Abstract:In this paper, we review different designs of distributed Raman amplifiers which have been proposed to minimize the signal power profile asymmetry in mid-link optical phase conjugation systems. We demonstrate how the symmetrical signal power profiles along the fiber can be achieved using various distributed Raman amplification techniques in the single-span and more realistic multi-span circumstances. In addition, we show the theoretically predicted results of the Kerr nonlinear product reduction with different Raman techniques in mid-link optical phase conjugator systems, and then in-line/long-haul transmission performance using numerical simulations.

The Effect of Optical Phase Conjugation on Inter- and Intra-Channel Nonlinearities in Ultrahigh-Speed Transmission Systems

Abstract:We demonstrate that all the inter- and intra-channel nonlinear impairments can be eliminated simultaneously by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a power-symmetry system. However, for practical systems without power-symmetry, it is found that the effects of OPC on various nonlinearities are different in the same link. Even some nonlinearities are suppressed and some are enhanced. Therefore, optimizing the transmission link with OPC to suppress the dominant nonlinearity is demanded. By using 1-km-long highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and tuning the pump wavelength near the zero dispersion wavelength of the HNLF, we experimentally generate the phase conjugation of the dispersed ~300 fs pulses. OPC with conversion efficiency of about -16 dB and conversion bandwidth of about 38 nm is obtained.
Phase-locking and coherent power combining of broadband linearly chirped optical waves

Abstract:We propose, analyze and demonstrate the optoelectronic phase-locking of optical waves whose frequencies are chirped continuously and rapidly with time. The optical waves are derived from a common optoelectronic swept-frequency laser based on a semiconductor laser in a negative feedback loop, with a precisely linear frequency chirp of 400 GHz in 2 ms. In contrast to monochromatic waves, a differential delay between two linearly chirped optical waves results in a mutual frequency difference, and an acoustooptic frequency shifter is therefore used to phase-lock the two waves. We demonstrate and characterize homodyne and heterodyne optical phase-locked loops with rapidly chirped waves, and show the ability to precisely control the phase of the chirped optical waveform using a digital electronic oscillator. A loop bandwidth of ~ 60 kHz, and a residual phase error variance of < 0.01 rad(2) between the chirped waves is obtained. Further, we demonstrate the simultaneous phase-locking of two optical paths to a common master waveform, and the ability to electronically control the resultant two-element optical phased array. The results of this work enable coherent power combining of high-power fiber amplifiers-where a rapidly chirping seed laser reduces stimulated Brillouin scattering-and electronic beam steering of chirped optical waves.

Abstract:Abstract Highly coherent frequency combs are of crucial importance for optical synthesis and metrology, spectroscopy, laser ranging, and optical communications. Kerr combs, generated via cascaded nonlinear frequency conversion in a passive optical cavity, typically offer high repetition rates, which is essential for some of these applications. Recently, new ways of generating Kerr combs combining Kerr and Brillouin effects have emerged with the aim of improving some performances, especially in the fiber cavity platform. Direct coherent pumping is replaced by lasing on specific cavity modes, offering easily adjustable repetition rates, and enhanced coherence by Brillouin purification. In this study, such a scheme is implemented and investigated in a non‐reciprocal cavity. Highly coherent combs are demonstrated by finely controlling bi‐chromatic Brillouin lasing and the Kerr comb parameters. A suitable numerical model is introduced to account for the interplay between Brillouin scattering, Kerr effect, and cavity resonant feedback. Quantitative agreements with experiments reveal the importance of the pump lasers detuning in setting the comb's properties, through the mode pulling effect. This phenomenon, along with multi‐mode lasing that impedes the coherence, is not studied in previous fiber‐based demonstrations. These limitations are discussed, and several scaling laws are devised.

Abstract:We conduct numerical and experimental investigations on Kerr comb generation in a nonlinear and non-reciprocal fiber cavity by leveraging both stimulated Brillouin backscattering and cascaded four-wave mixing. By engineering the net cavity dispersion to be either normal or anomalous, we enable the formation of diverse patterns and localized structures in the cavity field. The comb's properties depend crucially on the mismatch between the frequency spacing of the bichromatic pump and the free spectral range of the Brillouin laser cavity in both cases. Particularly, in the anomalous regime, adjusting this parameter yields coherent, stable frequency combs in the modulation instability regime. This allows control and expansion of the spectral bandwidth up to 2 THz in normal dispersion and to 6 THz under anomalous net dispersion. This versatile and easily reconfigurable method holds potential for applications in high-speed communications and microwave synthesis.

Abstract:A novel method is demonstrated to tunably compensate dispersion effect in phase modulated radio over fiber (RoF) links using an optical carrier Brillouin processing technique, which is based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) to control the phase shift of optical carrier in the modulated lightwave signal. Since this phase shift can be dynamically tuned, frequency response can be tunably improved. Both simulation and experimental results show that a uniform frequency response ranging from 1–12 GHz with a fluctuation of less than ±1 dB can be obtained by an optimal phase shift on the optical carrier.

Abstract:Coherent excitation of phonons by optical waves, one of the most important channels for light-matter interactions, provides a promising route for optical manipulation of microscopic acoustic phonons for quantum opto-mechanic and phononic devices. Prior research, such as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in fibers, mainly emphasized phonon amplitude modulation; however, coherent phase control of these phonons has not yet been well explored. Here we experimentally demonstrate a new mechanism to coherently control acoustic phonon phases by a seeded SBS scheme in an optical fiber. Interference between acoustic phonons enables either nearly total transmission or enhanced reflection of optical waves, effectively controlled by phase modulation. This new technique addresses the crucial problem of phase-controlled phonon generation, paving the way for important applications in quantum opto-mechanic and phononic devices.

Abstract:We use numerical simulations to investigate the effects of photodarkening (PD) on pulse compression and coherent combination following chirped-pulse amplification in Yb-doped fiber amplifiers. Even though we increase the pump power to keep the pulse energy constant, PD degrades the pulses due to phase distortions resulting from heating acting already within a pulse as well as to increased self-phase modulation if the fiber length is optimized for the PD-free fiber at beginning of life. By contrast, in a fiber shorter than this, the drop in peak power is a relatively modest 35% even at a PD propagation loss as large as 5 dB, thus providing effective mitigation against PD-induced phase distortions. The improvements extend to the combination efficiency of beam-combined systems.

Abstract:Two photonic crystal fiber (PCF) lasers are phase-locked by using self-imaging resonator techniques. Obvious and steady interference strips are observed even without using spatial filter in high power operation, which demonstrates the advantages of pure single-mode PCF lasers in coherent beam combining. The maximum coherent output power of 95.8W is obtained with coupling efficiency of 90.2%.

Abstract:To reduce the thermal effect to beam quality in solid-state laser with high repetition rate, multimode optical fiber as phase conjugator has been experimentally investigated in an laser diode-pumped, electrooptical Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with double-pass amplifier. The laser was operated on 100 Hz repetition rate and 20 ns pulse width. Perfect correction of laser profile distortion in amplifier and beam quality close to diffraction limit has been achieved. Pulse width of phase-conjugated laser was compressed to 7 ns while compression ratio reached 3:1. Beam glitter has also been observed in lower pumping energy close to stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold. With increase of energy coupled into fiber, that phenomenon was weakened, and higher stability was achieved. In the case of 5.3 mJ input energy, instability less than 14% is obtained, while SBS reflectivity and depolarization ratio were 32.6% and 7% respectively.
Phase-locking Control in All Fiber Link Based on Fiber Coupler

Abstract:A new technique of phase-locking control in all fiber link based on fiber coupler has been proposed. Laser beams backscattered by the fiber tips of the different outgoing fiber laser beams interfere with each other in the fiber couplers. Meanwhile, the outgoing laser beams interfere with the partial local laser beams in the fiber couplers.These interference results provide metrics for phase-locking control algorithm named stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD). Laser beams are then phase-locked on their outgoing fiber tips under such system. Model of such novel phase-locking system for multi-laser-beams is built and steady-state control conditions are discussed. All fiber phase-locking is achieved for two laser beams in our experiment. The two laser beams are collimated and adjusted to overlap and interfere with each other in far field. Interference patterns in far field are collected by high speed camera to judge the control performance. Experimental results show that such technique promotes the fringe visibility of the long-exposure pattern during 10 s from 0.25 in open loop to 0.82 in closed loop, under phase disturb with an amplitude of 4 wavelengths and a frequency of 2 Hz. Fringe visibility of the short exposure pattern rises from 0.65 to 0.98 correspondingly.

Abstract:We investigate coherent Kerr combs generation via Brillouin lasing in a non-reciprocal cavity. This approach offers adjustable repetition rates and enhanced coherence. A numerical model is presented that ac-counts for the interplay between Brillouin scattering, Kerr effect, and cavity resonant feedback. Through quan-titative agreement with experiments, our study highlights the importance of mode-pulling effects in setting the comb's dynamics, which had been overlooked in previous fiber experiments. Finally, we discuss limitations and suggest scaling laws for these systems.
Polarization Influence on Er3+-Doped Multi-Wavelength Brillouin Fiber Laser Based on Fiber Loop Mirror

Abstract:Polarization influences on the performance of multi-wavelength Brillouin Er3+-doped fiber laser are investigated by adjusting the polarization controller (PC) in the fiber loop mirror (FLM), where the linear laser cavity is composed of a fiber-tailed mirror and an FLM, and the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and the Er3+-doped fiber amplification (EDFA) simultaneously serve as the cavity gain. We realized 1–7 Brillouin laser lines by increasing the 980 nm pump power. For the first-order Brillouin laser, the signal–noise ratio (SNR) and optical intensity present a sinusoidal envelope; the conversion efficiency changes significantly from 0.56465 dBm/mw to 0.44975 dBm/mw by adjusting the ring's angle in the PC; the first-order SBS thresholds are 20.4 mw, 36.1 mw and 28.5 mw at different angles θ2 = 36°, 276° and 300°, respectively; flatness between the two Brillouin lasers change obviously from 2.863 dB to 41.801 dB with different ring angles; the second-order Brillouin laser is suppressed and disappears finally at Δθ2 = −64° to −84° and 106°~136° angle variation. For the fifth-order Brillouin laser, the highest-order Brillouin laser line is seriously suppressed until it disappears at some angle variations similarly. The powers and wavelength stabilities for one-, three- and seven-wavelength Brillouin fiber lasers were measured in 1 h, and the obtained Er3+-doped multi-wavelength Brillouin fiber laser (MWBFL) worked stably during that time, but the stabilities become worse with higher SBS orders.

Abstract:We present a technique for coherence transfer of laser light through a branching fiber link, where the optical phase noise induced by environmental perturbations via the fiber link is passively compensated by remote users without the requirements of any active servo components. At each remote site, an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) is simultaneously taken as a frequency distinguisher for distinguishing its unique frequency from other sites’ and as an optical actuator for compensating the phase noise coming from the optical fiber. With this configuration, we incorporate a long outside loop path consisting of a fiber-pigtailed AOM into the loop, enabling the significant reduction of the outside loop phase noise in the passive way. To further address the residual out-of-loop phase noise coming from the interferometer and the two-way optical frequency comparison setup, we design a low-noise active temperature stabilization system. Measurements with a back-to-back system show that the stability in our stabilization system is $2\times 10^{-16}$ at 1 s, reaching $2\times 10^{-20}$ after 10,000s. Adopting these techniques, we demonstrate transfer of a laser light through a branching fiber network with 50 km and 145 km two fiber links. After being compensated for the 145 km fiber link, the relative frequency instability is $3.4\times 10^{-15}$ at the 1 s averaging time and scales down to $3.7\times 10^{-19}$ at the 10,000 s averaging time. This proposed technique is suitable for the simultaneous transfer of an optical signal to a number of independent users within a local area.

Abstract:We discuss recent progress on the use of optical and digital phase conjugation techniques for nonlinearity compensation in optical fiber links. We compare the achievable performance gain of phase conjugated twin wave applied in two polarization states and time segments with mid-link optical phase conjugation and digital back propagation. For multicarrier transmission scheme such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, two recently proposed schemes, namely phase-conjugated pilots and phase-conjugated subcarrier coding are reviewed.
Coherent supercontinuum shaping for multiple wavelength optimization over an octave

Abstract:We shape the spectrum of an octave spanning supercontinuum from an erbium fiber laser. The group delay dispersion is controlled through the temperature profile of a chirped fiber Bragg grating. We demonstrate control of spectral broadening, switching in spectral windows, and optimizing power at six wavelengths corresponding to Yb, Ca, and Sr clock transitions, an f-2f pair, and a C-band reference for frequency transfer applications. We verify locking of the shaped f-2f beat note, and the coherence of the shaped supercontinuum by interference with an unshaped supercontinuum branch with relative frequency deviation of 10-17 at 1 s averaging time.

Abstract:The authors explore in this work an approach to enhance the coherence between two incoherent lasers so as to provide coherent light beams, and proof‐of‐concept demonstrates a terahertz signal generation with low phase noise. Based on the proposed passive phase compensation technique, the phase noise between two independent lasers can be well suppressed and the carrier to noise ratio in the terahertz regime remains high. In the experiment, the beating phase noise between two independent lasers is reduced from −60.68 dBc/Hz@10kHz to −90.05 dBc/Hz@10kHz at about 280 GHz, which is promisingly applicable in the terahertz photonics community. Coherent light beams play an important role in the development of opto‐electronic microwave and terahertz technologies, serving as a source for generating RF carrier signals with very high quality. Abstract:The generation of partially coherent laser beam directly from a spatial-temporal phase modulated opticaal resonator is achieved experimentally.Nd∶YAG rod pumped by krypton lamp working in continuous wave mode is used in the experiment.The phase modulation is fulfilled by an intra-cavity LiNbO_3 electro-optic crystal driven by high voltage.Both the spatial and temporal coherence are weakened by the modulation,and different conditions coursed different impacts on the spatial and temporal coherence.
