Abstract:Analogue gravitational systems are becoming an increasing popular way of studying the behaviour of quantum systems in curved spacetime. Setups based on ultracold quantum gases in particular, have been recently harnessed to explore the thermal nature of Hawking's and Unruh's radiation that was theoretically predicted almost 50 years ago. For solid state implementations, a promising system is graphene, in which a link between the Dirac-like low-energy electronic excitations and relativistic quantum field theories has been unveiled soon after its discovery. Here we show that this link extends to the case of curved quantum field theory when the graphene sheet is shaped in a surface of constant negative curvature, known as Beltrami's pseudosphere. Thanks to large-scale simulations, we provide numerical evidence that energetically stable negative curvature graphene surfaces can be realized; the ratio between the carbon-carbon bond length and the pseudosphere radius is small enough to allow the formation of an horizon; and the associated Local Density Of States evaluated at horizon's proximity has a thermal nature with a characteristic temperature of few tens of Kelvin. Such findings pave the way to the realization of a solid-state system in which the curved spacetime dynamics of quantum many body systems can be investigated.

Abstract:I first recall the uses of Dirac materials as tabletop realizations of high energy physics scenarios. Then I point to a specific system that might reproduce a massless BTZ black hole, where the key role is played by hyperbolic carbon pseudospheres. Finally, some considerations are offered on the possibility to realize rotating black holes, along with some comments on the future of the whole analog gravity enterprise.

Abstract:<p>We obtain analytical solutions to Einstein-Maxwell-scalar gravity with negative cosmological constant in (2+1)-dimensions. The scalar field is non minimally coupled to gravity and electromagnetism by the metric ansatz. We first find analytical solutions to the quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum of a rotating hairy Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole by solving the associated Dirac equation within the framework of the pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics. We also develop an analogue model for this hairy BTZ black hole in graphene, by mapping its conformal counterpart onto the Beltrami pseudosphere. The model offers to make some predictions for the analogue model of the (2+1)-dimensional gravitational black hole in graphene.</p>

Abstract:Since its discovery in 2004, graphene, a two-dimensional hexagonal carbon allotrope, has generated great interest and spurred research activity from materials science to particle physics and vice versa. In particular, graphene has been found to exhibit outstanding electronic and mechanical properties, as well as an unusual low-energy spectrum of Dirac quasiparticles giving rise to a fractional quantum Hall effect when freely suspended and immersed in a magnetic field. One of the most intriguing puzzles of graphene involves the low-temperature conductivity at zero density, a central issue in the design of graphene-based nanoelectronic components. While suspended graphene experiments have shown a trend reminiscent of semiconductors, with rising resistivity at low temperatures, most theories predict a constant or even decreasing resistivity. However, lattice field theory calculations have revealed that suspended graphene is at or near the critical coupling for excitonic gap formation due to strong Coulomb interactions, which suggests a simple and straightforward explanation for the experimental data. In this contribution we review the current status of the field with emphasis on the issue of gap formation, and outline recent progress and future points of contact between condensed matter physics and Lattice QCD.

Constructing Superconductors by Graphene Chern–Simons Wormholes

Abstract:We propose a new model which simulates the motion of free electrons in graphene by the evolution of strings on manifolds. In this model, molecules which constitute sheets of graphene are polygonal point-like structures which build (N+1)-dimensional manifolds. By breaking the gravitational-analogue symmetry of graphene sheets, we show that two separated child sheets and a Chern–Simons bridge are produced giving rise to a wormhole. In this structure, free electrons are transmitted from one child sheet to the other producing superconductivity. An analogue between “effective gravitons” and “Cooper pairs” is found. In principle, this phenomenology provides the possibility to construct superconductor structures by using the analogue of cosmological models.

A main introductory Section, together with the Sections introducing each of the two parts of the manuscript compose the \emph{fil rouge} of the thesis, and are not published elsewhere. They contain reviews (together with my personal view) on the information paradox (Part 1) and the thermodynamics of spacetime (Part 2).

Phase separation in the crust of accreting neutron stars

Abstract:Nucleosynthesis, on the surface of accreting neutron stars, produces a range of chemical elements. We perform molecular dynamics simulations of crystallization to see how this complex composition forms new neutron star crust. We find chemical separation, with the liquid ocean phase greatly enriched in low atomic number elements compared to the solid crust. This phase separation should change many crust properties such as the thermal conductivity and shear modulus. The concentration of carbon, if present, is enriched in the ocean. This may allow unstable thermonuclear burning of the carbon and help explain the ignition of the very energetic explosions known as superbursts.

A Black Hole Conjecture and Rare Decays in Theories with Low Scale Gravity

Abstract:In models with large extra dimensions, where the fundamental gravity scale can be in the electroweak range, gravitational effects in particle physics may be noticeable even at relatively low energies. In this paper, we perform simple estimates of the decays of elementary particles with a black hole intermediate state. Since black holes are believed to violate global symmetries, particle decays can violate lepton and baryon numbers. Whereas previous literature has claimed incompatibility between these rates (e.g. p-decay) and existing experimental bounds, we find suppressed baryon- and lepton-violating rates due to a new conjecture about the nature of the virtual black holes. We assume here that black holes lighter than the (effective) Planck mass must have zero electric and color charge and zero angular momentum—this statement is true in classical general relativity and we make the conjecture that it holds in quantum gravity as well. If true, the rates for proton-decay, neutron–antineutron oscillations, and lepton-violating rare decays are suppressed to below experimental bounds even for large extra dimensions with TeV-scale gravity. Neutron–antineutron oscillations and anomalous decays of muons, τ-leptons, and K- and B-mesons open a promising possibility to observe TeV gravity effects with a minor increase of existing experimental accuracy.

Abstract:Graphene is a new material that exhibits remarkable properties from both fundamental and applied issues. This is a 2D matter system whose physical and mechanical features have been approached by using tight binding model, first principle calculations based on DFT and membrane theory. Graphene as a carbon molecule has also hidden symmetries that motivated extensions in various dimensions such as chain-type configurations, that are frequently observed as the graphene bridge narrowed down to a few- or single-atom width, graphene multi-layers thought of as electric capacitors, doped graphene to gain more physical properties as well as cousin systems such as diamond and hyperdiamond. In this work, we use tight binding model ideas and field theory method as well as the hidden symmetries of the underlying crystals to study physical aspects of 2D graphene and its homologues. We also study the relation between 2D graphene with the Boriçi-Creutz fermions considered recently in literature as an adequate model to perform numerical simulations in 4D lattice QCD where the two Dirac zeros are interpreted in terms of the light quarks up and down.

Black Hole Horizons and their Mechanics

Abstract:Black holes are often characterized by event horizons, following the literature that laid the mathematical foundations of the subject in the 1970s. However black hole event horizons have two fundamental conceptual limitations. First, they are defined only in space-times that admit a future conformal boundary. Second, they are teleological; their formation and growth is not determined by local physics but depends on what could happen in the distant future. Therefore, event horizons have not played much of a role in the recent theoretical advances that were sparked by discoveries of the LIGO-virgo collaborations. This article focuses on quasi-local horizons that have been used instead. Laws governing them -- mechanics of quasi-local horizons -- generalize those that were first found using event horizons. These results, obtained over the last two decades or so, have provided much insight into dynamical predictions of general relativity in the fully nonlinear regime. The article summarizes the deep and multi-faceted interplay between geometry and physics that has emerged. Conceptually, quasi-local horizons also play a key role in the discussion of the quantum evaporation of black holes. However, due to space limitations, this application is only briefly discussed in Section 6.

Turning graphene into a lab for noncommutativity

Abstract:It was recently shown that taking into account the granular structure of graphene lattice, the Dirac-like dynamics of its quasiparticles resists beyond the lowest energy approximation. This can be described in terms of new phase-space variables, $(\vec{X},\vec{P})$, that enjoy generalized Heisenberg algebras. In this letter, we add to that picture the important case of noncommuting $\vec{X}$, for which $[X^i,X^j] = \mathrm{i} \, \theta^{i j}$ and we find that $\theta^{i j} = \ell^2 \, \epsilon^{i j}$, with $\ell$ the lattice spacing. We close by giving both the general recipe and a possible specific kinematic setup for the practical implementation of this approach to test noncommutative theories in tabletop analog experiments on graphene.

Hairy black holes and other compact objects in theories of gravity

Abstract:In the realm of spacetimes governed by Einstein's general relativity and containing only Maxwell's electromagnetic field, stationary black holes are fully characterized by their mass, electric or magnetic charge, and angular momentum -- a property encapsulated in a version of the no-hair theorem. However, the validity of this theorem is contingent on certain assumptions, and when these are relaxed, new solutions describing hairy black holes arise. To date, astronomical observations have not provided concrete evidence of any type of black hole hair. Nevertheless, the development of increasingly precise gravitational wave detectors has sparked renewed interest in hairy black holes. In this thesis, we delve into two approaches to circumvent the no-hair theorem. The first option consists in describing the spacetime metric by an alternative theory of gravitation. We investigate the dynamical stability of hairy black holes in a vacuum spacetime described by the theory of massive bigravity. We show that hairy black holes in bigravity can describe both stellar black holes and supermassive black holes. The second approach is to keep Einstein's equations but to consider a different material content than Maxwell's electromagnetic field. For this we choose the fields of the electroweak theory. In the absence of gravitation, this theory describes magnetic monopoles with infinite mass. General relativity allows for their regularization by concealing their Coulombian singularity within an event horizon. After providing a detailed analysis of the internal structure of monopoles in flat space, we investigate how their properties generalize to the black hole case. Lastly, we study a particular example of soliton -- boson stars -- arising when a complex scalar field is coupled to general relativity. We construct chains of boson stars by solving the elliptic field equations using the finite element method.

Hunting Quantum Gravity with Analogs: the case of High Energy Particle Physics

Abstract:In this review we collect, for the first time in one paper, old and new results and future perspectives of the research line that uses hadron production, in high-energy scattering processes, to experimentally probe fundamental questions of quantum gravity. The key observations, that ignited the link between the two arenas, are the so-called ``color-event horizon'' of quantum chromodynamics, and the enormous (de)accelerations involved in such scattering processes: both phenomena point to the Unruh (and related Hawking) type of effects. After the first pioneering investigations of this, such research went on and on, including studies of the horizon entropy and other ``black-hole thermodynamical'' behaviors, which incidentally are also the frontier of the analog gravity research itself. It is stressed in various places here that the \textit{trait d'union} between the two phenomenologies is that in both scenarios, hadron physics and black hole physics, ``thermal'' behaviors are more easily understood not as due to real thermalization processes (sometimes just impossible, given the small number of particles involved), but rather to a stochastic/quantum entanglement nature of such temperature. Finally, other aspects, such as the self-critical organizations of hadronic matter and of black-holes, have been recently investigated. The results of those investigations are also summarized and commented upon here. As a general remark, this research line shows that indeed we can probe quantum gravity theoretical constructions with analog systems that are not confined to belong only to the condensed matter arena. This is as it must be.

Abstract:Graphene has been considered by many as a revolutionary material with electronic and structural properties that surpass conventional semiconductors and metals. Due to its superlative qualities, graphene is being considered as the reference material for a post-CMOS technology. Furthermore, graphene is also quite unusual electronically since its electric carriers behave as if they were massless and relativistic, the so-called Dirac particles. Because of its exotic electronic properties, theorists are being forced to revisit the conceptual basis for the theory of metals. Hence, graphene seems to be unveiling a new era in science and technology with still unseen consequences.
Experimental studies of black holes: status and future prospects

Abstract:More than a century ago, Albert Einstein presented his general theory of gravitation (GR) to the Prussian Academy of Sciences. One of the predictions of the theory is that not only particles and objects with mass, but also the quanta of light, photons, are tied to the curvature of space-time, and thus to gravity. There must be a critical compactness, above which photons cannot escape. These are black holes (henceforth BH). It took fifty years after the theory was announced before possible candidate objects were identified by observational astronomy. And another fifty years have passed, until we finally have in hand detailed and credible experimental evidence that BHs of 10 to 10^10 times the mass of the Sun exist in the Universe. Three very different experimental techniques, but all based on Michelson interferometry or Fourier-inversion spatial interferometry have enabled the critical experimental breakthroughs. It has now become possible to investigate the space-time structure in the vicinity of the event horizons of BHs. We briefly summarize these interferometric techniques, and discuss the spectacular recent improvements achieved with all three techniques. Finally, we sketch where the path of exploration and inquiry may go on in the next decades.

Abstract:Black holes are the hydrogen atoms of quantum gravity. For instance solving the information loss paradox will likely require a deep understanding of how the long-sought quantum gravity theory works. In this thesis we explore how black holes are modelled and how the quantum structure emerges in the context of string theory. We will mainly limit to four dimensional supersymmetric solutions, considering black holes microstates from three different viewpoints: intersecting string and branes in string theory, supergravity solutions and ground states of the supersymmetric quantum mechanics living on the worldvolume of the branes. Abstract:One of the most dramatic consequences of low-scale (~1 TeV) quantum gravity in models with large or warped extra dimension(s) is copious production of mini black holes at future colliders and in ultra-high-energy cosmic ray collisions. Hawking radiation of these black holes is expected to be constrained mainly to our three-dimensional world and results in rich phenomenology. In this topical review we discuss the current status of astrophysical observations of black holes and selected aspects of mini black hole phenomenology, such as production at colliders and in cosmic rays, black hole decay properties, Hawking radiation as a sensitive probe of the dimensionality of extra space, as well as an exciting possibility of finding new physics in the decays of black holes.

Abstract:Graphene is the first example of truly two-dimensional crystals—it is just one layer of carbon atoms. It turns out to be a gapless semiconductor with unique electronic properties resulting from the fact that charge carriers in graphene demonstrate charge-conjugation symmetry between electrons and holes and possess an internal degree of freedom similar to “chirality” for ultrarelativistic elementary particles. It provides an unexpected bridge between condensed matter physics and quantum electrodynamics (QED). In particular, the relativistic Zitterbewegung leads to the minimum conductivity of the order of conductance quantum e2/h in the limit of zero doping; the concept of Klein paradox (tunneling of relativistic particles) provides an essential insight into electron propagation through potential barriers; vacuum polarization around charge impurities is essential for understanding of high electron mobility in graphene; an index theorem explains the anomalous quantum Hall effect.
