Abstract:The expression of human art, and supposedly sentient art in general, is modulated by the available rendition, receiving and communication techniques. The components or instruments of these techniques ultimately exhibit a physical, in particular, quantum layer, which in turn translates into physical and technological capacities to comprehend and utilize what is possible in our universe. In this sense, we can apply a sort of Church-Turing thesis to art, or at least to its rendition.

Abstract:Quantum cognition emerged as an important discipline of mathematical psychology during the last two decades. Using abstract analogies between mental phenomena and the formal framework of physical quantum theory, quantum cognition demonstrated its ability to resolve several puzzles from cognitive psychology. Until now, quantum cognition essentially exploited ideas from projective (Hilbert space) geometry, such as quantum probability or quantum similarity. However, many powerful tools provided by physical quantum theory, e.g., symmetry groups have not been utilized in the field of quantum cognition research sofar. Inspired by seminal work by Guerino Mazzola on the symmetries of tonal music, our study aims at elucidating and reconciling static and dynamic tonal attraction phenomena in music psychology within the quantum cognition framework. Based on the fundamental principles of octave equivalence, fifth similarity and transposition symmetry of tonal music that are reflected by the structure of the circle of fifths, we develop different wave function descriptions over this underlying tonal space. We present quantum models for static and dynamic tonal attraction and compare them with traditional computational models in musicology. Our approach replicates and also improves predictions based on symbolic models of music perception.

Abstract:The perception and appreciation of beauty in a musical composition appears as being related to the amount of memory and balance between expectation and surprise. In this study, we use a formal computing tool derived from quantum mechanics and adapted to music, to measure the degree of memory of orchestral music, including Liebestod by R. Wagner. We discuss our results and further lines of research.

Abstract:Recently, theories of quantum have become a novel approach to the semantics of music. In those quantum systems, a musical note is quantized as vectors in Hilbert space, and the musical score is interpreted as a tuple. Based on Hilbert space, quantum systems parse the music in a mathematical way. However, as a new approach, even though theories of quantum can abstract semantics of music, but there remain some questions, such as how to define a state of music and how to define the elements of music composition, especially the performance of music. It turns out to be too difficult to find a solution in quantum theories. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce theories of hypergesture to give an answer. Furthermore, we define accidental space and dynamic space to abstract the information contained in musical symbols. These two spaces indicate the intensity and volume of the music and combine the mathematical form of musical notes with musical meanings. The main motivation of this paper is to bridge the gap between the mathematical musical models and the theories of music.

Abstract:Molecular sonification is the transformation of chemical data into sound and has been used to gain insight into chemical systems and for the creation of contemporary music compositions. The combination of sonification with a virtual reality environment offers potential benefits such as providing a visual frame of reference, an increased sense of immersion, nuanced spatial information through binaural audio cues and ease of interactivity. To explore how strategies developed in sonification research and contemporary electroacoustic music composition can be adapted to virtual reality, the art-science installation ’Quantum’ was created. The multi-media work consists of computer-generated molecules in a virtual space producing sound created via the sonification of nuclear magnetic resonance data. Upon user interaction with different molecules, the overall composition and complexity of the sound world develop. The binaural sound material can migrate back and forth from the molecules to the non-binaural background composition and, depending on user input, develop in terms of timbre, spectral complexity, and gestural content. ‘Quantum’ is an exploration of the combination of sonification and virtual reality and offers first points of discussion that can be elaborated upon in future artworks, games or educational content.

Abstract:Quantum computing is emerging as a promising technology, which is built on the principles of subatomic physics. By the time of writing, fully fledged practical quantum computers are not widely available. But research and development are advancing rapidly. Various software simulators are already available. And a few companies have already started to provide access to quantum hardware via the cloud. These initiatives have enabled experiments with quantum computing to tackle some realistic problems in science; e.g., in chemistry and cryptography. In spite of continuing progress in developing increasingly more sophisticated hardware and software, research in quantum computing has been focusing primarily on developing scientific applications. Up till now there has been virtually no research activity aimed at widening the range of applications of this technology beyond science and engineering. In particular applications for the entertainment industry and creative economies. This article introduces a new field of research, which is referred to as Quantum Computer Music. This research is aimed at the development of quantum computing tools and approaches to creating, performing, listening to and distributing music. The article begins with a brief historical background. Then, it introduces the notion of algorithmic music and presents two quantum computer music systems: a singing voice synthesiser and a musical sequencer based on quantum walk. A primer on quantum computing is also given. The chapter ends with a concluding discussion and advice for further work to develop this new exciting area of research.

Abstract:Correlations between quantum theory and music theory - specifically between principles of quantum computing and musical harmony - can lead to new understandings and new methodologies for music theorists and composers. The quantum principle of superposition is shown to be closely related to different interpretations of musical meaning. Superposition is implemented directly in the authors' simulations of quantum computing, as applied in the decision-making processes of computer-generated music composition.

Abstract:This chapter examines the Variational Quantum Harmonizer, a software tool and musical interface that focuses on the problem of sonification of the minimization steps of Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQA), used for simulating properties of quantum systems and optimization problems assisted by quantum hardware. Particularly, it details the sonification of Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problems using VQA. A flexible design enables its future applications both as a sonification tool for auditory displays in scientific investigation, and as a hybrid quantum-digital musical instrument for artistic endeavours. In turn, sonification can help researchers understand complex systems better and can serve for the training of quantum physics and quantum computing. The VQH structure, including its software implementation, control mechanisms, and sonification mappings are detailed. Moreover, it guides the design of QUBO cost functions in VQH as a music compositional object. The discussion is extended to the implications of applying quantum-assisted simulation in quantum-computer aided composition and live-coding performances. An artistic output is showcased by the piece \textit{Hexagonal Chambers} (Thomas and Itaboraí, 2023).

Abstract:There has been tremendous progress in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for music, in particular for musical composition and access to large databases for commercialisation through the Internet. We are interested in further advancing this field, focusing on composition. In contrast to current black-box AI methods, we are championing an interpretable compositional outlook on generative music systems. In particular, we are importing methods from the Distributional Compositional Categorical (DisCoCat) modelling framework for Natural Language Processing (NLP), motivated by musical grammars. Quantum computing is a nascent technology, which is very likely to impact the music industry in time to come. Thus, we are pioneering a Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP) approach to develop a new generation of intelligent musical systems. This work follows from previous experimental implementations of DisCoCat linguistic models on quantum hardware. In this chapter, we present Quanthoven, the first proof-of-concept ever built, which (a) demonstrates that it is possible to program a quantum computer to learn to classify music that conveys different meanings and (b) illustrates how such a capability might be leveraged to develop a system to compose meaningful pieces of music. After a discussion about our current understanding of music as a communication medium and its relationship to natural language, the chapter focuses on the techniques developed to (a) encode musical compositions as quantum circuits, and (b) design a quantum classifier. The chapter ends with demonstrations of compositions created with the system.
Quanta in sound, the sound of quanta: a voice-informed quantum theoretical perspective on sound

Abstract:Humans have a privileged, embodied way to explore the world of sounds, through vocal imitation. The Quantum Vocal Theory of Sounds (QVTS) starts from the assumption that any sound can be expressed and described as the evolution of a superposition of vocal states, i.e., phonation, turbulence, and supraglottal myoelastic vibrations. The postulates of quantum mechanics, with the notions of observable, measurement, and time evolution of state, provide a model that can be used for sound processing, in both directions of analysis and synthesis. QVTS can give a quantum-theoretic explanation to some auditory streaming phenomena, eventually leading to practical solutions of relevant sound-processing problems, or it can be creatively exploited to manipulate superpositions of sonic elements. Perhaps more importantly, QVTS may be a fertile ground to host a dialogue between physicists, computer scientists, musicians, and sound designers, possibly giving us unheard manifestations of human creativity.

Abstract:Recently, there has been considerable interest in "sonifying" scientific data; however, sonifying quantum processes using the newest quantum technologies, including Noise Intermediate Scale Quantum devices and quantum random number generators, is still an emerging area of research. Music technologists and composers employ the growing accessibility to diverse data from quantum mechanics as musical tools in the hope of generating new sound expressions. How different is the quantum world from the classical one, and is it possible to express the quantum world using sounds? Quantum phenomena are very different from those that we experience in our everyday lives. Thus, it is challenging to understand them intuitively. In this paper, we propose sonification as a method toward an intuitive understanding of various quantum mechanical phenomena, from Rabi oscillations and resonance fluorescence of a single atom through the generation of Schrödinger cat states in strong laser field physics to insulator-superfluid transition in quantum many-body systems. This paper illustrates various methods we experimented with in sonification and score representations of quantum data depending on the source data and performance settings.

Abstract:A quantum mechanical approach to the psychoacoustic effect of Shepard tones has been explored. Melodic intervals are represented by qubits. The phenomenon of bistable perception of intervals and their acoustic collapse has been considered and described in the language of quantum mechanics. It is shown that the perception of intervals can be understood as a result of measuring the standard basis vector in different bases rotated in a plane of the chroma circle. For comparison, the Stern-Gerlach and photon polarization experiments have been cited to show an analogy. A quantum analog of the Shepard interval source, with a photonic random number generator, has been proposed. The topic of quantum entanglement transferred to the field of sound and psychoacoustics is also discussed. Based on quantum-like calculations, it has been shown how disturbances in time coherence between the playing of different music band members could affect the modification of the melody.

Abstract:We explore ideas for generating sounds and eventually music by using quantum devices in the NISQ era using quantum circuits. In particular, we first consider a concept for a "qeyboard", i.e. a quantum keyboard, where the real-time behaviour of expectation values using a time evolving quantum circuit can be associated to sound features like intensity, frequency and tone. Then, we examine how these properties can be extracted from physical quantum systems, taking the Ising model as an example. This can be realized by measuring physical quantities of the quantum states of the system, e.g. the energies and the magnetization obtained via variational quantum simulation techniques.

Abstract:Quantum computing technology is developing at a fast pace. The impact of quantum computing on the music industry is inevitable. This paper maps the emerging field of Quantum Computer Music. Quantum Computer Music investigates, and develops applications and methods to process music using quantum computing technology. The paper begins by contextualising the field. Then, it discusses significant examples of various approaches developed to date to leverage quantum computing to learn, process and generate music. The methods discussed range from rendering music using data from physical quantum mechanical systems and quantum mechanical simulations to computational quantum algorithms to generate music, including quantum AI. The ambition to develop techniques to encode audio quantumly for making sound synthesisers and audio signal processing systems is also discussed.

Abstract:Mathematics can help analyze the arts and inspire new artwork. Mathematics can also help make transformations from one artistic medium to another, considering exceptions and choices, as well as artists' individual and unique contributions. We propose a method based on diagrammatic thinking and quantum formalism. We exploit decompositions of complex forms into a set of simple shapes, discretization of complex images, and Dirac notation, imagining a world of "prototypes" that can be connected to obtain a fine or coarse-graining approximation of a given visual image. Visual prototypes are exchanged with auditory ones, and the information (position, size) characterizing visual prototypes is connected with the information (onset, duration, loudness, pitch range) characterizing auditory prototypes. The topic is contextualized within a philosophical debate (discreteness and comparison of apparently unrelated objects), it develops through mathematical formalism, and it leads to programming, to spark interdisciplinary thinking and ignite creativity within STEAM.

Quantum Tonality: A Mathemusical Playground

Abstract:We adopt some basic ideas on quantum-theoretical modeling of tonal attraction and develop them further in an alternative direction. Fitting Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) to the Krumhansl-Kessler (KK) probe tone profiles for static attraction opens the possibility to investigate the underlying wave function as the stationary ground state of an anharmonic quantum oscillator with a schematic Hamiltonian involving a perturbation potential. We numerically verify the fulfilment of the associated stationary Schrödinger equation and also inspect its excited states as a solution basis for the corresponding time-dependent Schrödinger equation. With their help we calculate the temporal evolution of any initial state. As an example, we study the dynamics of transpositions of the stationary KK wave function across Regener's line of fifths. This offers potential models for dynamic tonal attraction and also for the behavior of deflected key profiles within the Hamiltonian dynamics of a given tonality.

Abstract:Concepts and formalism from acoustics are often used to exemplify quantum mechanics. Conversely, quantum mechanics could be used to achieve a new perspective on acoustics, as shown by Gabor studies. Here, we focus in particular on the study of human voice, considered as a probe to investigate the world of sounds. We present a theoretical framework that is based on observables of vocal production, and on some measurement apparati that can be used both for analysis and synthesis. In analogy to the description of spin states of a particle, the quantum-mechanical formalism is used to describe the relations between the fundamental states associated with phonetic labels such as phonation, turbulence, and supraglottal myoelastic vibrations. The intermingling of these states, and their temporal evolution, can still be interpreted in the Fourier/Gabor plane, and effective extractors can be implemented. The bases for a Quantum Vocal Theory of Sound, with implications in sound analysis and design, are presented.

Abstract:Quantum computing is a nascent technology, which is advancing rapidly. There is a long history of research into using computers for music. Nowadays computers are absolutely essential for the music economy. Thus, it is very likely that quantum computers will impact the music industry in time to come. This chapter lays the foundations of the new field of 'Quantum Computer Music'. It begins with an introduction to algorithmic computer music and methods to program computers to generate music, such as Markov chains and random walks. Then, it presents quantum computing versions of those methods. The discussions are supported by detailed explanations of quantum computing concepts and walk-through examples. A bespoke generative music algorithm is presented, the Basak-Miranda algorithm, which leverages a property of quantum mechanics known as constructive and destructive interference to operate a musical Markov chain. An Appendix introducing the fundamentals of quantum computing deemed necessary to understand the chapter and a link to access Jupyter Notebooks with examples are also provided.

Abstract:After the development of a self-consistent quantum formalism nearly a century ago there began a quest for how to interpret the theoretical constructs of the formalism. In fact, the pursuit of new interpretations of quantum mechanics persists to this day. Most of these endeavors assume the validity of standard quantum formalism and proceed to ponder the ontic nature of wave functions, operators, and the Schödinger equation. The present essay takes a different approach, more epistemological than ontological. I endeavor to give a heuristic account of how empirical principles lead us to a quantum mechanical description of the world. An outcome of this approach is the suggestion that the notion of discrete quanta leads to the wave nature and statistical behavior of matter rather than the other way around. Finally, the hope is to offer some solace to those older of us who still worry about such things and also to provide the neophyte student of quantum mechanics with physical insight into the mathematically abstract and often baffling aspects of the theory.
