Abstract:Despite significant reductions in fatal injuries in the mining industry, the number of accidents remains unacceptable. Ongoing concern persists regarding mine equipment. This study analyzes the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data from 241 final reports of fatal injuries in U.S. surface mines between 2008 and 2021. Predominantly, powered-haulage was the leading source of fatalities; novice miners were particularly vulnerable, and the most significant root cause group was ' Failure to follow safe work procedures and conditions while performing the task '. Results should heighten hazard awareness for industry professionals, helping them identify and prioritise safety issues in surface mining systems.

Abstract:In conventional blasting when explosive is detonated, it releases huge amount of effective and non-effective energies that can produce gas and shock accompanied by light, heat, sound and pressure. The effective energy can act as a useful tool in breaking rock for mining and construction purposes. However, the non-effective energy can cause disastrous effects and huge destruction to human lives and the surrounding environments. The most common safety concerns and undesirable side-effects include ground vibrations, flyrock, noise, premature explosion and air/dust pollution. However, they can be well-controlled with proper blast design using precise delay timing, direction of throw, distribution of explosives inside the blastholes and selection of explosives in close matching with the characteristics impedance of rock, etc. in order to meet safety and environmental needs at a minimum operating cost with optimum utilisation of rock deposits. It is established that explosive utilisation can be reduced using airdecks at strategic locations of the blastholes and 30% or even more effective cast ratio (ECR) is possible in specific cases of dragline and shovel-dumper faces. In case of clean coal extraction from a coal seam having thin partings of 0.5 to 1.2 m, segregation blasting has shown to be an effective tool wherein the concept of projectiles of the blasted materials depended on energy utilisation at different rock layers of varying densities. The method of induced blasting, may it be from surface or underground, has become a proven approach during depillaring operations in blasting gallery, longwall mining and mechanised mining with continuous miners. It needs perfect design and optimum consumption of explosives from safety standpoints. All these emerging technologies have arisen as a result of intense field experiments carried out by the global researchers. It is therefore felt necessary to give a brief account of such technologies to partially fulfil the commitments posed by the mining professionals for safe extraction of coal and minerals under constrained conditions.

Oral disodium cromoglycate in mastocytosis.

Abstract:Oral disodium cromoglycate was found useful for the treatment of gastrointestinal manifestations of mastocytosis in 2 patients with systemic disease. The urinary excretion of histamine in these 2 patients decreased following treatment. Oral disodium cromoglycate had no effect on cutaneous symptoms, either in these 2 patients nor in 2 other patients with urticaria pigmentosa without signs of systemic mastocytosis. In the latter 2 patients the urinary excretion of histamine was unaffected. Treatment was given for 4 to 6 weeks and the dose of disodium cromoglycate was 100 mg four times daily in the 3 adult patients and 100 mg three times daily in the fourth patient, an 8-year-old boy.
Pulmonary injury risk assessment for long-duration blasts: a meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Long-duration blasts are an increasing threat with the expanded use of thermobaric and other novel explosives. Other potential long-duration threats include large explosions from improvised explosive devices, weapons caches, and other explosives including nuclear explosives. However, there are very few long-duration pulmonary blast injury assessments, and use of short-duration exposure injury metrics is inappropriate as the injury mechanism for long-duration exposures is likely different from that of short-duration exposures. Methods: This study develops an injury model for long-duration (>10 milliseconds positive overpressure phase) blasts with sharp rising overpressures. For this study, data on more than 2,730 large animal experiments were collected from more than 55 experimental studies on blast. From this dataset, nearly 850 large animal experiments were selected with positive phase overpressure durations of 10 milliseconds or more. Various models were evaluated to determine the best fit of injury risk as a function of pressure and duration. A linear logistic regression was performed on the experimental data for threshold injury and lethality in terms of pressure and duration. The effects of mass, pressure, and duration scaling were all evaluated, and two goodness-of-fit indicators were used to assess the different models. Results and conclusions: New injury risk assessment curves were determined for both incident and reflected pressure conditions for reflecting surface and free-field exposures. Position dependent injury risk curves were also determined. The resulting curves are an improvement to existing assessments, because they use actual data to demonstrate theoretical assumptions on the injury risk.

Abstract:Although there is a wealth of information on the emission of gas and explosions due to methane-air and/or coal dust in mines underground, the underlying threats on the surface from the explosive energy transmitted through the mine entrances have been largely overlooked. These hazards have the potential to cause injuries and loss of life. Additionally, they can lead to severe damage to the surface infrastructure surrounding the mine entrance. This study aims to establish the relationship between characteristics of blast waves emanating from the mine entries for different magnitudes of explosions and radial distances. An Advanced Blast Simulator (shock tube) was used to experimentally study the propagation of blast waves from mine entrances and over an outside mine site terrain (for mine portals) or upwards towards the sky (for mine shafts). Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling was utilised to interpret the experimental data, verify the applicability and scalability of the small-scale experimental data for actual (large) scale problems, and provide more data points for the creation of blast overpressure contours with enhanced resolution. The paper concludes with several worked examples with detailed steps and commentary for characterising explosion risk around entrances of coal mines using the results derived from the present study.

Abstract:The mining industry plays an essential role in the Indian economy. Every mining operation is normally allied with numerous hazardous aspects and high-risk phenomena. Extensive mechanizations in rock excavation practices for achieving high production levels have generated a number of new kinds of hazards with the potential for catastrophic events. Therefore, to inculcate the culture of Zero Accident Potential, safety measures have to be undertaken at the earliest. In this paper, an attempt has been made for determining the accident/injury proneness of underground hard rock mine workers through Classification Based Analysis (CBA) and considering Standardized Injury Rate (SIR) as the key indicator. SIR has been analyzed based on the injury experience data (from 2006 to 2019) obtained from the mines under study and by taking individual-level and workplace-level variables into account. The case study results depicted that different age groups, experience groups, the locations of working, various working trades, and different mine work environments have noteworthy distinctions in their accident susceptibility. It is concluded based on the Classification Based Analysis (CBA) and SIR that the Casual and Contractual employees [OCCU5] have the highest vulnerability level towards accidents/injuries within the all considered occupation classes. Among the three experience groups, the group with moderate experience [EXP1 (11–20)] is found more prone to accidents. The analysis also depicts that the workers belonging to AGE1 (31–40), working at haulage [LOC0] and Mine1 are leading in accident/injury susceptibility scenarios with respect to other groups in their respective classification sets. Therefore, mine managements of these mines under case study should review their work distribution plans and assign the task considering the injury proneness of different classes of workers. Mine management has to recognize appropriate tasks for the individuals according to their inclusiveness in particular risk-prone group to inculcate risk-based task management system.

Abstract:Background: The widespread use of explosives by modern insurgents and terrorists has increased the potential frequency of blast exposure in soldiers and civilians. This growing threat highlights the importance of understanding and evaluating blast injury risk and the increase of injury risk from exposure to repeated blast effects. Methods: Data from more than 3,250 large animal experiments were collected from studies focusing on the effects of blast exposure. The current study uses 2,349 experiments from the data collection for analysis of the primary blast injury and survival risk for both long- and short-duration blasts, including the effects from repeated exposures. A piecewise linear logistic regression was performed on the data to develop survival and injury risk assessment curves. Results: New injury risk assessment curves uniting long- and short-duration blasts were developed for incident and reflected pressure measures and were used to evaluate the risk of injury based on blast overpressure, positive-phase duration, and the number of repeated exposures. The risk assessments were derived for three levels of injury severity: nonauditory, pulmonary, and fatality. The analysis showed a marked initial decrease in injury tolerance with each subsequent blast exposure. This effect decreases with increasing number of blast exposures. Conclusions: The new injury risk functions showed good agreement with the existing experimental data and provided a simplified model for primary blast injury risk. This model can be used to predict blast injury or fatality risk for single exposure and repeated exposure cases and has application in modern combat scenarios or in setting occupational health limits.

Abstract:Mining operations in close proximity to dwellings and sensitive structures present challenges in terms of mitigating the undesirable effects of blasting while maintaining productivity and ensuring the safety of surrounding communities. This paper explores the application of advanced blasting techniques, including the use of electronic detonators and the splitting of total explosive charges, to address these challenges. A series of experimental blasts were conducted, comparing blasts conducted with and without splitting of holes, to assess the impact on ground vibrations. The results demonstrated significant reductions in vibration magnitudes when implementing controlled blasting practices with splitting techniques. The findings highlight the importance of total explosive charge in determining ground vibration magnitudes within the danger zone of mine workings. The use of electronic detonators provided precise control over blast sequencing, contributing to safer and more efficient mining practices. These advanced blasting methods offer a practical and innovative solution for conducting safe mining operations near dwellings and sensitive structures, ensuring compliance with safety regulations while sustaining productivity.

Abstract:Flyrock is unwanted throw of rock fragments during bench blasting in mines and civil constructions. Perfunctory attempts by researchers to predict the flyrock range using mathematical, empirical and ANN based models do not address the issue in totality. Thus, flyrock continues to haunt the blaster. The research on the subject is, thus, still in its infancy. This paper identifies the lacunae, through a comprehensive review of the existing models, and suggests measures for better prediction and understanding of the problem on a holistic plane. One of the main reasons for improper predictions is the lack of data on flyrock in comparison to blast vibrations owing to statutory restrictions, avoidance of reporting and consequent constraints on experimentation. While fragmentation and throw of rock accompanied by subsequent vibration and air overpressure are essential constituents of the blasting, flyrock is not. This probably is one of the main errors in predictive domains. In addition, rock mass properties play a major role in heaving of rock fragments during blasting. Barring density of the rock, other rock mass properties have practically been ignored in all the models. At the end of this paper, for future investigations, a methodology for prediction of flyrock is also given.

Abstract:In the past few years, many countries have suffered severely from the attacks in form of blasts and other terrorist activities. These attacks have caused a major loss to infrastructure, human lives as well as economic losses. When the explosive occurs intentionally, it is called blast and if the explosive explodes accidentally then it an explosion. In India, the blast resistant design of structures is categorized as explosion above ground, IS 4991 (Indian standard criteria for blast resistant design of structures for explosions above ground, New Delhi, India, 1969) and underground blasts, IS 6922 (Indian Standard criteria for safety and design of structures subject to underground blast, New Delhi, India, 1973). In addition, different international codes and regulations namely NATO (Department of Defense in Structures to resist the effects of accidental explosions, UFC 3-340-02, DC, United States of America, Washington, 2008), FEMA (NATO in Manual of NATO safety principles for the storage of NATO ammunition and explosives, AC/258-D/258, Bonn, Germany, 1993) and DOD (FEMA 428 in Primer to design safe school projects in case of terrorist attacks, Federal Emergency Management Agency, United States of America, 2003) provide guidelines to mitigate blast induced effects on structures. A brief sketch on the development of blast pressure time history generated from detonation of manmade explosions is discussed. Factors affecting the intensity of blast load and its effects on various structural components both experimentally and analytically are also summarized. Theoretical and empirical approaches proposed by various researchers for the prediction of realistic blast load are also studied. The review also includes blast mitigation strategies proposed by various investigations for an improved structural performance against blast. The studies presented in the literature review are broadly categorized under two sections namely studies on air and surface blast loading and studies on underground mine blast loading.

The primary aim of this study is to provide an in-depth overview of the latest developments in the field of mining accident prediction. This comprehensive overview spans various methodologies, encompassing time series analysis methods, statistical approaches, data science techniques, machine learning, and deep learning algorithms. Additionally, this article presents a comprehensive analysis and examination of the primary data sources commonly used to predict mining accidents. In order to analyze the material thoroughly, this paper outlines and compares the many algorithms employed to predict mining accidents. The analysis comprises an exhaustive compilation of various algorithms and a comparative evaluation. Moreover, the appropriateness of their suitability is assessed based on the characteristics of the data under analysis. The acquired outcomes and the simplicity of their interpretation and analysis are likewise subject to scrutiny. The authors have stated that the most favorable outcomes are achieved by combining two or more analytic procedures, resulting in an enhanced examination of the given results. Among the upcoming problems in mining, forecasting is expanding the scope of the proposed models and forecasts by incorporating heterogeneous data sources such as geographical data, videos, audio recordings, textual content, sentiment, and emotional intelligence.

Abstract:Blasting is a major method of excavation in mining, civil construction and infrastructure projects. The integrity of the rockmass of the final wall after excavation is important for the stability and economics of the operation. Perimeter blasting achieves a planned surface of the rockmass. The pre-split is one such technique, deployed when there is no free face and, thus, involving several interactions of rockmass properties, including strength, joint spacing and joint orientation, with respect to blastholes, blast design, explosive configuration, blasthole deviations and other variables. The mechanism and models of the pre-split are perfunctory, particularly in defining interactions of pre-splitting variables. The basis of pre-splitting vis-à-vis dominant variables affecting performance is, accordingly, discussed here. Since the half cast factor, generally used for damage assessment, has its limitations, the index of blast damage has been compared while modelling performance. Models using response surface analysis for pre-splitting, for both blast damage index and half cast factor, were developed using historical data. The angle of the blasthole with respect to the major joint orientation, spacing of the joints, blasthole spacing, drill deviation, linear charge concentration and compressive strength has been used to compare the above-mentioned damage criteria. Blast damage index has been found to be a better predictor for determining rockmass damage due to blasting. The desirability of the variables deployed has been determined using optimization procedures. A fresh impetus to pre-split studies is expected to provide a ground for future research, particularly studies using advanced computational and numerical algorithms.

Abstract:Abstract Coal seam in mines sometimes catches fire due to its property of spontaneous heating. Drilling and blasting techniques are the most economical operation for the removal of overburden and extraction of coal in an open-pit coal mine. Blasting in a fiery seam is one the most dangerous and risky operations and various environmental and technical problems are associated with it. While blasting in a fiery coal seam, it is essential to use the minimum amount of explosive in a hole and the blast should be taken quickly. As the amount of explosive to be used must be comparatively lesser; therefore, it becomes important to perform the blasting in a manner to maximize the utilization of explosive energy. Improper utilization of energy causes back break, which is one of the technical concerns for management due to the in-stability of high wall. This study is a unique attempt to predict back break, especially in fiery coal seam through the experimental blasts and their analysis by Multivariate Regression Analysis (MVRA), and Random Forest algorithm (RFA). Total 26 blasting were conducted at open pit mine. To obtain the most optimum blast design parameter, blast design parameters were varied. The observed back break during trial blasts varies from 1.4 to 10 m. The Sensitivity analysis performed with the collected data and it has been found that stiffness ratio and stemming length are the most influential parameters on generation of back break. The MVRA and RFA analysis have been adopted for accurate prediction of back break. The results show that the RFA analysis predicts the backbreak and achieved the RMSE of ± 0.59 m while in MVRA, RMSE achieved was ± 0.99 m, making RFA more suitable method to be used for backbreak prediction in fiery seam blasting.

Abstract:Flyrock is considered as one of the main causes of human injury, fatalities, and structural damage among all undesirable environmental impacts of blasting. Therefore, it seems that the proper prediction/simulation of flyrock is essential, especially in order to determine blast safety area. If proper control measures are taken, then the flyrock distance can be controlled, and, in return, the risk of damage can be reduced or eliminated. The first objective of this study was to develop a predictive model for flyrock estimation based on multiple regression (MR) analyses, and after that, using the developed MR model, flyrock phenomenon was simulated by the Monte Carlo (MC) approach. In order to achieve objectives of this study, 62 blasting operations were investigated in Ulu Tiram quarry, Malaysia, and some controllable and uncontrollable factors were carefully recorded/calculated. The obtained results of MC modeling indicated that this approach is capable of simulating flyrock ranges with a good level of accuracy. The mean of simulated flyrock by MC was obtained as 236.3 m, while this value was achieved as 238.6 m for the measured one. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was also conducted to investigate the effects of model inputs on the output of the system. The analysis demonstrated that powder factor is the most influential parameter on fly rock among all model inputs. It is noticeable that the proposed MR and MC models should be utilized only in the studied area and the direct use of them in the other conditions is not recommended.

Abstract:One of the major problems associated with exploitation of the copper ore deposit in underground mines in Poland is the local disturbance in a state of stable equilibrium manifested in a sudden release of strain energy stored in the deformed rock mass. It occurs mainly in the form of dynamic events which may result in rockbursts and roof falls. In order to face this threats, a number of organisational and technical prevention methods are applied in mines. It should be also noted that the greatest difficulties with the roof control are observed in the vicinity of active mining fronts, where the highest deformations are observed. The detonation of explosives generates a propagating shock wave which may cause a serious damage to a material body that is encountered on its way. Thus, a number of doubts during the mining operation emerged, that simultaneous firing of group of mining faces may have the negative impact on the condition of applied roof support and condition of roof strata as well The article discusses geomechanical influence of multi-faces blasting on immediate roof strata condition through the mutual comparison of the instrumented bolts monitoring data and the computer simulations results. The numerically assessed stress/strain field in the near vicinity of the blasting works operation has proved to be in close agreement with the field measured data. In the considered mining conditions both the numerical approach and field strain/stress monitoring indicated the low effect of production blasting on the immediate roof fall potential.

Abstract:Flyrock is one of the most important environmental issues in mine blasting, which can affect equipment, people and could cause fatal accidents. Therefore, minimization of this environmental issue of blasting must be considered as the ultimate objective of many rock removal projects. This paper describes a new minimization procedure of flyrock using intelligent approaches, i.e., artificial neural network (ANN) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms. The most effective factors of flyrock were used as model inputs while the output of the system was set as flyrock distance. In the initial stage, an ANN model was constructed and proposed with high degree of accuracy. Then, two different strategies according to ideal and engineering condition designs were considered and implemented using PSO algorithm. The two main parameters of PSO algorithm for optimal design were obtained as 50 for number of particle and 1000 for number of iteration. Flyrock values were reduced in ideal condition to 34 m; while in engineering condition, this value was reduced to 109 m. In addition, an appropriate blasting pattern was proposed. It can be concluded that using the proposed techniques and patterns, flyrock risks in the studied mine can be significantly minimized and controlled.

Abstract:The article addresses the issues of ensuring safe operation of mining equipment in surface mining. It describes the main factors and situations that pose a high risk to human life and health. The most dangerous incidents are shown to be related to limited visibility and blind spots for operators of mining equipment, which can result in collisions and personnel run over. The main technologies and specific solutions used to design collision avoidance systems are described and their general comparison is provided. A particular focus is placed on monitoring the health of employees at their workplace by means of portable personal devices that promptly inform the dispatcher of emergency situations. General technical requirements are formulated for designing of the system to prevent equipment collisions and personnel run over in surface mining operations. The paper emphasizes the importance of introducing a multifunctional safety system in surface mines in order to minimise the possibility of incidents and accidents throughout the entire production cycle.

Abstract:Background: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are problematic in many industries, including stone, sand, and gravel mining (SSGM). This research aimed to delineate MSD risk factors and to identify protective safety resources that reduce MSD within these operations. Methods: A deductive content analysis of recorded transcripts from a focus group, which included professionals working in SSGM organizations, was completed. Findings: Results suggested demographic and personal factors associated with MSD included age, lack of experience, low levels of physical fitness, and attitudes toward risks. Work factors and job demands included excessive lifting, performing additional job duties, production-focused operations, lack of resources, and work related to maintenance and equipment operation. Suggested safety resources included a focus on worker fitness, resource adequacy, pay and benefits, the SLAM (Stop, Look, Analyze, and Manage) process and positive safety culture. Conclusion: This qualitative research project utilized mine experts to identify demographic, personal, work, and job demand factors they perceive or know to be associated with MSD. Safety programs suggested by these same experts to reduce MSD were also presented. Application to Practice: Occupational health and safety practitioners and mine administrators should focus on the identified factors in their work to prevent MSD within SSGM operations. Safety efforts need to include integrated programs that promote health and fitness as well. These efforts should be implemented along with recommended programs such as SLAM and the provision of appropriate safety resources to minimize risks. These efforts should promote the importance of safety and will help with bolstering a positive safety culture.

Abstract:The generally accepted view in rock blasting is that the sources of energy for the fracture and movement of rock reside in the shock wave and gas action resulting from the explosion, and yet the mechanisms by which these sources interact with the rock have remained unclarified. It has also been noted that up to 50% of the work capacity of an explosive released in a blast cannot be accounted for by field measurements of energy partitioning. In this study, we describe a physical model that details the response of rock to both shock wave and gas action. An analytical model based on momentum conservation is derived to describe the dynamics of shock-driven expansion of the blasthole. Radial expansion of the hole is the key parameter that permits the derivation of the following characteristics of rock response to shock loads: hole expansion time; volume of displaced rock; energy consumed per unit volume; expansion energy efficiency; stress wave pulse length; gas pressure in enlarged hole. Soon after the completion of hole expansion, the shock wave degenerates to an elastic stress wave that runs through the burden. Blasthole expansions of between 50% and 300% of diameter are completed in under 1 ms and, depending on rock properties, consume 32% to 42% of the detonation energy or about 55% of the available mechanical (Gurney) energy. Gas pressure in the enlarged holes in five rock types is between 35 MPa and 650 MPa, and drives the mass movement of burden rock.
