Abstract:The Mpemba paradox, that is, hotter water freezes faster than colder water, has baffled thinkers like Francis Bacon, Rene Descartes, and Aristotle since B.C. 350. However, a commonly accepted understanding or theoretical reproduction of this effect remains challenging. Numerical reproduction of observations, shown herewith, confirms that water skin supersolidity [Zhang et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., DOI: 10.1039/C1034CP02516D] enhances the local thermal diffusivity favoring heat flowing outwardly in the liquid path. Analysis of experimental database reveals that the hydrogen bond (O:H-O) possesses memory to emit energy at a rate depending on its initial storage. Unlike other usual materials that lengthen and soften all bonds when they absorb thermal energy, water performs abnormally under heating to lengthen the O:H nonbond and shorten the H-O covalent bond through inter-oxygen Coulomb coupling [Sun et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett., 2013, 4, 3238]. Cooling does the opposite to release energy, like releasing a coupled pair of bungees, at a rate of history dependence. Being sensitive to the source volume, skin radiation, and the drain temperature, the Mpemba effect proceeds only in the strictly non-adiabatic 'source-path-drain' cycling system for the heat "emission-conduction-dissipation" dynamics with a relaxation time that drops exponentially with the rise of the initial temperature of the liquid source.

Abstract:Water skin is the toughest of ever known with a mechanism that remains unclear. We show phonon spectrometrically that molecular undercoordination induced hydrogen bond (O:HO) relaxation and nonbonding electron polarization furnished the skin with the supersolid nature – less dense, elastic, thermally more stable than the bulk. Heating from 5 to 95°C stiffens the skin HO phonon (or bond stiffness) from 3443cm−1 by 0.38%, and the bulk phonon from 3239cm−1 by 1.48%, but softens the HO dangling bonds from 3604cm−1 by −0.40%. Heating also changes the respective molecular structural order and phonon abundance by −8.4/−19.7%, 4.9/−2.6%, and 13.0/137.0%. Observations also evidenced that both heating and molecular undercoordination have the same effect on O:HO bond relaxation but opposite on polarization, which improves our understanding of the anomalous skin of liquid water.

Abstract:We present recent progress in understanding the anomalous behavior of water ice under mechanical compression, thermal excitation, and molecular undercoordination (with fewer than four nearest neighbors in the bulk) from the perspective of hydrogen (O:HO) bond cooperative relaxation. We modestly claim the resolution of upwards of ten best known puzzles. Extending the Ice Rule suggests a tetrahedral block that contains two H2O molecules and four O:HO bonds. This block unifies the density-geometry-size-separation of molecules packing in water ice. This extension also clarifies the flexible and polarizable O:HO bond that performs like a pair of asymmetric, coupled, H-bridged oscillators with short-range interactions and memory as well as extreme recoverability. Coulomb repulsion between electron pairs on adjacent oxygen atoms and the disparity between the O:H and the HO segmental interactions relax the O:HO bond length and energy cooperatively under stimulation. A Lagrangian solution has enabled mapping of the potential paths for the O:HO bond at relaxation. The HO bond relaxation shifts the melting point, O 1s binding energy, and high-frequency phonon frequency whereas the O:H relaxation dominates polarization, viscoelasticity, and the O:H dissociation energy. The developed strategies have enabled clarification of origins of the following observations: (i) pressure-induced proton centralization, phase transition-temperature depression and ice regelation; (ii) thermally induced four-region oscillation of the mass density and the phonon frequency over the full temperature range; and (iii) molecular-undercoordination-induced supersolidity that is elastic, hydrophobic, thermally stable, with ultra-low density. The supersolid skin is responsible for the slipperiness of ice, the hydrophobicity and toughness of water skin, and the bi-phase structure of nanodroplets and nanobubbles. Molecular undercoordination mediates the O:H and HO bond Debye temperatures and disperses the quasi-solid phase boundary, resulting in freezing point depression and melting point elevation. O:HO bond memory and water-skin supersolidity ensures a solution to the Mpemba paradox — hot water freezes faster than its cold. These understandings will pave the way toward unveiling anomalous behavior of H2O interacting with other species such as salts, acids and proteins, and excitation of H2O by other stimuli such as electrical and magnetic fields.
A Supersolid Skin Covering both Water and Ice

Abstract:The mysterious nature and functionality of water and ice skins remain baffling to the community since 1859 when Farady firstly proposed liquid skin lubricating ice. Here we show the presence of supersolid phase that covers both water and ice using Raman spectroscopy measurements and quantum calculations. In the skin of two molecular layers thick, molecular undercoordination shortens the H-O bond by ~16% and lengthens the OH nonbond by ~25% through repulsion between electron pairs on adjacent O atoms, which depresses the density from 0.92 for bulk ice to 0.75 gcm-3. The O:H-O cooperative relaxation stiffens the H-O stretching phonon from 3200/3150 cm-1 to the same value of 3450 cm-1 and raises the melting temperature of both skins by up to ~310 K. Numerical derivatives on the viscosity and charge accumulation suggests that the elastic, polarized, and thermally stable supersolid phase makes the ice frictionless and water skin hydrophobic and ice like at room temperature.
Skin Supersolidity Matters the Performance and Functionality of Water Droplets

Abstract:Even more fascinating than the bulk parent, water droplets possess the extraordinary catalytic capability, chemical reactivity, elastic adaptivity, hydrophobicity, hydro-voltaicity, sensitivity, thermal stability, and so forth, with an elusive underlying mechanism. We show that molecular undercoordination polarizes the surface molecules and lengthens 8% of the O—O distance by shortening the intramolecular H-O bond and lengthening the intermolecular O:H nonbond, making the skin a supersolid phase and surface self-electrified. The sequential events follow the HBCP (hydrogen bond cooperativity and polarizability) and the BOLS-NEP (bond order-length-strength correlation and nonbonding electron polarization) regulations. The size dependence of the H-O bond stiffness or its phonon frequency shift H, the freezing temperature TN depression or the O:H cohesive energy loss, the polarizability, and the electronic and phonon lifetimes vary with the skin-volume ratio to the entire R-sized droplet. We determined that the H-O bond is 10% shorter and vibrates at 3450 cm-1 frequency in the 0.3 nm thick skin of 75% mass density by refining the skin phonon abundance F(R) population. The skin supersolidity and surface self-electrification could entitle the performance and functionality of the droplets. Further extension of the findings could impact the undercoordinated aqueous systems, including bubbles and molecular clusters.

Abstract:Consistency in experimental observations, numerical calculations, and theoretical predictions have revealed that the skins of water and ice share the same attribute of supersolidity characterized by an identical H-O vibration frequency of 3450 cm(-1). Molecular undercoordination and inter-electronpair repulsion shortens the H-O bond and lengthens the O:H nonbond, leading to a dual process of nonbonding electron polarization. Abstract:We demonstrate that the Mpemba paradox arises intrinsically from the release rate of energy initially stored in the covalent H-O part of the O:H-O bond in water albeit experimental conditions. Generally, heating raises the energy of a substance by lengthening and softening all bonds involved. However, the O:H nonbond in water follows actively the general rule of thermal expansion and drives the H-O covalent bond to relax oppositely in length and energy because of the inter-electron-electron pair coupling [J Phys Chem Lett 4, 2565 (2013); ibid 4, 3238 (2013)]. Heating stores energy into the H-O bond by shortening and stiffening it. Cooling the water as the source in a refrigerator as a drain, the H-O bond releases its energy at a rate that depends exponentially on the initially storage of energy, and therefore, Mpemba effect happens. This effect is formulated in terms of the relaxation time tau to represent all possible processes of energy loss. Consistency between predictions and measurements revealed that the tau drops exponentially intrinsically with the initial temperature of the water being cooled.

Abstract:The notion of asymmetrical Hydrogen Bond (O:H-O) Cooperativity and Polarizability (HBCP) has enabled exploration of the core physics behind irregularities of water and ice, particularly, the evolution of mass density, phase stability, energy exchange, and their transition velocity under perturbation. We humbly share the initiatives of the quasisolidity presented between Liquid and Ice, the supersolidity pertained to polarization by electrification or molecular undercoordination, and the HF H and O:q:O repulsivity owing to the respective injection of excessive protons and lone pairs to the liquid by solvation. The O-O repulsivity forms the key that drives the O:H-O bond to cooperatively relax its segmental length, cohesive energy, vibration frequency, and specific heat upon perturbation, which establishes an efficient set of parameters to feature the bonding and electronic dynamics in the frequency-space-time domains. An interplay of the segmental specific heats defines the mass densities, phase boundaries, and the exotic quasisolid (QS) phase that exhibits negative thermal expansivity through H-O contracting less than the scale of O:H expansion upon cooling. However, the H-O bond undergoes cooling elongation in the Liquid and the Ice-I phase and remains silent in the XI phase. H-O bond absorbs energy by contraction and does it inverse at expansion. The O:H nonbond always relaxes more than the H-O bond does in contrasting direction. Mechanical compression symmetrizes the O:H-O segmental length associated with polarization, which disperses inwardly the QS phase boundary to lower the Tm for melting but raise the temperature TN for ice nucleation and the TV for evaporation, resulting in the phenomena of ice regelation and instant-ice formation. Polarization, however, has the contrast effect to compression on the hydrogen bond relaxation and phase transition. The polarization converts the pristine water into the gel -like, hydrophobic, and viscoelastic supersolid which is less-dense and thermally more diffusive and stable, entitling surface premelting, superheating at Tm, and supercooling at TN and TV. Polarization enhances the dielectrics of water and widens the bandgap of ice. The supersolidity ensures the 120 K superelasticity of ice microfibers and the 330 K stability of the electrified water bridge crossing the rims of infilled containers. The high elasticity of the softer O:H nonbond and the interface electrostatic repulsivity secure the slipperiness of ice and the superfluidity of water traveling in fine channels. The skin supersolidity and the O:H-O bond memorability uniquely foster the Mpemba effect - warm water cools more quickly. The HF H or O:q:O repulsivity modifies the bonding network and solution properties through solvent H-O bond elongation, solute H-O bond contraction, and polarization. The HBCP premise has thus correlated the irregularity of water and ice to the O:H-O bonding and electronic dynamics under perturbation. Further extension of the HBCP to aqueous and molecular assemblies involved with electron lone pairs and coupling interactions could be even more fascinating and profoundly promising.(c) 2022 The Author(s). Abstract:When a hot system cools down faster than an equivalent cold one, it exhibits the Mpemba Effect. This counterintuitive phenomenon was observed in several systems including water, magnetic alloys and polymers. In most experiments the system is coupled to the bath through its boundaries, but all theories so far assumed bulk coupling. Here we build a general framework for boundary coupling relaxation and show that the Mpemba effect persists in these cases. Surprisingly, it can survive even an arbitrarily weak couplings. An example is given in the Ising antiferromagnetic chain.

Abstract:Regelation, i.e., ice melts under compression and freezes again when the pressure is relieved, remains puzzling since its discovery in 1850’s by Faraday. Here we show that hydrogen bond (O:H-O) cooperativity and its extraordinary recoverability resolve this anomaly. The H-O bond and the O:H nonbond possesses each a specific heat ηx(T/ΘDx) whose Debye temperature ΘDx is proportional to its characteristic phonon frequency ωx according to Einstein’s relationship. A superposition of the ηx(T/ΘDx) curves for the H-O bond (x = H, ωH ~ 3200 cm−1) and the O:H nonbond (x = L, ωL ~ 200 cm−1, ΘDL = 198 K) yields two intersecting temperatures that define the liquid/quasisolid/solid phase boundaries. Compression shortens the O:H nonbond and stiffens its phonon but does the opposite to the H-O bond through O-O Coulomb repulsion, which closes up the intersection temperatures and hence depress the melting temperature of quasisolid ice. Reproduction of the Tm(P) profile clarifies that the H-O bond energy EH determines the Tm with derivative of EH = 3.97 eV for bulk water and ice. Oxygen atom always finds bonding partners to retain its sp3-orbital hybridization once the O:H breaks, which ensures O:H-O bond recoverability to its original state once the pressure is relieved.
Simulations of Mpemba Effect in WATER, Lennard-Jones and Ising Models: Metastability vs Critical Fluctuations

Abstract:Via molecular dynamics simulations we study ICE formation in the TIP4P/Ice model that is known to describe structure and dynamics in various phases of WATER accurately. For this purpose well equilibrated configurations from different initial temperatures, Ts, belonging to the fluid phase, are quenched to a fixed subzero temperature. Our results on kinetics, for a wide range of Ts, following such quenches, show quicker crystallization of samples that are hotter at the beginning. This implies the presence of the puzzling Mpemba effect (ME). Via a similar study, we also identify ME in fluid to solid transitions in a Lennard-Jones (LJ) model. In the latter case, the ME appears purely as an outcome of the influence of critical fluctuations on the nonequilibrium growth process, for which we present interesting scaling results. For the TIP4P/Ice case, on the other hand, we show that delay in nucleation, due to metastability, can alone be a driving factor for the exhibition of ME. To substantiate the difference between the two cases, we also present LJ-like scaling results for ME in a magnetic transition. Our simulations indicate that in each of the systems the effect can be observed independent of the cooling rate that may vary when samples from different Ts are brought in contact with a heat reservoir working at a fixed lower temperature.

The Exotic Quasisolidity and Supersolidity of Water

Abstract:Water is ubiquitously important but least known. This perspective features the latest finding of two exotic forms of water called quasisolid and supersolid phases due to the cooperativity and disparity of the O:H-O bond in its segmental length, energy, and specific heat when subjected to thermal, electric, and undercoordination perturbation. The quasisolid (QS) phase only appears at temperatures between melting and ice nucleation, regardless of sample size, and this phase has a negative thermal expansivity (NTE). However, polarization or molecular undercoordination creates the supersolid phase in skins of water and ice, droplets, ionic hydration cells, and volumetric water with a current flow or under a 106 eV/cm electric bias. This phase is characterized by ~10% H-O bond contraction and vibrating at ~3450 cm-1. The supersolid has unique properties such as high elasticity, mechanical strength, optical reflectivity, structure order, thermal stability, diffusivity, catalytic activity, and chemical reactivity. Liquid-QS-Ice transition with QS phase energy absorption occurs for water due to H-O bond contraction during thermal decay but not for the supersolid phase of saturated NaCl solution. The NTE of the QS fosters ice buoyancy and the supersolidity endows ice slipperiness, supercooling, superheating, premelting, low-temperature fiber elasticity, water bridge, and warm water fast cooling, as well as on water chemistry.

Abstract:The quicker freezing of hotter water, than a colder sample, when quenched to a common lower temperature, is referred to as the Mpemba effect (ME). While this counter-intuitive fact remains a surprize since long, efforts have begun to identify similar effect in other systems. Here we investigate the ME in a rather general context concerning magnetic phase transitions. From Monte Carlo simulations of model systems, viz., the $q$-state Potts model and the Ising model, with varying range of interaction and space dimension, we assert that hotter paramagnets undergo ferromagnetic ordering faster than the colder ones. The above conclusion we have arrived at following the analyses of the simulation results on decay of energy and growth in ordering following quenches from different starting temperatures, to fixed final temperatures below the Curie points. We have obtained a unique scaling picture, on the strength of the effect, with respect to the variation in spatial correlation in the initial states. These results are valid irrespective of the order of transition and relevant to the understanding of ME in other systems, including water.

Coulomb Repulsion at the Nanometer-Sized Contact: A Force Driving Superhydrophobicity, Superfluidity, Superlubricity, and Supersolidity

Abstract:Superhydrophobicity, superfluidity, superlubricity, and supersolidity (4S) at the nanometer-sized liquid-solid or solid-solid contacting interfaces have long been issues of puzzling with the common characteristics of nonsticky and frictionless motion. Although the 4S occurrences have been extensively investigated, the mechanism behind the common characteristics remains unclear. From the perspectives of broken-bond-induced local strain and the skin-depth charge and energy quantum trapping and the associated nonbonding electron polarization, we proposed herewith that the Coulomb repulsion between the "electric monopoles or dipoles locked in the elastic solid skins or the solidlike covering sheets of liquid droplets" forms the key to the 4S. The localized energy densification makes the skin stiffer and the densely and tightly trapped bonding charges polarize nonbonding electrons, if exist, to form locked skin monopoles. In addition, the sp-orbit hybridization of F, O, N, or C upon reacting with solid atoms generates nonbonding lone pairs or Unpaired edge electrons that induce dipoles directing into the open end of a surface. The monopoles and dipoles can be, however, demolished by UV radiation, thermal excitation, or excessively applied compression due to ionization or sp orbit dehybridization. Such a Coulomb repulsion between the negatively charged skins of the contacting objects not only lowers the effective contacting force and hence the friction but also prevents charge from being exchanged between the counterparts of the contact. Being similar to magnetic levitation, such Coulomb repulsion should be the force driving the 4S. Density function theory calculations, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, and very low energy electron diffraction measurements have been conducted to verify the proposal. In particular, agreement between theory predictions and the measured size dependence of the elastic modulus, lattice strain, core-electron binding energy shift, and band gap expansion of nanostructures evidence the validity of the proposal of interface Coulomb repulsion.

Abstract:We investigate the relation between changes in dynamic and thermodynamic anomalies arising from the presence of the liquid-liquid critical point in (i) Two models of water, TIP5P and ST2, which display a first order liquid-liquid phase transition at low temperatures; (ii) the Jagla model, a spherically symmetric two-scale potential known to possess a liquid-liquid critical point, in which the competition between two liquid structures is generated by repulsive and attractive ramp interactions; and (iii) A Hamiltonian model of water where the idea of two length/energy scales is built in; this model also displays a first order liquid-liquid phase transition at low temperatures besides the first order liquid-gas phase transition at high temperatures. We find a correlation between the dynamic fragility crossover and the locus of specific heat maxima C-P(max) ("Widom line") emanating from the critical point. Our findings are consistent with a possible relation between the previously hypothesized liquid-liquid phase transition and the transition in the dynamics recently observed in neutron scattering experiments on confined water. More generally, we argue that this connection between C-P(max) P and the dynamic crossover is not limited to the case of water, a hydrogen bonded network liquid, but is a more general feature of crossing the Widom line, an extension of the first-order coexistence line in the supercritical region. We present evidence from experiments and computer simulations supporting the hypothesis that water displays polyamorphism, i.e., water separates into two distinct liquid phases. This concept of a new liquid-liquid phase transition is finding application to other liquids as well as water, such as silicon and silica. We also discuss related puzzles, such as the mysterious behavior of confined water and the "skin" of hydration water near a biomolecule. Specifically, using molecular dynamics simulations, we also investigate the relation between the dynamic transitions of biomolecules (lysozyme and DNA) and the dynamic and thermodynamic properties of hydration water. We find that the dynamic transition of the macromolecules, sometimes called a "protein glass transition", occurs at the temperature of dynamic crossover in the diffusivity of hydration water, and also coincides with the maxima of the isobaric specific heat C-P and the temperature derivative of the orientational order parameter. We relate these findings to the hypothesis of a liquid-liquid critical point in water. Our simulations are consistent with the possibility that the protein glass transition results from a change in the behavior of hydration water, specifically from crossing the Widom line.

Abstract:The counterintuitive phenomenon-that an initially hotter water freezes faster than initially cooler water-is named the "Mpemba effect." Although it has been known for centuries, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Recently, the Mpemba effect rekindled the interest of researchers since several studies identified that it might occur in some Markovian systems, and a general statistical-physical Mpemba effect framework was correspondingly proposed. In our previous study [Z.-Y. Yang and J.-X. Hou, Phys. Rev. E 101, 052106 (2020)10.1103/PhysRevE.101.052106], we observed the non-Markovian Mpemba effect in a mean-field system (MFS), where the Mpemba effect originates from the back-reaction of the thermal reservoir. Naturally, the phase transition time is the key to the occurrence of the Mpemba effect, which, however, has not been quantitatively described. Following the direction of previous work, this study rigorously derives the phase transition time under different conditions, and quantitatively describes the mechanism of the non-Markovian Mpemba effect in a MFS. In addition, the validation of our theory was further verified via the microcanonical Monte Carlo simulation. An accurate description of the underlying mechanism of our proposed MFS facilitates the generalization of the Mpemba effect framework in statistical physics and may benefit in answering the riddle of the century, the original Mpemba effect in water.
