Abstract:Transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers are broadly used for background-limited astrophysical measurements from the far-infrared to mm-waves. Many planned future instruments require increasingly large detector arrays, but their scalability is limited by their cryogenic readout electronics. Microwave SQUID multiplexing offers a highly capable scaling solution through the use of inherently broadband circuitry, enabling readout of hundreds to thousands of channels per microwave line. As with any multiplexing technique, the channelization mechanism gives rise to electrical crosstalk which must be understood and controlled so as to not degrade the instrument sensitivity. Here, we explore implications relevant for TES bolometer array applications, focusing in particular on upcoming mm-wave observatories such as the Simons Observatory and AliCPT. We model the relative contributions of the various underlying crosstalk mechanisms, evaluate the difference between fixed tone and tone-tracking readout systems, and discuss ways in which crosstalk nonlinearity will complicate on-sky measurements.

Abstract:In order to pursue high-precision beam position measurements for free-electron laser facilities, a cavity beam position monitor (CBPM) is employed to measure the transverse position that can meet the requirement of position resolution at a sub-micrometer or even nanometer scale. However, for the pill-box cavity BPM, crosstalk between the cavities will have an effect on the accurate measurement of beam position. To reduce the effect of crosstalk on CBPM performance and ease the measurement of the isolation between the cavities, the cavities with a slight difference in resonant frequency were designed and applied in the Dalian coherent light source and Shanghai soft X-ray free-electron laser facilities. Furthermore, two methods, the principal component analysis method and the method of harmonic analysis, are proposed in this paper to evaluate the crosstalk. The results demonstrate that the two methods are feasible in evaluating the crosstalk between the cavities.
Characterization of LSST CCDs Using Realistic Images, Before First Light

Abstract:The 3.2 gigapixel LSST camera, an array of 189 thick fully-depleted CCDs, will repeatedly image the southern sky and accomplish a wide variety of science goals. However, its trove of tens of billions of object images implies stringent requirements on systematic biases imprinted during shift-and-stare CCD observation. In order to correct for these biases which, without correction, violate requirements on weak lensing precision, we investigate CCD systematics using both simulations of charge transport as well as with a unique bench-top optical system matched to the LSST's fast f/1.2 beam. By illuminating single CCDs with realistic scenes of stars and galaxies and then analyzing these images with the LSST data management pipelines, we can characterize the survey's imaging performance well before the camera's first light. We present measurements of several CCD systematics under varying conditions in the laboratory, including the brightness-dependent broadening of star and galaxy images, charge transport anomalies in the silicon bulk as well as the edges, and serial deferred charge. Alongside these measurements, we also present the development and testing of physics-based models which inform corrections or mitigation strategies for these systematics. Optimization of the CCD survey operation under a variety of realistic observational conditions, including systematic effects from the optics, clocking, sky brightness, and image analysis, will be critical to achieve the LSST's goals of precision astronomy and cosmology.

Signatures of Thermal and Electrical Crosstalk in a Microwave Multiplexed Hard X-ray Transition Edge Sensor Array

Abstract:We investigate the crosstalk between Transition-Edge Sensor (TES) pixels in a prototype 24-pixel hard X-ray array fabricated at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory. Analysis shows thermal cross talk, possibly associated with insufficient thermalization, and rare but large in magnitude electrical crosstalk between specific perpetrator-victim pixel combinations, potentially due to deficiencies in the bias wiring or microwave multiplexing circuit. We use a method based on group triggering and averaging to isolate the crosstalk response despite only having access to X-ray photon illumination uniform across the entire array. This allows us to identify thermal and electrical crosstalk between pixel pairs in repeated measurements to the level of 1 part in 1000 or better. In the array under study, the magnitude of observed crosstalk is small but comparable to the resolving power of this pixel design (E/$\Delta$E $\sim$ 1000 at 20 keV) and so potentially responsible for a degradation in energy resolution of the array at high incident photon rates. Having proven the methods to identify and quantify crosstalk in our setup, we can consider mitigations.

Abstract:Our group is currently testing large format high frame rate low noise deep-depletion CCD detectors developed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory for future x-ray missions, such as AXIS. This new generation of detectors makes use of pJFET transistors for output signal readout which results in much lower noise than commonly used MOSFET-based circuits. It also incorporates single-level polysilicon gate structure enabling fast charge transfer with very low clock amplitude. We achieved the level of noise of two electrons rms at 2 MHz rate with six frames/s readout, bringing performance level close to the requirements of AXIS mission. Trying to improve parallel speed we encountered an unexpected phenomenon related to interaction between bias substrate and state of inversion near the CCD gates. This effect reveals an important trade space for selecting mode of operation for large x-ray CCD arrays.

Abstract:We have characterized and mapped the electrical cross talk (ECT) of a frequency division multiplexing (FDM) system with a transition edge sensor (TES) bolometer array, which is intended for space applications. By adding a small modulation at 120 Hz to the AC bias voltage of one bolometer and measuring the cross talk response in the current noise spectra of the others simultaneously, we have for the first time mapped the ECT level of 61 pixels with a nominal frequency spacing of 32 kHz in a 61 × 61 matrix and a carrier frequency ranging from 1 MHz to 4 MHz. We find that about 94% of the pixels show an ECT level of less than 0.4%. Only the adjacent pixels reach this level, and the ECT for the rest of the pixels is less than 0.1%. We also observe higher ECT levels, up to 10%, between some of the pixels, which have bundled long, parallel coplanar wires connecting TES bolometers to inductor-capacitor filters. In this case, the high mutual inductances dominate. To mitigate this source of ECT, the coplanar wires should be replaced by microstrip wires in the array. Our study suggests that an FDM system can have a relatively low ECT level, e.g., around 0.4% if the frequency spacing is 30 kHz. Our results successfully demonstrate a low electrical cross talk for a space FDM technology.
Photometry, Centroid and Point-Spread Function Measurements in the LSST Camera Focal Plane Using Artificial Stars

Abstract:The Vera C. Rubin Observatory's LSST Camera (LSSTCam) pixel response has been characterized using laboratory measurements with a grid of artificial stars. We quantify the contributions to photometry, centroid, point-spread function size, and shape measurement errors due to small anomalies in the LSSTCam CCDs. The main sources of those anomalies are quantum efficiency variations and pixel area variations induced by the amplifier segmentation boundaries and "tree-rings" - circular variations in silicon doping concentration. This laboratory study using artificial stars projected on the sensors shows overall small effects. The residual effects on point-spread function (PSF) size and shape are below $0.1\%$, meeting the ten-year LSST survey science requirements. However, the CCD mid-line presents distortions that can have a moderate impact on PSF measurements. This feature can be avoided by masking the affected regions. Effects of tree-rings are observed on centroids and PSFs of the artificial stars and the nature of the effect is confirmed by a study of the flat-field response. Nevertheless, further studies of the full-focal plane with stellar data should more completely probe variations and might reveal new features, e.g. wavelength-dependent effects. The results of this study can be used as a guide for the on-sky operation of LSSTCam.

Investigation of Deferred Charge Effects in LSST ITL Sensors

Abstract:The traditional characterization of charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) in charge-coupled devices (CCDs) can suffer from a number of deficiencies: CTI is often only calculated for a limited number of signal levels, CTI is calculated from a limited number of pixels, and the sources of CTI are usually assumed to occur at every pixel-to-pixel transfer. A number of serial CTI effects have been identified during preliminary testing of CCDs developed by Imaging Technology Laboratory (ITL) for use in the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) camera focal plane that motivate additional study beyond the traditional CTI characterization. This study describes a more detailed examination of the serial deferred charge effects in order to fully characterize the deferred charge measured in the serial overscan pixels of these sensors. The results indicate that in addition to proportional CTI loss that occurs at each pixel transfer, ITL CCDs have additional contributions to the deferred charge measured in serial overscan pixels, likely caused by fixed CTI loss due to charge trapping, and an electronic offset drift at high signal.

Abstract:Time division SQUID multiplexing is being developed as the TES readout technology for the ATHENA X-ray integral field unit and CMB-S4. Close packing of TDM and dc-biased SQUID components is motivated by chip area constraints but has resulted in significant physical neighbor crosstalk in previous generation chips. We present techniques to reduce physical neighbor crosstalk in both linear and two dimensional (2D) TDM chips as well as measurements of crosstalk in these chips.

Abstract:The ambitious science goals of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) have motivated a search for new and unexpected sources of systematic error in the LSST camera. Flat field images are a rich source of data on sensor anomalies, although such effects are typically dwarfed by shot noise in a single flat field. After combining many (0∼50) such images into ‘ultraflats’ to reduce the impact of shot noise, we perform photon transfer analysis on a pixel-by-pixel basis and observe no spatial structure in pixel linearity or gain at light levels of 100 ke− and below. At 125 ke−, a columnar structure is observed in the gain map—we attribute this to a flux-dependent charge-transfer inefficiency. We also probe small-scale variations in effective pixel size by analyzing pixel-neighbor correlations in ultraflat images, where we observe clear evidence of intrinsic variation in effective pixel size in an LSST prototype sensor near the ∼ .3% level.

Abstract:Structured light offers wider bandwidths and higher security for communication. However, propagation through complex random media, such as the Earth's atmosphere, typically induces intermodal crosstalk. Abstract:Intrapixel nonuniformity is known to exist in CCD and CMOS image sensors, though the effects in backside illuminated (BSI) CCDs are too small to be a concern for most astronomical observations. However, projects like the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope require precise knowledge of the detector characteristics, and intrapixel effects may need more attention. By scanning CCD and CMOS cameras with a small light spot (unresolved by the optics), we find in the images that the spot's flux, centroid displacement, and ellipticity vary periodically on the pixel scale in most cases. The amplitude of variation depends on not only the detector but also how well the spot is sampled by the pixels. With a spot radius of 2 pixels (encircling 80% energy) as measured, the flux and the ellipticity extracted from the BSI CCD camera vary by 0.2-0.3% (rms) and 0.005 (rms), respectively, while the deviation of the centroid position (rms ~ 0.01 pixel) is not correlated with the pixels. The effects are more pronounced for the BSI CMOS camera and even worse for the frontside illuminated CMOS camera. The results suggest that a closer examination of the intrapixel effects is needed for precision astronomy.

Crosstalk Analysis of Suprime-Cam FDCCDs Using Cosmic Rays in Dark Frames

Abstract:We analyzed the crosstalks in the new full depleted CCDs in the Subaru Prime Focus Camera(Suprime-Cam). The effect is evaluated quantitatively using cosmic rays in dark frames. The crosstalk is well approximated by a linear correlation and the coefficient is ~ 10^-4. The coefficients are not significantly different among the 10 CCDs. We also find that the crosstalk appears not only in the corresponding pixels but also in the next pixel but one. No crosstalk is detected in Suprime-Cam among different CCDs. Based on the analysis, the correction procedure for the crosstalk is presented, and the application to the data is demonstrated.

Abstract:As the pixel size scales down to the submicron, the electrical crosstalk between adjacent pixels becomes more noticeable. The device structure and electrical properties greatly affect the electrical crosstalk. In this work, the doping optimization in UTBB image sensor for crosstalk suppression is investigated. In UTBB image sensor, the electrical crosstalk can be suppressed by high well doping concentration. Besides, the decline of light sensitivity induced by high well doping concentration is also investigated.

Abstract:The third generation South Pole Telescope camera (SPT-3G) improves upon its predecessor (SPTpol) by an order of magnitude increase in detectors on the focal plane. The technology used to read out and control these detectors, digital frequency-domain multiplexing (DfMUX), is conceptually the same as used for SPTpol, but extended to accommodate more detectors. A nearly 5x expansion in the readout operating bandwidth has enabled the use of this large focal plane, and SPT-3G performance meets the forecasting targets relevant to its science objectives. However, the electrical dynamics of the higher-bandwidth readout differ from predictions based on models of the SPTpol system due to the higher frequencies used, and parasitic impedances associated with new cryogenic electronic architecture. To address this, we present an updated derivation for electrical crosstalk in higher-bandwidth DfMUX systems, and identify two previously uncharacterized contributions to readout noise, which become dominant at high bias frequency. The updated crosstalk and noise models successfully describe the measured crosstalk and readout noise performance of SPT-3G. These results also suggest specific changes to warm electronics component values, wire-harness properties, and SQUID parameters, to improve the readout system for future experiments using DfMUX, such as the LiteBIRD space telescope.
