Abstract:We introduce a notion of "local stability in permutations" for finitely generated groups. If a group is sofic and locally stable in our sense, then it is also locally embeddable into finite groups (LEF). Our notion is weaker than the "permutation stability" introduced by Glebsky-Rivera and Arzhantseva-Paunescu, which allows one to upgrade soficity to residual finiteness. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for an amenable group to be locally permutation stable, in terms of invariant random subgroups (IRSs), inspired by a similar criterion for permutation stability due to Becker, Lubotzky and Thom. We apply our criterion to prove that derived subgroups of topological full groups of Cantor minimal subshifts are locally stable, using Zheng's classification of IRSs for these groups. This last result provides continuum-many groups which are locally stable, but not stable.

Abstract:Assume that a finite group G admits a Frobenius group of automorphisms FH with kernel F and complement H such that C_G(F)=1. In this paper, we investigate this situation and prove that if C_G(H) is supersoluble and C_G'(H) is nilpotent, then G is supersoluble. Also, we show that G is a Sylow tower group of a certain type if C_G(H) is a Sylow tower group of the same type.
An analytic version of stable arithmetic regularity

Abstract:We prove a structure theorem for stable functions on amenable groups, which extends the arithmetic regularity lemma for stable subsets of finite groups. Given a group $G$, a function $f\colon G\to [-1,1]$ is called stable if the binary function $f(x\cdot y)$ is stable in the sense of continuous logic. Roughly speaking, our main result says that if $G$ is amenable, then any stable function on $G$ is almost constant on all translates of a unitary Bohr neighborhood in $G$ of bounded complexity. The proof uses ingredients from topological dynamics and continuous model theory. We also prove several applications which generalize results in arithmetic combinatorics to nonabelian groups.

Abstract:In this note we give a new proof of the fact that an elementary subgroup (in the sense of first-order theory) of a non abelian free group $\mathbb{F}$ must be a free factor. The proof is based on definability of orbits of elements of under automorphisms of $\mathbb{F}$ fixing a large enough subset of $\mathbb{F}$.

Abstract:Let K be a henselian valued field with O_K its valuation ring, Γ its value group, and k its residue field. We study the definable subsets of O_K and algebraic groups definable over O_K in the case where k is algebraically closed and Γ is a ℤ-group. We first describe the definable subsets of O_K, showing that every definable subset of O_K is either res-finite or res-cofinite (see Definition ). Applying this result, we show that GL(n, O_K) (the invertible n by n matrices over O_K) are generically stable for each n, generalizing Y. Halevi's result, where K is an algebraically closed valued field .

Abstract:A countable discrete group $\Gamma$ is said to be Frobenius stable if a function from the group that is "almost multiplicative" in the point Frobenius norm topology is "close" to a genuine unitary representation in the same topology. The purpose of this paper is to show that if $\Gamma$ is finitely generated and a non-torsion element of $H^2(\Gamma;\mathbb{Z})$ can be written as a cup product of two elements in $H^1(\Gamma;\mathbb{Z})$ then $\Gamma$ is not Frobenius stable. In general, 2-cohomology does not obstruct Frobenius stability. Some examples are discussed, including Thompson's group $F$ and Houghton's group $H_3$. The argument is sufficiently general to show that the same condition implies non-stability in unnormalized Schatten $p$-norms for $1<p\le\infty$.

On the growth of actions of free products

Abstract:If $G$ is a finitely generated group and $X$ a $G$-set, the growth of the action of $G$ on $X$ is the function that measures the largest cardinality of a ball of radius $n$ in the Schreier graph $\Gamma(G,X)$. In this note we consider the following stability problem: if $G,H$ are finitely generated groups admitting a faithful action of growth bounded above by a function $f$, does the free product $G \ast H$ also admit a faithful action of growth bounded above by $f$? We show that the answer is positive under additional assumptions, and negative in general. In the negative direction, our counter-examples are obtained with $G$ either the commutator subgroup of the topological full group of a minimal and expansive homeomorphism of the Cantor space; or $G$ a Houghton group. In both cases, the group $G$ admits a faithful action of linear growth, and we show that $G\ast H$ admits no faithful action of subquadratic growth provided $H$ is non-trivial. In the positive direction, we describe a class of groups that admit actions of linear growth and is closed under free products and exhibit examples within this class, among which the Grigorchuk group.

Abstract:Let G be an infinite simple group of finite Morley rank and α a supertight automorphism of G so that the fixed point subgroup Pn:=CG(αn) is pseudofinite for all n∈N∖{0} . It is know (using CFSG) that the socle Sn:=Soc(Pn) is a (twisted) Chevalley group over a pseudofinite field. We prove that there is r∈N∖{0} so that for each n we have [Pn:Sn] and that there is no m∈N∖{0} so that for each n the sizes of the Sylow 2-subgroups of Sn are bounded by m . We also note that in the recent identification result of G under the assumption pr2(G)=1 , the use of CFSG is not needed.

Abstract:We show that any non abelian free group $\F$ is strongly $\aleph_0$-homogeneous, i.e. that finite tuples of elements which satisfy the same first-order properties are in the same orbit under $\Aut(\F)$. We give a characterization of elements in finitely generated groups which have the same first-order properties as a primitive element of the free group. We deduce as a consequence that most hyperbolic surface groups are not $\aleph_0$-homogeneous.

Abstract:We show that if $G$ is an amenable group and $A\subseteq G$ has positive upper Banach density, then there is an identity neighborhood $B$ in the Bohr topology on $G$ that is almost contained in $AA^{-1}$ in the sense that $B\backslash AA^{-1}$ has upper Banach density $0$. This generalizes the abelian case (due to Følner) and the countable case (due to Beiglböck, Bergelson, and Fish). The proof is indirectly based on local stable group theory in continuous logic. The main ingredients are Grothendieck's double-limit characterization of relatively weakly compact sets in spaces of continuous functions, along with results of Ellis and Nerurkar on the topological dynamics of weakly almost periodic flows.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of local Hilbert--Schmidt stability, motivated by the recent definition by Bradford of local permutation stability, and give examples of (non-residually finite) groups that are locally Hilbert--Schmidt stable but not Hilbert--Schmidt stable. For amenable groups, we provide a criterion for local Hilbert--Schmidt stability in terms of group characters, by analogy with the character criterion of Hadwin and Shulman for Hilbert--Schmidt stable amenable groups. Furthermore, we study the (very) flexible analogues of local Hilbert--Schmidt stability, and we prove several results analogous to the classical setting. Finally, we prove that infinite sofic, respectively hyperlinear, property (T) groups are never locally permutation stable, respectively locally Hilbert--Schmidt stable. This strengthens the result of Becker and Lubotzky for classical stability, and answers a question of Lubotzky.

Abstract:The main result of this paper is that the outer automorphism group of a free product of finite groups and cyclic groups is semistable at infinity (provided it is one ended) or semistable at each end. In a previous paper, we showed that the group of outer automorphisms of the free product of two nontrivial finite groups with an infinite cyclic group has infinitely many ends, despite being of virtual cohomological dimension two. We also prove that aside from this exception, having virtual cohomological dimension at least two implies the outer automorphism group of a free product of finite and cyclic groups is one ended. As a corollary, the outer automorphism groups of the free product of four finite groups or the free product of a single finite group with a free group of rank two are virtual duality groups of dimension two, in contrast with the above example. Our proof is inspired by methods of Vogtmann, applied to a complex first studied in another guise by Krstić and Vogtmann.

Abstract:Let F be a free group of arbitrary rank and let H be a finitely generated subgroup of F. Given a pseudovariety V of finite groups, i.e. a class of finite groups closed under taking subgroups, quotients and finitary direct products, we endow F with its pro-V topology. Our main result states that it is decidable whether H is pro-Su dense, where Su ⊂ S denote respectively the pseudovarieties of all finite supersolvable groups and all finite solvable groups. Our motivation stems from the following open problem: is it decidable whether H is pro-S dense?

Abstract:We describe the structure of finite groups with $\mathfrak{F}$-subnormal or self-normalizing primary cyclic subgroups when $\mathfrak{F}$ is a subgroup-closed saturate superradical formation containing all nilpotent groups.
