Abstract:We present five X-ray quasars behind the Small Magellanic Cloud, increasing the number of known quasars behind the SMC by ∼40%. They were identified via follow-up spectroscopy of serendipitous sources from the Chandra X-Ray Observatory matched with objects from the OGLE database. All quasars lie behind dense parts of the SMC and could be very useful for proper-motion studies. We analyze X-ray spectral and timing properties of the quasars. We discuss applications of those and other recently discovered quasars behind the SMC to the studies of absorption properties of the Cloud, its proper motion, and for establishing the geometrical distance to the SMC.

Abstract:Multiple studies have suggested a possible relationship between prior cholecystectomy and the occurrence of subsequent colorectal carcinoma. This relationship has been particularly noticed among female patients and for right-sided lesions of the colon. In the current study, the authors undertook a case-control study among patients who underwent colonoscopy in three private practices in New York City between April 1986 and March 1988. Over this period, 302 adenomatous polyp cases, 106 colon cancer cases, and 507 controls were interviewed regarding their prior history of cholecystectomy. Overall, no significant association was observed between cholecystectomy and either colorectal adenomatous polyps or cancer. Cholecystectomy does not appear to be a significant risk factor for colorectal neoplasia.
Questionable relationship between cholecystectomy and colon cancer

Abstract:The relationship between prior cholecystectomy and right-sided colon cancer was evaluated in a case-control study. The study population comprised 267 women with right-sided colon cancer (cases) and 268 women with left-sided colon cancer (controls). All patients were white females, aged between 40 and 69 years, and registered at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute between 1970 and 1982. Thirty cases (11.2%) and 21 controls (7.8%) had documented prior cholecystectomy (odds ratio 1.49, 95% confidence limits 0.83, 2.67). The temporal relationship between cholecystectomy and colon cancer and the presence of diabetes were also evaluated. The authors conclude that there is no significant relationship between prior cholecystectomy and the development of right-sided colon cancer.

Abstract:Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) affects infants between 1 month and 1 yr of age, has no known cause, and is diagnosed by exclusion of all other causes of death. The primary mechanism of death in SIDS is considered to be irreversible respiratory cessation during sleep. In a small sampling at necropsy we have observed a statistically significant (P < .005; determined morphometrically) reduction in the anatomic size of the pineal gland in SIDS infants, as compared to age‐matched controls. Whether correspondingly altered pineal glandular function is present in SIDS is as yet unanswered.

Abstract:Upper and lower bounds on the capacity and cutoff rate for direct-detection optical overlapping-pulse-position modulation channels are derived. It is shown that these bounds are asymptotically tight, in the sense that the difference between the upper and lower bounds converges to zero as the pulse position multiplicity M and/or the average photon count per pulse Q goes to infinity. The tightness of these bounds for finite values of M and Q is investigated by providing some numerical examples. Orders of magnitude of the rate of convergence of the difference between the bounds are also estimated.<<ETX>>

Abstract:: Some studies have found that cholecystectomy may increase the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), while others have reached inconsistent conclusions. We thus performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the incidence rate of CRC after cholecystectomy for patients with gallstones or gallbladder diseases, and whether the geographical location of the patients affected the results. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane for studies reporting changes in the incidence rate of CRC after cholecystectomy published before January 12, 2023. Our main endpoint was the occurrence of CRC. Data were extracted and pooled, and the relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. We assessed pooled data using a random-effects model. In total, 477 articles were identified, and 6 articles were eligible, including 7 studies that included 797,917 participants. Overall, the summarized research results showed that the risk of CRC was reduced in patients with gallbladder diseases who underwent cholecystectomy (RR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.65 to 0.99, p=0.040; I2=85.0%). In the subgroup analysis based on different geographical locations, cholecystectomy was not associated with the risk of CRC in the Western population (RR: 0.90, 95% CI: 0.65 to 1.25, p=0.522; I2=86.5%), but there was a negative correlation between cholecystectomy and the risk of CRC (RR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.60 to 0.73, p=0.000) in the Chinese population. Our findings support that for patients with gallstones or gallbladder diseases, the incidence of CRC after cholecystectomy is lower than that of patients who do not undergo cholecystectomy. Therefore, cholecystectomy may be a better choice for patients with asymptomatic cholecystolithiasis to reduce the possible CRC incidence.

Abstract:Objective: The relationship between cholecystectomy and the occurrence of subsequent colon cancer has been controversial. Using data collected as part of an incident case-control study of colon cancer conducted in northern California, Minnesota, and Utah, we evaluated this association. Methods: Participants were between 30 and 79 yr of age and had a first primary colon cancer diagnosed between October 1, 1991 and September 30, 1994. Analyses were adjusted for age, gender, family history of colorectal cancer, body mass index, dietary energy and fiber intake, use of aspirin or nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, and long-term leisure-time vigorous physical activity. Results: A weak positive association between cholecystectomy and proximal colon cancer (odds ratio [OR] and 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.3 [1.0-1.6]) was observed. This was counterbalanced by a weak, nonsignificant negative association (OR 0.8, 95% CI 0.6-1.1) with distal colon cancer leading to no overall association (OR 1.0, 95% CI 0.9-1.2). The association between colon cancer and cholecystectomy did not differ by gender or race, but it did differ by study area, with most of the increased association being attributed to the Minnesota population. The elevated risk of proximal colon cancer increased after cholecystectomy but disappeared after 14 years. Conclusions: Our results suggest that cholecystectomy or the underlying gallstone disease that prompts it may be related weakly to the risk of subsequent proximal colon cancer. However, the association may differ by geographic area of the country, and may be artifactual at least in part.

Abstract:For studying the postulated relationship between prior cholecystectomy, cholelithiasis, and occurrence of subsequent colorectal cancer, we examined in a retrospective study autopsy cases to get information about the frequency of them. The material consisted of 10,000 cases (female:male = 1,08:1) with an age maximum in the 8. decennium. Among them were 2457 (902 male and 1555 female) cases of cholelithiasis and 646 (211 male and 435 female) cases of cholecystectomy. 449 colorectal cancer were found, altogether. The incidence of cancer in cases without gallbladder disease amounts to 4.13%, in cases with cholelithiasis 5.37%, and after cholecystectomy 4.95%, respectively. The results must be discussed with care because Berkon's Fallacy. Further exploratory investigations are necessary.

Abstract:Entrainment and its perturbation in the auditory cortex of the rat: phase and frequency modulations Author: Anu Karvonen Supervisor: Markku Penttonen Master’s Thesis in psychology University of Jyvaskyla September 2010 48 pages Objective of the present study was to build oscillatory entrainment in the auditory cortex of the rat and perturb it selectively. There is hardly any previous research on entrainment so the study was of exploratory nature and a unique experimental design was used. Local field potentials (LFPs) were measured from a total of fifteen urethane-anesthetized rats via an extracellular microelectrode placed over the dura. In the four main experiments 2,5 Hz entrainment was created with tone trains of nine stimuli, the entraining frequency of the tone being 4000 Hz and the perturbation frequency of the tone being 4500 Hz. Perturbation was always in the eight tone of the tone train, in which the phase and/or frequency of the tone was changed. Also jitter in the entraining frequency and single tone experiments were studied. It was noted that the rat can be either in a so called up & down or complex state during the measuring, from which the complex state is the preferred state for analyzing response differences. Phase perturbation results suggested that there is a specific influence when the phase is made longer rather than shorter. The longer phase response became more negative than the preceding entraining tone response approximately at 62-124 ms and rose to more positive levels at around 168-224 ms. Frequency perturbation, in turn, caused more positive levels than the preceding entraining tone response roughly at 86-138 ms suggesting a differing timeline of changes. When combining phase and frequency perturbation, both the longer and shorter phase perturbation presented more positive amplitudes than the preceding entraining tone response approximately between 41-160 ms. The longer phase response was again more negative than the shorter one, timeline of differences being 23-141 ms and from 252 ms onwards. It was found that the response to a frequency change remains even in the presence of a jitter in the entraining frequency, which suggests that it does not matter if entrainment is at a fixed interval or if it varies semirandomly. In addition, an important result was that at first responses to the two different tones do not differ from each other and do not change during the first single tone experiment. Differences were only observed after an entraining experiment, when the perturbation tone response became more positive than the entraining tone response. It is suggested from the results that entrainment can create memory traces in the nervous system, a probability being that the trace is actually stronger for the perturbation stimuli.
The relationship between cholecystectomy and colon cancer: an Iowa study

Abstract:The relationship between cholecystectomy and subsequent development of colon cancer was investigated in a case-control study of 165 patients with histologically proven adenocarcinoma of the colon. These patients were from a community in Iowa where incidence of colon cancer was considered to be higher than average in the United States. The relative risk of developing colon cancer after cholecystectomy was shown to be 2.11 (P = .009) for the entire series and 2.91 (P = .002) for the female group. There was a difference of frequency in developing colon cancer after cholecystectomy between the right- and left-sided colons; the relative risk of the right versus the left colon cancer was 2.31 (P = .019). The other factors, including blood group, red cell indices, obesity, serum cholesterol, colonic diverticula, and co-existence of hyperplastic or adenomatous polyp disclosed no significant relation to colon cancer developed after cholecystectomy.

Abstract:Aim: Cholecystectomy has been suggested as a risk factor for colorectal cancer. However, the association of cholecystectomy and the risk of colorectal adenoma (CRA) remains unclear. We conducted a meta-analysis of observational studies to explore this relationship. Methods: We identified studies by a literature search of MEDLINE and EMBASE through 30 September 2011, and by searching the reference lists of pertinent articles. Summary relative risks (SRRs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with a random-effects model. Between-study heterogeneity was assessed using Cochran's Q statistic and the I2. Results: A total of 10 studies (including 4061 CRA cases) were included in this meta-analysis. Analysis of these 10 studies found that no effect of cholecystectomy on the risk of CRAs was shown (SRR, 1.17; 95% CI: 0.93-1.48), with no significant heterogeneity among these studies (P heterogeneity=0.106, I2=37.9%). This null association was seen in both men and women (men: SRR=1.00, 95% CI: 0.58-1.73; women: SRR=1.39, 95% CI: 0.95-2.04). Conclusion: The results of this meta-analysis suggest that there is no positive association between previous cholecystectomy and the risk of CRA development in both men and women.
Surgical Correction of Congenital Vertical Talus Under the Age of 2 Years

Abstract:Seven patients (10 feet) with true congenital vertical talus are described. The suggested pathomechanics of the condition correlated well with the rationale of surgical treatment. Correction of both forefoot and hindfoot deformities is necessary. Follow-up averaged 5.2 years. Cosmetic correction was excellent in seven of the 10 feet and good in the remaining three. These results indicate that there is no need for surgery to be performed in two stages and that it is not necessary for procedures to be as extensive as has been suggested in the literature.
Gallstones and colorectal cancer--there is a relationship, but it is hardly due to cholecystectomy

Abstract:The prevalence of gallstone disease in 145 consecutive patients with colorectal cancer was compared with gallstone prevalence in 4,159 subjects randomly selected from a population. The group of patients had a significantly higher prevalence of gallstone disease than the population (odds ratio = 1.59; 95 percent confidence limits 1.04-2.45), whereas cholecystectomies occurred with equal frequency in the two groups. There was a nonsignificant trend toward more right-sided cancers in patients with gallstones than in patients without. These results, together with available literature, give substantial evidence for an association between gallstones and colorectal cancer, an association which is not due to cholecystectomy being a predisposing factor to colorectal cancer. Sporadic findings of an association between cholecystectomy and colorectal cancer can be explained by the above relationship.
Prevalence and Risk Factors of Gastric and Colorectal Cancer after Cholecystectomy

Abstract:Background: Previous studies on the relationship between gastrointestinal (GI) cancer and cholecystectomy remain inconclusive. We aimed to evaluate this relationship, albeit particularly between cholecystectomy and gastric cancer or colorectal cancer (CRC), and the risk factors of cancer among individuals who have undergone cholecystectomy in Korea. Methods: In total, 4,222 patients who underwent laparoscopic or open cholecystectomy at our institution between January 2006 and December 2013 were included. Patients who underwent cholecystectomy for gallbladder cancer or were undergoing surgery for GI, hepatic, or pancreatobiliary cancers were excluded, as were those who developed stomach cancer or CRC within a year of their cholecystectomy. The included patients were followed until July 20, 2020. The standardized incidence ratio (SIR) was used to calculate the relative risk of GI cancer in cholecystectomy patients. Results: The median patient age (n = 3,588) at the time of cholecystectomy was 54.0 (range, 19-95) years, and the male-to-female ratio was 1:1.04. The median follow-up period after cholecystectomy was 15.0 (range, 0-146) months. We found a 108% greater risk of CRC (SIR, 2.08; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.28-3.17) and 154% increased risk of CRC in females (SIR, 2.54; 95% CI, 1.16-4.84). Based on multivariate analysis, an age of > 60 years was a significant risk factor for GI cancer in cholecystectomy patients. Conclusion: Cholecystectomy may increase risk of CRC, especially in females. Age was considered a risk factor of GI cancers in patients with history of cholecystectomy.

Abstract:Studies have reported that cholecystectomy may increase the risk of cholangiocarcinoma. However, this association is controversial. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the relationship between cholecystectomy and the risk of cholangiocarcinoma. Relevant studies were identified by searching PubMed, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science published before February 2017. We used the random effects model proposed by DerSimonian and Laird to quantify the relationship between cholecystectomy and risk of cholangiocarcinoma. Publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots, Begg's and Egger's tests. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to validate the stability of the results. 16 articles, comprising 220,376 patients with cholecystectomy and 562,392 healthy controls, were included in our research. Our meta-analysis suggested that the risk of cholangiocarcinoma was significantly higher in the cholecystectomized patients in comparison with healthy controls, with heterogeneity among studies (summary odds ratio [OR] = 0.72; confidence interval [CI] = 0.55-0.90; I2 = 69.5%). Additionally, this association was also observed in cohort studies (OR = 0.83; 95% CI = 0.73-0.94) and case-control studies (OR = 0.60; 95% CI = 0.40-0.80). However, When the intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma were analyzed separately, the present study only indicated cholecystectomy was associated with increased the risk of extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (OR = 1.19; 95% CI = 0.32-2.05), rather than intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (OR = 1.19; 95% CI = 0.32-2.05). In conclusion, cholecystectomy was associated with a significant 54% increase in the risk of cholangiocarcinoma, especially in the extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.
Cholecystectomy and colorectal carcinoma: a total-population historical prospective study

Abstract:The relationship between cholecystectomy and colorectal cancer in the Icelandic population was analyzed in a historical prospective study. A total of 3,425 individuals (857 males and 2,568 females) who underwent cholecystectomy during a 26-yr period (1955-1980) were followed for 8-33 yr. The risk of colonic cancer in Icelandic males increased significantly 11 yr or more after operation (relative risk, 2.73; 95% confidence interval, 1.25-5.19). This is the only study that shows a significantly increased risk of colonic cancer in males only. In spite of this increased risk, regular screening for colonic cancer in Icelandic males would probably not be warranted, since almost 70% of the males are 70 yr old or older at the time of diagnosis.

Abstract:A highly specific heterologous double-antibody RIA has been developed to measure rabbit PRL by using guinea pig antiserum to human PRL and ovine [125 I]iodo-PRL. Rabbit pituitary PRL and serum give parallel dose-response curves in the assay and no cross-reaction (less than 0.1%) occurs with GH, placental lactogens, LH, FSH, or TSH from several different species. The assay is suitable for the measurement of human, ovine, bovine, caprine, and canine PRL in addition to rabbit PRL, but shows no cross-reaction with rat PRL. Reproducibility and precision of the assay are within acceptable limits. Gel filtration of rabbit pituitary PRL and rabbit serum on Sephadex G-100 revealed coincident peaks of activity measured by RIA and by PRL radioreceptor assay. The molecular weight of rabbit PRL appeared similar to that of ovine PRL. Serum PRL levels increased after the injection of both TRH and chlorpromazine and were reduced by CB154 (Bromocriptine). Venepuncture stress caused an increase in PRL in nonpregnant or postpartum non-suckled animals, but small or no increases were seen in lactating female rabbits.
