Abstract:With the escalation of heterogeneous data traffic, the research on optical wireless communication (OWC) has attracted much attention, owing to its advantages such as wide spectrum, low power consumption and high security. Ubiquitous optical devices, e.g. light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and cameras, are employed to support optical wireless links. Since the distribution of these optical devices is usually dense, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) can be naturally adopted to attain spatial diversity gain or spatial multiplexing gain. As the scale of OWC networks enlarges, optical MIMO can also collaborate with network-level operations, like user/AP grouping, to enhance the network throughput. Since OWC is preferred for short-range communications and is sensitive to the directions/rotations of transceivers, optical MIMO links vary frequently and sharply in outdoor scenarios when considering the mobility of optical devices, raising new challenges to network design. In this work, we present an overview of optical MIMO techniques, as well as the cooperation of MIMO and user/AP grouping in OWC networks. In consideration of the challenges for outdoor OWC, key technologies are then proposed to facilitate the adoption of optical MIMO in outdoor scenarios, especially in vehicular ad hoc networks. Lastly, future applications of MIMO in OWC networks are discussed. This article is part of the theme issue 'Optical wireless communication'.

Abstract:Optical camera communication (OCC) has garnered worldwide research attention, due to its immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and efficient utilization of spectrum resources. However, the limited bandwidth of the OCC system and the timing offset of the camera result in low system throughput. To enhance the OCC throughput, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a frame-rate adaptive fractionally spaced equalization algorithm (FA-FSE) for the joint mitigation of severe inter-symbol interference (ISI) and timing offset arising in OCC. Experimental results validate its correct and power-efficient function, leading to a record aggregated throughput of 250.96 kbit/s, when the 8-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-8) signals are independently modulated to eight chip-on-board light emitting diode (COB-LED) light strips, while simultaneously received by a smartphone 10 cm away.

Abstract:This paper first brings a single receiver multiple-input-multiple-output (SR-MIMO) model to realize the space multiplexing in the visible light communication (VLC) system. The signals from two transmitters are super-imposed in the receiver thus to realize a specially superposed modulation. Depending on the power ratio between two transmitters, various superposed signal structures can be obtained. In order to separate the superposed signal, we design a novel detection algorithm which consists of the successive interference cancellation (SIC) and the look-up table (LUT). Extensive experiments demonstrate that a data rate of 1.5Gbit/s is achieved in the 1.3-m indoor line-of-sight (LOS) scenario with the bit error rates (BERs) are below the forward error correction (FEC) threshold. Abstract:Line-of-sight wireless communications can benefit from the simultaneous transmission of multiple independent data streams through the same medium in order to increase system capacity. A common approach is to use conventional spatial multiplexing with spatially separated transmitter/receiver antennae, for which inter-channel crosstalk is reduced by employing multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) signal processing at the receivers. Another fairly recent approach to transmitting multiple data streams is to use orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) multiplexing, which employs the orthogonality among OAM beams to minimize inter-channel crosstalk and enable efficient (de) multiplexing. In this paper, we explore the potential of utilizing both of these multiplexing techniques to provide system design flexibility and performance enhancement. We demonstrate a 16 Gbit/s millimeter-wave link using OAM multiplexing combined with conventional spatial multiplexing over a short link distance of 1.8 meters (shorter than Rayleigh distance). Specifically, we implement a spatial multiplexing system with a 2x2 antenna aperture architecture, in which each transmitter aperture contains two multiplexed 4 Gbit/s data-carrying OAM beams. A MIMO-based signal processing is used at the receiver to mitigate channel interference. Our experimental results show performance improvements for all channels after MIMO processing, with bit-error rates of each channel below the forward error correction limit of 3.8 x 10(-3). We also simulate the capacity for both the 4 x 4 MIMO system and the 2 x 2 MIMO with OAM multiplexing. Our work indicates that OAM multiplexing and conventional spatial multiplexing can be simultaneously utilized to provide design flexibility. The combination of these two approaches can potentially enhance system capacity given a fixed aperture area of the transmitter/receiver (when the link distance is within a few Rayleigh distances).

Abstract:The combination of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation has been shown to be an effective way to substantially enhance the capacity of bandlimited optical wireless communication (OWC) systems. In this paper, we propose four OFDM-based generalized optical MIMO techniques for intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) OWC systems, including OFDM-based frequency-domain generalized spatial modulation (FD-GSM), frequency-domain generalized spatial multiplexing (FD-GSMP), time-domain generalized spatial modulation (TD-GSM) and time-domain generalized spatial multiplexing (TD-GSMP). For OFDM-based FD-GSM and FDGSMP, spatial mapping is performed in the frequency domain, while it is carried out in the time domain for OFDM-based TDGSM and TD-GSMP. To efficiently estimate both spatial and constellation symbols in each OFDM-based generalized optical MIMO technique, a corresponding maximum-likelihood (ML) detection algorithm is designed. Extensive simulations are conducted to evaluate and compare the performance of the proposed four OFDM-based generalized optical MIMO techniques in a typical indoor environment. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of OFDM-based TD-GSM and TD-GSMP for various spectral efficiencies of 4, 5 and 6 bits/s/Hz, when a relatively high secondary direct current (DC) bias is adopted.

Abstract:As a new type of optical communication device, the optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) can reflect, shape and split optical signals in real time, and is expected to expand the application scenarios of optical wireless communication. However, in the existing research, a single OIRS cannot support optical multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication since OIRS performs the same modulation on all incident light. In this paper, we propose an optical MIMO communication system based on joint control of base station and optical phased array (OPA)-type OIRS. The communication system utilizes the OPA -type OIRS's characteristic of superimposing the input optical phase and the OIRS's phase to implement a joint beam control scheme of the base station and the OIRS, thereby realizing optical MIMO communication with a single OIRS. Considering the OIRS's physical model, pointing error, atmospheric turbulence and attenuation, our work establishes the mathematical model of the optical MIMO communication system, and derives the closed-form expression of the probability density function (PDF) of the channel fading, asymptotic outage probability and bit error rate (BER) for the first time. Experiments and simulations are built to verify the feasibility and accuracy of our system model and theoretical derivation, which proves that our results are consistent with the actual system.

Abstract:Multiplexing multiple orbital angular momentum (OAM) channels enables high-capacity optical communication. However, optical scattering from ambient microparticles in the atmosphere or mode coupling in optical fibers significantly decreases the orthogonality between OAM channels for demultiplexing and eventually increases crosstalk in communication. Here, we propose a novel scattering-matrix-assisted retrieval technique (SMART) to demultiplex OAM channels from highly scattered optical fields and achieve an experimental crosstalk of -13.8 dB in the parallel sorting of 24 OAM channels after passing through a scattering medium. The SMART is implemented in a self-built data transmission system that employs a digital micromirror device to encode OAM channels and realize reference-free calibration simultaneously, thereby enabling a high tolerance to misalignment. We successfully demonstrate high-fidelity transmission of both gray and color images under scattering conditions at an error rate of <0.08%. This technique might open the door to high-performance optical communication in turbulent environments.

Abstract:This work investigates spatial-mode multiplexing (SMM) for practical free-space optical communication (FSO) systems using direct detection. Unlike several works in the literature where mutually incoherent channels are assumed, we consider mutually coherent channels that accurately describe SMM FSO systems employing a single laser source at the transmitter with a narrow linewidth. We develop an analytical model for such mutually coherent channels and derive expressions for aggregate achievable rate (AAR). Through numerical simulations, it was shown that there exist optimal transmit mode sets which result in the maximal asymptotic AAR at high transmitted power. Moreover, in order to resolve the reliability issues of such SMM FSO systems in the presence of turbulence, a so-called mode diversity scheme is proposed that can be easily implemented along with SMM FSO systems. It is demonstrated that mode diversity can significantly improve the outage probability and the outage achievable rate performance of the multiplexed channels in SMM FSO systems degraded by turbulence.

A Novel Optical Multiplexing Approach for Computer Interconnection and Optical Digital Transmission

Abstract:Here we propose a novel optical multiplexing approach by means of the dispersion matching technique. Before transmission, the optical signals in pulse format from different users spread along the time axis to different scales by using artificial dispersion components. At the receiver side, the target signal can be retrieved by using the reverse dispersion component which only recovers the original target pulse shape. After the optical to electrical conversion, the energy of the interference is concentrated on lower part of the frequency domain while the energy of the target signal covers much broader. Thus, one can use filters to distinguish the target signal and eliminate the interference. Numerical analysis is performed with respect to the interference filtering and impairment of fiber dispersion itself. Besides, the comparison with OCDMA technology is also depicted. This multiplexing approach is very promising for applications in local area computer networks and short range communication systems.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM), described by an azimuthal phase term exp ( jl theta ) , has unbound orthogonal states with different topological charges l. Therefore, with the explosive growth of global communication capacity, especially for short-distance optical interconnects, light-carrying OAM has proved its great potential to improve transmission capacity and spectral efficiency in the space-division multiplexing system due to its orthogonality, security, and compatibility with other techniques. Meanwhile, 100-m free-space optical interconnects become an alternative solution for the "last mile" problem and provide interbuilding communication. We experimentally demonstrate a 260-m secure optical interconnect using OAM multiplexing and 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals. We study the beam wandering, power fluctuation, channel cross talk, bit-error-rate performance, and link security. Additionally, we also investigate the link performance for 1-to-9 multicasting at the range of 260 m. Considering that the power distribution may be affected by atmospheric turbulence, we introduce an offline feedback process to make it flexibly controllable.

Abstract:We review recent progress in high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexed free-space optical communication systems. The outdoor atmospheric turbulence is emulated by an indoor turbulence emulator, which is based on split-step beam propagation method. Adaptive optics, channel coding, Huffman coding combined with LDPC coding, and spatial offset are used for turbulence mitigation; while OAM multiplexing and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) are applied to boost aggregate capacity.

Abstract:Due to the relatively high cost of deploying optical fibers, free space optical (FSO) links have been developed as a cost-effective alternative technology for next generation cellular networks. However, in order to have a practical role in the physical layer of future communication systems, data rate of FSO links must be improved. To this aim, in this paper we employ a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiplexing scheme with two transceivers to increase the data rate of the considered FSO system. Unlike MIMO diversity case, the performance of MIMO multiplexing is significantly affected by interference be- tween parallel channels. To solve this problem, we propose a novel space-time scheme which significantly reduces the interference between parallel channels. We analyze the performance of the proposed scheme in terms of BER and outage probability.

Abstract:Spatial modulation (SM) and space shift keying (SSK) techniques have the unique advantages of their single-radio-frequency (RF) structures compared with conventional multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) techniques. However, the transmission rates of these techniques are decided by the maximal switching frequency or by the minimal switching time between the RF chain and transmit antennas, which has been a bottleneck for their applications in future broadband wireless communications. To alleviate this problem, we propose a class of novel offset SM (OSM) and offset SSK (OSSK) schemes, with the aid of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. Compared with conventional SM and SSK, the proposed OSM and OSSK schemes can reduce the switching frequency of the RF chain, by introducing an offset between the connected RF chain and the index of the spatial modulated antenna. In extreme conditions, the proposed OSM and OSSK can work without RF switching while maintaining the single-RF advantage of conventional SM and SSK schemes. Through theoretical analysis, we also develop the bit-error rate (BER) performance bounds for the proposed two schemes. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed OSM and OSSK outperform their counterparts, including conventional SM, SSK, CSI-aided SM, and CSI-aided SSK, while having a simplified RF-switching structure.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a new hybrid code structure based on the overlapping of two light sources to produce the effect of multi-voltage amplitudes. And we also proposed an efficient polarity reversal threshold (RRT) algorithm for multilevel based OCC system. Then taking the issue of SPO into account, a novel adaptive sampling method (ASM) is proposed, which can effectively alleviate the problem of SPO and further enhance the performance of multilevel OCC. It is demonstrated that a data rate of 8.4 Kbit/s can be achieved by applying the proposed two algorithms.

Abstract:Optical camera communication (OCC) is one of the most promising optical wireless technology communication systems. This technology has a number of benefits compared to radio frequency, including unlimited spectrum, no congestion due to high usage, and low operating costs. OCC operates in order to transmit an optical signal from a light-emitting diode (LED) and receive the signal with a camera. However, identifying, detecting, and extracting data in a complex area with very high mobility is the main challenge in operating the OCC. In this paper, we design and implement a real-time OCC system that can communicate in high mobility conditions, based on You Only Look Once version 8 (YOLOv8). We utilized an LED array that can be identified accurately and has an enhanced data transmission rate due to a greater number of source lights. Our system is validated in a highly mobile environment with camera movement speeds of up to 10 m/s at 2 m, achieving a bit error rate of 10-2. In addition, this system achieves high accuracy of the LED detection algorithm with mAP0.5 and mAP0.5:0.95 values of 0.995 and 0.8604, respectively. The proposed method has been tested in real time and achieves processing speeds up to 1.25 ms.
