Abstract:Starting with a micropolar formulation, known to account for nonlocal microstructural effects at the continuum level, a generalized Langevin equation (GLE) for a particle, describing the predominant motion of a localized region through a single displacement degree-of-freedom (DOF), is derived. The GLE features a memory dependent multiplicative or internal noise, which appears upon recognising that the micro-rotation variables possess randomness owing to an uncertainty principle. Unlike its classical version, the new GLE qualitatively reproduces the experimentally measured fluctuations in the steady-state mean square displacement of scattering centers in a polyvinyl alcohol slab. The origin of the fluctuations is traced to nonlocal spatial interactions within the continuum. A constraint equation, similar to a fluctuation dissipation theorem (FDT), is shown to statistically relate the internal noise to the other parameters in the GLE.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is that in the classical continuum mechanics model, the influence of the material microstructure on the macroscopic response cannot be accurately described. Especially when the length scale is close to the internal characteristic scale of the material, the system response is significantly affected by the material microstructure. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to introduce non - local effects into the Generalized Langevin Equation (GLE) to more accurately simulate the fluctuation phenomena observed in experiments, especially the fluctuation of the Mean Square Displacement (MSD) of Brownian particles in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) plates induced by temperature. The paper solves this problem by introducing a generalized Langevin equation that includes an internal noise term. This internal noise term reflects the randomness of the micro - rotation variables due to the uncertainty principle, and thus can capture the non - local spatial interactions caused by the material microstructure. This new GLE model can not only reproduce the MSD fluctuations observed in the experiment, but also statistically correlate the internal noise with other GLE parameters by extending Kubo's second Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem (FDT). In summary, the main objective of the paper is to develop a theoretical framework that can accurately describe the influence of the material microstructure on the macroscopic dynamics, especially for those cases where the length scale is comparable to the internal characteristic scale of the material. This not only improves the predictive ability of the model, but also deepens the understanding of the role of non - local effects in fields such as soft matter physics and cell biology.
