Abstract:Modeling wind speed is one of the key element when dealing with the production of energy through wind turbines. A good model can be used for forecasting, site evaluation, turbines design and many other purposes. In this work we are interested in the analysis of the future financial cash flows generated by selling the electrical energy produced. We apply an indexed semi-Markov model of wind speed that has been shown, in previous investigation, to reproduce accurately the statistical behavior of wind speed. The model is applied to the evaluation of financial indicators like the Internal Rate of Return, semi-Elasticity and relative Convexity that are widely used for the assessment of the profitability of an investment and for the measurement and analysis of interest rate risk. We compare the computation of these indicators for real and synthetic data. Moreover, we propose a new indicator that can be used to compare the degree of utilization of different power plants.
Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to evaluate the economic benefits of wind energy production projects by modeling wind speed. Specifically, the author focuses on: 1. **Wind speed modeling**: An accurate wind speed model is of great significance for prediction, site selection evaluation, wind turbine design, etc. This paper adopts a wind speed model based on the Indexed Semi - Markov Chain (ISMC), which can accurately reproduce the statistical behavior of wind speed. 2. **Economic benefit analysis**: The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the profitability of wind energy production through economic indicators. The author compared the synthetic data generated by the ISMC model with the actual data and calculated financial indicators such as the Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Semi - Elasticity, and Relative Convexity, which are widely used to evaluate the profitability of investments and measure interest rate risks. 3. **Proposal of a new indicator**: The author also proposed a new indicator - Satisfying Power Demand Percentage (SPDP) - to measure the utilization rate of different power plants. This indicator can help evaluate the extent to which wind power generation equipment meets the power demand within a specific time period. 4. **Risk management**: Since the cash flow of wind energy production is affected by future random wind speed sequences and there is interest rate risk, it is necessary to manage this risk through the above - mentioned financial indicators. ### Involved formulas - **Semi - Elasticity**: \[ Se = -\frac{1}{1 + r} \sum_{s = 1}^{n} s\cdot CF_s\cdot(1 + r)^{-s} \Big/ \sum_{s = 1}^{n} CF_s\cdot(1 + r)^{-s}=-\frac{D}{1 + r} \] where \(r\) is the interest rate, \(CF_s\) is the cash flow in period \(s\), and \(D\) is the Duration. - **Relative Convexity**: \[ RC=\frac{1}{Se} \sum_{s = 1}^{n} s\cdot(s + 1)\cdot CF_s\cdot(1 + r)^{-s} \Big/ \sum_{s = 1}^{n} CF_s\cdot(1 + r)^{-s}=\frac{C}{Se} \] where \(C\) is the convexity of the cash flow. ### Summary The paper models the wind speed through the ISMC model, compares the synthetic data generated by this model with the actual data, and calculates multiple financial indicators to evaluate the economic benefits and risks of wind energy projects. In addition, a new indicator SPDP is proposed to measure the utilization rate of wind power generation equipment. These studies are helpful for better understanding and managing the economic risks of wind energy projects.
