Abstract:Yu Dafu’s work “Sinking” portrays the life of a young man studying in Japan from his perspective. It particularly emphasizes depicting personal experiences through the character’s psychology and dialogue. Additionally, it uses character choices as metaphors for the pain of modernization faced by contemporary China. This article uses the protagonist’s image in “Sinking” as an example to deduce cognition through social and historical backgrounds. It combines the theory of modernity and decadence and examines its characteristics from national consciousness, civil identity cognition, and changes in moral concepts. The analysis of modernity’s characteristics demonstrates how “Sinking” illustrates the problems in Chinese society’s modernization and the fundamental reason why the character behaves this way. The practical issues depicted in the novel confirm the various challenges faced by modern Chinese society’s modernization and how the youth of this era developed, thereby showcasing Yu Dafu’s concern for reality and awareness of social responsibility.

Abstract:During its evolution Chinese moral education has developed pronounced ideological aspects. This stems from traditions of first equating politics with morality, phrasing them both in the same language, and then of encouraging correct moral and political relations and behaviours through education. This trend dates back three thousand years to Zhou Gong and continued through Confucius and his followers. From 1949, through the Cultural Revolution and the present transition to a market economy, a similarly unified approach to political, ideological and moral education has been effected through the organizational medium of deyu. As well as providing a historical overview, this paper examines the ideological function and political structure of deyu and the changes that are occurring within it. In the light of current changes in China, deyu is now starting to shift its focus away from ideological education and towards citizenship education. This reflects important changes in core values, to include individualism, economic initiative and consumerism, all of which confront Chinese society and education with distinct challenges and opportunities, and suggest even further reform of deyu during the 21st century.

Abstract:The relevance of the research is determined by the interest of modern literary criticism to the issues of reflection in the artistic word of the processes of perception of each other by ethnic groups. The novelty of the work is defined by the appeal to the previously unpublished in Russia and not studied text of the collection by Yu Dafu Chen Lun as a source of reconstruction of the image of Japan's perception by the Chinese intelligentsia of the 1920s-1940s and self-perception. The problem of the research is to reconstruct the semantic content of the Chinese lexeme 沉论 (Chen Lun) as an artistic concept of the image of Japan's perception and self-perception of the Chinese living there. The purpose of the work is to explicate the ideological and psychological mechanisms of creating images of perception and self-perception of the Chinese in the prose of Yu Dafu as a representative of the Left Wing of Chinese literature in the 1920s-1940s. The methodology of the work is based on a comparative analysis of the ideological and thematic content of the book and the semantics of the title of the collection, translations of these titles into Russian and English in different historical periods. The author uses historical-literary, comparative-historical methods, lexical-semantic analysis, comparative analysis of translation and translations with the original, conceptual analysis. On the basis of a comparative analysis of Russian and English translations of story titles (〇mut - Whirlpool), a lexical and semantic analysis of the word 沉论, key concepts and ideas of the collection, the author proposes another version of the translation into Russian as Pogryazshie (Drowned). The heroes of the Yu Dafu collection are young reflective Chinese intellectuals who came to Japan in the mid-1910s, have ambivalent feelings: the desire to see in Japan and the Japanese a model for self-improvement, and at the same time - dislike for the “higher” culture in relation to China. This study helps to reconstruct with psychological certainty the image of perception of Japan and the Japanese by revolutionary-minded Chinese youth of the 1920s, to explicate their image of self-perception, ideas about their own ethnos and ways of development of the Chinese state and Chinese ethnicity in this historical period. A REPRESENTATION OF THE MODERN CHINESE YOUTH IN YU DAFU ’ S NOVELS

Abstract:Abstract Yu Da-fu is a writer who marked the beginning of modern Chinese literature. Working as a member of Creation Society (Chuangzao she, 創造社), Yu became a pioneer of new style in Chinese literature in the sense that he initiated the new style of lyrical novels in Chinese literature and portrayed the awakening and frustrations of the modern self. As many young Chinese intellectuals did at the time, he developed the awakening of the modern self in the empire of Japan. Yu became a literary figure during his study in Japan, where he experienced diaspora by living right in the belly of the empire. He borrowed a form of modern Japanese literature, the “I-Novel (shishōsetsu, 私小說),” for his fiction, in a sense, mirroring in his novels his own life. Yu borrowed the form of I-Novel, a confessional genre, and created a representation of a modern Chineseyouth in diaspora. The stories of the “self” he created present both the awakening of the modern self and the frustration of diaspora. In this sense, Yu’s novels are important texts that show a representation of a modern Chinese youth in diaspora—how they have desired the empire and how they have failed.

Abstract:The embodied human subject is dynamically connected to his or her historico-sociocultural context, the soil from which a person’s psyche is nourished as multiplex meanings are absorbed and enable personal development. In each culture certain towering artistic works embody this perspective. The Dream of the Red Chamber introduces Jia Bao-yu—a scion of the prestigious Jia family—and his relationships with a large cast of characters. Bao-yu is controversial but, at the time of the family’s tragic collapse, he can be seen as embodying a spiritual struggle in which his instinct, nature, sensitivity, and creativity are grounded in his transcendent relationship with a fragment of the world stone, an eternal source of energy and creativity. We are invited to draw on a metaphysical level of thought to consider his struggles with man-made hierarchies and a situated historico-sociocultural order in such a way as to live out his spiritual being. As such, the novel is closely relevant to questions of spirituality in bioethics. Through personal experiences, passions, creativity, and relationships with others, the body is inscribed, forming the soul, which may be misconstrued (for instance, through a medical or Cartesian reformulation of events) but which can be seen as the site of ethical and spiritual thought.

Abstract:Zhouyi,a philosophic literature with rich and profound meanings,has an in-depth discussion on discourse action,which is mainly shown in three aspects.First,as to the relations between speech and effect,a good discourse act is an important way to build sound morality such as honesty.Speech action is one of the key factors deciding the moral character of a man of honor.Zhouyi has a characteristic of being"beautiful in language"and"profound in meaning". Speech action is found to be"endless"as well.The second aspect is about the relations between utterance and context.Speech act is closely related to the social state.At the same time,special attention should be given to speaker's mentality and his/her opportunity to speak so as to obtain the anticipated results.Finally,it is emphasized that utterance should really mean something and should be faithful to facts."Inhumanity"and"sycophancy"are criticized,thus deepening the meaning of faithfulness,justice and humanity in the thought of Confucian discourses.

Abstract:A comparative reading of Goethe’s Werther (1774) and Yu Dafu’s Sinking (1921) reveals how modern Chinese literary discourse emerged from an at once invigorating and torturous encounter with modern European literature in the May Fourth period. Reading European literature, as the case of Yu Dafu indicates, is a communicative process that involves complex negotiations on perceptual, libidinal, institutional and other levels. Any act of writing oriented towards a European model necessarily inscribes within itself all the tensions, conflicts, and negotiations attendant upon the reading of European texts. Modern Chinese writing that seeks to model itself on a European literary form is never a copy of this form, but always a protocol of reading it.

Abstract:ON THE TWENTY-FIFTH DAY OF THE FIFTH MONTH OF 1903, SUN BAOXUAN—A SCHOLAR-OFFICIAL IN LATE QING DYNASTY CHINA—documented in his diary that he had acquired a copy of the periodical 新小說 (Xin xiaoshuo; “he New Novel”), founded by Liang Qichao in 1902 to propagate translated fiction and new Chinese fiction. Immediately drawn to the stories and novels it carried, Sun soon concluded that Western fiction had the unique strength of imparting knowledge and expanding rational capacity: 「觀西人政治小說,可以悟政治原理;觀科學小說,可以通種種格物原理;觀包探小說,可以覘西國人情土俗及其居心之險詐詭變,有非我國所能及者」 (“Political novels teach us principles of politics; scientific novels teach us theories of things; detective novels show us Western customs and treachery, which often surpass ours”; 690). Immersed in a culture where vernacular novels had been suppressed by official censorship and prejudice among the elites, Sun ardently embraced translated fiction. By contrast, vernacular Chinese novels, with few exceptions, seemed to him routinely 「陳腐」 (“decadent”), providing no more than 「排遣」 (“diversion and entertainment”; 677, 690) The perceived rationality of Western fiction gave him a sudden license to seriously engage with a genre that the literary culture in China continued to exclude well into the twentieth century. Sun's encounter with foreign fiction marked the early stage of a somewhat bumpy adventure. In later sections of the diary, Sun documents reading sentimental strains of translated fiction and the more ambiguous responses they incited in him.

Abstract:Despite his prominence in modern Chinese literature and the significant role played by translation in his literary career, Yu Dafu’s (1896-1945) activity as a translation theorist and practitioner remains largely unexplored. Yu translated into Chinese a number of short stories, treatises, and poems by such authors as Wilde, Twain, Sinclair, Nietzsche, and Rousseau; he also devoted several essays to the issue of translation and its practice. Through an analysis of Yu’s theoretical writings, I aim to provide a brief account of his reflections on the subjectivity of the translator, the principles of a desirable translating practice, the relation between translation and original writing, and the cultural significance of translation. By doing so, I wish to highlight the seminal role played by such a reflection in Yu’s artistic career, as well as the specificity of his contribution within the intellectual debate on translation in his time.

Abstract:Background: Yu Dafu, arguably one of the greatest writers in modern Chinese history, is characterized by critics as having a sentimental and decadent style. His life is clearly marked by mood bipolarity, and it seems that his creativity was affected by extreme emotional states. However, this link remains unclear. Methods: Yu's self-assessments in his works and letters are analyzed from the perspective of current psychiatric classifications. Examples are extracted from his writing career and habits to help illuminate the relationship between mental disorders and literary creativity. Results: Yu's writing career seems to be divided into four blocks. He was in a deep depression when he studied abroad and taught in China and experienced a hypomanic episode afterward, when he created a magazine and fell in love. The pattern of his mood changes is consistent with the symptoms of bipolar II disorder. His maintenance of a high degree of literary productivity alongside his anguish during depressive episodes may suggests mixed states. Conclusions: Mood changes shaped Yu's life and writing career. Depressive and hypomanic moods enhanced his creativity in several ways, and some situations in his life indicate that writing and literary pursuits also have reverse effects on one's mental state. The perspective that mental disorders are seen as a certain profile of literary career can help us to better understand the writers. Psychopathology
