Abstract:Two scandium coordination polymers, a 2D supermolecule structure {[Sc(OH)(L-1)(2)(H2O)]}(n) (1) (HL1 = isonicotinic acid), a 1D infinite chain structure {[Sc-3(L-2)(4)(H2O)(4)]NO3H2O}(n) (2) (H2L2 = 4,5-imidazole dicarboxylic acid), as well as a scandium complex {[Sc-2(OH)(2)(L-3)(2)(H2O)(4)]}(n) (3) (H2L3 = 1,2,3-triazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid), were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Compounds 1-3 are active heterogeneous catalysts for high-yield cyanosilylation of aromatic aldehydes in acetonitrile, particularly for p-nitrobenzaldehyde. Moreover, these three catalysts can be reused three times without significant loss in activity or mass.
Diversified Two-Electron Reduction for Trivalent Scandium Complexes with Arene Ligands

Abstract:Reduced arene complexes of rare-earth metals are of great interest and importance because of their unique reactivity mimicking low-valent rare-earth metal species. Here, we present the synthesis and structural characterization of a series of reduced naphthalene or anthracene complexes of mononuclear scandium with the mixed C5Me5 (Cp*) and amidinate ligands. Among them, the reduced anthracene complexes of mononuclear scandium have been found for the first time to undergo rapid inter-ring rearrangement. Significantly, a reduced anthracene complex with scandium center attached to the terminal six-membered ring of anthracene was synthesized by modulating the substituents on amidinate ligand. The diversified two-electron redox reactions of the reduced naphthalene complex of mononuclear scandium toward cyclooctatetraene (COT), dibenzo[a,e]cyclooctene, benzophenone, 1,4-diazabutadiene (DAD), isothiocyanate, and selenium were examined. The scope of two-electron redox reaction via the trivalent scandium complex with the mixed Cp*/amidinate/arene ligand system is significantly expanded, thus these results remedy the shortcomings that rare-earth complexes are difficult to undergo the two-electron redox process.

Abstract:Although transition metallacyclopropenes have been extensively explored for more than 40 years, their analogues of rare-earth metals have remained elusive. Herein, we report the synthesis of three isolable scandacyclopropenes, thus representing the first well-defined rare-earth metallacyclopropenes. Structural characterization and DFT calculations revealed a delocalized three-center two-electron (3c-2e) aromatic system. When scandacyclopropenes were treated with phenylacetylene or TMSN3, the scandium complex of bis-phenylacetylide or bis-azide was obtained, respectively. The reaction of scandacyclopropene with phenazine could provide the binuclear ring-opening scandium complex via 1,4-insertion of phenazine into one Sc-C bond and subsequent metathesis reaction. However, insertion of TMSNCO or N2O into one Sc-C bond of scandacyclopropenes gave a five- or six-membered scandacycle. In addition, scandacyclopropenes can serve as a two-electron reductive agent for PhSSPh and PhNNPh. These results show that scandacyclopropenes exhibit diversified and unique reactivity toward small molecules because of the strongly nucleophilic alkenediyl dianion and highly strained three-membered ring.

Abstract:A family of tetra-, penta-, and hexacoordinate nickel complexes of functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been prepared via carbene transfer reactions of Ni(PPh3)2Cl2 and silver-NHC complexes in situ generated from corresponding imidazolium salts and Ag2O. These nickel(II) complexes have been characterized by 1H NMR, 13CNMR, and ESI spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Structural analysis revealed that [Ni(L1)3](PF6)2 (L1 = 3-butyl-1-(5,7-dimethyl-1,8-naphthyridin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 3) is a rare example of a nickel complex with trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. [Ni(L4)2](PF6)2 (L4 = 1-butyl-3-((7-methyl-1,8-naphthyridin-2-yl)methyl)imidazolylidene, 5) and [Ni(L20)2](PF6)2 (L20 = 3-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 21) are normal square-planar. [Ni(L8)3](PF6)2 (L8 = 3-methyl-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 9), [Ni(L10)2(CH3CN)](PF6)2 (L10 = 3-ethyl-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazol-ylidene, 11), [Ni(L12)2(CH3CN)](PF6)2 (L12 = 3-butyl-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 13), [Ni(L14)2(CH3CN)](PF6)2 (L14 = 3-benzyl-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 15), and [Ni(L16)2(CH3CN)](PF6)2 (L16 = 3-isopropyl-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 17) are pentacoordinate, displaying unusual square-pyramidal geometry. [Ni(L12)3](PF6)2 (L9 = 3-butyl-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylid-ene, 19), [Ni(L22)2(CH3CN)2](PF6)2 (L22 = 3-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 23), and [Ni(L24)(CH3CN)(H2O)] (L22 = 3-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 25) are octahedral complexes. The structural diversity of these nickel(II) complexes originating from steric pressure of the ligands is discussed.
Organometallic Nickel Complexes Supported by Pyridinophane Ligands and Their Oxidative Reactivity

Abstract:The pyridinophane ligands RN3CX (X = H, Br) are well-established scaffolds that facilitat and stabilize nickel oxidative addition complexes to the proximal C(aryl)–X bond. In this study, we report the synthesis, detailed characterization, and reactivity of a series of Ni(II) and Ni(III) complexes supported by the MeN3CX ligand. Our findings demonstrate that Ni(II) complexes can be oxidized both chemically and aerobically to yield well-defined Ni(III) species. Excitingly, the Ni-disolvento complexes exhibit catalytic trifluoroethoxylation to generate the C–O coupled product. In addition, the Ni(III)-halide complex undergoes transmetallation with a Grignard reagent and subsequent C–C reductive elimination, while the β-hydride elimination side reaction is suppressed, outperforming its Ni(II) analogue.

Abstract:Magnetic studies on nine new octanuclear cyclic heterotrimetallic complexes reveal that in comparison with analogous octanuclear complexes [Ni4Dy2M2] (M3+ = Fe, W and Co), the [Ni4Dy2Cr2] species show the highest energy barrier and the [Ni4Tb2M2] (M = Cr or Fe) complexes display single-molecule magnetic properties.
Scandium, titanium and vanadium complexes supported by PCP-type pincer ligands: synthesis, structure, and styrene polymerization activity

Abstract:A series of first-row early transition metal dialkyl complexes bearing pincer ligands [(POCOP)M(CH2SiMe3)2] (POCOP: (2,6-(tBu2PO)2-C6H3); 1-Sc: M = Sc; 1-Ti: M = Ti; 1-V: M = V) and [(PCP)M(CH2SiMe3)2] (PCP: (2,6-(tBu2PCH2)2-C6H3); 2-Sc: M = Sc; 2-Ti: M = Ti) have been synthesized. These dialkyl complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR spectroscopy, and solution magnetic susceptibility (Evans method) analyses appropriately. All the complexes exhibited square pyramidal geometries with different extents of distortion. The activities of these complexes were further explored in styrene polymerization, in which combinations of scandium complexes (1-Sc or 2-Sc) with [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] were found to be active catalytic systems for highly syndiospecific (>99% rrrr) polymerization of styrene. Meanwhile, the Ti(III) complexes 1-Ti and 2-Ti showed rather low activity in styrene polymerization, which stands in sharp contrast to those in previous reports involving Ti(III) catalysts bearing cyclopentadienyl derivative ligands.

Abstract:ConspectusLow-valent, low-coordinate 3d metal complexes represent a class of extraordinarily reactive compounds that can act as reagents and catalysts for challenging bond-activation reactions. The pursuit of these electron-deficient metal complexes in low oxidation states demands ancillary ligands capable of providing not only energetic stabilization but also sufficiently high steric bulk at the metal center. From this perspective, pincer ligands are particularly advantageous, as their prearranged, meridional coordination mode scaffolds the active center while the substituents of the peripheral donor atoms provide effective steric shielding for the coordination sphere. In a T-shaped geometry, the transition metal complexes possess a precisely defined vacant coordination site, which, combined with the often observed high-spin electron configuration, exhibits unusually high selectivity of these compounds with respect to one-electron redox chemistry. In light of the intractable reaction pathways typically observed with related electronically unsaturated 3d transition metal complexes, the pincer coordination mode enables the isolation of low-valent compounds with more controlled and unique reactivity. We have thus investigated a series of T-shaped metal(I) complexes using three different types of pincer ligands, which may be regarded as "metalloradicals" due to their selectively exposed unpaired electrons.These compounds display remarkably high thermal stability and represent rarely observed "naked" monovalent metal species featuring both monomeric and dimeric structures. Extensive reactivity studies using various organic substrates highlight a strong tendency of these paramagnetic compounds to undergo one-electron oxidation, leading to the isolation of a plethora of metal(II) species with reduced organic ligands as unusual structural elements. The exploration of C2 symmetric T-shaped Ni(I) complexes as asymmetric catalysts also shows success in enantioselective hydrodehalogenation of geminal dihalogenides. In addition, this specific class of low-valent, low-coordinate complexes can be further diversified by introducing redox-active pincer ligands or building homobimetallic systems with two T-shaped units.This Account focuses on the discussion of selected examples of iron, cobalt, and nickel pincer complexes bearing a [P,N,P] or [N,N,N] donor set; however, their electronic structure and radical-type reactivity can be broadly extended to other pincer systems. The availability of various types of pincer ligands should allow fine-tuning of the reactivity of the T-shaped complexes. Given the unprecedented reactivity observed with these compounds, we expect the studies of T-shaped 3d metal complexes to be a fertile field for advancing base metal catalysis.

Interdependent Metal-Metal Bonding and Ligand Redox-Activity in a Series of Dinuclear Macrocyclic Complexes of Iron, Cobalt, and Nickel.

Abstract:This report describes an isostructural series of dinuclear iron, cobalt, and nickel complexes bound by a redox-active macrocyclic ligand. The series spans five redox levels (34-38 e-/cluster core), allowing for a detailed investigation into both the degree of metal-metal interaction and the extent of ligand-based redox-activity. Magnetometry, electrochemistry, UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, and crystallography were used in conjunction with DFT computational analyses to extract the electronic structures of the six homodinuclear complexes. The isoelectronic, 34 e- species [(3PDI2)Fe2(PMe3)2(μ-Cl)](OTf) and [(3PDI2)Co2(PMe3)2(μ-Cl)](OTf)3 exhibit metal-metal single bonds, with varying amounts of electron density delocalization into the ligand as a function of the effective nuclear charge of the metal ions. One- and two-electron reductions of [(3PDI2)Co2(PMe3)2(μ-Cl)](OTf)3 lead to isolable products, which show successive increases in both the Co-Co distances and the extent of reduction of the ligand manifold. This trend results from reduction of a Co-Co σ* orbital, which was found to be heavily mixed with the redox-active manifold of the 3PDI2 ligand. A similar trend was observed in the 37 and 38 e- dinickel complexes [(3PDI2)Ni2(PMe3)2(μ-Cl)](OTf)2 and [(3PDI2)Ni2(PMe3)2(μ-Cl)](OTf); however, their higher electron counts lead to high-spin ground states that result from occupation of a high-lying δ/δ* manifold with significant Ni-NPDI σ* character. This change in ground state configuration reforms a M-M bonding interaction in the 37 e- complex, but formation of the 38 e- species again disrupts the M-M bond alongside the transfer of electron density to the ligand.
Synthesis, Structural Characterization and NMR Studies of Group 10 Metal Complexes with Macrocyclic Amine N-heterocyclic Carbene Ligands

Abstract:A series of Ni(ii), Pd(ii) and Pt(ii) complexes [ML][PF6]2 [L = L1, M = Ni (1), Pd (2), Pt (3); L = L2, M = Ni (4), Pd (5), Pt (6)] and [Pt(L2)(acac)] (7) have been prepared by the reactions of two tetradentate macrocyclic amine-NHC ligand precursors, [H2L1][PF6]2 and [H2L2][PF6]2, with Ni(OAc)2·4H2O, Pd(OAc)2 and Pt(acac)2 in the presence of NaOAc. Complex 7 is isolated along with 6 from the same reaction between [H2L2][PF6]2 and Pt(acac)2. There are two atropisomers in 1-3 and two achiral conformers in 4-6. The crystal structures of 1-3 and one conformer of 4-6 (4a-6a) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The metal ion is found to reside in the cavity of the macrocyclic ring and adopts a square-planar configuration. Detailed NMR studies including variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy reveal a dynamic interconverting process between two atropisomers of 1-3 in the solutions via a ring twisting mechanism. Two conformers in the equilibrated solution of 4-6, probably arising from the orientation of two amine N-H bonds with respect to the coordination plane, exchange slowly. Time-dependent 1H NMR spectra show that one conformer (4a-6a) in solution converts into the other (4b-6b) via the inversion of the nitrogen atom.
Cationic Scandium Allyl Complexes Bearing Mono(Cyclopentadienyl) Ligands: Synthesis, Novel Structural Variety, and Olefin-Polymerization Catalysis

Abstract:The one-pot salt-metathesis reaction of ScCl3, cyclopentadienyl lithium salts, and allylmagnesium chlorides afforded with ease the corresponding base-free half-sandwich scandium di-(eta(3)-allyl) complexes [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc- (C3H5)(2)] (1a), [(C5Me5)Sc(C3H5)(2)] (1b), and [(C5Me5)Sc(2-MeC3H4)(2)] (1c) in high yields. Reaction of 1a with 1 equivalent of [PhNMe2H][B(C6F5)(4)] in toluene gave rapidly the N,N-dimethylaniline-coordinated cationic mono-(eta(3)-allyl) complex [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc-(eta(3)-C3H5)(eta(6)-PhNMe2)][B(C6F5)(4)] (2). The similar reaction of 1a with [Ph3C][B-(C6F5)(4)] yielded the analogous toluene-separated ion pair [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc(eta(3)-C3H5)(eta(6)-PhMe)][B(C6F5)(4)] (3). When [PhNMe2H][BPh4] was treated with 1a, the contact ion pair [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc- (eta(3)-C3H5)( mu, eta(6)-Ph)BPh3] (4) was obtained. Recrystallization of 2, 3, and 4 in THF yielded the corresponding thf-separated ion pair complexes [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc(eta(3)-C3H5)(thf)(2)][B-(C6F5)(4)] (5) and [(C5Me4SiMe3)SC(eta(3)- C3H5)(thf)(2)][BPh4] (6). The N,N-dimethylaniline-coordinated cationic scandium allyl complex 2 and the toluene-coordinated analogue 3 showed high activity (activity: 3 > 2) toward the polymerization and copolymerization of isoprene and norbornene to afford random copolymers with a broad range of isoprene content (33-86 mol %). The tight ion pair 4 and the thf-coordinated complexes 5 and 6 showed no activity under the same conditions. These results offer unprecedented insight into the structure-activity relationship of a cationic metal polymerization-catalyst system.

Abstract:Mono- and polynuclear complexes containing 3-(1,10-phenanthrolin-2-yl)-1-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-imidazolylidene (L), [NiL2](PF6)(2) (2), [CoL2](PF6)(3) (3), [PtLCl](PF6) (4), [PdAgL2](PF6)(3) (5), [PdCuL2](PF6)(3) (6), [Pd2L2Cl2](PF6)(2) (7), and [Pd3L2Cl4](PF6)(2) (8)have been prepared and fully characterized by NMR, ESI-MS spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. In complexes 2-4, the ligand binds to metals in a pincer NNC fashion with the pyridine group uncoordinated. Complexes 5 and 6 are isostructural to each other in which the palladium ions are surrounded by two pyridines and two imidazolylidenes and Ag(I)or Cu(I)is coordinated by two 1,10-phenanthroline moieties. In the trinuclear palladium complex 8, one palladium ion has an identical coordination mode as in 5 and 6, and the other two palladium ions are bonded to the 1,10-phenanthroline. Complex 6 exhibits excellent catalytic activity for the tandem click/Sonogashira reaction of 1-(bromomethyl)-4-iodobenzene, NaN3, and ethynylbenzene in which three C-N bonds and one C-C bond are formed in a single flask.
Synthesis and Electrochemical Studies of Nickel Complexes with a Flexidentate Bipyridine-aza-crown Ether Ligand

Abstract:Bipyridine ligands have been extensively employed in nickel catalysis, with ligand modifications focused on steric or electronic tuning. In this work, we explore modifications designed to modulate the coordination mode using a 2,2'-bipyridine derivative with an appended aza-crown ether macrocycle capable of flexidentate binding to nickel. A series of complexes varying in charge from neutral to dicationic demonstrates the flexibility of the macrocycle, with bipyridine-aza-crown ether denticity changing from к4 to к6 upon sequential abstraction of chloride ligands. The changes in binding mode can be reversed by addition of chloride ion. Comparisons between the macrocycle-containing ligand and an analogous ligand with a non-macrocyclic diethylamine donor provide insight into the role of the crown ether, including in electrochemical reductions probed via cyclic voltammetry.

Treatments of 3d metal dichlorides (CoCl2, NiCl2(DME), CuCl2) with the lithium salts of carboranylamidines (Cab(N)H) generate the mononuclear C,N-coordinated complexes [(RN=C(closo-1,2-C2B10H10)-(NHR)](2)M (1-6; M = Co, Ni, Cu; R = iPr, Cy) in moderate yields, respectively. These complexes have similar structures in the solid state, in which the metal atom is coordinated to two nitrogen atoms and bonded to two cage carbon atoms in a distorted-tetrahedral geometry. As a noninnocent ligand, Cab(N)H can be modified to produce carboranylamidinate thiol (Cab(N)SH) and nido derivatives Dcab(N)H (9, 10), respectively. Reaction of cupric acetate with 1 equiv of CabNSH gave the binuclear complexes {[RN=C(closo-1,2-C2B10H10)(NHR)]SCu}(2) (R = iPr (7), Cy (8)) in 66 and 63% yields, respectively. The structure of 7 shows the formation of a Cu-Cu bond, and the geometry of the Cu2S2 core is planar. The zwitterionic nickel dicarbollide complexes (Dcab(N))Ni(PPh3)Cl (11, 12) were prepared by reactions of the lithium salts of Dcab(N)H (9, 10) with NiCl2(PPh3)(2) in THF. All complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and IR and NMR spectroscopy. The structures of 1, 3-5, 7, and 9-11 were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:Based on previous work related to the design and application of rigid tridentate phosphine-pyridine-phenyl coordination offered by a PNC-pincer ligand upon cyclometalation to nickel, the synthesis, spectroscopic and solid state characterization and redox-reactivity of two NiII(PNC) complexes featuring either a methyl (2CH3 ) or CF3 co-ligand (2CF3 ) are described. One-electron oxidation is proposed to furnish C-C reductive elimination, as deduced from a combined chemical, electrochemical, spectroscopic and computational study. One-electron reduction results in a ligand-centered radical anion, as supported by electrochemistry, UV spectroelectrochemistry, EPR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. This further attenuates the breadth of chemical reactivity offered by such PNC-pincer ligands.

Abstract:Although there are few reduced dinitrogen complexes of scandium, this metal has revealed a new structural type in reductive dinitrogen chemistry by reduction of bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) scandium halides under N-2. Reduction of (Cp* = C5Me5) with potassium graphite (KC8) under dinitrogen generates the dark blue paramagnetic complex , 1. This end-on bridging (NN)(2-) complex is a diradical with a magnetic moment of 2.8 mu (B). Upon further reduction of 1 with KC8, the orange diamagnetic trimetallic complex , 2, is obtained. This complex has an unprecedented structure in which two side-on bridging (NN)(2-) ligands are bound to the central (Cp*Sc)(2+) moiety. Complex 2 can also be obtained directly from reduction of or a mixture of and with KC8. The reaction of with KC8 in the presence of 18-crown-6 or 2.2.2-cryptand affords 2 along with small amounts of , 3, which is green at room temperature and purple at low temperature and displays a mixture of side-on and end-on bridging isomers in the crystal structure collected at -180 degrees C. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are consistent with a triplet ground state for the end-on complex 1 and singlet ground states for the side-on complexes 2 and 3.

Abstract:A series of cyano-bridged Ni(II)-Cr(I/III) complexes have been synthesized by the reactions of hexaazacyclic Ni(II) complexes with [Cr(CN)(6)](3-) or [Cr(CN)(5)(NO)](3-). Using the tetravalent Ni(II) complex [Ni(H(2)L(2))](4+) (L(2) = 3,10-bis(2-aminoethyl)-1,3,6,8,10,12-hexaazacyclotetradecane), one-dimensional chainlike complexes were produced and subject to magnetic studies, affording the intermetallic magnetic exchange constants of J(1) = +0.23 cm(-1) and J(2) = +8.4 cm(-1) for the complex [Ni(H(2)L(2))][Cr(CN)(5)(NO)]ClO(4).5H(2)O (1) and of J = +5.9 cm(-1) for the complex [Ni(H(2)L(2))](4)[Cr(CN)(6)](5)OH.15H(2)O (2). X-ray diffraction analysis shows that complex 1 has a zigzag chain structure, whereas complex 2 consists of a branched chain structure. Complex 2 exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering at 8.0 K (T(N)). When an octahedral Ni(II) complex cis-[NiL(3)(en)](2+) (en = 1,2-ethylenediamine, L(3) = 3,10-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5,8,10,12-hexaazacyclotetradecane) was used for the synthesis, the common 2D honeycomb-layered complex [NiL(3)](3)[Cr(CN)(5)(NO)](2).8H(2)O (3) was obtained, which has a T(N) value of 3.3 K. Below T(N), a metamagnetic behavior was observed in complexes 2 and 3.
