Abstract:An isoparametric family in the unit sphere consists of parallel isoparametric hypersurfaces and their two focal submanifolds. The present paper has two parts. The first part investigates topology of the isoparametric families, namely the homotopy, homeomorphism, or diffeomorphism types, parallelizability, as well as the Lusternik–Schnirelmann category. This part extends substantially the results of Wang (J Differ Geom 27:55–66, 1988). The second part is concerned with their curvatures; more precisely, we determine when they have non-negative sectional curvatures or positive Ricci curvatures with the induced metric.
On isoparametric foliations of complex and quaternionic projective spaces

Abstract:We conclude the classification of isoparametric (or equivalently, polar) foliations of complex and quaternionic projective spaces. This is done by investigating the projections of certain inhomogeneous isoparametric foliations of the 31-sphere under the respective Hopf fibrations, thereby solving the last remaining open cases.

Abstract:It is well known that, by the Reeb stability theorem, the leaf space of a Riemannian foliation with compact leaves is an orbifold. We prove that, under mild completeness conditions, the leaf space of a Killing Riemannian foliation is a diffeological quasifold: as a diffeological space, it is locally modelled by quotients of Cartesian space by countable groups acting affinely. Furthermore, we prove that the holonomy groupoid of the foliation is, locally, Morita equivalent to the action groupoid of a countable group acting affinely on Cartesian space.

Polar Foliations on Symmetric Spaces and Mean Curvature Flow

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we study polar foliations on simply connected symmetric spaces with non-negative curvature. We will prove that all such foliations are isoparametric as defined in [E. Heintze, X. Liu and C. Olmos, Isoparametric submanifolds and a Chevalley-type restriction theorem, Integrable systems, geometry, and topology, American Mathematical Society, Providence 2006, 151–190]. We will also prove a splitting theorem which, when leaves are compact, reduces the study of such foliations to polar foliations in compact simply connected symmetric spaces. Moreover, we will show that solutions to mean curvature flow of regular leaves in such foliations are always ancient solutions. This generalizes part of the results in [X. Liu and C.-L. Terng, Ancient solutions to mean curvature flow for isoparametric submanifolds, Math. Ann. 378 2020, 1–2, 289–315] for mean curvature flows of isoparametric submanifolds in spheres.

Veering triangulations and transverse foliations

Abstract:We present a combinatorial approach to the existence of foliations and contact structures transverse to a given pseudo-Anosov flow. Let $\varphi$ be a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow on a closed oriented 3-manifold. Our main technical result is that every codimension 1 foliation transverse to $\varphi$ is carried by a single branched surface coming from a veering triangulation. Combined with recent breakthrough work of Massoni, this reduces the existence problem for transverse foliations to something like the feasibility of a system of inequalities (rather than equations!) over $Homeo_+([0,1])$. As a proof of concept, we show that for the hyperbolic, fibered, non-L-space knot $10_{145}$, the natural pseudo-Anosov flow on the slope $s$ Dehn surgery admits a transverse foliation for $s\in (-\infty, 3)$, but does not admit such a foliation for $s\in [5,\infty)$. The negative result is part of a more general Milnor--Wood type phenomenon which puts limitations on some well known methods for constructing taut foliations on Dehn surgeries.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the differential topological properties of a large class of singular spaces: subcarteisan space. First, a minor further result on the partition of unity for differential spaces is derived. Second, the tubular neighborhood theorem for subcartesian spaces with constant structural dimensions is established. Third, the concept of Morse functions on smooth manifolds is generalized to differential spaces. For subcartesian space with constant structural dimension, a class of examples of Morse functions is provided. With the assumption that the subcartesian space can be embedded as a bounded subset of an Euclidean space, it is proved that any smooth bounded function on this space can be approximated by Morse functions. The infinitesimal stability of Morse functions on subcartesian spaces is studied. Classical results on Morse functions on smooth manifolds can be treated directly as corollaries of our results here.

Abstract:We define a new version of the exterior derivative on the basic forms of a Riemannian foliation to obtain a new form of basic cohomology that satisfies Poincaré duality in the transversally orientable case. We use this twisted basic cohomology to show relationships between curvature, tautness, and vanishing of the basic Euler characteristic and basic signature.

Abstract:This is a survey on the recent progress in several applications of isoparametric theory, including an affirmative answer to Yau's conjecture on the first eigenvalue of Laplacian in the isoparametric case, a negative answer to Yau's 76th problem in his Problem Section, new examples of Willmore submanifolds in spheres, a series of examples to Besse's problem on the generalization of Einstein condition, isoparametric functions on exotic spheres, counterexamples to two conjectures of Leung, as well as surgery theory on isoparametric foliation.
New cohomological invariants of foliations

Abstract:Given a smooth foliation on a closed manifold, basic forms are differential forms that can be expressed locally in terms of the transverse variables. The space of basic forms yields a differential complex, because the exterior derivative fixes this set. The basic cohomology is the cohomology of this complex, and this has been studied extensively. Given a Riemannian metric, the adjoint of the exterior derivative maps the orthogonal complement of the basic forms to itself, and we call the resulting cohomology the "antibasic cohomology". Although these groups are defined using the metric, the dimensions of the antibasic cohomology groups are invariant under diffeomorphism and metric changes. If the underlying foliation is Riemannian, the groups are foliated homotopy invariants that are independent of basic cohomology and ordinary cohomology of the manifold. For this class of foliations we use the codifferential on antibasic forms to obtain the corresponding Laplace operator, develop its analytic properties, and prove a Hodge theorem. We then find some topological and geometric properties that impose restrictions on the antibasic Betti numbers.

Abstract:In this paper, two sequences of minimal isoparametric hypersurfaces are constructed via representations of Clifford algebras. Based on these, we give estimates on eigenvalues of the Laplacian of the focal submanifolds of isoparametric hypersurfaces in unit spheres. This improves results of [TY13] and [TXY14]. Eells and Lemaire [EL83] posed a problem to characterize the compact Riemannian manifold M for which there is an eigenmap from M to S^n. As another application of our constructions, the focal maps give rise to many examples of eigenmaps from minimal isoparametric hypersurfaces to unit spheres. Most importantly, by investigating the second fundamental forms of focal submanifolds of isoparametric hypersurfaces in unit spheres, we provide infinitely many counterexamples to two conjectures of Leung [Le91] (posed in 1991) on minimal submanifolds in unit spheres. Notice that these conjectures of Leung have been proved in the case that the normal connection is flat [HV01].

Abstract:The first part of the paper is to improve the fundamental theory ofisoparametric functions on general Riemannian manifolds. Next we focus ourattention on exotic spheres, especially on "exotic" 4-spheres (if exist) andthe Gromoll-Meyer sphere. In particular, as one of main results we prove: thereexists no properly transnormal function on any exotic 4-sphere if it exists.Furthermore, by projecting an S^3-invariant isoparametric function onSp(2), we construct a properly transnormal but not an isoparametric functionon the Gromoll-Meyer sphere with two points as the focal varieties.
On the topological invariance of the algebraic multiplicity of holomorphic foliations

Abstract:In this paper, we address one of the most basic and fundamental problems in the theory of foliations and ODEs, the topological invariance of the algebraic multiplicity of a holomorphic foliation. For instance, we prove an adapted version of A'Campo-Lê's Theorem for foliations, i.e., the algebraic multiplicity equal to one is a topological invariant in dimension two. This result is further generalized to higher dimensions under mild conditions; as a consequence, we prove that saddle-nodes are topologically invariant. We prove that the algebraic multiplicity is a topological invariant in several classes of foliations that contain, for instance, the generalized curves and the foliations of second type. Additionally, we address a fundamental result by Rosas-Bazan, which states that the existence of a homeomorphism extending through a neighborhood of the exceptional divisor of the first blow-up implies the topological invariance of the algebraic multiplicity. We show that the result holds if the homeomorphism extends locally near a singularity, even if it does not extend over the entire divisor.

Abstract:The focal sets of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres with g=4 are all Willmore submanifolds, being minimal but mostly non-Einstein [25], [22]. Inspired by A. Gray's view, the present paper shows that these focal sets are all A-manifolds but rarely Ricci parallel, except possibly for the only unclassified case. As a byproduct, it gives infinitely many simply-connected examples to the problem 16.56(i) of Besse concerning generalizations of the Einstein condition.
Quadratic differentials and foliations on infinite Riemann surfaces

Abstract:We prove that an infinite Riemann surface $X$ is parabolic ($X\in O_G$) if and only if the union of the horizontal trajectories of any integrable holomorphic quadratic differential that are cross-cuts is of zero measure. Then we establish the density of the Jenkins-Strebel differentials in the space of all integrable quadratic differentials when $X\in O_G$ and extend Kerckhoff's formula for the Teichmüller metric in this case. Our methods depend on extending to infinite surfaces the Hubbard-Masur theorem describing which measured foliations can be realized by horizontal trajectories of integrable holomorphic quadratic differentials.

Abstract:Just as non-commutative gauge theories arise from quantising open strings in a large magnetic field, non-Abelian two-form gauge theories may conceivably be constructed by quantising open membranes in a large three-form magnetic background. We make some observations that arise in following this strategy, with an emphasis on the relation to the quantisation of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms (vpd). In particular, we construct consistent non-Abelian interactions of a two-form in 3+1 dimensions, based on gauge invariance under vpd.
