Abstract:A quadrature sub-branch hybrid selection/maximal-ratio combining (QBHS/MRC) scheme for one-dimensional modulations in Rayleigh fading is proposed. At the receiver, N diversity branches are split into 2N in-phase and quadrature sub-branches. Traditional hybrid selection/maximal-ratio combining (H-S/MRC) is then applied over the 2N sub-branches. The symbol error rate (SER) of M-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM), including coherent binary phase shift keying (BPSK), with QBHS/MRC is derived. The mean output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a QBHS/MRC combiner is given. The performances of QBHS/MRC and H-S/MRC are compared. Results show that QBHS/MRC systems outperform traditional H-S/MRC systems.
Beating the standard quantum limit for binary phase-shift-keying discrimination with a realistic hybrid feed-forward receiver

Abstract:We propose a hybrid feed-forward receiver (HFFRE) for the discrimination of binary phase-shift-keyed coherent states based on the appropriate combination of a displacement feed-forward receiver (DFFRE) and a homodynelike setup employing a low-intensity local oscillator and photon-number-resolving detectors. We investigate the performance of the proposed scheme, also addressing realistic scenarios in the presence of nonunit quantum detection efficiency, dark counts, and visibility reduction. The present HFFRE outperforms the DFFRE in all conditions, beating the standard quantum limit in particular regimes.

Abstract:In this Letter, a new, to the best of our knowledge, geometric shaping method for an ultrahigh-order 16384-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16384QAM) constellation based on the delta-sigma modulation technique is proposed. Based on the characteristics of delta-sigma modulation, the constellation was optimized to obtain greater constellation gain and improve the maximum performance of the system. Finally, the proposed scheme was demonstrated on an intensity modulated direct detection (IMDD) system through a 25 km single-mode fiber transmission. On performing experiments, it was found that the suggested approach increases the receiver sensitivity of ultrahigh-order QAM communication systems based on delta-sigma modulation by around 0.5 dB and further enhances the error performance limit. Abstract:In the paper, we concentrate on investigating the effect of imbalances between In-phase(I) and Quadrature-phase(Q) branches in high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) systems with finite resolution. We find that the zero intermediate frequency (zero-IF) receiver can't handle the IQ imbalances even with the full resolution (FR) when the order of QAM is pretty high, e.g. 64, 256. Instead, the digital intermediate frequency (digital-IF) receiver can provide an acceptable performance.

Abstract:Hybrid precoding has been a promising technique in millimeter wave (mmWave) communications, providing a balanced tradeoff between system performance and hardware complexity. Existing hybrid precoding schemes either require full channel state information (CSI) or use codebook-based design, causing large feedback overhead or degraded system performance, respectively. In this paper, we propose a balanced scheme with limited feedback CSI and element-level quantization. Our key idea is to maximize the system sum rate by using an adaptive baseband precoder and an eigenbeam radio frequency (RF) precoder. The adaptive baseband precoder can balance the effective channel gain and the multiuser interference according to the transmitted power. The eigenbeam RF precoder is optimized with only requiring a limited length of feedback vector. Considering the practical constraints on RF precoders, we then propose a quantization algorithm that minimizes the subspace distortion between the optimized eigenbeam RF precoder and the quantized one. The quantization algorithm also works for the case when RF chains are more than users. Extensive simulation results are provided and validate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid precoding scheme.

Abstract:Quantum metrology utilizes nonclassical resources, such as entanglement or squeezed light, to realize sensors whose performance exceeds that afforded by classical-state systems. Environmental loss and noise, however, easily destroy nonclassical resources and, thus, nullify the performance advantages of most quantum-enhanced sensors. Quantum illumination (QI) is different. It is a robust entanglement-enhanced sensing scheme whose 6 dB performance advantage over a coherent-state sensor of the same average transmitted photon number survives the initial entanglement's eradication by loss and noise. Unfortunately, an implementation of the optimum quantum receiver that would reap QI's full performance advantage has remained elusive, owing to its having to deal with a huge number of very noisy optical modes. We show how sum-frequency generation (SFG) can be fruitfully applied to optimum multimode Gaussian-mixed-state discrimination. Applied to QI, our analysis and numerical evaluations demonstrate that our SFG receiver saturates QI's quantum Chernoff bound. Moreover, augmenting our SFG receiver with a feedforward (FF) mechanism pushes its performance to the Helstrom bound in the limit of low signal brightness. The FF-SFG receiver, thus, opens the door to optimum quantum-enhanced imaging, radar detection, state and channel tomography, and communication in practical Gaussian-state situations.

Abstract:We implement the cyclic quantum receiver based on the theoretical proposal of Roy Bondurant and demonstrate experimentally below the shot-noise limit (SNL) discrimination of quadrature phase-shift keying signals (PSK). We also experimentally test the receiver generalized for longer communication alphabet lengths and coherent frequency shift keying (CFSK) encoding. Using off-the-shelf components, we obtain state discrimination error rates that are 3 dB and 4.6 dB below the SNLs of ideal classical receivers for quadrature PSK and CFSK encodings, respectively. The receiver unconditionally surpasses the SNL for M=8 PSK and CFSK. This receiver can be used for the simple and robust practical implementation of quantum-enhanced optical communication.
Design and Analysis of an Iterative Quantum Receiver With Photon-Number-Resolving Detector

Abstract:A new strategy of iterative quantum receivers with photon-number-resolving detectors is proposed to discriminate coherent states. The iterative quantum receiver provides a bit-error rate closer to the Helstrom limit when compared with a recently proposed non-iterative quantum receiver. Moreover, the proposed iterative receiver is robust against various imperfections, such as mode mismatch, non-ideal quantum efficiency and dark counts. The simulation results indicate that the iterative receiver is capable of achieving 2.16 dB improvement upon the standard quantum limit, leaving only 0.65 dB from the Helstrom limit. Besides, with Turbo encoder and decoder, the iterative receiver gives about 1.46 dB improvement over the conventional non-iterative quantum receiver and approaches the equivalent Helstrom limit.

Abstract:An improved joint carrier recovery and adaptive equalization algorithm for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is proposed. It combines a dual-mode adaptive equalization algorithm and an optimal frequency/phase detection algorithm which operate in an optimal four-step sequence. Computer simulation and FPGA implementation demonstrate that this algorithm is robust even under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and is especially suitable for high-order QAM receivers. The algorithm can acquire a carrier frequency offset up to 300 kHz at 256QAM over typical coaxial cable channels.

Abstract:One of the most crucial challenges in quantum communication is the discrimination of the non-orthogonal coherent states approaching the Helstrom limit. In this paper, a soft iterative quantum receiver is derived for discriminating among the coherent states. The receivers employing the iterative strategy for optimizing the feedback measurement are capable of operating closer to the theoretical error probability limit, actuating about 1.05 dB improvement over a recent proposed quantum receiver. The iterative quantum receivers achieve excellent performance despite using a reduced number of feedback measurement steps. Monte Carlo simulations are performed for quantifying the influence of practical quantum-domain impairments. These results suggest that iterative detection offers substantial robustness against many imperfections degrading realistic experimental implementation.

Abstract:Delta-sigma modulation (DSM) has been considered as an effective means to replace the common public radio interface (CPRI) for the implementation of novel mobile fronthaul (MFH) architectures. However, the recent studies paid great attention on the performance optimizations of the delta-sigma modulators, which could help to enhance signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Few of them focus on the improvement of noise immunity. In this paper, we apply three-dimensional (3D) constellations to DSM, thereby improving the noise immunity performance of the ultra-high order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations. Moreover, addressing the huge number of constellation points in the ultra-high order constellations, we propose a novel constellation approach based on 3D-constellation partition. This approach significantly simplifies the transmission system, leading to an 8-fold improvement in processing efficiency. The experimental demonstrations were realized in a 100 GHz photonics-assisted W-band transmission system, indicating that the transmission scheme based on 3D-constellation could obtain an approximate 0.5 dB gain in receiver sensitivity compared to that using 2D-constellation. Verified by the transmission of ultra-high order DSM signals in the 15-km single-mode fiber (SMF) and 2.6-m W-band wireless link, we could achieve 262144-QAM at a rate of 17.5 Gb/s under a simple digital signal processing (DSP).

Abstract:Multiuser multi-input multi-output (MU-MIMO) is a technique that the base station (BS) communicate with several user terminals (UTs) at the same time and the same frequency. It is one of the notable landmarks in 802.11ac, because MU-MIMO is not only promote theoretical rate, but also improve usage rate of network resource in engineering. All UTs use the same time-frequency resource, and the receiver need to detect signals from different users. So the design of the receiver has direct impact on the performance of MU-MIMO systems. Most of MU-MIMO receivers assume that channel state information (CSI) and received signals have infinite resolution in recent years. But in the actual projects, analog to digital converters (ADCs) are applied to transform the received signals from analog domain to digital domain, so there are quantization error. Therefore, the receivers considering quantization need to be designed. Our receiver design is aimed at reducing the adverse effect of quantization, and we propose an algorithm named quantized maximum SINR (QMSINR). The algorithm suppresses quantization error, co-channel interference (CCI) and noise, and increases SINR of users effectively. Traditional algorithms always ignore the quantization error, so QMSINR is better than those algorithms obviously. Through some simulations, we do some comparisons between QMSINR and traditional algorithms. QMSINR has significant advantages in BER performance and complexity.
Quantum enhanced balanced heterodyne readout for differential interferometry

Abstract:Conventional heterodyne readout schemes are now under reconsideration due to the realization of techniques to evade its inherent 3 dB signal-to-noise penalty. The application of high-frequency, spectrally entangled, two-mode squeezed states can further improve the readout sensitivity of audio-band signals. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate quantum-enhanced heterodyne readout of two spatially distinct interferometers with direct optical signal combination, circumventing the 3 dB heterodyne signal-to-noise penalty. Applying a high-frequency, spectrally entangled, two-mode squeezed state, we show further signal-to-noise improvement of an injected audio band signal of 3.5 dB. This technique is applicable for quantum-limited high-precision experiments, with application to searches for quantum gravity, gravitational wave detection and wavelength-multiplexed quantum communication.

Abstract:Optical communication is the standard for high-bandwidth information transfer in today's digital age. The increasing demand for bandwidth has led to the maturation of coherent transceivers that use phase- and amplitude-modulated optical signals to encode more bits of information per transmitted pulse. Such encoding schemes achieve higher information density, but also require more complicated receivers to discriminate the signaling states. In fact, achieving the ultimate limit of optical communication capacity, especially in the low light regime, requires coherent joint detection of multiple pulses. Despite their superiority, such joint detection receivers are not in widespread use because of the difficulty of constructing them in the optical domain. In this work we describe how optomechanical transduction of phase information from coherent optical pulses to superconducting qubit states followed by the execution of trained short-depth variational quantum circuits can perform joint detection of communication codewords with error probabilities that surpass all classical, individual pulse detection receivers. Importantly, we utilize a model of optomechanical transduction that captures non-idealities such as thermal noise and loss in order to understand the transduction performance necessary to achieve a quantum advantage with such a scheme. We also execute the trained variational circuits on an IBM-Q device with the modeled transduced states as input to demonstrate that a quantum advantage is possible even with current levels of quantum computing hardware noise.

Abstract:This paper introduces an innovative quantum-inspired method for beamforming (BF) optimization in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) arrays. The method leverages the simulated bifurcation (SB) algorithm to address the complex combinatorial optimization problem due to the quantized phase configuration. We propose novel encoding techniques for high-bit phase quantization, which are then mapped into Ising spins. This enables efficient construction of the Hamiltonians and subsequent optimization of BF patterns. The results clearly demonstrate that the SB optimizer surpasses traditional schemes such as digital BF, holographic algorithms and genetic algorithms, offering faster convergence and higher solution quality. The impressive capability of the SB optimizer to handle complex BF scenarios, including sidelobe suppression and multiple beams with nulls, is undoubtedly demonstrated through several application cases. These findings strongly suggest that quantum-inspired methods have great potential to advance MIMO techniques in next-generation wireless communication.
