PLANT FACTORY
Abstract:Plant factories (PFs) utilize sole-source lighting (SSL) for indoor crop production. SSL is the technical factor most limiting development of the PF industry. In the past 10years, light-emitting diode (LED) technology has developed sufficiently to be adopted for commercial use. The capability for LEDs to control spectral photon emissions opens exciting possibilities to manipulate crop photosynthesis and photomorphogenesis that never existed previously. The history of LED use for crop production is reviewed, including the roles of different wavebands in controlling plant responses, and how research is guiding development of next-generation LED fixtures with enhanced capabilities to control crop production with enhanced quality attributes. Although LEDs have enabled a rapid expansion of knowledge in plant photobiology and subsequent advances in applications for developing lighting and growth recipes for PF crops, many questions remain to be addressed and more investigations to be conducted leveraging the unique properties of LEDs for plant growth.
