Abstract:Recent years have seen a booming development of electronic structure theory for both molecular and materials sciences in China. Chinese researchers have been playing active roles in many sub-fields of quantum chemistry, condensed-matter physics and computational materials science, including, in particular, relativistic quantum chemistry, fragmentation-based linear scaling methods, density matrix renormalization group theory, doubly hybrid functionals, ab initio valence bond theory, to name a few representative works only. The ``Focus on Electronic Structure Theory in China'' special issue of ``Electronic Structure'' presents a snapshot of current active research in electronic structure theory community in China, both in methodological developments and applications to various interesting and frontier systems, with the contributions by researchers from physics, chemistry, and materials science.

Abstract:Professor Lina Zhang (1940–2020), born in Guangze, Fujian, China, was a distinguished expert in polymer chemistry and physics both domestic and international, served as a prestigious faculty member of Wuhan University, and was elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011. In 2011, she won the Anselm Payne Award from the American Chemical Society, and a year later in 2012, the top award of the National Natural Science Prize of China. She was appointed Associated Editor of ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, as well as Editorial board member of Journal of Applied Polymer Science, Cellulose, and so on. In 2016, the Chemistry World journal of the Royal Society of Chemistry highlighted "Lina Zhang reflects on five decades as part of China's green chemistry vanguard."

Abstract:DOI: 10.1002/adma.201700805 This special issue presents an overview of the best research in materials chemistry at Zhejiang University. In 2017, Zhejiang University reaches a special milestone – 120 years of “Seeking Truth and Pursuing Innovation” (university motto). Qiushi Academy, the predecessor of Zhejiang University, was founded in 1897 and was one of the earliest modern academies (universities) of higher learning established in China. Now Zhejiang University is one of the top five comprehensive research universities in China. In recent years, its impact in the world has been further enhanced according to various scientific databases. The disciplines of materials science and chemistry are the “jewel of the crown” for Zhejiang University. According to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) by Thomson Reuters Corporation, in 2016, research in chemistry and materials at Zhejiang University is ranked No. 17 in the world (No. 1 in China) and No. 27 in the world (No. 3 in China), respectively, based on the ESI 10-Year Accumulative Citation. In 2011, Prof. Xiaogang Peng and several other principle investigators from chemistry and other departments initiated The Center for Chemistry of HighPerformance & Novel Materials at Zhejiang University. The long-term goal is to “understand, discover, and apply advanced materials without bringing negative effects to the nature and the environment”, which may provide part of the solutions to sustainability of human society, the greatest challenge for the world, especially for high-population countries like China. The scientists in this center are diligently working as a cohesive force and with a main focus on optical, optoelectronic, catalytic, and biomedical materials at the current stage. With continuous support from Zhejiang University, this center has become a multidisciplinary platform in the field of materials chemistry. This special issue of Advanced Materials contains 12 reviews, 5 progress reports and 1 communication. The authors are from the Department of Chemistry, the School of Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, the College of Chemical and Biological Engineering, the College of Optical Science and Engineering, and the College of Feihe Huang was born in China in 1973. He received his Ph.D. degree from Virginia Tech in March 2005 under the direction of Prof. Harry W. Gibson. Then he joined Prof. Peter J. Stang’s group at the University of Utah as a postdoctoral fellow. He became a Professor of Chemistry at Zhejiang University in December 2005. His current research interests are supramolecular polymers and pillararene supramolecular chemistry.

A Comparative Study of Domestic and Cross‐country Impact of Chinese and U.S. Publications in Chemistry

Abstract:ABSTRACTBased on publications in Chemistry in 2015, this paper investigated the citation impact on domestic and foreign scholarly communities of Chinese and US publications, and to what extent does such impact relate to international collaboration and government funding. First‐ or corresponding authorship in international collaboration is defined as dominance and is taken into consideration. Citations to publications are designated as domestic citations (Chinese or US citations), partner citations or other citations according to overlap of countries of citing and cited publications. Significant difference exists in the two countries. Most citations of Chinese publications are from domestic and partner countries, with domestic citations being the mainstay. In contrast, US papers receive more other citations than domestic or partner citations, and citations from partner countries contribute significantly. US papers have higher global impact than those of China. High domestic citation propensity is associated with non‐international collaboration, dominance of focal country in international collaboration, and national funding support. Such phenomenon is more pronounced in Chinese papers. In other words, citation impact of Chinese publications is more limited in domestic community, whereas that of the US is more global.

Abstract:Abstract Throughout history, gender inequality has persisted in most parts of the world. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, substantial progress has been made towards gender equality in China. Today, a large number of Chinese women scientists are making significant contributions to advance science. However, are they facing gender discrimination in hiring and promotion? Do they have access to the same opportunities as their male colleagues? What are the potential approaches to further promote gender equality in China's scientific community given myriad unfavorable social factors? Recently, NSR invited five Chinese female scientists and two gender experts to discuss these issues. Here are their observations and suggestions. Abstract:Important advances have been made in the chemistry of rare earth in China since the foundation of the People′s Republic of China.In this article,some representative achievements have been summarized in solid state chemistry,bioinorganic chemistry,extraction chemistry and coordination chemistry of rare earth during 50 years,especially in the last two decades.
