Abstract:Let $(W, S)$ be a Coxeter system of rank $n$ and let $p_{(W, S)}(t)$ be its growth function. It is known that $p_{(W, S)}(q^{-1}) < \infty$ holds for all $n \leq q \in \mathbb{N}$. In this paper we will show that this still holds for $q = n-1$, if $(W, S)$ is $2$-spherical. Moreover, we will prove that $p_{(W, S)}(q^{-1}) = \infty$ holds for $q = n-2$, if the Coxeter diagram of $(W, S)$ is the complete graph. These two results provide a complete characterization of the finiteness of the growth function in the case of $2$-spherical Coxeter systems with complete Coxeter diagram.

On the growth of torsion in the cohomology of some arithmetic groups of $\mathbb{Q}$-rank one

Abstract:Given a number field $F$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{F}$, one can associate to any torsion free subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathcal{O}_{F})$ of finite index a complete Riemannian manifold of finite volume with fibered cusp ends. For natural choices of flat vector bundles on such a manifold, we show that analytic torsion is identified with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification. This is used to obtain exponential growth of torsion in the cohomology for sequences of congruence subgroups.

Abstract:The discrete group generated by reflections of the sphere, or Euclidean space, or hyperbolic space are said to be Coxeter groups of, respectively, spherical, or Euclidean, or hyperbolic type. The hyperbolic Coxeter groups are said to be (quasi-)Lann\'er if the tiles covering the space are of finite volume and all (resp. some of them) are compact. For any Coxeter group stratified by the length of its elements, the Poincar\'e series (a.k.a. growth function) is the generating function of the cardinalities of sets of elements of equal length. Solomon established that, for ANY Coxeter group, its Poincar\'e series is a rational function with zeros somewhere on the unit circle centered at the origin, and gave a recurrence formula. The explicit expression of the Poincar\'e series was known for the spherical and Euclidean Coxeter groups, and 3-generated Coxeter groups, and (with mistakes) Lann\'er groups. Here we give a lucid description of the numerator of the Poincar\'e series of any Coxeter group, and denominators for each (quasi-)Lann\'er group, and review the scene. We give an interpretation of some coefficients of the denominator of the Poincar\'e series. The non-real poles behave as in Enestr\"om's theorem (lie in a narrow annulus) though the coefficients of the denominators do not satisfy theorem's requirements.
Punctual Quot schemes and Cohen--Lenstra series of the cusp singularity

Abstract:The Quot scheme of points $\mathrm{Quot}_{d,n}(X)$ on a variety $X$ over a field $k$ parametrizes quotient sheaves of $\mathcal{O}_X^{\oplus d}$ of zero-dimensional support and length $n$. It is a rank-$d$ generalization of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points. When $X$ is a reduced curve with only the cusp singularity $\{x^2=y^3\}$ and $d\geq 0$ is fixed, the generating series for the motives of $\mathrm{Quot}_{d,n}(X)$ in the Grothendieck ring of varieties is studied via Gröbner bases, and shown to be rational. Moreover, the generating series is computed explicitly when $d\leq 3$. The computational results exhibit surprising patterns (despite the fact that the category of finite length coherent modules over a cusp is wild), which not only enable us to conjecture the exact form of the generating series for all $d$, but also suggest a general functional equation whose $d=1$ case is the classical functional equation of the motivic zeta function known for any Gorenstein curve. As another side of the story, Quot schemes are related to the Cohen--Lenstra series. The Cohen--Lenstra series encodes the count of "commuting matrix points'' (or equivalently, coherent modules of finite length) of a variety over a finite field, about which Huang formuated a "rationality'' conjecture for singular curves. We prove a general formula that expresses the Cohen--Lenstra series in terms of the motives of the (punctual) Quot schemes, which together with our main rationality theorem, provides positive evidence for Huang's conjecture for the cusp.

Abstract:We develop a method of finding a Cox ring of a crepant resolution of a quotient singularity with a torus action and apply it to examples of symplectic quotient singularities in dimension 4. In addition we obtain a bound on the degrees of homogeneous generators of the Cox ring in a more general setup, based on the multigraded Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing.

Abstract:We study systems of $2$-tangle equations which play an important role in the analysis of enzyme actions on DNA strands. We show that every system of framed tangle equations has at most one framed rational solution. Furthermore, we show that the Jones Unknot conjecture implies that if a system of tangle equations has a rational solution then that solution is unique among all $2$-tangles. This result potentially opens a door to a purely topological disproof of the Jones Unknot conjecture. We introduce the notion of the Kauffman bracket ratio $\{T\}_q\in \mathbb Q(q)$ of any $2$-tangle $T$ and we conjecture that for $q=1$ it is the slope of meridionally incompressible surfaces in $D^3-T$. We prove that conjecture for algebraic $T$. We also prove that for rational $T$, the brackets $\{T\}_q$ coincide with the $q$-rationals of Morier-Genoud-Ovsienko. Additionally, we relate systems of tangle equations to the Cosmetic Surgery Conjecture and the Nugatory Crossing Conjecture.

Abstract:We relate the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of open positroid varieties (in particular, their Betti numbers over $\mathbb{C}$ and point counts over $\mathbb{F}_q$) to Khovanov--Rozansky homology of associated links. We deduce that the mixed Hodge polynomials of top-dimensional open positroid varieties are given by rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers. Via the curious Lefschetz property of cluster varieties, this implies the $q,t$-symmetry and unimodality properties of rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers. We show that the $q,t$-symmetry phenomenon is a manifestation of Koszul duality for category $\mathcal{O}$, and discuss relations with open Richardson varieties and extension groups of Verma modules.

Abstract:In 2011, Barot and Marsh provided an explicit construction of presentation of a finite Weyl group $W$ by any quiver mutation-equivalent to an orientation of a Dynkin diagram with Weyl group $W$. The construction was extended by the authors of the present paper to obtain presentations for all affine Coxeter groups, as well as to construct groups from triangulations of unpunctured surfaces and orbifolds, where the groups are invariant under change of triangulation and thus are presented as quotients of numerous distinct Coxeter groups. We extend the construction to include most punctured surfaces and orbifolds, providing a new invariant for almost all marked surfaces.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a cocompact, oriented Fuchsian group which is not on an explicit finite list of possible exceptions and $q$ a sufficiently large prime power not divisible by the order of any non-trivial torsion element of $\Gamma$. Then $|\mathrm{Hom}(\Gamma,\mathrm{GL}_n(q))|\sim c_{q,n} q^{(1-\chi(\Gamma))n^2}$, where $c_{q,n}$ is periodic in $n$. As a function of $q$, $c_{q,n}$ can be expressed as a Puiseux series in $1/q$ whose coefficients are periodic in $n$ and $q$. Moreover, this series is essentially the $q$-expansion of a meromorphic modular form of half-integral weight.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an affine or hyperbolic rank 2 Kac--Moody group over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Let $X=X_{q+1}$ be the Tits building of $G$, the $q+1$--homogeneous tree. Let $\Gamma$ be a nonuniform lattice in $G$. When $\Gamma=P_i^-$, $i=1,2$, the standard parabolic subgroup for the negative $BN$--pair, the quotient graph $P^-_i\backslash X$ is the positive half of the fundamental apartment of $X$, a semi-infinite ray. We define Eisenstein series on $P_1^-\backslash X$. We prove convergence of Eisenstein series in a half space. This uses Iwasawa decomposition of the Haar measure on $G$. A crucial tool is a description of the vertices of $X$ in terms of Iwasawa cells, which we give. We prove meromorphic continuation of Eisenstein series using the Selberg--Bernstein continuation principle. This requires an analog of integral operators on the Tits building and the classical truncation operator for Eisenstein series, which we construct.

Abstract:We prove that the quotients of the group algebra of the braid group introduced by L. Funar in Comm. Math. Phys., 1995, collapses in characteristic distinct from 2. In characteristic 2 we define several quotients of it, which are connected to the classical Hecke and Birman-Wenzl-Murakami quotients, but which admit in addition a symmetry of order 3. We also establish conditions on the possible Markov traces factorizing through it.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field. Consider an odd prime $p$ at which $E$ has good supersingular reduction with $a_p(E)=0$ and which is inert in $K$. Under the assumption that the signed Selmer groups are cotorsion modules over the corresponding Iwasawa algebra, we prove that the Mordell-Weil ranks of $E$ are bounded over any subextensions of the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. Additionally, we provide an asymptotic formula for the growth of the $p$-parts of the Tate-Shafarevich groups of $E$ over these extensions.

Abstract:We study the growth of the Tate-Shafarevich and p-infinity Selmer groups for isogenous abelian varieties in towers of number fields, with an emphasis on elliptic curves. The growth types are usually exponential, as in the setting of `positive mu-invariant' in Iwasawa theory of elliptic curves. The towers we consider are p-adic and l-adic Lie extensions for l<>p, in particular cyclotomic and other Z_l-extensions.
On $q$-deformed cubic equations: the quantum heptagon and nonagon

Abstract:The recent notion of $q$-deformed irrational numbers is characterized by the invariance with respect to the action of the modular group $\PSL(2,\Z)$, or equivalently under the Burau representation of the braid group~$B_3$. The theory of $q$-deformed quadratic irrationals and quadratic equations with integer coefficients is known and entirely based on this invariance. In this paper, we consider the case of cubic irrationals. We show that irreducible cubic equations with three distinct real roots and cyclic Galois group~$C_3$ (or $\Z/3\Z$) acting by a third order element of $\PSL(2,\Z)$, have a canonical $q$-deformation, that we describe. This class of cubic equations contains well-known examples including the equations that describe regular $7$- and $9$-gons.

Abstract:We discuss a matrix of periodic holomorphic functions in the upper and lower half-plane which can be obtained from a factorization of an Andersen-Kashaev state integral of a knot complement with remarkable analytic and asymptotic properties that defines a ${\rm PSL}_2({\mathbb Z})$-cocycle on the space of matrix-valued piecewise analytic functions on the real numbers. We identify the corresponding cocycle with the one coming from the Kashaev invariant of a knot (and its matrix-valued extension) via the refined quantum modularity conjecture of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2111.06645" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.06645">arXiv:2111.06645</a>] and also relate the matrix-valued invariant with the 3D-index of Dimofte-Gaiotto-Gukov. The cocycle also has an analytic extendability property that leads to the notion of a matrix-valued holomorphic quantum modular form. This is a tale of several independent discoveries, both empirical and theoretical, all illustrated by the three simplest hyperbolic knots.

Abstract:$q$-deformed real numbers are power series with integer coefficients. We study Stieltjes and Jacobi type continued fraction expansions of $q$-deformed real numbers and find many new examples of such continued fractions. We also investigate the corresponding sequences of Hankel determinants and find an infinite family of power series for which several of the first sequences of Hankel determinants consist of $-1,0$ and $1$ only. These Hankel sequences satisfy Somos and Gale-Robinson recurrences.

Abstract:We review the relationship between discrete groups of symmetries of Euclidean three-space, constructions in algebraic geometry around Kleinian singularities including versions of Hilbert and Quot schemes, and their relationship to finite-dimensional and affine Lie algebras via the McKay correspondence. We focus on combinatorial aspects, such as the enumeration of certain types of partition-like objects, reviewing in particular a recently developed root-of-unity-substitution calculus. While the most complete results are in type A, we also develop aspects of the theory in type D, and end with some questions about the exceptional type E cases.
