Abstract:Quasi-static magnetic-fields up to $800\,$T are generated in the interaction of intense laser pulses ($500\,$J, $1\,$ns, $10^{17}\,$W/cm$^2$) with capacitor-coil targets of different materials. The reproducible magnetic-field peak and rise-time, consistent with the laser pulse duration, were accurately inferred from measurements with GHz-bandwidth inductor pickup coils (B-dot probes). Results from Faraday rotation of polarized optical laser light and deflectometry of energetic proton beams are consistent with the B-dot probe measurements at the early stages of the target charging, up to $t\approx 0.35\,$ns, and then are disturbed by radiation and plasma effects. The field has a dipole-like distribution over a characteristic volume of $1\,$mm$^3$, which is coherent with theoretical expectations. These results demonstrate a very efficient conversion of the laser energy into magnetic fields, thus establishing a robust laser-driven platform for reproducible, well characterized, generation of quasi-static magnetic fields at the kT-level, as well as for magnetization and accurate probing of high-energy-density samples driven by secondary powerful laser or particle beams.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to generate and characterize strong quasi - static magnetic fields using a laser - driven method in a laboratory environment. Specifically, the research objectives include: 1. **Generate strong magnetic fields**: Generate quasi - static magnetic fields up to 800 Tesla (T) through the interaction of lasers with capacitor - coil targets of different materials. This is much higher than the magnetic field strengths generated by traditional methods, which usually can only reach the range of 10 to 300 Tesla. 2. **Characterize the magnetic field**: Conduct a detailed characterization of the generated magnetic field, including the magnetic field peak value, rise time, and spatial distribution. A variety of diagnostic tools, such as high - frequency induction coils (B - dot probes), Faraday rotation measurements, and proton deflection measurements, were used in the study to ensure the accuracy and repeatability of the magnetic field. 3. **Explore application potential**: Explore the application potential of this laser - driven strong - magnetic - field - generation technology in multiple fields, including plasma physics, atomic physics, nuclear physics, and astrophysics, etc. These strong magnetic fields can be used to study the behavior of matter under extreme conditions, improve inertial confinement fusion energy schemes, and develop various applications of magnetically guided particle beams. ### Main contributions - **Efficient energy conversion**: The research demonstrated the efficient conversion of laser energy to magnetic field energy, proving the reliability and effectiveness of the laser - driven platform in generating strong quasi - static magnetic fields. - **Compactness and repeatability**: Compared with traditional large - scale equipment, this method is more compact and has high repeatability, and is suitable for implementation in various high - energy and high - power laser facilities. - **Multi - diagnostic technique verification**: By combining multiple independent diagnostic techniques, the research team confirmed that the generated magnetic field is in the range of hundreds of Tesla, with a controllable rise time and peak value, as well as a clear spatial distribution. ### Conclusion This research not only successfully generated strong quasi - static magnetic fields but also carried out a detailed characterization of them through multiple diagnostic means, proving the great potential of the laser - driven method in generating and controlling strong magnetic fields. This achievement provides an important foundation for future scientific research and technological applications.
