Abstract:This paper presents a critical analysis of the literature and perspective research ideas for modeling the epidemics caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It goes beyond deterministic population dynamics to consider several key complexity features of the system under consideration. In particular, the multiscale features of the dynamics from contagion to the subsequent dynamics of competition between the immune system and the proliferating virus. Other topics addressed in this work include the propagation of epidemics in a territory, taking into account local transportation networks, the heterogeneity of the population, and the study of social and economic problems in populations involved in the spread of epidemics. The overall content aims to show how new mathematical tools can be developed to address the above topics and how mathematical models and simulations can contribute to the decision making of crisis managers.

Abstract:The global consequences of Coronavirus (COVID-19) have been evident by several hundreds of demises of human beings; hence such plagues are significantly imperative to predict. For this purpose, the mathematical formulation has been proved to be one of the best tools for the assessment of present circumstances and future predictions. In this article, we propose a fractional epidemic model of coronavirus (COVID-19) with vaccination effects. An arbitrary order model of COVID-19 is analyzed through three different fractional operators namely, Caputo, Atangana-Baleanu-Caputo (ABC), and Caputo-Fabrizio (CF), respectively. The fractional dynamics are composed of the interaction among the human population and the external environmental factors of infected peoples. It gives an extra description of the situation of the epidemic. Both the classical and modern approaches have been tested for the proposed model. The qualitative analysis has been checked through the Banach fixed point theory in the sense of a fractional operator. The stability concept of Hyers-Ulam idea is derived. The Newton interpolation scheme is applied for numerical solutions and by assigning values to different parameters. The numerical works in this research verified the analytical results. Finally, some important conclusions are drawn that might provide further basis for in-depth studies of such epidemics.

Abstract:Pandemic is an unprecedented public health situation, especially for human beings with comorbidity. Vaccination and non-pharmaceutical interventions only remain extensive measures carrying a significant socioeconomic impact to defeating pandemic. Here, we formulate a mathematical model with comorbidity to study the transmission dynamics as well as an optimal control-based framework to diminish COVID-19. This encompasses modeling the dynamics of invaded population, parameter estimation of the model, study of qualitative dynamics, and optimal control problem for non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) and vaccination events such that the cost of the combined measure is minimized. The investigation reveals that disease persists with the increase in exposed individuals having comorbidity in society. The extensive computational efforts show that mean fluctuations in the force of infection increase with corresponding entropy. This is a piece of evidence that the outbreak has reached a significant portion of the population. However, optimal control strategies with combined measures provide an assurance of effectively protecting our population from COVID-19 by minimizing social and economic costs.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a continuous mathematical model that describes the spread of multistrains COVID-19 virus among humans: susceptible, exposed, infected, quarantined, hospitalized, and recovered individuals. The positivity and boundedness of the system solution are provided in order to get the well posedness of the proposed model. Secondly, three controls are considered in our model to minimize the multistrain spread of the disease, namely, vaccination, security campaigns, social distancing measures, and diagnosis. Furthermore, the optimal control problem and related optimality conditions of the Pontryagin type are discussed with the objective to minimize the number of infected individuals. Finally, numerical simulations are performed in the case of two strains of COVID-19 and with four control strategies. By using the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) method, we show that combining vaccination with diagnosis provides the most cost-effective strategy.

Abstract:A pandemic is an epidemic spread over a huge geographical area. In this work, we frame a mathematical epidemic model taking inspiration from the classic SIR model and develop a compartmental model with ten compartments to study the coronavirus dynamics in India and three of its most affected states, namely, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, with inclusion of factors related to face mask efficacy, contact tracing, and testing along with quarantine and isolation. We fit the developed model and estimate optimum values of disease transmission rate, detection rate of undetected asymptomatic, and the same of undetected symptomatic. A sensitivity analysis is presented stressing on the importance of higher face mask usage, rapid testing, and contact tracing for curbing the disease spread. An optimal control analysis is performed with two control parameters to study the increase and decrease of the infected population with and without control. This study suggests that improved and rapid testing will help in identifying more infectives, thereby contributing in the decline of disease transmission rate. Optimal control analysis results on stressing on the importance of abiding by strict usage of face mask and social distancing for drastic decrease in number of infections. Time series behaviour of the symptomatic, asymptomatic, and hospitalized population is studied for a range of parameters, resulting in thorough understanding of significance of different parameters.

Abstract:Abstract When the novel coronavirus disease SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19) was officially declared a pandemic by the WHO in March 2020, the scientific community had already braced up in the effort of making sense of the fast-growing wealth of data gathered by national authorities all over the world. However, despite the diversity of novel theoretical approaches and the comprehensiveness of many widely established models, the official figures that recount the course of the outbreak still sketch a largely elusive and intimidating picture. Here we show unambiguously that the dynamics of the COVID-19 outbreak belongs to the simple universality class of the SIR model and extensions thereof. Our analysis naturally leads us to establish that there exists a fundamental limitation to any theoretical approach, namely the unpredictable non-stationarity of the testing frames behind the reported figures. However, we show how such bias can be quantified self-consistently and employed to mine useful and accurate information from the data. In particular, we describe how the time evolution of the reporting rates controls the occurrence of the apparent epidemic peak, which typically follows the true one in countries that were not vigorous enough in their testing at the onset of the outbreak. The importance of testing early and resolutely appears as a natural corollary of our analysis, as countries that tested massively at the start clearly had their true peak earlier and less deaths overall.

Abstract:The spread of COVID-19 has been thwarted in most countries through non-pharmaceutical interventions. In particular, the most effective measures in this direction have been the stay-at-home and closure strategies of businesses and schools. However, population-wide lockdowns are far from being optimal carrying heavy economic consequences. Therefore, there is nowadays a strong interest in designing more efficient restrictions. In this work, starting from a recent kinetic-type model which takes into account the heterogeneity described by the social contact of individuals, we analyze the effects of introducing an optimal control strategy into the system, to limit selectively the mean number of contacts and reduce consequently the number of infected cases. Thanks to a data-driven approach, we show that this new mathematical model permits to assess the effects of the social limitations. Finally, using the model introduced here and starting from the available data, we show the effectivity of the proposed selective measures to dampen the epidemic trends.

Abstract:Abstract Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), spreads rapidly and has attracted worldwide attention. Methods To improve forecast accuracy and investigate the spread of SARS-CoV-2, we constructed four mathematical models to investigate the numerical spread of SARS-CoV-2 and eradication pathways. Results Using the SEIR model, and including measures, such as city closure and holiday extension policy taken by the Chinese government which effectively reduced the β value, we estimated that the β value and basic transmission R0 of SARS-CoV-2 was 0·476 / 6·66 in Wuhan, 0·359 / 5·03 in Korea, 0·400 / 5·60 in Italy. Considering medicine and vaccines, an advanced model demonstrated that the emergence of vaccines can greatly alleviate the spread of the virus. Our model predicted that 100,000 people would become infected assuming the isolation rate alpha is 0·30 in Wuhan. If quarantine measures were taken from Mar 10, 2020 and the quarantine rate of alpha was also 0·3, the final number of infected people might be 11,426 in South Korea, and 147,142 in Italy. Conclusions Our mathematical models propose that SARS-CoV-2 eradication depends on systematic thinking, effective hospital isolation, and SARS-CoV-2 medicine and vaccination, and some measures including city closure and holiday policy should be taken for SARS-CoV-2 eradication.

Abstract:After the many failures in the control of the COVID-19 pandemic, identifying robust principles of epidemic control will be key in future preparedness. In this work, we propose an optimal control model of an age-of-infection transmission model under a two-phase control regime where social distancing is the only available control tool in the first phase, while the second phase also benefits from the arrival of vaccines. We analyzed the problem by an ad-hoc numerical algorithm under a strong hypothesis implying a high degree of prioritization to the protection of health from the epidemic attack, which we termed the "low attack rate" hypothesis. The outputs of the model were also compared with the data from the Italian COVID-19 experience to provide a crude assessment of the goodness of the enacted interventions prior to the onset of the Omicron variant.

Abstract:Objective. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of global publications on differential equations in mathematical modeling approaches for understanding and combating the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/Methodology/Approach. The study analyses a dataset of 964 documents from 353 sources from 2020 – 2023. Various parameters, such as publication growth rate, citation impact, collaboration patterns, document types, and distribution of citations, are examined. The analysis utilizes tables and figures to present the findings effectively. Results/Discussion. The analysis reveals a decline in publication output over the years, indicated by a negative annual growth rate. However, the dataset remains comprehensive and contributes valuable insights to the field. The publications have made significant contributions, evidenced by the average citations per document and the extensive reference list. Collaboration among authors is prevalent, with a substantial portion of co-authorships being international. The study identifies prominent papers with high citation counts, emphasizing their influence and recognition within the academic community. Conclusion. The findings highlight the need for continued research efforts and advancements in differential equations in mathematical modeling approaches for COVID-19. The study emphasizes the importance of maintaining a robust scientific impact and contributing effectively to the ongoing fight against the pandemic. It underscores the significance of collaboration and highlights countries and institutions with notable productivity and impact in the field. Originality/Value. Abstract:This paper deals with the mathematical modeling and numerical simulations related to the coronavirus dynamics. A description is developed based on the framework of susceptible-exposed-infectious-recovered model. Initially, a model verification is carried out calibrating system parameters with data from China, Italy, Iran and Brazil. Afterward, numerical simulations are performed to analyzed different scenarios of COVID-19 in Brazil. Results show the importance of governmental and individual actions to control the number and the period of the critical situations related to the pandemic.

Abstract:<p>We propose a mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in a homogeneously mixing non constant population, and generalize it to a model where the parameters are given by piecewise constant functions. This allows us to model the human behavior and the impact of public health policies on the dynamics of the curve of active infected individuals during a COVID-19 epidemic outbreak. After proving the existence and global asymptotic stability of the disease-free and endemic equilibrium points of the model with constant parameters, we consider a family of Cauchy problems, with piecewise constant parameters, and prove the existence of pseudo-oscillations between a neighborhood of the disease-free equilibrium and a neighborhood of the endemic equilibrium, in a biologically feasible region. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, this pseudo-periodic solutions are related to the emergence of epidemic waves. Then, to capture the impact of mobility in the dynamics of COVID-19 epidemics, we propose a complex network with six distinct regions based on COVID-19 real data from Portugal. We perform numerical simulations for the complex network model, where the objective is to determine a topology that minimizes the level of active infected individuals and the existence of topologies that are likely to worsen the level of infection. We claim that this methodology is a tool with enormous potential in the current pandemic context, and can be applied in the management of outbreaks (in regional terms) but also to manage the opening/closing of borders.</p>

Abstract:In late December 2019, a novel strand of Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) causing a severe, potentially fatal respiratory syndrome (COVID-19) was identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China and is causing outbreaks in multiple world countries, soon becoming a pandemic. Italy has now become the most hit country outside of Asia: on March 16, 2020, the Italian Civil Protection documented a total of 27980 confirmed cases and 2158 deaths of people tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. In the context of an emerging infectious disease outbreak, it is of paramount importance to predict the trend of the epidemic in order to plan an effective control strategy and to determine its impact. This paper proposes a new epidemic model that discriminates between infected individuals depending on whether they have been diagnosed and on the severity of their symptoms. The distinction between diagnosed and non-diagnosed is important because non-diagnosed individuals are more likely to spread the infection than diagnosed ones, since the latter are typically isolated, and can explain misperceptions of the case fatality rate and of the seriousness of the epidemic phenomenon. Being able to predict the amount of patients that will develop life-threatening symptoms is important since the disease frequently requires hospitalisation (and even Intensive Care Unit admission) and challenges the healthcare system capacity. We show how the basic reproduction number can be redefined in the new framework, thus capturing the potential for epidemic containment. Simulation results are compared with real data on the COVID-19 epidemic in Italy, to show the validity of the model and compare different possible predicted scenarios depending on the adopted countermeasures.

Abstract:The novel coronavirus is a recently discovered member of one of the largest families of viruses with symptoms ranging from a simple cold to excruciating respiratory agony. In the present paper, a deterministic mathematical model is formulated to estimate the transmission dynamics of COVID-19 with the inclusion of control strategies like (i) double-dose vaccination, (ii) prevention, and (iii) treatment. In addition, instead of considering all infectious humans as one unit, we separate them into symptomatic and asymptomatic groups, and the impact is analyzed. This separation is meaningful because various reports indicate that the asymptomatic cases will spread the disease more than the symptomatic cases. The model is proved to be mathematically well-posed and biologically meaningful by showing positivity and boundedness of the solution using the appropriate initial conditions. For the reproduction number, a parametric formula is constructed, and also the associated numerical value is calculated from the reported real data in Ethiopia. Moreover, disease-free and endemic equilibria are determined, and their local and global stabilities are discussed using the Lyapunov function technique. These equilibria are found to be locally asymptotically stable if R 0 < 1 and R 0 > 1 , respectively. Following the model fitting and estimation of the parameter values, sensitivity analysis was performed in order to analyze the impact of each parameter on transmission dynamics. In other words, this study can be used to evaluate how major model parameters affect transmission dynamics and control. Utilizing Pontryagin's maximal principle, the best control measures are implemented with the aim of lowering the burdens associated with infection, prevention, and treatment. To comprehend and visualize the impact of control techniques on the development of the disease and to illustrate the analytical findings generated in this study, numerical simulation studies are conducted. Finally, the output of the study illustrates that adhering to all the control strategies has a big impact on minimizing the transmission of the disease in society. Which means that if the control strategies are well managed by the concerned body, then the burden of the disease is reduced quickly in the Ethiopian population.

Abstract:The coronavirus infectious disease (COVID-19) is a novel respiratory disease reported in 2019 in China. The COVID-19 is one of the deadliest pandemics in history due to its high mortality rate in a short period. Many approaches have been adopted for disease minimization and eradication. In this paper, we studied the impact of various constant and time-dependent variable control measures coupled with vaccination on the dynamics of COVID-19. The optimal control theory is used to optimize the model and set an effective control intervention for the infection. Initially, we formulate the mathematical epidemic model for the COVID-19 without variable controls. The model basic mathematical assessment is presented. The nonlinear least-square procedure is utilized to parameterize the model from actual cases reported in Pakistan. A well-known technique based on statistical tools known as the Latin-hypercube sampling approach (LHS) coupled with the partial rank correlation coefficient (PRCC) is applied to present the model global sensitivity analysis. Based on global sensitivity analysis, the COVID-19 vaccine model is reformulated to obtain a control problem by introducing three time dependent control variables for isolation, vaccine efficacy and treatment enhancement represented by <math> <mrow> <msub><mrow><mi>u</mi></mrow> <mrow><mn>1</mn></mrow> </msub> <mrow><mo>(</mo> <mi>t</mi> <mo>)</mo></mrow> </mrow> </math> , <math> <mrow> <msub><mrow><mi>u</mi></mrow> <mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow> </msub> <mrow><mo>(</mo> <mi>t</mi> <mo>)</mo></mrow> </mrow> </math> and <math> <mrow> <msub><mrow><mi>u</mi></mrow> <mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow> </msub> <mrow><mo>(</mo> <mi>t</mi> <mo>)</mo></mrow> </mrow> </math> , respectively. The necessary optimality conditions of the control problem are derived via the optimal control theory. Finally, the simulation results are depicted with and without variable controls using the well-known Runge-Kutta numerical scheme. The simulation results revealed that time-dependent control measures play a vital role in disease eradication.

Abstract:<p>We propose a compartmental mathematical model for the spread of the COVID-19 disease with special focus on the transmissibility of super-spreaders individuals. We compute the basic reproduction number threshold, we study the local stability of the disease free equilibrium in terms of the basic reproduction number, and we investigate the sensitivity of the model with respect to the variation of each one of its parameters. Numerical simulations show the suitability of the proposed COVID-19 model for the outbreak that occurred in Wuhan, China.</p>
