattering is controlled by a Feshbach resonance, is explored throughout the BCS and BEC regimes when small perturbations on its phase and amplitude modes are turned on to drive the system slightly out of equilibrium. Using a one-loop effective action, we first recreate the known result that for a broad resonance the amplitude of the condensate decays as $t^{-1/2}$ at late times in the BCS regime whereas it decays as $t^{-3/2}$ in the BEC regime. We then examine the case of an idealized narrow resonance, and find that this collective mode decays as $t^{-3/2}$ throughout both the BCS and BEC regimes. Although this seems to contradict earlier results that damping is identical for both broad and narrow resonances, the breakdown of the narrow resonance limit restores this universal behaviour. More measureably, the phase perturbation may give a shift on the saturated value to which the collective amplitude mode decays, which vanishes only in the deep BCS regime when the phase and amplitude modes are decoupled.

Abstract:This study is motivated by observations of coordinated transverse displacements in neighboring solar active region loops, addressing specifically how the behavior of kink motions in straight two-tube equilibria is impacted by tube interactions and tube cross-sectional shapes.We work with linear, ideal, pressureless magnetohydrodynamics. Axially standing kink motions are examined as an initial value problem for transversely structured equilibria involving two identical, field-aligned, density-enhanced tubes with elliptic cross-sections (elliptic tubes). Continuously nonuniform layers are implemented around both tube boundaries. We numerically follow the system response to external velocity drivers, largely focusing on the quasi-mode stage of internal flows to derive the pertinent periods and damping times. The periods and damping times we derive for two-circular-tube setups justify available modal results found with the T-matrix approach. Regardless of cross-sectional shapes, our nonuniform layers feature the development of small-scale shears and energy accumulation around Alfven resonances, indicative of resonant absorption and phase-mixing. As with two-circular-tube systems, our configurational symmetries make it still possible to classify lower-order kink motions by the polarization and symmetric properties of the internal flows; hence such mode labels as $S_x$ and $A_x$. However, the periods and damping times for two-elliptic-tube setups further depend on cross-sectional aspect ratios, with $A_x$ motions occasionally damped less rapidly than $S_x$ motions. We find uncertainties up to $\sim 20\%$ ($\sim 50\%$) for the axial Alfven time (the inhomogeneity lengthscale) if the periods (damping times) computed for two-elliptic-tube setups are seismologically inverted with canonical theories for isolated circular tubes.
