Abstract:Many authors have studied various functional equations of forms patterned on the equation expressed as ga2+b2=g(a)+g(b), which can be considered, e.g., for real functions. Such equations are usually referred to as radical functional equations or of the radical type. Authors mainly study the so-called Ulam stability of such equations, i.e., they investigate how much the mappings satisfying the equations approximately (in a sense) differ from the exact solutions of these equations. Quite often, information about the solutions of these equations is also provided, but unfortunately, sometimes, such information is given in a misleading or incomplete way. It seems, therefore, that there is a need for a publication containing simple descriptions of such solutions (with appropriate examples), which would help in easy correction of such information and avoidance of similar problems for future authors. This is the main motivation for this expository paper. We present a general approach to the topic and consider two general forms of such equations. Moreover, the results presented in this paper show significant symmetry between the solutions of numerous functional equations and the solutions of equations of the radical type that correspond to them. To make this publication accessible to a wider audience, we omit various related information, avoid advanced generalizations, and present several simple examples.

Rational Solutions of Parametric First-Order Algebraic Differential Equations

Abstract:In this paper we give a procedure for finding rational solutions of a given first-order ODE with functional and constant coefficients which occur in a rational way. We derive an associated system with the same solvability, and sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of rational solutions are given. In the case where all parametric coefficients are constant, we give an algorithm to compute the rational solutions. In the case where one functional coefficient appears, we algorithmically find rational general solutions which rationally depend on the appearing transcendental constant. In the other cases, the presented procedure is not completely algorithmic.

Solving Functional Equations Dear to W.T. Tutte using the Naive (yet fullly rigorous!) Guess And Check Method

Abstract:In his seminal paper ``A census of planar triangulations", published in 1962, the iconic graph theorist (and code-breaker), W.T. Tutte, spent a few pages to prove that a certain bi-variate generating function that enumerates triangulations, satisfies a certain functional equation. He then used his genius to actually solve it, giving closed-form solutions to the enumerating sequences. While the first part, of deriving the functional equation, still needs human ingenuity, the second part, of solving it, can nowadays be fully automated. Our Maple program, accompanying this paper, Tutte.txt, can not only solve Tutte's original equation in a few seconds, it can also solve many, far more complicated ones, way beyond the scope of even such a giant as W.T. Tutte. We use our favorite method of ``guess and check" and show how it can always be made fully rigorous (if desired).

Abstract:Given a linear differential equation with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(x)$, an important question is to know whether its full space of solutions consists of algebraic functions, or at least if one of its specific solutions is algebraic. After presenting motivating examples coming from various branches of mathematics, we advertise in an elementary way a beautiful local-global arithmetic approach to these questions, initiated by Grothendieck in the late sixties. This approach has deep ramifications and leads to the still unsolved Grothendieck-Katz $p$-curvature conjecture.

Abstract:Functional equations (FE) arise quite naturally in the analysis of stochastic systems of different kinds : queueing and telecommunication networks, random walks, enumeration of planar lattice walks, etc. Frequently, the object is to determine the probability generating function of some positive random vector in $Z\_n^+$. Although the situation n = 1 is more classical, we quote an interesting non local functional equation which appeared in modelling a divide and conquer protocol for a muti-access broadcast channel. As for n = 2, we outline the theory reducing these linear FEs to boundary value problems of Riemann-Hilbert-Carleman type, with closed form integral solutions. Typical queueing examples analyzed over the last 45 years are sketched. Furthermore, it is also sometimes possible to determine the nature of the functions (e.g., rational, algebraic, holonomic), as illustrated in a combinatorial context, where asymptotics are briefly tackled. For general situations (e.g., big jumps, or n $\ge$ 3), only prospective comments are made, because then no concrete theory exists.

Abstract:Functional graphs (FGs) model the graph structures used to analyse the behaviour of functions from a discrete set to itself. In turn, such functions are used to study real complex phenomena evolving in time. As the systems involved can be quite large, it is interesting to decompose and factorise them into several subgraphs acting together. Polynomial equations over functional graphs provide a formal way to represent this decomposition and factorisation mechanism, and solving them validates or invalidates hypotheses on their decomposability. The current solution method breaks down a single equation into a series of basic equations of the form AxX = B (with A, X, and B being FGs) to identify the possible solutions. However, it is able to consider just FGs made of cycles only. This work proposes an algorithm for solving these basic equations for general connected FGs. By exploiting a connection with the cancellation problem, we prove that the upper bound to the number of solutions is closely related to the size of the cycle in the coefficient A of the equation. The cancellation problem is also involved in the main algorithms provided by the paper. We introduce a polynomial-time semi-decision algorithm able to provide constraints that a potential solution will have to satisfy if it exists. Then, exploiting the ideas introduced in the first algorithm, we introduce a second exponential-time algorithm capable of finding all solutions by integrating several 'hacks' that try to keep the exponential as tight as possible.

Abstract:Singular equations with rank-deficient Jacobians arise frequently in algebraic computing applications. As shown in case studies in this paper, direct and intuitive modeling of algebraic problems often results in nonisolated singular solutions. The challenges become formidable when the problems need to be solved from empirical data of limited accuracy. A newly discovered low-rank Newton's iteration emerges as an effective regularization mechanism that enables solving singular equations accurately with an error bound in the same order as the data error. This paper elaborates applications of new methods on solving singular algebraic equations such as singular linear systems, polynomial GCD and factorizations as well as matrix defective eigenvalue problems.

Abstract:We present a method for the solution of polynomial equations. We do not intend to present one more method among several others, because today there are many excellent methods. Our main aim is educational. Here we attempt to present a method with elementary tools in order to be understood and useful by students and educators. For this reason, we provide a self contained approach. Our method is a variation of the well known method of resultant, that has its origin back to Euler. Our goal, in the present paper, is in the spirit of calculus and secondary school mathematics. An extensive discussion of the theory of zeros of polynomials and extremal problems for polynomials the reader can find in the books 10 and 13 in our references.

Abstract:Endowing the set of functional graphs (FGs) with the sum (disjoint union of graphs) and product (standard direct product on graphs) operations induces on FGs a structure of a commutative semiring R. The operations on R can be naturally extended to the set of univariate polynomials R[X] over R. This paper provides a polynomial time algorithm for deciding if equations of the type AX=B have solutions when A is just a single cycle and B a set of cycles of identical size. We also prove a similar complexity result for some variants of the previous equation.

Abstract:We consider a square non linear parametric equations system F(P,X) = 0 which is constituted of n non differential equations in the n unknowns {x1,...,xn} that are the components of X while P={p1,...,pm} is a set of m parameters that play a role in the definition of the equations F . We assume that P is restricted to lie in a bounded region and we are interested in developing a solver for obtaining all real solutions exactly (a notion that is defined in the paper) for any parameter values within the bounded region. The starting point of the proposed approach is that we assume that a numerical methods has allowed us to determine the real solutions (but not necessarily all of them) for a very limited number of fixed P called the initial solution set . Starting from this set we show that we can create multiple pairs (parameters, solution) and that these pairs may be structured into coherent learning sets that will be used to train multi-layer perceptrons (MLP). The training process is specific: although it still uses a decrease of a loss function its main objective is to maximize the success rate i.e. the number of occurrences, expressed in percentage of number of samples of the training set, for which the Newton scheme, initialized with the MLP prediction, converges toward the expected solution. We then show that for a sufficiently large number of MLPs we may obtain a 100% success rate for all learning sets. The solver is obtained by running a set of local solvers each of which is based on a specific MLP whose prediction may lead to an exact solution of the system. This solver is tested on verification sets i.e. set of samples constituted of parameter values (all different from the samples in the learning set) and all the solutions of the corresponding system. We show that these sets may be automatically generated and that they may also be used in a self-learning process for improving the performance of the solver established from the initial solution set. This approach is illustrated on two engineering problems in robotics and chemistry and it is shown that the solver provides all solutions for any instance of P with a high probability although we cannot guarantee it. The time required to design the final solver is large but the solving time is extremely low so that this approach should be used when the system has to be solved for a sufficient number of occurrences of the P . Furthermore we will show that the computation time required for establishing the solver may be drastically reduced by using a distributed implementation.

Abstract:We are concerned with the arithmetic of solutions to ordinary or partial nonlinear differential equations which are algebraic in the indeterminates and their derivatives. We call these solutions D-algebraic functions, and their equations are algebraic (ordinary or partial) differential equations (ADEs). The general purpose is to find ADEs whose solutions contain specified rational expressions of solutions to given ADEs. For univariate D-algebraic functions, we show how to derive an ADE of smallest possible order. In the multivariate case, we introduce a general algorithm for these computations and derive conclusions on the order bound of the resulting algebraic PDE. Using our accompanying Maple software, we discuss applications in physics, statistics, and symbolic integration.

Abstract:In terms of the solutions of the generalized Riccati equation, a new algebraic method, which contains the terms of radical expression of functions f (xi), is constructed to explore the new exact solutions for nonlinear evolution equations. Being concise and straightforward, the method is applied to nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation, and some new exact solutions of the system are obtained. The method is of important significance in exploring exact solutions for other nonlinear evolution equations.

Concretely, we use that Aichinger's equation characterizes polynomial functions to solve, for arbitrary commutative groups, Ghurye–Olkin's functional equation, Wilson's functional equation, the Kakutani–Nagumo–Walsh functional equation, and a general version of Fréchet's unmixed functional equation.

Abstract:A functional analytic method was developed by E.K.Ifantis in 1987 to prove that certain non-linear ordinary differential equation (ODEs) have a unique power series solution which converges absolutely in a specified disc of the complex plane. In this thesis, we extended this method to certain systems of two non-linear ordinary differential equations.We then applied the result to an nonlinear differential system and obtained the power series solutions.

Abstract:The so-called polynomial equations play an important role both in algebra and in the theory of functional equations. If the unknown functions in the equation are additive, relatively many results are known. However, even in this case, there are a lot of open questions. In some specific cases, according to classical results, the unknown additive functions are homomorphisms, derivations, or linear combinations of these. The question arises as to whether the solutions can be described even if the unknown functions are not assumed to be additive but to be generalized monomials. As a starting point, we will deal with quadratic functions in this paper. We aim to show that quadratic functions that are solutions to certain polynomial equations necessarily have a `special' form. Further, we also present a method to determine these special forms.

Abstract:In this paper, we deduce some hyperstability results for a generalized class of homogeneous Pexiderized functional equations, expressed as ∑ρ∈Γfxρ.y=lf(x)+lg(y), x,y∈M, which is inspired by the concept of Ulam stability. Indeed, we prove that function f that approximately satisfies an equation can, under certain conditions, be considered an exact solution. Domain M is a monoid (semigroup with a neutral element), Γ is a finite subgroup of the automorphisms group of M, l is the cardinality of Γ, and f,g:M→G such that (G,+) denotes an l-cancellative commutative group. We also examine the hyperstability of the given equation in its inhomogeneous version ∑ρ∈Γfxρ.y=lf(x)+lg(y)+ψ(x,y),x,y∈M, where ψ:M×M→G. Additionally, we apply the main results to elucidate the hyperstability of various functional equations with involutions.
