Abstract:We study the Newton polygons of numerators of the zeta functions of $2$-rank $0$ hyperelliptic curves in characteristic $2$. We determine their first generic vertex, and their first vertex in some other non generic cases.

Abstract:In this paper we compute the first vertex of a generic Newton polygon in some special cases, and the corresponding Hasse polynomial. This allows us to show the nonexistence of $p$-cyclic coverings of the projective line in characteristic $p$ with supersingular jacobian for some (infinite families of) genera.

More generally, for every prime $p$ and every $g \geq 4$, I prove that every Newton polygon whose $p$-rank is at least $g-4$ occurs for a smooth curve of genus $g$. In addition, I resolve some cases of Oort's conjecture about Newton polygons.

Abstract:This paper contains a method to prove the existence of smooth curves in positive characteristic whose Jacobians have unusual Newton polygons. Using this method, I give a new proof that there exist supersingular curves of genus in every prime characteristic. More generally, the main result of the paper is that, for every and prime p, every Newton polygon whose p-rank is at least occurs for a smooth curve of genus g in characteristic p. In addition, this method resolves some cases of Oort's conjecture about Newton polygons of curves.

Hyperelliptic and trigonal modular curves in characteristic $p$

Abstract:Let $X_\Delta(N)$ be an intermediate modular curve of level $N$, meaning that there exist (possibly trivial) morphisms $X_1(N)\rightarrow X_\Delta(N) \rightarrow X_0(N)$. For all such intermediate modular curves, we give an explicit description of all primes $p$ such that $X_\Delta(N)_{\overline{\mathbb F}_p}$ is either hyperelliptic or trigonal. Furthermore we also determine all primes $p$ such that $X_\Delta(N)_{\mathbb F_p}$ is trigonal. This is done by first using the Castelnuovo-Severi inequality to establish a bound $N_0$ such that if $X_0(N)_{{\overline{\mathbb F}_p}}$ is hyperelliptic or trigonal, then $N \leq N_0$. To deal with the remaining small values of $N$, we develop a method based on the careful study of the canonical ideal to determine, for a fixed curve $X_\Delta(N)$, all the primes $p$ such that the $X_\Delta(N)_{ {\overline{\mathbb F}_p}}$ is trigonal or hyperelliptic. Furthermore, using similar methods, we show that $X_\Delta(N)_{{\overline{\mathbb F}_p}}$ is not a smooth plane quintic, for any $N$ and any $p$.

Local Euler characteristics of $A_n$-singularities and their application to hyperbolicity

Abstract:Wahl's local Euler characteristic measures the local contributions of a singularity to the usual Euler characteristic of a sheaf. Using tools from toric geometry, we study the local Euler characteristic of sheaves of symmetric differentials for isolated surface singularities of type $A_n$. We prove an explicit formula for the local Euler characteristic of the $m$th symmetric power of the cotangent bundle; this is a quasi-polynomial in $m$ of period $n+1$. We also express the components of the local Euler characteristic as a count of lattice points in a non-convex polyhedron, again showing it is a quasi-polynomial. We apply our computations to obtain new examples of algebraic quasi-hyperbolic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of low degree. We show that an explicit family of surfaces with many singularities constructed by Labs has no genus $0$ curves for the members of degree at least $8$ and no curves of genus $0$ or $1$ for degree at least $10$.

Abstract:We consider the family of hyperelliptic curves over $\Q$ of fixed genus along with a marked rational Weierstrass point and a marked rational non-Weierstrass point. When these curves are ordered by height, we prove that the average Mordell-Weil rank of their Jacobians is bounded above by 5/2. We prove this by showing that the average rank of the 2-Selmer groups is bounded above by 6. We also prove that the average size of the $\phi$-Selmer groups of a family of isogenies associated to this family is exactly 2.
Quadratic Euler Characteristic of Symmetric Powers of Curves

Abstract:We compute the quadratic Euler characteristic of the symmetric powers of a smooth, projective curve over any field $k$ that is not of characteristic two, using the Motivic Gauss-Bonnet Theorem of Levine-Raksit. As an application, we show over a field of characteristic zero that the power structure on the Grothendieck-Witt ring introduced by Pajwani-Pál computes the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic of symmetric powers for all curves.

Abstract:We explain how we computed equations for all genus 4 curves defined of the field with 2 elements, up-to-isomorphism, and some of the data we obtained. We give descriptions also of nice models for genus 4 curves over characteristic 2 fields, in both the hyperelliptic case and the trigonal case.

Abstract:The object of this paper is to study GL(2,R) orbit closures in hyperelliptic components of strata of abelian differentials. The main result is that all higher rank affine invariant submanifolds in hyperelliptic components are branched covering constructions, i.e. every translation surface in the affine invariant submanifold covers a translation surface in a lower genus hyperelliptic component of a stratum of abelian differentials. This result implies finiteness of algebraically primitive Teichmuller curves in all hyperelliptic components for genus greater than two. A classification of all GL(2, R) orbit closures in hyperelliptic components of strata (up to computing connected components and up to finitely many nonarithmetic rank one orbit closures) is provided. Our main theorem resolves a pair of conjectures of Mirzakhani in the case of hyperelliptic components of moduli space.

Abstract:For two supersingular elliptic curves $E$ and $E'$ defined over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$, let $[E \times E']$ be the superspecial abelian surface with the principal polarization $\{0\} \times E' + E \times \{0\}$. We determine local structure of the vertices $[E \times E']$ in the $(\ell, \ell)$-isogeny graph of principally polarized superspecial abelian surfaces where either $E$ or $E'$ is defined over $\mathbb{F}_p$. We also present a simple new proof of the main theorem in \cite{LOX20}.

A hyperelliptic saga on a generating function of the squares of Legendre polynomials

Abstract:We decompose the generating function $\sum_{n=0}^\infty\binom{2n}nP_n(y)^2z^n$ of the squares of Legendre polynomials as a product of periods of hyperelliptic curves. These periods satisfy a family of $\textit{second}$ order differential equations. This is highly unusual since $\textit{four}$ is the expected order for genus 2. These second order equations are arithmetic and yet, surprisingly, their monodromy group is dense in $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$. This suggests that they cannot be solved in terms of hypergeometric functions, which is novel for arithmetic second order differential equations that are $\textit{defined over}$ $\mathbb{Q}$, and also novel for a $\textit{family}$ of such equations. We complement our analysis with a recipe for constructing similar examples. Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we investigate the theory of heights in a family of stacky curves following recent work of Ellenberg, Satriano, and Zureick-Brown. We first give an elementary construction of a height which is seen to be dual to theirs. We count rational points having bounded ESZ-B height on a particular stacky curve, answering a question of Ellenberg, Satriano, and Zureick-Brown. We also show that when the Euler characteristic of stacky curves is non-positive, the ESZ-B height coming from the anti-canonical divisor class fails to have the Northcott property. We prove that a stacky version of a conjecture of Vojta is equivalent to the $abc$ -conjecture.

Abstract:Using Fourier-Mukai transformations, we prove some results about the ring of unipotent vector bundles on elliptic curves in positive characteristics. This ring was determined by Atiyah in characteristic zero, who showed that it is a polynomial ring in one variable. It turns out that the situation in characteristic p>0 is completely different and rather bizarre: the ring is nonnoetherian and contains a subring whose spectrum contains infinitely many copies of Spec(Z), which are glued with successively higher and higher infinitesimal identification at the point corresponding to the prime p.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a projective irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold. We associate with any big $\mathbf{R}$-divisor $D$ on $X$ a convex polygon $\Delta_E^{\mathrm{num}}(D)$ of dimension $2$, whose Euclidean volume is $\mathrm{vol}_{\mathbf{R}^2}(\Delta_E^{\mathrm{num}}(D))=q_X(P(D))/2$, where $E$ is any prime divisor on $X$, $q_X$ is the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki form and $P(D)$ is the positive part of the divisorial Zariski decomposition of $D$. We systematically study these polygons and observe that they behave like the Newton-Okounkov bodies of big divisors on smooth complex projective surfaces, with respect to a general admissible flag.

Abstract:In this article we prove that the complement of a very generic curve of degree at least equal to 14 in the complex projective plane is hyperbolic in the sense of Kobayashi. Thus, using a new method, we improve the former known bound obtained by El Goul. We also improve the case of a very generic curve with two components.

Abstract:Let $q\geq2$ be a prime power and consider Drinfeld modules of rank 2 over $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We prove that there are no points with coordinates being Drinfeld singular moduli, on a family of hyperbolas $XY=\gamma$, where $\gamma$ is a polynomial of small degree. This is an effective André-Oort theorem for these curves. We also prove that there are at most finitely many Drinfeld singular moduli that are algebraic units, for every fixed $q\geq2$, and we give an effective bound on the discriminant of such singular moduli. We give in an appendix an inseparability criterion for values of some classical modular forms, generalising an argument used in the proof of our first result.

Zeta-functions of Curves over Finite Fields

Abstract:Curves over finite fields are of great importance in cryptography and coding theory. Through studying their zeta-functions, we would be able to find out vital arithmetic and geometric information about them and their Jacobians, including the number of rational points on this kind of curves. In this paper, I investigate if it is possible to construct a curve over finite fields of a given genus $g$ whose zeta-function is given as a product of zeta-functions of $g$ elliptic curves, and find out alternative methods if it is not possible. Basically, I look for conditions which those $g$ elliptic curves should satisfy such that their product (of their Jacobians) is isogenous to the Jacobian of a curve of a given genus $g$. Then from this isogenous relationship I can determine the characteristic polynomial of the Frobenius endomorphism of the Jacobian of the new curve and by this characteristic polynomial I can thus determine the zeta-function of this new curve. By using the zeta-functions of curves in the form as generating functions, the number of rational points on curves can even be found out, which may lead to further researches relating to some applications in cryptography, coding theory and even information theory.

The Average Size of 2-Selmer Groups of Elliptic Curves in Characteristic 2

Abstract:Let $K$ be the function field of a smooth curve $B$ over a finite field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic. We prove that the average size of the $2$-Selmer groups of elliptic curves $E/K$ is at most $1+2\zeta_B(2)\zeta_B(10)$, where $\zeta_B$ is the zeta function of the curve $B$. In particular, in the limit as $q=\#k\to\infty$ (with the genus $g(B)$ fixed), we see that the average size of 2-Selmer is bounded above by $3$, even in "bad" characteristics. This completes the proof that the average rank of elliptic curves, over $\textit{any}$ fixed global field, is finite. Handling the case of characteristic $2$ requires us to develop a new theory of integral models of 2-Selmer elements, dubbed "hyper-Weierstrass curves."

Abstract:This paper introduces explicit Galois cohomological methods for determining the ranks of Bloch--Kato Selmer groups associated to the Tate twists of the 2-adic second étale cohomology of the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve with a rational Weierstrass point. In particular, this can give a method to determine the rational points on such curves via the Chabauty--Coleman--Kim method. This is applied to answer a question of Bugeaud, Mignotte, Siksek, Stoll and Tengely.

Abstract:We give upper bounds for the number of rational points of bounded anti-canonical height on del Pezzo surfaces of degree at most five over any global field whose characteristic is not equal to two or three. For number fields these results are conditional on a conjecture relating the rank of an elliptic curve to its conductor, while they are unconditional in positive characteristic. For quartic or quintic del Pezzo surfaces with a conic bundle structure, we establish even stronger estimates unconditionally as long as the characteristic is not two.
