Abstract:We construct a homomorphism $f$ from the braid group $B_{2n+2}$ on $2n+2$ strands to the Steinberg group associated with the Lie type $C_n$ and with integer coefficients. This homomorphism lifts the well-known symplectic representation of the braid groups. We also describe the image and the kernel of $f$.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a non-archimedean local field of residual characteristic $p\neq 2$. Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over $K$, let $\theta$ be an involution of $G$ over $K$, and let $H$ be the connected component of $\theta$-fixed subgroup of $G$ over $K$. By realizing the Steinberg representation of $G$ as the $G$-space of complex smooth harmonic cochains following the idea of Broussous--Courtès, we study its space of distinction by $H$ as a finite dimensional complex vector space. We give an upper bound of the dimension, and under certain conditions, we show that the upper bound is sharp by explicitly constructing a basis using the technique of Poincaré series. Finally, we apply our general theory to the case where $G$ is a general linear group and $H$ a special orthogonal subgroup, which leads to a complete classification result.

Abstract:For each n greater than 7 we explicitly construct a sequence of Stein manifolds diffeomorphic to complex affine space of dimension n so that there is no algorithm to tell us in general whether a given such Stein manifold is symplectomorphic to the first one or not. We prove a similar undecidability result for contact structures on the 2n - 1 dimensional sphere. We can generalize these results by replacing com- plex affine space with any smooth affine variety of dimension n and the 2n - 1 dimensional sphere with any smooth affine variety intersected with a sufficiently large sphere. We prove these theorems by using an invariant called the growth rate of symplectic homology to reduce these problems to an undecidability result for groups.

Classifying Stein's groups

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a comprehensive classification of Stein's groups, which generalize the well-known Higman-Thompson groups. Stein's groups are defined as groups of piecewise linear bijections of an interval with finitely many breakpoints and slopes belonging to specified additive and multiplicative subgroups of the real numbers. Our main result establishes a classification theorem for these groups under the assumptions that the slope group is finitely generated and the additive group has rank at least 2. We achieve this by interpreting Stein's groups as topological full groups of ample groupoids. A central concept in our analysis is the notion of $H^1$-rigidity in the cohomology of groupoids. In the case where the rank of the additive group is 1, we adopt a different approach using attracting elements to impose strong constraints on the classification.

Studying Stein's Groups as Topological Full Groups

Abstract:We include a class of generalisations of Thompson's group $V$ introduced by Melanie Stein into the growing framework of topological full groups. Like $V$, Stein's groups can be described as certain piecewise linear maps with prescribed slopes and nondifferentiable points. Stein's groups include the class of groups where the group of slopes is generated by multiple integers (which we call Stein's integral groups) and when the group of slopes is generated by a single irrational number, such as Cleary's group, (which we call irrational slope Thompson's groups). We give a unifying dynamical proof that whenever the group of slopes is finitely generated, the simple derived subgroup of the associated Stein's groups is finitely generated. We then study the homology of Stein's groups, building on the work of others. This line of inquiry allows us to compute the abelianisations and rational homology concretely for many examples.

A presentation of symplectic Steinberg modules and cohomology of $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z})$

Abstract:Borel-Serre proved that the integral symplectic group $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z})$ is a virtual duality group of dimension $n^2$ and that the symplectic Steinberg module $\operatorname{St}^\omega_n(\mathbb{Q})$ is its dualising module. This module is the top-dimensional homology of the Tits building associated to $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{Q})$. We find a presentation of this Steinberg module and use it to show that the codimension-1 rational cohomology of $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z})$ vanishes for $n \geq 2$, $H^{n^2 -1}(\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z});\mathbb{Q}) \cong 0$. Equivalently, the rational cohomology of the moduli stack $\mathcal{A}_n$ of principally polarised abelian varieties of dimension $2n$ vanishes in the same degree. Our findings suggest a vanishing pattern for high-dimensional cohomology in degree $n^2-i$, similar to the one conjectured by Church-Farb-Putman for special linear groups.

Affine $\imath$quantum groups and Steinberg varieties of type C

Abstract:We provide a geometric realization of the quasi-split affine $\imath$quantum group of type AIII$_{2n-1}^{(\tau)}$ in terms of equivariant K-groups of non-connected Steinberg varieties of type C. This uses a new Drinfeld type presentation of this affine $\imath$quantum group which admits very nontrivial Serre relations. We then construct à la Springer a family of finite-dimensional standard modules and irreducible modules of this $\imath$quantum group, and provide a composition multiplicity formula of the standard modules.

The Weil-Steinberg character of finite classical groups

Abstract:We compute the irreducible constitutents of the product of the Weil character and the Steinberg character in those finite classical groups for which a Weil character is defined, namely the symplectic, unitary and general linear groups. It turns out that this product is multiplicity free for the symplectic and general unitary groups, but not for the general linear groups. As an application we show that the restriction of the Steinberg character of such a group to the subgroup stabilizing a vector in the natural module is multiplicity free. The proof of this result for the unitary groups uses an observation of Brunat, published as an appendix to our paper. As our "Weil character" for the symplectic groups in even characteristic we use the 2-modular Brauer character of the generalized spinor representation. Its product with the Steinberg character is the Brauer character of a projective module. We also determine its indecomposable direct summands.

Abstract:We study the interplay between Steinberg algebras and partial skew rings: For a partial action of a group in a Hausdorff, locally compact, totally disconnected topological space, we realize the associated partial skew group ring as a Steinberg algebra (over the transformation groupoid attached to the partial action). We then apply this realization to characterize diagonal preserving isomorphisms of partial skew group rings, over commutative algebras, in terms of continuous orbit equivalence of the associated partial actions. Finally, we show that any Steinberg algebra, associated to a Hausdorff ample groupoid, can be seen as a partial skew inverse semigroup ring.

Affine vs. Stein in rigid geometry

Abstract:We investigate the relationship between affine and Stein varieties in the context of rigid geometry. We show that the two concepts are much more closely related than in complex geometry, e.g. they are equivalent for surfaces. This rests on the density of algebraic functions in analytic functions. One key ingredient to prove such a density statement is an extension result for Cartier divisors.

Abstract:Embedded symmetry within the Heisenberg group is used to couple geometric insight and analytic calculation to obtain a new sharp Stein–Weiss inequality with mixed homogeneity on the line of duality. SL(2,R) invariance and Riesz potentials define a natural bridge for encoded information that connects distinct geometric structures. The intrinsic character of the Heisenberg group makes it the natural playing field on which to explore the laws of symmetry and the interplay between analysis and geometry on a manifold.

Abstract:In this note, we clarify that the boundary criterion for relative cubulation of the first author and Groves works even when the peripheral subgroups are not one-ended. Specifically, if the boundary criterion is satisfied for a relatively hyperbolic group, we show that, up to taking a refined peripheral structure, the group admits a relatively geometric action on a CAT(0) cube complex. We anticipate that this refinement will be useful for constructing new relative cubulations in a variety of settings.

Tilting sheaves for real groups and Koszul duality

Abstract:For a certain class of real analytic varieties with Lie group actions we develop a theory of (free-monodromic) tilting sheaves, and apply it to flag varieties stratified by real group orbits. For quasi-split real groups, we construct a fully faithful embedding of the category of tilting sheaves to a real analog of the category of Soergel bimodules, establishing real group analogs of Soergel's Structure Theorem and Endomorphism Theorem. We apply these results to give a purely geometric proof of the theorem of Bezrukavnikov and Vilonen which proves Soergel's conjecture for quasi-split groups.

Abstract:We use algebraic arc complexes to prove a homological stability result for symplectic groups with slope 2/3 for rings with finite unitary stable rank. Symplectic groups are here interpreted as the automorphism groups of formed spaces with boundary, which are algebraic analogues of surfaces with boundary, that we also study in the present paper. Our stabilization map is a rank one stabilization in the category of formed spaces with boundary, going through both odd and even symplectic groups.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a generalized complex (GC) Stein manifold and provide complete characterizations in three fundamental aspects. First, we extend Cartan's Theorem A and B within the framework of GC geometry. Next, we define $L$-plurisubharmonic functions and develop an associated $L^2$ theory. This leads to a characterization of GC Stein manifolds using $L$-plurisubharmonic exhaustion functions. Finally, we establish the existence of a proper GH embedding from any GC Stein manifold into $\mathbb{R}^{2n-2k} \times \mathbb{C}^{2k+1}$, where $2n$ and $k$ denote the dimension and type of the GC Stein manifold, respectively. This provides a characterization of GC Stein manifolds via GH embeddings. Several examples of GC Stein manifolds are given.

Abstract:We explore the natural analogues of the Brylinksi condition, Strong Lefschetz condition, and $d\delta$-lemma in Symplectic Geometry originally explored by Brylinksi, Mathieu, Yan, and Guillemin in the Symplectic Lie Algebroid case. The equivalence of the three conditions is re-established as a purely algebraic statement along with a primitive notion of the $d\delta$-lemma established by Tseng, Yau, and Ho. We then apply this algebraic theory to the desired geometric setting to show that these analogues hold, and finally provide a few classes of examples.

Abstract:For a small deformation Phi of a 3-dimensional pseudoconvex embeddable CR-structure of finite type, we prove that Phi defines an embeddable CR-structure if and only if the Szego projection from ker (Phi)partial derivative(b) to ker partial derivative(b) is a Fredholm operator. Relative hyperbolicity and relative quasiconvexity for countable groups

Abstract:We lay the foundations for the study of relatively quasiconvex subgroups of relatively hyperbolic groups. These foundations require that we first work out a coherent theory of countable relatively hyperbolic groups (not necessarily finitely generated). We prove the equivalence of Gromov, Osin, and Bowditch's definitions of relative hyperbolicity for countable groups. We then give several equivalent definitions of relatively quasiconvex subgroups in terms of various natural geometries on a relatively hyperbolic group. We show that each relatively quasiconvex subgroup is itself relatively hyperbolic, and that the intersection of two relatively quasiconvex subgroups is again relatively quasiconvex. In the finitely generated case, we prove that every undistorted subgroup is relatively quasiconvex, and we compute the distortion of a finitely generated relatively quasiconvex subgroup.

Real groups, symmetric varieties and Langlands duality

Abstract:Let $G_\mathbb R$ be a connected real reductive group and let $X$ be the corresponding complex symmetric variety under the Cartan bijection. We construct a canonical equivalence between the relative Satake category of $G(\mathcal O)$-equivariant $\mathbb C$-constructible complexes on the loop space of $X$ and the real Satake category of $G_\mathbb R(\mathcal O_\mathbb R)$-equivariant $\mathbb C$-constructible complexes on the real affine Grassmannian. We show that the equivalence is $t$-exact with respect to the natural perverse $t$-structures and is compatible with the fusion products and Hecke actions. We further show that the relative Satake category is equivalent to the category of $\mathbb C$-constructible complexes on the moduli stack of $G_\mathbb R$-bundles on the real projective line $\mathbb P^1(\mathbb R)$ and hence provides a connection between the relative Langlands program and the geometric Langlands program for real groups. We provide numerous applications of the main theorems to real and relative Langlands duality including the formality and commutativity conjectures for the real and relative Satake categories and an identification of the dual groups for $G_\mathbb R$ and $X$.

On $p$-refined Friedberg-Jacquet integrals and the classical symplectic locus in the $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$ eigenvariety

Abstract:Friedberg--Jacquet proved that if $\pi$ is a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{A})$, $\pi$ is a functorial transfer from $\mathrm{GSpin}_{2n+1}$ if and only if a global zeta integral $Z_H$ over $H = \mathrm{GL}_n \times \mathrm{GL}_n$ is non-vanishing on $\pi$. We conjecture a $p$-refined analogue: that any $P$-parahoric $p$-refinement $\tilde\pi^P$ is a functorial transfer from $\mathrm{GSpin}_{2n+1}$ if and only if a $P$-twisted version of $Z_H$ is non-vanishing on the $\tilde\pi^P$-eigenspace in $\pi$. This twisted $Z_H$ appears in all constructions of $p$-adic $L$-functions via Shalika models. We prove various results towards the conjecture by connecting it to the study of classical symplectic families in the $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$ eigenvariety. If $\pi$ is spherical at $p$, there are $(2n)!$ attached $p$-refinements to Iwahori level; we conjecture the dimensions of such families through each of these, prove the upper bound unconditionally, and (by constructing the families) prove the lower bound under a non-critical slope assumption. For example, for $\mathrm{GL}_4$, we conjecture that (modulo 1-dimensional trivial variation) 8 refinements vary in 2-dimensional symplectic families, 8 in 1-dimensional symplectic families, and prove 8 do not vary in any symplectic family.
