Abstract:We are concerned with a class of two-dimensional nonlinear wave equations $\p_t^2u-\div(c^2(u)\na u)=0$ or $\p_t^2u-c(u)\div(c(u)\na u)=0$ with small initial data $(u(0,x),\p_tu(0,x))=(\ve u_0(x), \ve u_1(x))$, where $c(u)$ is a smooth function, $c(0)\not =0$, $x\in\Bbb R^2$, $u_0(x), u_1(x)\in C_0^{\infty}(\Bbb R^2)$ depend only on $r=\sqrt{x_1^2+x_2^2}$, and $\ve>0$ is sufficiently small. Such equations arise in a pressure-gradient model of fluid dynamics, also in a liquid crystal model or other variational wave equations. When $c'(0)\not= 0$ or $c'(0)=0$, $c"(0)\not= 0$, we establish blowup and determine the lifespan of smooth solutions.

Abstract:We consider the blowup problem for ut— Apu+\u p~2u (x^ O , t> 0) under the Dirichlet boundary condition and p> 2. We derive sufficient conditions on blowing up of solutions. In particular, it is shown that every non-negative and non-zero solution blows up in a finite time if the domain O is large enough. Moreover, we show that every blowup solution behaves asymptotically like a self-similar solution near the blowup time. The Rayleigh type quotient introduced in Lemma A plays an important role throughout this paper.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the lifespan and the blowup mechanism for smooth solutions to the 2-D nonlinear wave equation $\p_t^2u-\ds\sum_{i=1}^2\p_i(c_i^2(u)\p_iu)$ $=0$, where $c_i(u)\in C^{\infty}(\Bbb R^n)$, $c_i(0)\neq 0$, and $(c_1'(0))^2+(c_2'(0))^2\neq 0$. This equation has an interesting physics background as it arises from the pressure-gradient model in compressible fluid dynamics and also in nonlinear variational wave equations. Under the initial condition $(u(0,x), \p_tu(0,x))=(\ve u_0(x), \ve u_1(x))$ with $u_0(x), u_1(x)\in C_0^{\infty}(\Bbb R^2)$, and $\ve>0$ is small, we will show that the classical solution $u(t,x)$ stops to be smooth at some finite time $T_{\ve}$. Moreover, blowup occurs due to the formation of a singularity of the first-order derivatives $\na_{t,x}u(t,x)$, while $u(t,x)$ itself is continuous up to the blowup time $T_{\ve}$.

Abstract:For 2-D quasilinear wave equations with cubic nonlinearity and small initial data, we not only show that the solutions blow up in finite time but also give a complete asymptotic expansion of the lifespan of classical solutions. Hence we solve a problem posed by S. Alinhac and A. Hoshiga. Moreover, as an application of this result, we prove the blowup of solutions for the nonlinear vibrating membrane equations.

Abstract:For 2D compressible isentropic Euler equations of polytropic gases, S. Alinhac establishes that the axisymmetric smooth solution blows up. In the present paper, for 2D compressible isentropic Euler equations of Chaplygin gases, we show that the small perturbed smooth solution exists globally when the rotationally invariant initial data are a perturbation of size ε>0 of a rest state. Near the light cone, 2D Euler equations of Chaplygin gases can be transformed into a second order quasilinear wave equation, which satisfies both the null conditions. This will lead to that the corresponding second order quasilinear wave equation admits a global smooth solution near the light cone. However, away from the light cone, the hydrodynamical waves have no decay in time and strongly affect the related acoustical waves. By introducing a nonlinear ODE, we can distinguish the fast decay part and non-decay part so that the global energy estimates are derived.

Abstract:For the 2-D quasilinear wave equation $\displaystyle \sum_{i,j=0}^2g_{ij}(\nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$ with coefficients independent of the solution $u$, a blowup result for small data solutions has been established in [1,2] provided that the null condition does not hold and a generic nondegeneracy condition on the initial data is fulfilled. In this paper, we are concerned with the more general 2-D quasilinear wave equation $\displaystyle \sum_{i,j=0}^2g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$ with coefficients that depend simultaneously on $u$ and $\nabla u$. When the null condition does not hold and a suitable nondegeneracy condition on the initial data is satisfied, we show that smooth small data solutions blow up in finite time. Furthermore, we derive an explicit expression for the lifespan and establish the blowup mechanism.

In different regions divided by p, q, and m, we obtain the sufficient conditions for finite-time blow-up of the solutions, and get the upper and lower bounds of the blow-up time.

Abstract: For the first order 1D $n\times n$ quasilinear strictly hyperbolic system $\partial_tu+F(u)\partial_xu=0$ with $u(x, 0)=\varepsilon u_0(x)$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is small, $u_0(x)\not\equiv 0$ and $u_0(x)\in C_0^2(\mathbb R)$, when at least one eigenvalue of $F(u)$ is genuinely nonlinear, it is well-known that on the finite blowup time $T_{\varepsilon}$, the derivatives $\partial_{t,x}u$ blow up while the solution $u$ keeps to be small. For the 1D scalar equation or $2\times 2$ strictly hyperbolic system (corresponding to $n=1, 2$), if the smooth solution $u$ blows up in finite time, then the blowup mechanism can be well understood (i.e., only the blowup of $\partial_{t,x}u$ happens). In the present paper, for the $n\times n$ ($n\geq 3$) strictly hyperbolic system with a class of large initial data, we are concerned with the blowup mechanism of smooth solution $u$ on the finite blowup time and the detailed singularity behaviours of $\partial_{t,x}u$ near the blowup point. Our results are based on the efficient decomposition of $u$ along the different characteristic directions, the suitable introduction of the modulated coordinates and the global weighted energy estimates.

Abstract:For a singular Liouville equation, it is plausible that a non-simple blowup phenomenon occurs around a quantized singular pole. The presence of complex blowup profiles of bubbling solutions presents substantial challenges in applications. In this article, we demonstrate that under natural assumptions, non-simple blowup takes place only when the derivatives of certain coefficient functions approach zero. Our main result encompasses all previous findings and determines the vanishing order for any specific quantized singular source. Our theorems can be utilized not only to eliminate multiple non-simple blowup scenarios in applications but also to investigate blowup solutions with moving poles.

Abstract:For small-amplitude semilinear wave equations with power type nonlinearity on the first-order spatial derivative, the expected sharp upper bound on the lifespan of solutions is obtained for both critical cases and subcritical cases, for all spatial dimensions . It is achieved uniformly by constructing the integral equations, deriving the ordinary differential inequality system, and iteration argument. Combined with the former works, the sharp lifespan estimates for this problem are completely established, at least for the spherical symmetric case.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the long time existence of the classical solution to 2D one-fluid Euler-Poisson system of electrons with non-zero vorticity in the standard Sobolev spaces so that both the local solution and long time solution lie in the same Sobolev space framework without any extra restrictions of space-decay rates at infinity. It is shown that the lifespan of the classical solution is at least T- epsilon,T-delta = min { e( epsilon - 2) |ln epsilon| (- alpha ), (kappa)/(delta )} , where epsilon > 0 is the size of the initial perturbed density and velocity, delta > 0 is the size of the initial vorticity, alpha > 0 is any fixed number, kappa > 0 is a suitable constant. We decompose the Euler-Poisson system into three bilinear interaction parts: dispersion-dispersion, vorticity-dispersion, and vorticity-vorticity. Based on the Strichartz inequality, the related quartic energy estimates, the conservation of specific vorticity along the streamline and some delicate analysis, the precise bound of lifespan T epsilon,delta is obtained. By the way, for the 2D irrotational one-fluid Euler-Poisson system with small amplitude epsilon of the perturbed initial data in the Sobolev spaces, we obtain an interesting long time existence result with lifespan T-epsilon >= e( epsilon - 2) |ln epsilon|( - alpha) ( alpha > 0 is any fixed constant).

Abstract:We study the phenomenon of finite time blow-up in solutions of the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for the parabolic equation ut=div(a(x,t)|∇u|p(x)−2∇u)+b(x,t)|u|σ(x,t)−2u with variable exponents of nonlinearity p(x),σ(x,t)∈(1,∞). Two different cases are studied. In the case of semilinear equation with p(x)≡2, a(x,t)≡1, b(x,t)≥b−>0 we show that the finite time blow-up happens if the initial function is sufficiently large and either minΩσ(x,t)=σ−(t)>2 for all t>0, or σ−(t)≥2, σ−(t)↘2 as t→∞ and ∫1∞es(2−σ−(s))ds<∞. In the case of the evolution p(x)-Laplace equation with the exponents p(x), σ(x) independent of t, we prove that every solution corresponding to a sufficiently large initial function exhibits a finite time blow-up if b(x,t)≥b−>0, at(x,t)≤0, bt(x,t)≥0, minσ(x)>2 and maxp(x)≤minσ(x).
