Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments
Abstract:DC microgrids have gained significant attention over the past years, emerging as a reliable, efficient, and adaptable structure to interconnect distributed energy resources into power grids. In microgrid structures, the interactions among the individually designed converters, their control loops, and other components such as loads, line impedances, and the ac utility grid can yield the system to instability. Therefore, choosing a suitable topology and the impact of disturbances on a dc microgrid must be thoroughly examined and understood to guarantee stable operation and robust performance. Thus, this paper deals with the full-order models and dynamic assessments for dc microgrids working in off-grid and grid-connected modes. Distinct line-impedance topologies are considered to build three types of dc microgrid architectures: the single-bus, the radial bus, and the ring bus. Small-signal equations of each component are obtained, and the full-order models, including all the system states, are established. Thus, a proper investigation of the dc microgrids dynamics is allowed through their eigenvalues, which are calculated for analyzing the small-signal stability. From numerical results, the performance of each topology is highlighted based on the sensitivity studies, and comparative analyses involving technical-operational aspects are provided.
