Abstract:Recently, Andrews and Paule studied Schmidt type partitions using MacMahon's Partition Analysis and obtained various interesting results. In this paper, we focus on the combinatorics of Schmidt type partition theorems and characterize them in a general and refined form. In addition, we also present some overpartition analogues of Schmidt type partition theorems.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-degenerate integral ternary quadratic form and let $m_0\in\mathbb{Z}_{\neq 0}$. We study growth of rational points on the affine quadric $(F=m_0)$ and show that they are equidistributed in the adelic space off a finite place. This is closely related to Linnik's problem. Our approach is based on the $\delta$-variant of the Hardy--Littlewood circle method developed by Heath-Brown.

Abstract:In the first part of this work \cite{Du}, a quantitative supplement to the Hasse principle was given for the count of the number of automorphic orbits of primitive zeros of a genus of ternary quadratic forms. This sequel contains, for certain special forms, an independent and elementary proof of this result. When combined with other results of \cite{Du}, this proof also leads to a refinement of an asymptotic result of \cite{Du} and some corollaries for these special forms.

Abstract:We show that the Zagier-Eisenstein series shares its nonholomorphic part with certain weak Maass forms whose holomorphic parts are generating functions for overpartition rank differences. This has a number of consequences, including exact formulas, asymptotics, and congruences for the rank differences as well as q-series identities of the mock theta type.

The classification and representations of positive definite ternary quadratic forms of level 4N

Abstract:Classifications and representations are two main topics in the theory of quadratic forms. In this paper, we consider these topics of ternary quadratic forms. For a given squarefree integer $N$, first we give the classification of positive definite ternary quadratic forms of level $4N$ explicitly. Second, we give explicit formulas of the weighted sum of representations over each class in every genus of ternary quadratic forms of level $4N$, which are involved with modified Hurwitz class number. In the proof of the main results, we use the relations among ternary quadratic forms, quaternion algebras, and Jacobi forms. As a corollary, we get the formula for the class number of positive ternary quadratic forms of level $4N$. As applications, we derive an explicit base of Eisenstein series space of modular forms of weight $3/2$ and level $4N$, and give new proofs of some interesting identities involving representation number of ternary quadratic forms.

Abstract:We work out the exact relationship between algebraic modular forms for a two-by-two general unitary group over a definite quaternion algebra, and those arising from genera of positive-definite quinary lattices, relating stabilisers of local lattices with specific open compact subgroups, paramodular at split places, and with Atkin-Lehner operators. Combining this with the recent work of Rösner and Weissauer, proving conjectures of Ibukiyama on Jacquet-Langlands type correspondences (mildly generalised here), provides an effective tool for computing Hecke eigenvalues for Siegel modular forms of degree two and paramodular level. It also enables us to prove examples of congruences of Hecke eigenvalues connecting Siegel modular forms of degrees two and one. These include some of a type conjectured by Harder at level one, supported by computations of Fretwell at higher levels, and a subtly different congruence discovered experimentally by Buzzard and Golyshev.

Small solutions of generic ternary quadratic congruences to general moduli

Abstract:We study small non-trivial solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $x_1^2+\alpha_2x_2^2+\alpha_3x_3^2\equiv 0 \bmod{q}$, with $q$ being an odd natural number, in an average sense. This extends previous work of the authors in which they considered the case of prime power moduli $q$. Above, $\alpha_2$ is arbitrary but fixed and $\alpha_3$ is variable, and we assume that $(\alpha_2\alpha_3,q)=1$. We show that for all $\alpha_3$ modulo $q$ which are coprime to $q$ except for a small number of $\alpha_3$'s, an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions $(x_1,x_2,x_3)$ to the congruence $x_1^2+\alpha_2x_2^2+\alpha_3x_3^2\equiv 0 \bmod{q}$ with $\max\{|x_1|,|x_2|,|x_3|\}\le N$ and $(x_3,q)=1$ holds if $N\ge q^{11/24+\varepsilon}$ and $q$ is large enough. It is of significance that we break the barrier 1/2 in the above exponent. Key tools in our work are Burgess's estimate for character sums over short intervals and Heath-Brown's estimate for character sums with binary quadratic forms over small regions whose proofs depend on the Riemann hypothesis for curves over finite fields. We also formulate a refined conjecture about the size of the smallest solution of a ternary quadratic congruence, using information about the Diophantine properties of its coefficients.

Precision Asymptotics for Partitions Featuring False-Indefinite Theta Functions

Abstract:Andrews-Dyson-Hickerson, Cohen build a striking relation between q-hypergeometric series, real quadratic fields, and Maass forms. Thanks to the works of Lewis-Zagier and Zwegers we have a complete understanding on the part of these relations pertaining to Maass forms and false-indefinite theta functions. In particular, we can systematically distinguish and study the class of false-indefinite theta functions related to Maass forms. A crucial component here is the framework of mock Maass theta functions built by Zwegers in analogy with his earlier work on indefinite theta functions and their application to Ramanujan's mock theta functions. Given this understanding, a natural question is to what extent one can utilize modular properties to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the associated Fourier coefficients, especially in view of their relevance to combinatorial objects. In this paper, we develop the relevant methods to study such a question and show that quite detailed results can be obtained on the asymptotic development, which also enable Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher type exact formulas under the right conditions. We develop these techniques by concentrating on a concrete example involving partitions with parts separated by parity and derive an asymptotic expansion that includes all the exponentially growing terms.

Abstract:The study of partitions with parts separated by parity was initiated by Andrews in connection with Ramanujan's mock theta functions, and his variations on this theme have produced generating functions with a large variety of different modular properties. In this paper, we use Ingham's Tauberian theorem to compute the asymptotic main term for each of the eight functions studied by Andrews.

Abstract:In this short note, we prove several new congruences for the overcubic partition triples function, using both elementary techniques and the theory of modular forms. These extend the recent list of such congruences given by Nayaka, Dharmendra, and Kumar (2024). We also generalize overcubic partition triples to overcubic partition $k$-tuples and prove a few arithmetic properties for these type of partitions.

Abstract:Let $-D$ be a fundamental discriminant. We express the number of representations of an integer by a positive definite binary quadratic form of discriminant $-D$ with an odd class number $h(-D)$ as a rational linear expression involving the Kronecker symbol $\left(\frac{-D}{.}\right)$ and the Fourier coefficients of certain cusp forms. We prove these cusp forms have eta quotient representations only if $D=23$. This provides, using theta functions, a generalization of a result of F. van der Blij from 1952 for binary quadratic forms of discriminant $-23$ to the case of forms of discriminant $-D$ with odd $h(-D)$. We also study the eta quotient representations of some related theta functions.

Abstract:Recently, Drema and N. Saikia (2023) and M. P. Saikia, Sarma, and Sellers (2023) proved several congruences modulo powers of $2$ for overpartition triples with odd parts. In this paper, we study further divisibility properties of overpartition $k$-tuples with odd parts using elementary means as well as properties of modular forms. In particular, we prove several congruences modulo multiples of $3$, and an infinite family of congruences modulo powers of $3$; we also prove some cases of a conjecture of Saikia, Sarma, and Sellers.

Abstract:G.L. Watson \cite{watson1, watson2} introduced a set of transformations, called Watson transformations by most recent authors, in his study of the arithmetic of integral quadratic forms. These transformations change an integral quadratic form to another integral quadratic form with a smaller discriminants, but preserve many arithmetic properties at the same time. In this paper, we study the change of class numbers of positive definite ternary integral quadratic formula along a sequence of Watson transformations, thus providing a new and effective way to compute the class number of positive definite ternary integral quadratic forms. Explicit class number formulae for many genera of positive definite ternary integral quadratic forms are derived as illustrations of our method.

Abstract:We derive asymptotic formulas with a secondary term for the (smoothly weighted) count of number of integer solutions of height $\leqslant B$ with local conditions to the equation $F(x_1,x_2,x_3)=m$, where $F$ is a non-degenerate indefinite ternary integral quadratic form, and $m$ is a non-zero integer satisfying $-m\Delta_F=\square$ which can grow like $O(B^{2-\theta})$ for some fixed $\theta>0$. Abstract:We determine the border rank of each power of any quadratic form in three variables. Since the problem for rank $1$ and rank $2$ quadratic forms can be reduced to determining the rank of powers of binary forms, we primarily focus on non-degenerate quadratic forms. We begin by considering the quadratic form $q_{n}=x_1^{2}+\dots+x_n^{2}$ in an arbitrary number $n$ of variables. We determine the apolar ideal of any power $q_n^s$, proving that it corresponds to the homogeneous ideal generated by the harmonic polynomials of degree $s+1$. Using this result, we select a specific ideal contained in the apolar ideal for each power of a quadratic form in three variables, which, without loss of generality, we assume to be the form $q_3$. After verifying certain properties, we utilize the recent technique of border apolarity to establish that the border rank of any power $q_3^s$ is equal to the rank of its middle catalecticant matrix, namely $(s+1)(s+2)/2$.

Abstract:A cubic partition is an integer partition wherein the even parts can appear in two colors. In this paper, we introduce the notion of generalized cubic partitions and prove a number of new congruences akin to the classical Ramanujan-type. We emphasize two methods of proofs, one elementary (relying significantly on functional equations) and the other based on modular forms. We close by proving analogous results for generalized overcubic partitions.
