Abstract:Recent developments in Banach space theory provided unexpected examples of unital Banach algebras that are isomorphic to Calkin algebras of Banach spaces, however no example of a unital Banach algebra that cannot be realised as a~Calkin algebra has been found so far. This naturally led to the question of possible limitations of such assignments. In the present note we provide examples of unital Banach algebras meeting the necessary density condition for being the Calkin algebra of a separable Banach space that are not isomorphic to Calkin algebras of such spaces, nonetheless. The examples may be found of the form $C(X)$ for a compact space $X$, $\ell_1(G)$ for some torsion-free Abelian group, and a~simple, unital AF $C^*$-algebra. Extensions to higher densities are also presented.

On Subspaces of Indecomposable Banach Spaces

Abstract:We address the following question: what is the class of Banach spaces isomorphic to subspaces of indecomposable Banach spaces? We show that this class includes all Banach spaces of density not bigger than the continuum which do not admit $\ell_\infty$ as a quotient (equivalently do not admit a subspace isomorphic to $\ell_1(\mathfrak{c})$). This includes all Asplund spaces and all weakly Lindelöf determined Banach spaces of density not bigger than the continuum. However, we also show that this class includes some Banach spaces admitting $\ell_\infty$ as a quotient. Our method of constructing indecomposable Banach spaces above a given Banach space is a considerable modification of the method of constructing Banach spaces of continuous functions with few$^*$ operators developed before by the first-named author.

Abstract:We show that finite dimensional Banach spaces fail to be uniformly non locally almost square. Moreover, we construct an equivalent almost square bidual norm on $\ell_\infty.$ As a consequence we get that every dual Banach space containing $c_0$ has an equivalent almost square dual norm. Finally we characterize separable real almost square spaces in terms of their position in their fourth duals.

Abstract:We will introduce the countable separation property (CSP) of Banach spaces X, which is defined as follows: For each subset \mathcal{F} of X^{\ast}, which separates X, there exists a countable separating subset \mathcal{F}_{0} of \mathcal{F}. All separable Banach spaces have CSP and plenty of examples of non-separable CSP spaces are provided. Connections of CSP with Markucevic-bases, Corson property and related geometric issues are discussed.
A note on nonseparable Lipschitz-free spaces

Abstract:We prove that several classical Banach space properties are equivalent to separability for the class of Lipschitz-free spaces, including Corson's property ($\mathcal{C}$), Talponen's Countable Separation Property, or being a Gâteaux differentiability space. On the other hand, we single out more general properties where this equivalence fails. In particular, the question whether the duals of non-separable Lipschitz-free spaces have a weak$^*$ sequentially compact ball is undecidable in ZFC. Finally, we provide an example of a nonseparable dual Lipschitz-free space that fails the Radon-Nikodým property.

Abstract:We consider linear bounded operators acting in Banach spaces with a basis, such operators can be represented by an infinite matrix. We prove that for an invertible operator there exists a sequence of invertible finite-dimensional operators so that the family of norms of their inverses is uniformly bounded. It leads to the fact that solutions of finite-dimensional equations converge to the solution of initial operator equation with infinite-dimensional matrix.

Spaceability of sets of non-injective maps

Abstract:Generalizing a recent result on lineability of sets of non-injective linear operators, we prove, for quite general linear spaces $A$ of maps from an arbitraty set to a sequence space, that, for every $0 \neq f \in A$, the subset of $A$ of non-injective maps contains an infinite dimensional subspace of $A$ containing $f$. We provide aplications of the main result to spaces of linear operators between quasi-Banach spaces, to spaces of linear operators belonging to an operator ideal, and, in the nonlinear setting, to linear spaces of homogeneous polynomials and to linear spaces of vector-valued Lispshitz functions on metric spaces.

Abstract:In this article, we address a problem posed by Bayart regarding the existence of an infinite‐dimensional closed vector subspace (excluding the null operator) within the set of supercyclic operators on Banach spaces. We fully resolve this problem by establishing the existence of the closed subspace. Furthermore, we prove that the set of supercyclic operators on l1 contains, up to the null operator, an isometric copy of l1 .

Non Hilbertian (Lorentzian) Length Spaces

Abstract:In this note, the idea of finite dimensional $L^p$ spaces is transferred to Lorentzian length spaces to provide an example that is locally nowhere Minkowskian. Looking at the sectional curvature bounds of this example leads to the more general statement that normed spaces in which the norm does not come from an inner product, have no sectional curvature bounds. This statement holds in the Riemannian and Lorentzian cases. In addition, the Lorentzian $L^p$ space can be used as an example in the context of Lorentzian Gromov-Hausdorff convergence, to show that unbounded sectional curvature or geodesic regularity is in general not preserved in the GH limit, and as an example of a sequence of uniform bounded length spaces which are not GH pre-compact.

Abstract:Given any regular T 0 (equivalently, regular T 1 ) space X , the question of whether X being Lindelöf implies X being a D -space is an active open problem. This article gives a class of handy examples of a second countable collectionwise normal collectionwise Hausdorff T 0 space of uncountable cardinal, with at most countably many singletons being not closed, that is not a D -space. Also given is a class of handy examples of a second countable hyperconnected T 0 space of uncountable cardinal, with at most countably many singletons being not closed, that is not a D -space.

Abstract:If X is a convex-transitive Banach space and 1\leq p\leq \infty then the closed linear span of the simple functions in the Bochner space L^{p}([0,1],X) is convex-transitive. If H is an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and C_{0}(L) is convex-transitive, then C_{0}(L,H) is convex-transitive. Some new fairly concrete examples of convex-transitive spaces are provided.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of isometric envelope of a subspace in a Banach space, establishing its connections with several key elements: (a) we explore its relation to the mean ergodic projection on fixed points within a semigroup of contractions, (b) we draw parallels with Korovkin sets from the 1970s, (c) we investigate its impact on the extension properties of linear isometric embeddings. We use this concept to address the recent conjecture that the Gurarij space and the spaces , are the only separable approximately ultrahomogeneous Banach spaces (a certain multidimensional transitivity of the action of the linear isometry group). The similar conjecture for Fraïssé Banach spaces (a strengthening of the approximately homogeneous property) is also considered. We characterize the Hilbert space as the only separable reflexive space in which any closed subspace coincides with its envelope; and we show that the Gurarij space satisfies the same property. We compute some envelopes in the case of Lebesgue spaces, showing that the reflexive -spaces are the only reflexive rearrangement invariant spaces on [0, 1] for which all 1-complemented subspaces are envelopes. We also identify the isometrically unique "full" quotient space of by a Hilbertian subspace, for appropriate values of p , as well as the associated topological group embedding of the unitary group into the isometry group of .

Infinite Dimensional Multiplicity Free Spaces I: Limits of Compact Commutative Spaces

Abstract:We study direct limits $(G,K) = \varinjlim (G_n,K_n)$ of compact Gelfand pairs. First, we develop a criterion for a direct limit representation to be a multiplicity--free discrete direct sum of irreducible representations. Then we look at direct limits $G/K = \varinjlim G_n/K_n$ of compact riemannian symmetric spaces, where we combine our criterion with the Cartan--Helgason Theorem to show in general that the regular representation of $G = \varinjlim G_n$ on a certain function space $\varinjlim L^2(G_n/K_n)$ is multiplicity free. That method is not applicable for direct limits of nonsymmetric Gelfand pairs, so we introduce two other methods. The first, based on ``parabolic direct limits'' and ``defining representations'', extends the method used in the symmetric space case. The second uses some (new) branching rules from finite dimensional representation theory. In both cases we define function spaces $\cA(G/K)$, $\cC(G/K)$ and $L^2(G/K)$ to which our multiplicity--free criterion applies.

Abstract:It is proved that for every compact metric space $K$ there exists a Banach space $X$ whose Calkin algebra $\mathcal{L}(X)/\mathcal{K}(X)$ is homomorphically isometric to $C(K)$. This is achieved by appropriately modifying the Bourgain-Delbaen $\mathscr{L}_\infty$-space of Argyros and Haydon in such a manner that sufficiently many diagonal operators on this space are bounded.

Abstract:In this note we find λ > 1 \lambda >1 and give an explicit construction of a separable Banach space X X such that there is no λ \lambda -Lipschitz retraction from X X onto any compact convex subset of X X whose closed linear span is X X . This is closely related to a well-known open problem raised by Godefroy and Ozawa in 2014 and represents the first known example of a Banach space with such a property.

Abstract:A natural class of ideals, almost isometric ideals, of Banach spaces is defined and studied. The motivation for working with this class of subspaces is our observation that they inherit diameter 2 properties and the Daugavet property. Lindenstrauss spaces are known to be the class of Banach spaces that are ideals in every superspace; we show that being an almost isometric ideal in every superspace characterizes the class of Gurariy spaces.

Abstract:Let $\cal M$ be a semi-finite von Neumann algebra equipped with a distinguished faithful, normal, semi-finite trace $\tau$. We introduce the notion of equi-integrability in non-commutative spaces and show that if a rearrangement invariant quasi-Banach function space $E$ on the positive semi-axis is $\alpha$-convex with constant 1 and satisfies a non-trivial lower $q$-estimate with constant 1, then the corresponding non-commutative space of measurable operators $E({\cal M}, \tau)$ has the following property: every bounded sequence in $E({\cal M}, \tau)$ has a subsequence that splits into a $E$-equi-integrable sequence and a sequence with pairwise disjoint projection supports. This result extends the well known Kadec-Pe\l czy\'nski subsequence decomposition for Banach lattices to non-commutative spaces. As applications, we prove that for $1\leq p <\infty$, every subspace of $L^p(\cal M, \tau)$ either contains almost isometric copies of $\ell^p$ or is strongly embedded in $L^p(\cal M, \tau)$.
