Abstract:The Gram spectrahedron of a real form $f\in\mathbb{R}[\underline{x}]_{2d}$ parametrizes all sum of squares representations of $f$. It is a compact, convex, semi-algebraic set, and we study its facial structure in the case of ternary quartics, i.e. $f\in\mathbb{R}[x,y,z]_4$. We show that the Gram spectrahedron of every smooth ternary quartic has faces of dimension 2, and generically none of dimension 1. We complete the proof that the so called Steiner graph of every smooth quartic is isomorphic to $K_4\coprod K_4$. Moreover, we show that the Gram spectrahedron of a generic psd ternary quartic contains points of all ranks in the Pataki interval.

Abstract:Let $f\in\Sigma_{n,2d}$ be a sum of squares. The Gram spectrahedron of $f$ is a compact, convex set that parametrizes all sum of squares representations of $f$. Let $F\subseteq\mathrm{Gram}(f)$ be a face of its Gram spectrahedron. We are interested in upper bounds for the dimension of $F$. We show that this upper bound can be determined combinatorially. As it turns out, if the degree is large enough, a face realizing this bound, is a face of a Gram spectrahedron such that the form $f$ is singular. Thus we are also interested in finding better bounds whenever the form $f$ is smooth.

Abstract:Some sum of squares (SOS) polynomials admit decomposition certificates, or positive semidefinite Gram matrices, with additional structure. In this work, we use the structure of Gram matrices to relate the representation theory of $SL(2)$ to $SO(2)$. Informally, we prove that if $p$ is a sum of squares and lives in some of the invariant subspaces of $SO(2)$, then it has a positive semidefinite Gram matrix that lives in certain invariant subspaces of $SL(2)$. The tools used in the proof construction are of independent interest.

Abstract:We study polynomial systems with prescribed monomial supports in the Cox ring of a toric variety built from a complete polyhedral fan. We present combinatorial formulas for the dimension of their associated subvarieties under genericity assumptions on the coefficients of the polynomials. Using these formulas, we identify at which degrees generic systems in polytopal algebras form regular sequences. Our motivation comes from sparse elimination theory, where knowing the expected dimension of these subvarieties leads to specialized algorithms and to large speed-ups for solving sparse polynomial systems. As a special case, we classify the degrees at which regular sequences defined by weighted homogeneous polynomials can be found, answering an open question in the Gröbner bases literature. We also show that deciding whether a sparse system is generically a regular sequence in a polytopal algebra is hard from the point of view of theoretical computational complexity.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 103-131, March 2024. Grigoriev (2001) and Laurent (2003) independently showed that the sum-of-squares hierarchy of semidefinite programs does not exactly represent the hypercube [math] until degree at least [math] of the hierarchy. Laurent also observed that the pseudomoment matrices her proof constructs appear to have surprisingly simple and recursively structured spectra as [math] increases. While several new proofs of the Grigoriev–Laurent lower bound have since appeared, Laurent's observations have remained unproved. We give yet another, representation-theoretic proof of the lower bound, which also yields exact formulas for the eigenvalues of the Grigoriev–Laurent pseudomoments. Using these, we prove and elaborate on Laurent's observations. Our proof shows that the Grigoriev–Laurent pseudomoments are a special case of a Gram matrix construction of pseudomoments proposed by Bandeira and Kunisky (2020). In the course of the proof, we also find a new realization of the irreducible representations of the symmetric group corresponding to Young diagrams with two rows, as spaces of multivariate polynomials that are multiharmonic with respect to an equilateral simplex.

Abstract:A binary tensor consists of 2 n entries arranged into hypercube format 2 × 2 × ⋯ × 2. There are n ways to flatten such a tensor into a matrix of size 2 × 2 n-1. For each flattening, M, we take the determinant of its Gram matrix, det(MMT ). We consider the map that sends a tensor to its n-tuple of Gram determinants. We propose a semi-algebraic characterization of the image of this map. This offers an answer to a question raised by Hackbusch and Uschmajew concerning the higher-order singular values of tensors.

Abstract:Given a linear map on the vector space of symmetric matrices, every fiber intersected with the set of positive semidefinite matrices is a spectrahedron. Using the notion of the fiber body we can build the average over all such fibers and thereby construct a compact, convex set, the fiber body. We show how to determine the dimensions of faces and normal cones to study the boundary structure of the fiber body given that we know about the boundary of the fibers. We use this to study the fiber body of Gram spectrahedra in the case of binary sextics and ternary quartics and find a large amount of structure on the fiber body. We prove that the fiber body in the case of binary sextics has exactly one face with a full-dimensional normal cone, whereas the Gram spectrahedron of a generic positive binary sextic has four such points. The fiber body in the case of ternary quartics changes drastically.

Abstract:A theorem concerning the Gram matrix of a general set of vectors: a vector polyhedron, is described. Generally speaking, the demonstration is performed by means of a non-negative vector definition: the variance vector, which can be associated to any vector polyhedron belonging to a vector space where a scalar product can be defined. The complete sum of the variance vector, the condensed variance index of any polyhedron, permits to construct the Gram matrix theorem.

Abstract:Given a partition $\lambda$ of a number $k$, it is known that by adding a long line of length $n-k$, the dimension of the associated representation of $S_{n}$ is an integer-valued polynomial of degree $k$ in $n$. We show that its expansion in the binomial basis is bounded by the length of $\lambda$, and that the resulting coefficient of index $h$, with alternating signs, counts the standard Young tableaux of shape $\lambda$ in which a given collection of consecutive $h$ numbers lie in increasing rows. We also construct bijections in order to demonstare explicitly that this number is indeed independent of the set of consecutive $h$ numbers used.

Multivariate Bernstein-type Polynomials of Finitely Generated D-Modules

Abstract:We generalize the Gröbner basis method for free D-modules to the case of several term orderings induced by a partition of the set of basic variables. Using this generalized Gröbner basis technique we prove the existence and give a method of computation of a dimension polynomial in several variables associated with a finitely generated D-module. We show that this dimension polynomial carries more invariants of a D-module than the classical (univariate) Bernstein polynomial. We also show that the introduced multivariate dimension polynomial can be used for characterization of holonomic D-modules.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of representing a multivariate polynomial as the determinant of a definite (monic) symmetric/Hermitian linear matrix polynomial (LMP). Such a polynomial is known as determinantal polynomial. Determinantal polynomials can characterize the feasible sets of semidefinite programming problems that motivates us to deal with this problem. We introduce the notion of generalized mixed discriminant of matrices which translates the determinantal representation problem into computing a point of a real variety of a specified ideal. We develop an algorithm to determine such a determinantal representation of a bivariate polynomial of degree $d$. Then we propose a heuristic method to obtain a monic symmetric determinantal representation of a multivariate polynomial of degree $d$.

Factoring multivariate polynomials over hyperfields and the multivariable Descartes' problem

Abstract:We develop several notions of multiplicity for linear factors of multivariable polynomials over different arithmetics (hyperfields). The key example is multiplicities over the hyperfield of signs, which encapsulates the arithmetic of $\mathbf{R}/\mathbf{R}_{>0}$. These multiplicities give us various upper and lower bounds on the number of linear factors with a given sign pattern in terms of the signs of the coefficients of the factored polynomial. Using resultants, we can transform a square system of polynomials into a single polynomial whose multiplicities give us bounds on the number of positive solutions to the system. In particular, we are able to re-derive the lower bound of Itenberg and Roy on any potential upper bound for the number of solutions to a system of equations with a given sign pattern. In addition, our techniques also explain a particular counterexample of Li and Wang to Itenberg and Roy's proposed upper bound.

Unique powers-of-forms decompositions from simple Gram spectrahedra

Abstract:We consider simultaneous Waring decompositions: Given forms $ f_d $ of degrees $ kd $, $ (d = 2,3 )$, which admit a representation as $ d $-th power sums of $ k $-forms $ q_1,\ldots,q_m $, when is it possible to reconstruct the addends $ q_1,\ldots,q_m $ from the power sums $ f_d $? Such powers-of-forms decompositions model the moment problem for mixtures of centered Gaussians. The novel approach of this paper is to use semidefinite programming in order to perform a reduction to tensor decomposition. The proposed method works on typical parameter sets at least as long as $ m\leq n-1 $, where $ m $ is the rank of the decomposition and $ n $ is the number of variables. While provably not tight, this analysis still gives the currently best known rank threshold for decomposing third order powers-of-forms, improving on previous work in both asymptotics and constant factors. Our algorithm can produce proofs of uniqueness for specific decompositions. A numerical study is conducted on Gaussian random trace-free quadratics, giving evidence that the success probability converges to $ 1 $ in an average case setting, as long as $ m = n $ and $ n\to \infty $. Some evidence is given that the algorithm also succeeds on instances of rank $ m = \Theta(n^2) $.

Abstract:In this paper we find the number of homogeneous polynomials of degree d such that they vanish on cuspidal modular forms of even weight $m\geq 2$ that form a basis for $S_m(\Gamma_0(N))$. We use these cuspidal forms to embedd $X_0(N)$ to projective space and we find the Hilbert polynomial of the graded ideal of the projective curve that is the image of this embedding.

On the Gram determinants of the Specht modules

Abstract:For every partition $\lambda$ of a positive integer $n$, let $S^{\lambda}$ be the corresponding Specht module of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, and let $\det(\lambda)\in \mathbb Z$ denote the Gram determinant of the canonical bilinear form with respect to the standard basis of $S^{\lambda}$. Writing $\det(\lambda)=m \cdot 2^{a_{\lambda}^{(2)}}$ for integers $a_{\lambda}^{(2)}$ and $m$ with $m$ odd, we show that if the dimension of $S^{\lambda}$ is even, then $a_{\lambda}^{(2)}$ is also even. This confirms a conjecture posed by Richard Parker in the special case of the symmetric groups.

Abstract:We analyze the decomposition problem of multivariate polynomial-exponential functions from truncated series and present new algorithms to compute their decomposition. Using the duality between polynomials and formal power series, we first show how the elements in the dual of an Artinian algebra correspond to polynomial-exponential functions. They are also the solutions of systems of partial differential equations with constant coefficients. We relate their representation to the inverse system of the roots of the characteristic variety. Using the properties of Hankel operators, we establish a correspondence between polynomial exponential series and Artinian Gorenstein algebras. We generalize Kronecker theorem to the multivariate case, by showing that the symbol of a Hankel operator of finite rank is a polynomial-exponential series and by connecting the rank of the Hankel operator with the decomposition of the symbol. A generalization of Prony's approach to multivariate decomposition problems is presented , exploiting eigenvector methods for solving polynomial equations. We show how to compute the frequencies and weights of a minimal polynomial-exponential decomposition , using the first coefficients of the series. A key ingredient of the approach is the flat extension criteria, which leads to a multivariate generalization of a rank condition for a Carath{é}odory-Fej{é}r decomposition of multivariate Hankel matrices. A new algorithm is given to compute a basis of the Artinian Gorenstein algebra, based on a Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process and to decompose polynomial-exponential series. A general framework for the applications of this approach is described and illustrated in different problems. We provide Kronecker-type theorems for convolution operators, showing that a convolution operator (or a cross-correlation operator) is of finite rank, if and only if, its symbol is a polynomial-exponential function, and we relate its rank to the decomposition of its symbol. We also present Kronecker-type theorems for the reconstruction of measures as weighted sums of Dirac measures from moments and for the decomposition of polynomial-exponential functions from values. Finally, we describe an application of this method for the sparse interpolation of polylog functions from values.

String Moduli Spaces and Parabolic Factorizations

Abstract:The symmetric spaces that appear as moduli spaces in string theory and supergravity can be decomposed with explicit metrics using parabolic subgroups. The resulting isometry between the original moduli space and this decomposition can be used to find parametrizations of the moduli. One application is to determine the volume parameter in conformal field moduli spaces for K3 surfaces. Other applications involve simple Dynkin diagram manipulations inducing "going up and down" between symmetric spaces by adding parameters and going to limits respectively. For supersymmetries such as N=6, this involves combinatorics of less familiar "restricted" Dynkin diagrams.

Abstract:Splines are defined as piecewise polynomials on the faces of a polyhedral complex that agree on the intersections of two faces. Splines are used in approximation theory and numerical analysis, with applications in data interpolation, to create smooth curves in computer graphics and to find numerical solutions to partial differential equations. Gilbert, Tymoczko, and Viel generalized the classical splines combinatorially and algebraically: a generalized spline is a vertex labeling of a graph $G$ by elements of the ring so that the difference between the labels of any two adjacent vertices lies in the ideal generated by the corresponding edge label. We study the generalized splines on the planar graphs whose edges are labeled by two-variable polynomials of the form $(ax+by+c)^2$ and whose vertices are labeled by polynomials of degree at most two. In this paper we address the upper-bound conjecture for the dimension of degree-2 splines of smoothness 1. The dimension is expressed in terms of the rank of the extended cycle basis matrix. We also provide a combinatorial algorithm on graphs to compute the rank by contracting certain subgraphs.

Abstract:In this paper, we enumerate parallelogram polycubes according to several parameters. After establishing a relation between Multiple Zeta Function and the Dirichlet generating function of parallelogram polyominoes, we generalize it to the case of parallelogram polycubes. We also give an explicit formula and an ordinary generating function of parallelogram polycubes according to the width, length and depth, by characterizing its projections. Then, these results are generalized to polyhypercubes.
