Abstract:In this paper, we delve into the intricacies of a network architecture enabled by two layers of caches, where users receive their requested content via intermediate helpers connected to a central server. While coded caching in a two-layer hierarchical model has previously demonstrated its potential to enhance data rates when cache capacities are uniform and no coordination exists between users, our work takes a leap further. We introduce the dimension of heterogeneous cache sizes among both the helpers and users, addressing scenarios where the number of popular files can be either less or more than the number of users within the network. Leveraging a recently proposed modified coded caching scheme, combined with a zero-padding technique, we present novel results on data rates, supported by an illustrative example. Our contribution extends to the formulation of two distinct coded schemes within the hierarchical scenario. Furthermore, we optimize the proportions of files and memories allocated to each scheme, facilitating data transfer efficiency and then derive the lower bound for the total rate. Moreover, we demonstrate that the total rate achieved by the proposed heterogeneous approach is lower than that of a homogeneous network with caches equivalent to the minimum cache size present in the homogeneous network. However, it is more than a homogeneous network with the similar average cache size. In addition, we illustrate by proper selection of the proportions of files and memories allocated to each scheme, we can decrease the performance degradation due to the heterogeneity of the network.

Coded Caching for Files with Distinct File Sizes

Abstract:Coded caching can exploit new multicast opportunities even when multiple users request different pieces of content, and thus can significantly reduce the backhaul requirement for serving high-volume content. However, existing studies of coded caching have been limited to the scenarios where all files of interest are of a common size. This work studies the performance limits of coded caching when the file sizes are different. We derive a new lower bound and an achievable upper bound for the worst-case transmission rate under coded caching, and show that these two bounds differ by at most a Θ(log K) factor, where K is the number of users in the system. There are two key novelties in our analysis. First, our lower bound is derived by considering a new cut-set bound where larger files are requested more times. The analysis of this new cut-set bound requires careful concatenation of several entropy inequalities. Compared to a lower bound using standard cut-set arguments, our lower bound is improved by a Θ(log K) factor. Second, our achievable scheme uses a caching probability that increases proportionally with the file size. Compared to schemes that use a common caching probability, the achievable rate of our scheme is reduced by a Θ K/log k 2 factor.
Optimal Decentralized Coded Caching for Heterogeneous Files

Abstract:Caching is a technique to reduce the peak network load by pre-fetching some popular contents at the local caches of end users. Coded caching can facilitate and exploit the coded-multicasting opportunities for users with different demands, resulting in an additional and significant reduction of the peak traffic. However, most existing researches on coded caching are limited by the assumption that all files to be delivered have the same size. We show in this paper that current schemes can only achieve suboptimal performance when the files have different sizes. To address this, we propose a novel optimization strategy for coded caching that minimizes the worst-case transmission rate of multicasting the coded content upon users requests, subject to the storage constraint at the local caches, by the optimal allocation of the caching proportion among heterogeneous files. In order to efficiently solve this problem, we develop a practical algorithm by using the Lagrange multiplier method and the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) approach. Experiment results show that the worst-case transmission rate can be reduced by the proposed scheme compared to state-of-the-art coded caching schemes. It certainly offers an important advantage in the deployment of data delivery systems.

Abstract:We consider a wireless device-to-device caching network where n nodes are placed on a regular grid of area A(n). Each node caches L-C F (coded) bits from a library of size LF bits, where L is the number of files and F is the size of each file. Each node requests a file from the library independently according to a popularity distribution. Under a commonly used "physical model" and Zipf popularity distribution, we characterize the optimal per-node capacity scaling law for extended networks (i.e., A(n) = n). Moreover, we propose a cache-induced hierarchical cooperation scheme and associated cache content placement optimization algorithm to achieve the optimal per-node capacity scaling law. When the path loss exponent alpha < 3, the optimal per-node capacity scaling law achieved by the cache-induced hierarchical cooperation can be significantly better than that achieved by the existing state-of-the-art schemes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that completely characterizes the per-node capacity scaling law for wireless caching networks under the physical model and Zipf distribution with an arbitrary skewness parameter tau. While scaling law analysis yields clean results, it may not accurately reflect the throughput performance of a large network with a finite number of nodes. Therefore, we also analyze the throughput of the proposed cache-induced hierarchical cooperation for networks of practical size. The analysis and simulations verify that cache-induced hierarchical cooperation can also achieve a large throughput gain over the cache-assisted multihop scheme for networks of practical size.
Constructions of Coded Caching Schemes with Flexible Memory Size

Abstract:Coded caching scheme recently has become quite popular in the wireless network due to its effectively reducing the transmission amount (denote such an amount by $R$) during peak traffic times. However to realize a coded caching scheme, each file must be divided into $F$ packets which usually increases the computation complexity of a coded caching scheme. So we prefer to construct a caching scheme that decreases the order of $F$ for practical implementations. In this paper, we construct four classes of new schemes where two classes can significantly reduce the value of $F$ by increasing a little $R$ comparing with the well known scheme proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, and $F$ in the other two classes grows sub-exponentially with $K$ by sacrificing more $R$. It is worth noting that a tradeoff between $R$ and $F$, which is a hot topic in the field of caching scheme, is proposed by our constructions. In addition, our constructions include all the results constructed by Yan et al., (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 63, 5821-5833, 2017) and some main results obtained by Shangguan et al., (arXiv preprint <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1608.03989v1" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1608.03989v1">arXiv:1608.03989v1</a>) as the special cases.

Abstract:We study the problem of coded caching when the server has access to several libraries and each user makes independent requests from every library. The single-library scenario has been well studied and it has been proved that coded caching can significantly improve the delivery rate compared to uncoded caching. In this work we show that when all the libraries have the same number of files, memory-sharing is optimal and the delivery rate cannot be improved via coding across files from different libraries. In this setting, the optimal memory-sharing strategy is one that divides the cache of each user proportional to the size of the files in different libraries. As for the general case, when the number of files in different libraries are arbitrary, we propose an inner-bound based on memory-sharing and an outer-bound based on concatenation of files from different libraries.

Abstract:Coded caching can achieve significant caching gain by leveraging coded multicast for content delivery, which attracts great attentions in recent years. However, the coded multicast delivery design for decentralized coded caching with heterogeneous cache sizes and link rates is still an open problem. To this end, joint-cache-channel (JCC) coding is exploited in this paper. More specifically, a novel coded multicast delivery scheme that explores JCC coding is developed for the practical case with a finite number of packets per file. Instead of directly constructing the conflict graph at each packet level in existing studies, a packet-merging mechanism and a color-merging mechanism are developed to achieve the conflict graph in packet cluster level for coded multicast delivery so as to harvest the performance gain of JCC coding. The information-theoretic analysis of the transmission time via JCC coding is further conducted in the asymptotic regime when the number of packets per file approaches infinity, which provides the theoretical coded caching gain by JCC coding. Simulation results further show that compared to the existing method, the transmission time can be effectively reduced by our proposed scheme.

Abstract:This work studies the coded caching problem in a setting where the users are simultaneously endowed with a private cache and a shared cache. The setting consists of a server connected to a set of users, assisted by a smaller number of helper nodes that are equipped with their own storage. In addition to the helper cache, each user possesses a dedicated cache which is also used to prefetch file contents. Each helper cache can serve an arbitrary number of users, but each user gets served by only one helper cache. We consider two scenarios: (a) the server has no prior information about the user-to-helper cache association, and (b) the server knows the user-to-helper cache association at the placement phase itself. We design centralized coded caching schemes under uncoded placement for the above two settings. For case (b), two schemes are proposed that are optimal in certain memory regimes. Further, a cut-set based lower bound is derived and used to show that one of the proposed schemes for case (b) is optimal in certain memory regime.

A Novel Scheme for Coded Caching with Coded Placement in Small Memory Regime

Abstract:This paper presents a novel achievable scheme for coded caching systems with $N$ files and $K$ users, specifically when $N \leq K$. This new scheme employs linear coding both during the placement phase - where cache contents are linear combinations of files from the library - and the delivery phase. The multi-step delivery phase enables users to decode the cached coded content and eliminate interference effectively. In the small memory regime, the proposed scheme outperforms existing methods, particularly when $K$ and $N$ values are similar, it maintains manageable sub-packetization levels, and operates over a finite field of size $3$ regardless of the system parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, we show how to partition K users in a coded caching domain into L groups to reduce the complexity from O(2(K)) to O(2(3[K/L])). We first show that the negative effects of the heterogeneity of cache sizes and partitioning on coded caching performance neutralize each other, which is the theoretical foundation of our partitioning schemes. We then prove the submodularity of the coded caching traffic volume function, based on which we develop a partition algorithm for minimizing the traffic volume. We show that the approximation ratio of proposed algorithm is better than the state-of-art result. Moreover, we develop a rounding algorithm to obtain the final partition based on Lovasz extension, which resolves the issue of unbalanced partition. We implement our schemes in a testbed and validate our analysis and design with experiment results.

Abstract:Information theoretic analysis of a coded caching system is considered, in which a server with a database of N equal-size files, each F bits long, serves K users. Each user is assumed to have a local cache that can store M files, i.e., capacity of MF bits. Proactive caching to user terminals is considered, in which the caches are filled by the server in advance during the placement phase, without knowing the user requests. Each user requests a single file, and all the requests are satisfied simultaneously through a shared error-free link during the delivery phase. First, centralized coded caching is studied assuming both the number and the identity of the active users in the delivery phase are known by the server during the placement phase. A novel group-based centralized coded caching (GBC) scheme is proposed for a cache capacity of M = N/K. It is shown that this scheme achieves a smaller delivery rate than all the known schemes in the literature. The improvement is then extended to a wider range of cache capacities through memory-sharing between the proposed scheme and other known schemes in the literature. Next, the proposed centralized coded caching idea is exploited in the decentralized setting, in which the identities of the users that participate in the delivery phase are assumed to be unknown during the placement phase. It is shown that the proposed decentralized caching scheme also achieves a delivery rate smaller than the state-of-the-art. Numerical simulations are also presented to corroborate our theoretical results.

Abstract:Coded caching has demonstrated the superiority in mitigating traffic pressure through jointly considering content delivery and storage schemes. However, existing works mainly focus on the situation where users have uniform demands with multiple layer of caches. In this paper, we propose a multilevel hierarchical coded caching scheme when users have nonuniform demands in a multi-hop content delivery network scenario. Specifically, to maintain the symmetry constraint of coded caching we utilize K-means to separate the file set with arbitrary distribution of popularity into several file subsets. We also formulate the Jensen's inequality and derive the upper bound of the transmission rate in each layer. To evaluate the system efficiency, we leverage the open-source Netflix dataset as our file set and conduct an experiment on a content delivery network with two layers of caches. Experimental results demonstrates that our multilevel hierarchical coded caching scheme performs much better than the baseline LFU caching scheme.
Optimized Coded Prefetching Scheme in Hierarchical Cache-Enabled Networks

Abstract:Caching popular content at small base stations (SBSs) of a wireless edge network is a good choice to reduce user request latency and backhaul load. However, an effective coded caching scheme to solve the challenges in hierarchical cacheenabled networks (HCENs), including the limited SBS cache capacity, rich content amount, especially the deployment of coded prefetching, has not yet been fully studied. In this paper, we propose a caching scheme based on coded prefetching and coded transmission in HCENs. In particular, considering the impact of preference of users, the SBSs cache capacity, and the number of contents of coded linear combination, we design a cache probability matrix, where contents is stored at each SBS by linear combination with caching probability. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm including prefetching and transmission is analyzed, the expression of the system average delay is derived, and an optimization problem of minimizing the average delay is established to obtain the optimal cache probability matrix. Finally, the simulation results verify the effectiveness of our coded prefetching caching scheme, which can achieve lower average delay than other caching schemes with uncoded prefetching and coded transmission in HCENs.

Abstract:Coded caching is able to exploit accumulated cache size and hence superior to uncoded caching by distributing different fractions of a file in different nodes. This work investigates coded caching in a large-scale small-cell network (SCN) where the locations of small base stations (SBSs) are modeled by stochastic geometry. We first propose a content delivery framework, where multiple SBSs that cache different coded packets of a desired file transmit concurrently upon a user request and the user decodes the signals using successive interference cancellation (SIC). We characterize the performance of coded caching by two performance metrics, average fractional offloaded traffic (AFOT) and average ergodic rate (AER), for which a closed-form expression and a tractable expression are derived, respectively, in the high signal-to-noise ratio region. We then formulate the coded cache placement problem for AFOT maximization as a multiple-choice knapsack problem (MCKP). By utilizing the analytical properties of AFOT, a greedy but optimal algorithm is proposed. We also consider the coded cache placement problem for AER maximization. By converting this problem into a standard MCKP, a heuristic algorithm is proposed. Analytical and numerical results reveal several design and performance insights of coded caching in conjunction with SIC receiver in interference-limited SCNs.

Abstract:Coded caching is an emerging technique to reduce the data transmission load during the peak-traffic times. In such a scheme, each file in the data center or library is usually divided into a number of packets to pursue a low broadcasting rate based on the designed placements at each user's cache. However, the implementation complexity of this scheme increases as the number of packets increases. It is crucial to design a scheme with a small subpacketization level, while maintaining a relatively low transmission rate. It is known that the design of caches in users (i.e., the placement phase) and broadcasting (i.e., the delivery phase) can be unified in one matrix, namely the placement delivery array (PDA). This paper proposes a novel PDA construction by selecting proper orthogonal arrays (POAs), which generalizes some known constructions but with a more flexible memory size. Based on the proposed PDA construction, an effective transformation is further proposed to enable a coded caching scheme to have a smaller subpacketization level. Moreover, two new coded caching schemes with the coded placement are considered. It is shown that the proposed schemes yield a lower subpacketization level and transmission rate over some existing schemes.

Abstract:Existing decentralized coded caching solutions cannot guarantee small loads in the general scenario with arbitrary file sizes and cache sizes. In this paper, we propose an optimization framework for decentralized coded caching in the general scenario to minimize the worst-case load and average load (under an arbitrary file popularity), respectively. Specifically, we first propose a class of decentralized coded caching schemes for the general scenario, which are specified by a general caching parameter and include several known schemes as special cases. Then, we optimize the caching parameter to minimize the worst-case load and average load, respectively. Each of the two optimization problems is a challenging nonconvex problem with a nondifferentiable objective function. For each optimization problem, we develop an iterative algorithm to obtain a stationary point using techniques for solving Complementary Geometric Programming (GP). We also obtain a low-complexity approximate solution by solving an approximate problem with a differentiable objective function which is an upper bound on the original nondifferentiable one, and characterize the performance loss caused by the approximation. Finally, we present two information-theoretic converse bounds on the worst-case load and average load (under an arbitrary file popularity) in the general scenario, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that provides optimization-based decentralized coded caching schemes and information-theoretic converse bounds for the general scenario.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the coded-caching broadcast network with user cooperation, where a server connects with multiple users and the users can cooperate with each other through a cooperation network. We propose a centralized coded caching scheme based on a new deterministic placement strategy and a parallel delivery strategy. It is shown that the new scheme optimally allocate the communication loads on the server and users, obtaining cooperation gain and parallel gain that greatly reduces the transmission delay. Furthermore, we show that the number of users who parallelly send information should decrease when the users' caching size increases. In other words, letting more users parallelly send information could be harmful. Finally, we derive a constant multiplicative gap between the lower bound and upper bound on the transmission delay, which proves that our scheme is order optimal.

Abstract:The coexistence of multiple types of users in vehicular networks results in diversified service requirements and multiscale content differences, which poses new challenges to reliable content transmission. This paper proposes a hierarchical coded caching framework coupled with coded caching, vehicle-to-everything communications, and non-orthogonal multiple access techniques. We quantify the user request hit ratio under different communication modes and study the hit ratio maximization problem under the constraint of limited communication and caching resources. We propose a two-layer matching based optimization algorithm, including a user association layer in distributed content sharing and a user grouping layer in centralized content requesting. Simulation results verify that the proposed scheme can achieve a balance between hit ratio and transmission time, and meet the requirements of the content sharing scenario with multiscale content files and scalable user density.

Abstract:Coded caching is a technique that promises significant reductions in network traffic by exploiting the multicast opportunities among multiple cache-enabled users. Most works in this area investigate the fundamental performance limits of coded caching from an information-theoretic perspective. In this paper, from a practical perspective, we focus on the design and analysis of the coded caching scheme in large-scale stochastic networks with dynamic traffic. Aiming at the challenges of the large number of users, dynamic packet requests, and distance-dependent interference, the packet caching scheme and packet delivery scheme are jointly designed to ensure the availability of the coded caching gain. To characterize the coded caching performance, the queue dynamic of the packet requests and channel state are first analyzed. Then by combining the successive group decoding theory and stochastic geometry approach, the network interference is characterized and the successful transmission probability of the multicast coded signal is further derived. Moreover, the coded caching scheme is optimized to minimize the average delay of the packet request, which is proved to ensure service fairness and reduce the complexities of network performance analysis. The analytical and numerical results provide useful insights for the provisioning and planning of the coded caching network.
