Abstract:Abraham forces are defined as electromagnetic forces on neutral objects caused by the presence of slow, time-dependent, homogeneous electromagnetic fields. Only a few experimental observations have been reported, and different formulations exist in literature. The ``standard" Abraham force is usually associated with the full derivative $\partial_t(\mathbf{E} \times \mathbf{B})$ of homogeneous electric and magnetic fields. We show that this full derivative is wrong in general, since the classical Maxwell theory contains subtle induced-dipole forces that contribute to the Abraham force, which thus breaks the dual symmetry between electric and magnetic components. We investigate other manifestations of Abraham forces and torques and estimate orders of magnitude, e.g related to chiral, moving or rotating matter. Some of them are also severely violating dual symmetry. We provide a quantum description of the Abraham force. Apart from being more elegant and less technical, this quantum treatment paves the way for future studies of Abraham forces on complex molecules involving spin and spin-orbit coupling, and also facilitates the inclusion of the quantum vacuum.

Abstract:This article is devoted to obtaining an equation for the Abraham force in a continuous non-conducting medium and methods of its measurement. The equation for the Abraham force is obtained from the Minkowski tensor. The Abraham force appears when the vectors D and E, H and B are non-collinear. From the equation for the Abraham force it follows that it is a vortex force, and its divergence is equal to zero. It shows the existence of the Abraham electric force and the magnetic Abraham's force. Various measurement methods of the Abraham force, which follow from its equation, are given.

Can the Abraham Light Momentum and Energy in a Medium Constitute a Lorentz Four-Vector?

Abstract:By analyzing the Einstein-box thought experiment with the principle of relativity, it is shown that Abraham's light momentum and energy in a medium cannot constitute a Lorentz four-vector, and they consequentially break global momentum and energy conservation laws. In contrast, Minkowski's momentum and energy always constitute a Lorentz four-vector no matter whether in a medium or in vacuum, and the Minkowski's momentum is the unique correct light momentum. A momentum-associated photon mass in a medium is exposed, which explains why only the Abraham's momentum is derived in the traditional "center-of-mass-energy" approach. The EM boundary-condition matching approach, combined with Einstein light-quantum hypothesis, is proposed to analyze this thought experiment, and it is found for the first time that only from Maxwell equations without resort to the relativity, the correctness of light momentum definitions cannot be identified. Optical pulling effect is studied as well.

Abstract:After more than a century of debate, there remains continuing discomfort over what is the correct expression for the electromagnetic momentum in a dielectric medium. This is the so-called the Minkowski-Abraham controversy. We show that there is indeed a consistent picture for the electromagnetic momentum associated with waves in a dielectric, but one must start with the fields E and B, not D and H as fundamental objects. The momentum flow is described by a tensor T^EB, where the expression is identical to that in vacuum. The Minkowski tensor and the Abraham force result from a fractured decomposition of the material momentum. However, for well localized fields, the Minkowski momentum is conserved, consistent with its identification as the canonical momentum. Several cases are discussed to demonstrate that this perspective is consistent and complete. In addition, it is shown that that care must be taken to include momentum transfer to bound charges at dielectric interfaces to correctly describe, for example, oblique reflections, where there is a normal component of the electric field.

Abstract:There has been much progress in recent years in the simulation of Casimir forces between various objects. Current methods have allowed traditional computational electromagnetic solvers to be used to find the Casimir forces in arbitrary three-dimensional objects. The underlying theory to these approaches requires knowledge and manipulation of advanced quantum field theory or quantum statistical physics. We present a means of deriving the Casimir force using the method of moments via the argument principle that presents a simplified derivation and greater freedom in the representation of the moment matrix.

Abstract:Using the Finite Difference Time Domain method, we solve Maxwell's equations numerically and compute the distribution of electromagnetic fields and forces inside material media. The media are generally specified by their dielectric permittivity epsilon(w) and magnetic permeability mu(w), representing small, transparent dielectric and magnetic objects such as platelets and micro-beads. Using two formulations of the electromagnetic force-density, one due to H. A. Lorentz [Collected Papers 2, 164 (1892)], the other due to A. Einstein and J. Laub [Ann, Phys. 331, 541 (1908)], we show that the force-density distribution inside a given object can differ substantially between the two formulations. This is remarkable, considering that the total force experienced by the object is always the same, irrespective of whether the Lorentz or the Einstein-Laub formula is employed. The differences between the two formulations should be accessible to measurement in deformable objects.

A local model for the optical energy and momentum transfer in dielectric media and the microscopic origin of Abraham's force density

Abstract:We report on the continuity equations for linear momentum and energy associated to a recently introduced electromagnetic formulation based on classical dipolar sources [Eur. Phys. J. Plus 138, 1034 (2023)]. When connected to the mass-polariton quasi-particle dynamics, these equations provide a consistent microscopic description of the local optical energy and momentum transfer inside dielectric media, called microscopic mass-polariton formulation. This procedure also unveils the true microscopic origin of the long-known Abraham optical force density as an interplay between induced dipoles and mechanical stresses generated within the material.

Abstract: Recently published paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] contains several misleading statements and misinterpretations of known facts. The main massage of the paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] is as follows: "We have shown that explicit symmetry breaking in the structural configuration of charges leads to symmetry breaking of the electric field which results in electromagnetic radiation due to non-conservative current within a localized region of space and time" seems to transcend mere empiricism, touching the theoretical foundations of electromagnetism. Moreover, basic mistakes are numerous in this article and its main claim is wrong. Below we prove it citing the paper and arguing against it.

Abstract:Force-free electrodynamics is the theoretical paradigm used to describe electromagnetic fields in a region where the inertia of plasma is negligible compared to the strength of the electromagnetic field. While these fields are studied extensively around accreting black holes in an attempt to describe energy extraction, force-free fields also routinely appear in the study of cosmological magnetic fields. Despite this, there are no systematic studies of exact force-free fields in an expanding Universe. In this paper, we use geometric methods to find a wide variety of force-free solutions in a fixed Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric background. The Energy-Momentum Tensor of Electromagnetic Waves in Media and the Solution to the Abraham-Minkowski Dilemma

Abstract:We find that the energy-dynamic tensor of electromagnetic wave in medium defined by Lagrange density is very similar to that of ordinary fluid, and density and pressure can be defined similarly. The pressure here is different from the traditional light pressure. On this basis, we discuss the average momentum, pressure and Bernoulli effect of electromagnetic wave. After considering the contribution of the interaction term, we obtain a new conserved energy-momentum tensor, from which Minkowski momentum and Abraham momentum are derived simultaneously. The difference between them is whether the contribution of pressure is included in momentum. When the pressure significantly affects the experimental results, the experiment will support Minkowski momentum. On the contrary, Abraham momentum is supported. The findings of this paper provide a new solution to the Abraham-Minkowski Dilemma.

Electromagnetic Force and Momentum in Classical Macroscopic Dipolar Media

Abstract:Using realistic classical models of microscopic electric-charge electric dipoles and electric-current (Amperian) magnetic dipoles, it is proven that the Einstein-Laub macroscopic electromagnetic force on a macroscopic-continuum volume of these classical dipoles equals the sum of the microscopic electromagnetic forces on the discrete classical dipoles in that volume. The internal (hidden) momentum of the discrete Amperian magnetic dipoles is rigorously derived and properly included in the determination of the macroscopic force from the spatial averaging of the microscopic forces. Consequently, the Abraham/Einstein-Laub rather than the Minkowski macroscopic electromagnetic-field momentum density gives the total microscopic electromagnetic-field momentum in that volume. The kinetic momentum is found for the volume of the macroscopic continuum from Newton's relativistic equation of motion. It is shown that the difference between the kinetic and canonical momenta in a volume of the macroscopic continuum is equal to the sum of the "hidden electromagnetic momenta" within the electric-current magnetic dipoles and within hypothetical magnetic-current electric dipoles replacing the electric-charge electric dipoles in the classical macroscopic continuum. To obtain the correct unambiguous value of the force on a volume inside the continuum from the force-momentum expression, it is mandatory that the surface of that volume be hypothetically separated from the rest of the continuum by a thin free-space shell. Two definitive experiments performed in the past with time varying fields and forces are shown to conclusively confirm the Einstein-Laub/Abraham formulation over the Minkowski formulation.

Abstract:The problem of the electromagnetic energy-momentum tensor is among the oldest and the most controversial in macroscopic electrodynamics. In the center of the issue is a dispute about the Minkowski and the Abraham tensors for moving media. An overview of the current situation is presented. After putting the discussion into a general Lagrange-Noether framework, the Minkowski tensor is recovered as a canonical energy-momentum. It is shown that the balance equations of energy, momentum, and angular momentum are always satisfied for an open electromagnetic system despite the lack of the symmetry of the canonical tensor. On the other hand, although the Abraham tensor is not defined from first principles, one can formulate a general symmetrization prescription provided a timelike vector is available. We analyze in detail the variational model of a relativistic ideal fluid with isotropic electric and magnetic properties interacting with the electromagnetic field. The relation between the Minkowski energy-momentum tensor, the canonical energy-momentum of the medium and the Abraham tensor is clarified. It is demonstrated that the Abraham energy-momentum is relevant when the 4-velocity of matter is the only covariant variable that enters the constitutive tensor.

On Magnetic Forces and Work

Abstract:We address a long-standing debate over whether classical magnetic forces can do work, ultimately answering the question in the affirmative. In detail, we couple a classical particle with intrinsic spin and elementary dipole moments to the electromagnetic field, derive the appropriate generalization of the Lorentz force law, show that the particle's dipole moments must be collinear with its spin axis, and argue that the magnetic field does mechanical work on the particle's elementary magnetic dipole moment. As consistency checks, we calculate the overall system's energy-momentum and angular momentum, and show that their local conservation equations lead to the same force law and therefore the same conclusions about magnetic forces and work. We also compute the system's Belinfante-Rosenfeld energy-momentum tensor.

Abstract:We present a detailed derivation of the electromagnetic force density and pressure in linear dielectric media according to the so-called Microscopic Ampère formulation, which considers the classical dipolar sources in matter along with the hidden momentum contribution. It is seen that, among the other formulations existing in the literature, our proposal is the only one simultaneously compatible with the experimental works reported to date and with the absence of magnetic monopoles in nature. A new radiation pressure equation for non-magnetic dielectrics under oblique illumination from p-polarized beams is also derived.

Abstract:The force exerted by an electromagnetic body on another body in relative motion, and its minimal expression, the force on moving charges or \emph{Lorentz' force} constitute the link between electromagnetism and mechanics. Expressions for the force were produced first by Maxwell and later by H. A. Lorentz, but their expressions disagree. The construction process was the result, in both cases, of analogies rooted in the idea of the ether. Yet, the expression of the force has remained despite its production context. We present a path to the electromagnetic force that starts from Ludwig Lorenz' relational electromagnetism. The present mathematical abduction does not rest on analogies. Following this path we show that relational electromagnetism, as pursued by the Göttingen school, is consistent with Maxwell's transformation laws and compatible with the idea that the "speed of light" takes the same value in all (inertial) frames of reference, while it cannot be conceived on the basis of analogies with material motion.

Abstract:The classic Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac self-force of pointlike particles is generalized within an effective field theory setup to include linear spin and susceptibility effects described perturbatively, in that setup, by effective couplings in the action. Electromagnetic self-interactions of the pointlike particle are integrated out using the in-in supersymmetric worldline quantum field theory formalism. Abstract:We show that attempts to modify the force on a magnetic dipole by introducing either hidden momentum or internal forces are not correct. The standard textbook result ${\bf F=\nabla(\bmu\cdot B)}$ is correct even in the presence of time dependent electromagnetic fields. Using this expression for the force, overall momentum (the sum of mechanical and electromagnetic momentum) is conserved in changing electromagnetic fields.
