Abstract:The narrowband kilometric radiation (nKOM) is a Jovian low-frequency radio component identified as a plasma emission produced in the region of the Io plasma torus. Measurements from the Waves instrument onboard the Juno spacecraft permitted to establish the distribution of nKOM occurrence and intensity as a function of frequency and latitude. We have developed a 3D geometrical model that can simulate at large scale the plasma emissions occurrence observed by a spacecraft based on an internal Jovian magnetic field model and a diffusive equilibrium model of the plasma density in Jupiter's inner magnetosphere. With this model, we propose a new method to discriminate the generation mechanism, wave mode, beaming and radio source location of plasma emissions. Here, this method is applied to the study of the nKOM observed from all latitudes by the Juno/Waves experiment to identify which conditions reasonably reproduce the observed occurrence distribution versus frequency and latitude. The results allow us to exclude the two main nKOM models published so far, and to show that the emission must be produced at the local plasma frequency and beamed along its local gradient in the direction of decreasing frequencies. We also propose that depending on its latitude, Juno observes two distinct kinds of nKOM: the low frequency nKOM in ordinary mode at high latitudes and high frequency nKOM on extraordinary mode at low latitudes. Both radio source locations are found to be distributed near the centrifugal equator from the outer edge to the inner edge of the Io plasma torus.

Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere Coupling Study at Jupiter Based on Juno's First 30 Orbits and Modeling Tools

Abstract:The dynamics of the Jovian magnetosphere is controlled by the interplay of the planet's fast rotation, its solar-wind interaction and its main plasma source at the Io torus, mediated by coupling processes involving its magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere. At the ionospheric level, these processes can be characterized by a set of parameters including conductances, field-aligned currents, horizontal currents, electric fields, transport of charged particles along field lines including the fluxes of electrons precipitating into the upper atmosphere which trigger auroral emissions, and the particle and Joule heating power dissipation rates into the upper atmosphere. Determination of these key parameters makes it possible to estimate the net transfer of momentum and energy between Jovian upper atmosphere and equatorial magnetosphere. A method based on a combined use of Juno multi-instrument data and three modeling tools was developed by Wang et al. (2021, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021ja029469) and applied to an analysis of the first nine orbits to retrieve these parameters along Juno's magnetic footprint. We extend this method to the first 30 Juno science orbits and to both hemispheres. Our results reveal a large variability of these parameters from orbit to orbit and between the two hemispheres. They also show dominant trends. Southern current systems are consistent with the generation of a region of sub-corotating ionospheric plasma flows, while both super-corotating and sub-corotating plasma flows are found in the north. These results are discussed in light of the previous space and ground-based observations and currently available models of plasma convection and current systems, and their implications are assessed.

Abstract:We present new model results for H 2 O, O 2 , H 2 , O, and H in the atmosphere of Ganymede. The results are obtained from a collision-less 3D Monte-Carlo model that includes sublimation, ion and electron sputtering, and ion and electron radiolysis. Because Ganymede has its own magnetic field, its immediate plasma environment is particularly complex. The interaction between Ganymede’s and Jupiter’s magnetospheres makes it highly variable in both space and time. The recent Juno Ganymede flyby provided us with new data on the electron local environment. Based on the electron measurements recorded by the Jovian Auroral Distributions Experiment (JADE), we implement two electron populations, one for the moon’s polar regions and one for the moon’s auroral regions. Comparing the atmospheric contribution of these newly defined electron populations to the overall source and loss processes is one of the main goals of this work. Our analysis shows that for H 2 O, sublimation remains the most important source process even after accounting for the new electron populations, delivering more than three orders of magnitude more H 2 O molecules to the atmosphere than all other source processes combined. The source fluxes for O 2 and H 2 , on the other hand, are dominated by radiolysis induced by the auroral electrons, assuming that the electron fluxes JADE measured during Juno’s transit of Ganymede’s magnetopause current layer are representative of auroral electrons. Atomic O and H are mainly added to the atmosphere through the dissociation of O 2 and H 2 , which is primarily induced by auroral electrons. Our understanding of Ganymede’s atmosphere today is mainly based on spectroscopic observations. The interpretation of spectroscopic data strongly depends on assumptions taken, though. Our analysis shows that for a holistic understanding of Ganymede’s atmosphere, simultaneous observations of the moon’s surface, atmosphere, and full plasma environment (thermal and energetic ions and electrons) at different times and locations (both with respect to Ganymede and with respect to Jupiter) are particularly important. Such measurements are planned by ESA’s Jupiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE), in particular by the Particle Environment Package (PEP), which will greatly advance our understanding of Ganymede and its atmosphere and plasma environment.

Abstract:The frequent occurrence of nonlinear wave propagation in astrophysical and laboratory settings warrants compelling exploration of dusty plasmas. We studied the propagation of waves in dusty plasmas, paying particular attention to the environments in which these plasmas occur, such as comet tails and interstellar matter. The theory of nonlinear phenomena in multicomponent plasma systems has been applied to phenomena such as shock-like waves and cnoidal waves. The strong magnetic field of Jupiter's magnetosphere, which contains dusty plasma, can significantly affect wave propagation, and the wave structures and phase transitions can be effectively expressed using the Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation. This equation provides a powerful tool for studying such phenomena within this environment. However, it is worth noting that although the ZK equation offers valuable insights into phase transitions during wave propagation processes across different systems, Jupiter's magnetospheric environment may require more specialised models to reveal its unique features.

Abstract:Abstract The Juno spacecraft provides unique close‐up views of Jupiter underneath the synchrotron radiation belts while circling Jupiter in its 53‐day orbits. The microwave radiometer (MWR) onboard measures Jupiter thermal radiation at wavelengths between 1.37 and 50 cm, penetrating the atmosphere to a pressure of a few hundred bars and greater. The mission provides the first measurements of Jupiter's deep atmosphere, down to ~250 bars in pressure, constraining the vertical distributions of its kinetic temperature and constituents. As a result, vertical structure models of Jupiter's atmosphere may now be tested by comparison with MWR data. Taking into account the MWR beam patterns and observation geometries, we test several published Jupiter atmospheric models against MWR data. Our residual analysis confirms Li et al.'s (2017, https://doi.org/10.1002/2017GL073159) result that ammonia depletion persists down to 50–60 bars where ground‐based Very Large Array was not able to observe. We also present an extension of the study that iteratively improves the input model and generates Jupiter brightness temperature maps which best match the MWR data. A feature of Juno's north‐to‐south scanning approach is that latitudinal structure is more easily obtained than longitudinal, and the creation of optimum two‐dimensional maps is addressed in this approach.
Properties of electrons accelerated by the Ganymede-magnetosphere interaction: survey of Juno high-latitude observations

Abstract:The encounter between the Jovian co-rotating plasma and Ganymede gives rise to electromagnetic waves that propagate along the magnetic field lines and accelerate particles by resonant or non-resonant wave-particle interaction. They ultimately precipitate into Jupiter's atmosphere and trigger auroral emissions. In this study, we use Juno/JADE, Juno/UVS data, and magnetic field line tracing to characterize the properties of electrons accelerated by the Ganymede-magnetosphere interaction in the far-field region. We show that the precipitating energy flux exhibits an exponential decay as a function of downtail distance from the moon, with an e-folding value of 29°, consistent with previous UV observations from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We characterize the electron energy distributions and show that two distributions exist. Electrons creating the Main Alfvén Wing (MAW) spot and the auroral tail always have broadband distribution and a mean characteristic energy of 2.2 keV while in the region connected to the Transhemispheric Electron Beam (TEB) spot the electrons are distributed non-monotonically, with a higher characteristic energy above 10 keV. Based on the observation of bidirectional electron beams, we suggest that Juno was located within the acceleration region during the 11 observations reported. We thus estimate that the acceleration region is extended, at least, between an altitude of 0.5 and 1.3 Jupiter radius above the 1-bar surface. Finally, we estimate the size of the interaction region in the Ganymede orbital plane using far-field measurements. These observations provide important insights for the study of particle acceleration processes involved in moon-magnetosphere interactions.

Jupiter Evolutionary Models Incorporating Stably Stratified Regions

Abstract:We address the issue of which broad set of initial conditions for the planet Jupiter best matches the current presence of a ``fuzzy core" of heavy elements, while at the same time comporting with measured parameters such as its effective temperature, atmospheric helium abundance, radius, and atmospheric metallicity. Our focus is on the class of fuzzy cores that can survive convective mixing to the present day and on the unique challenges of an inhomogeneous Jupiter with stably-stratified regions now demanded by the \textit{Juno} gravity data. Hence, using the new code \texttt{APPLE}, we attempt to put a non-adiabatic Jupiter into an evolutionary context. This requires not only a mass density model, the major relevant byproduct of the \textit{Juno} data, but a thermal model that is subject to interior heat transport, a realistic atmospheric flux boundary, a helium rain algorithm, and the latest equation of state. The result is a good fit to most major thermal, compositional, and structural constraints that still preserve a fuzzy core and that should inform future more detailed models of the current Jupiter in the context of its evolution from birth.

Abstract:Jupiter's satellite auroral footprints are a consequence of the interaction between the Jovian magnetic field with co-rotating iogenic plasma and the Galilean moons. The disturbances created near the moons propagate as Alfvén waves along the magnetic field lines. The position of the moons is therefore "Alfvénically" connected to their respective auroral footprint. The angular separation from the instantaneous magnetic footprint can be estimated by the so-called lead angle. That lead angle varies periodically as a function of orbital longitude, since the time for the Alfvén waves to reach the Jovian ionosphere varies accordingly. Using spectral images of the Main Alfvén Wing auroral spots collected by Juno-UVS during the first forty-three orbits, this work provides the first empirical model of the Io, Europa and Ganymede equatorial lead angles for the northern and southern hemispheres. Alfvén travel times between the three innermost Galilean moons to Jupiter's northern and southern hemispheres are estimated from the lead angle measurements. We also demonstrate the accuracy of the mapping from the Juno magnetic field reference model (JRM33) at the completion of the prime mission for M-shells extending to at least 15RJ . Finally, we shows how the added knowledge of the lead angle can improve the interpretation of the moon-induced decametric emissions.

Study of Jupiter's Interior with Quadratic Monte Carlo Simulations

Abstract:We construct models for Jupiter's interior that match the gravity data obtained by the Juno and Galileo spacecrafts. To generate ensembles of models, we introduce a novel quadratic Monte Carlo technique that is more efficient in confining fitness landscapes than affine invariant method that relies on linear stretch moves. We compare how long it takes the ensembles of walkers in both methods to travel to the most relevant parameter region. Once there, we compare the autocorrelation time and error bars of the two methods. For a ring potential and the 2d Rosenbrock function, we find that our quadratic Monte Carlo technique is significantly more efficient. Furthermore we modified the walk moves by adding a scaling factor. We provide the source code and examples so that this method can be applied elsewhere. Here we employ our method to generate five-layer models for Jupiter's interior that include winds and a prominent dilute core, which allows us to match the planet's even and odd gravity harmonics. We compare predictions from the different model ensembles and analyze how much an increase of the temperature at 1 bar and ad hoc change to the equation of state affects the inferred amount of heavy elements in atmosphere and in the planet overall.

Abstract:During its 53-day polar orbit around Jupiter, Juno often crosses the boundaries of the Jovian magnetosphere (namely the magnetopause and bow shock). From the boundary locations, the upstream solar wind dynamic pressure can be inferred, which in turn illustrates the state of compression or relaxation of the system. The aim of this study is to examine Jovian radio emissions during magnetospheric compressions, in order to determine the relationship between the solar wind and Jovian radio emissions. In this paper, we give a complete list of bow shock and magnetopause crossings (from June 2016 to August 2022), along with some extra informations (e.g. solar wind dynamic pressure and position of the standoff distances inferred from Joy et al. (2002)). We then select two compression events that occur in succession (inferred from magnetopause crossings) and we present a case study of the response of the Jovian radio emissions. We demonstrate that magnetospheric compressions lead to the activation of new radio sources. Newly activated broadband kilometric emissions are observed almost simultaneously to compression of the magnetosphere, with sources covering a large range of longitudes. Decametric emission sources are seen to be activated more than one rotation later only at specific longitudes and dusk local times. Finally, the activation of narrowband kilometric radiation is not observed during the compression phase, but when the magnetosphere is in its expansion phase.

Abstract:At Jupiter, part of the auroral radio emissions are induced by the Galilean moons Io, Europa and Ganymede. Until now, except for Ganymede, they have been only remotely detected, using ground-based radio-telescopes or electric antennas aboard spacecraft. The polar trajectory of the Juno orbiter allows the spacecraft to cross the range of magnetic flux tubes which sustain the various Jupiter-satellite interactions, and in turn to sample in situ the associated radio emission regions. In this study, we focus on the detection and the characterization of radio sources associated with Io, Europa and Ganymede. Using electric wave measurements or radio observations (Juno/Waves), in situ electron measurements (Juno/JADE-E), and magnetic field measurements (Juno/MAG) we demonstrate that the Cyclotron Maser Instability (CMI) driven by a loss-cone electron distribution function is responsible for the encountered radio sources. We confirmed that radio emissions are associated with Main (MAW) or Reflected Alfvén Wing (RAW), but also show that for Europa and Ganymede, induced radio emissions are associated with Transhemispheric Electron Beam (TEB). For each traversed radio source, we determine the latitudinal extension, the CMI-resonant electron energy, and the bandwidth of the emission. We show that the presence of Alfvén perturbations and downward field aligned currents are necessary for the radio emissions to be amplified.

Abstract:We present three-dimensional (3D) maps of Jupiter's atmospheric circulation at cloud-top level from Doppler-imaging data obtained in the visible domain with JIVE, the second node of the JOVIAL network, which is mounted on the Dunn Solar Telescope at Sunspot, New Mexico. We report on 12 nights of observations between May 4 and May 30, 2018, representing a total of about 80 hours. Firstly, the average zonal wind profile derived from our data is compatible with that derived from cloud-tracking measurements performed on Hubble Space Telescope images obtained in April 2018 from the Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program. Secondly, we present the first ever two-dimensional maps of Jupiter's atmospheric circulation from Doppler measurements. The zonal velocity map highlights well-known atmospheric features, such as the equatorial hot spots and the Great Red Spot (GRS). In addition to zonal winds, we derive meridional and vertical velocity fields from the Doppler data. The motions attributed to vertical flows are mainly located at the boundary between the equatorial belts and tropical zones, which could indicate active motion in theses regions. Qualitatively, these results compare well to recent Juno data that have unveiled the three-dimensional structure of Jupiter's wind field. To the contrary, the motions attributed to meridional circulation are very different from what is obtained by cloud tracking, except at the GRS. Because of limitations with data resolution and processing techniques, we acknowledge that our measurement of vertical or meridional flows of Jupiter are still to be confirmed.

Abstract:Jupiter's magnetosheath is a natural yet complex laboratory for analyzing compressible plasma turbulence. Recent observations by the Juno mission provide a promising opportunity for the first time to reckon the energy cascade rate in the magnetohydrodynamic scales in the vicinity of Jupiter's space. In the present work, a two-dimensional model is constructed for a whistler wave that is nonlinearly coupled with a wave magnetic field via ion density perturbation. The dynamics of whistler wave propagating in the direction of the magnetic field are derived within the limit of the two-fluid modeling approach. The magnetic field localization along with magnetic field spectra and spectral slope variations are estimated to realize the turbulence generation and energy cascade from large to small scales in the Jovian magnetosheath region. The simulated magnetic field spectrum in the wave number (in the unit of ion inertial length ρi) consists of turbulence in the inertial range with a spectral slope of -1.4 and a spectral knee at kρi = 1. Subsequently, the spectral slope increases to -2.6 and the spectrum becomes steeper. The simulated magnetic field spectrum in the wave number is further translated into the frequency domain using the whistler wave dispersion relation and by considering the Taylor frozen-in condition. The analytically estimated magnetic field spectrum slopes, i.e., -1.8 and -4.2 at low and high frequencies are further compared with recent Juno mission observations. The comparison further affirms the existence of Kolmogorov scaling, a spectral knee, and steepening in the spectrum at high frequencies. Furthermore, it is found that the two-fluid model can reasonably simulate the turbulence effects in Jovian magnetosheath in terms of magnetic field spectral distribution in wave number and frequency domains.

Abstract:Jupiter's magnetosphere is considered to be the most powerful particle accelerator in the Solar System, accelerating electrons from eV to 70 MeV and ions to GeV energies. How electromagnetic processes drive energy and particle flows, producing and removing energetic particles, is at the heart of Heliophysics. Particularly, the 2013 Decadal Strategy for Solar and Space Physics was to "Discover and characterize fundamental processes that occur both within the heliosphere and throughout the universe". The Jovian system offers an ideal natural laboratory to investigate all of the universal processes highlighted in the previous Decadal. The X-ray waveband has been widely used to remotely study plasma across astrophysical systems. The majority of astrophysical emissions can be grouped into 5 X-ray processes: fluorescence, thermal/coronal, scattering, charge exchange and particle acceleration. The Jovian system offers perhaps the only system that presents a rich catalog of all of these X-ray emission processes and can also be visited in-situ, affording the special possibility to directly link fundamental plasma processes with their resulting X-ray signatures. This offers invaluable ground-truths for astrophysical objects beyond the reach of in-situ exploration (e.g. brown dwarfs, magnetars or galaxy clusters that map the cosmos). Here, we show how coupling in-situ measurements with in-orbit X-ray observations of Jupiter's radiation belts, Galilean satellites, Io Torus, and atmosphere addresses fundamental heliophysics questions with wide-reaching impact across helio- and astrophysics. New developments like miniaturized X-ray optics and radiation-tolerant detectors, provide compact, lightweight, wide-field X-ray instruments perfectly suited to the Jupiter system, enabling this exciting new possibility.

Abstract:The Juno spacecraft had previously observed intense high frequency wave emission, broadband electron and energetic proton energy distributions within magnetic flux tubes connected to Io, Europa, Ganymede, and their wakes. In this work, we report consistent enhancements in <46 keV energy proton fluxes during these satellite flux tube transit intervals. We find enhanced fluxes at discrete energies linearly separated in velocity for proton distributions within Io wake flux tubes, and both proton and electron distributions within Europa and Ganymede wake flux tubes. We propose these discrete enhancements to be a result of resonances between particles' bounce motion with standing Alfvén waves generated by the satellite‐magnetosphere interaction. We corroborate this hypothesis by comparing the bounce and field‐line resonance periods expected at the satellites' orbits. Hence, we find bounce‐resonant acceleration is a fundamental process that can accelerate particles in Jupiter's inner magnetosphere and other astrophysical plasmas.
