Abstract:The optical refractive index of a moving regular medium is calculated by using the Lorentz transformation in this note. It is shown that in some velocity region of medium moving relative to the initial frame K, the moving medium may possess a negative index of refraction measured by the observer fixed at the frame of reference K.

Abstract:In 1968, Veselago [1] predicted that there could still be propagating waves in a medium that had simultaneously negative permittivity ε and permeability μ, because the product of ε and μ would be positive. However, to ensure energy conservation, he concluded that the refractive index must use the negative square root of the product of ε and μ (i.e., n = εμ). A consequence is certain unusual optical features in negative-index media. The electric field vector E, magnetic field vector H and wave vector k are a left-handed triplet, the basis for calling materials with simultaneously negative ε and μ “left-handed materials” (LHMs). LHMs would have novel optical properties. Light at non-normal incidence would bend to the side opposite that in a normal RHM; positive lenses would become negative; a flat slab could focus. The phase velocity of an electromagnetic wave would be opposite to the direction of energy flux, resulting in a reversed Doppler effect. Photons would have negative momentum and apply tension to the interface upon reflection. Recently, this kind of material has been demonstrated experimentally to exist. Shelby et al. [2] measured the scattering angle of the transmitted beam through a prism manufactured from a composite material consisting of a two-dimensional array of copper wires and split ring resonators and showed that the effective refractive index of the material is negative at microwave frequencies. Recent theoretical studies also showed that some photonic crystals might have negative-refraction properties in the near infrared spectral region [3].

Abstract:A structured composite of the negative index of refraction was fabricated by one layer of cross-I-shaped metal pairs. In this structure, the electric and magnetic inclusions were effectively integrated into one small unit. We varied the spacing of the cross pair to control the location of the magnetic resonance mode and their intercoupling with the electric mode. The frequency dependences of permittivity, permeability, and refractive indices with different gap widths of the pairs were systematically discussed by free-space measurement as well as numerical simulation. A spacing window dependent on the geometrical parameters was found in which the real part of the refractive index could have a negative value. The one-layer cross-pair pattern proposed in this work can be extended to three-dimensional structures with well-controlled interlayer coupling that will greatly facilitate the fabrication and measurement of negative-index materials in high frequencies.

Abstract:In this work the authors proposed a dielectric and metallic composite route to design a negative index material. It was shown that a high-permittivity dielectric geometry could excite a magnetic dipolar resonance mode. Its incorporation with metallic wire resonators would generate the double negative resonance behavior, which gave the negative index. The homogenization ability of extending the composite combination into three dimensional structures was discussed.

Abstract:We show that an electromagnetic (EM) wave undergoes negative refraction at the interface between a positive and negative refractive index material. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations are used to study the time evolution of an EM wave as it hits the interface. The wave is trapped temporarily at the interface and after a long time, the wave front moves eventually in the negative direction. This explains why causality and speed of light are not violated in spite of the negative refraction always present in a negative index material.

Abstract:We show that negative refraction in materials can occur at frequencies $\omega$ where the real parts of the permittivity $\veps(\omega)$ and the permeability $\mu(\omega)$ have different sign, and that light with such frequencies can propagate just as well as light with frequencies where they have equal sign. Therefore, for negative refraction one does not need to be in the ``double-negative'' regime. We consider negative refractive index achiral materials using the Drude-Lorentz model and chiral materials using the Drude-Born-Fedorov model. We find that the time-averaged Poynting vector always points along the wave vector, the time-averaged energy-flux density is always positive, and the time-averaged energy density is positive (negative) when the refractive index is positive (negative). The phase velocity is negative when the real part of the refractive index is negative, and the group velocity generally changes sign several times as a function of frequency near resonance.

Abstract:An optical metamaterial is a composite in which subwavelength features, rather than the constituent materials, control the macroscopic electromagnetic properties of the material. Recently, properly designed metamaterials have garnered much interest because of their unusual interaction with electromagnetic waves. Whereas nature seems to have limits on the type of materials that exist, newly invented metamaterials are not bound by such constraints. These newly accessible electromagnetic properties make these materials an excellent platform for demonstrating unusual optical phenomena and unique applications such as subwavelength imaging and planar lens design. 'Negative-index materials', as first proposed, required the permittivity, epsilon, and permeability, mu, to be simultaneously less than zero, but such materials face limitations. Here, we demonstrate a comparatively low-loss, three-dimensional, all-semiconductor metamaterial that exhibits negative refraction for all incidence angles in the long-wave infrared region and requires only an anisotropic dielectric function with a single resonance. Using reflection and transmission measurements and a comprehensive model of the material, we demonstrate that our material exhibits negative refraction. This is furthermore confirmed through a straightforward beam optics experiment. This work will influence future metamaterial designs and their incorporation into optical semiconductor devices.

Abstract:The demonstration and confirmation of metamaterials with simultaneous negative permittivity and permeability, and thus a negative refractive index, has resulted in a surge of interest in the reflection and refraction phenomena at the interfaces of these so-called negative-index materials (NIMs). We present a systematic study of the Brewster angle, i.e., the angle of incidence at which no reflection occurs, for both TE and TM waves scattering at the interface between two semi-infinite planar media, one of which may be a NIM. Detailed physical explanations that account for the Brewster angle for a plane wave incident upon a NIM are provided under the framework of the Ewald-Oseen extinction theorem, considering the reemission of induced electric and magnetic dipoles. The conditions under which the Brewster angle exists are concisely summarized in a map of different material parameter regimes.

Abstract:In this Letter the expression for the refractive index of de Broglie wave in the presence of a potential field is obtained and based on this, the physical meanings of negative index of refraction is revealed. We demonstrate that the electromagnetic wave propagation in a left-handed medium with negative refractive index behaves just like that of antiphotons, which is required of the complex vector field theory. It is believed that the complex vector field theory is helpful in considering the wave propagation and photonic band gap structure in the left-handed medium photonic crystals with a periodicity in negative and positive index of refraction.

Abstract:The theoretical mechanism for realizing a negative refractive index material in an optical frequency range with an atomic gas system of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is studied. Abstract:We report new experimental results on the generation and dynamics of multiple double layers in front of a positively biased electrode immersed in a DP-machine plasma. Depending on the geometry or the dimensions of the electrode, this complex space charge configuration can appear in two different modes. If the electrode is small with respect to the plasma size, the phenomenon appears as a set of concentric luminous shells with different intensities. If the electrode has large dimensions, or a one-dimensional geometry, the spherical double layers appear adjacent to each other, as equally separated luminous plasma blobs. Our experimental investigations prove that in both of cases we deal with almost the same phenomenon. The same elementary processes, namely electron-neutral impact excitations and ionizations, play the key role in the generation and dynamics of each structure. This is emphasized in the static current-voltage characteristic of the electrode, which shows similar jumps of the current, associated with hysteresis.

Abstract:A new class of artificially structured materials called metamaterials makes it possible to achieve electromagnetic properties that do not exist in nature. In this paper we review the recent progress made in the area of optical metamaterials. It was predicted that nanostructured metamaterials could provide us with artificial magnetic response and negative refractive index at optical frequencies. To date, optical metamagnetics have been already fabricated to demonstrate artificial magnetic response in the infrared and across the entire visible spectrum, while metamaterials showing negative refractive index, also called negative index materials (NIM), have been demonstrated in the infrared and at the border with the visible spectral range. Here we report the results of a sample that displays NIM behavior for red light at a wavelength of 710 nm. This is the shortest wavelength so far at which NIM behavior has been observed for light (excluding a device built on surface plasmon polaritons). We also discuss the fabrication challenges and the impact of fabrication limitations, specifically surface roughness of the fabricated structures on the optical properties of the metamaterials.

Negative refractive index metamaterials from inherently non-magnetic materials for deep infrared to terahertz frequency ranges

Abstract:We present a new set of artificial structures which can exhibit a negative refractive index band in excess of 6% in a broad frequency range from the deep infrared to the terahertz region. The structures are composites of two different kinds of non-overlapping spheres, one made from inherently non-magnetic polaritonic and the other from a Drude-like material. The polaritonic spheres are responsible for the existence of negative effective magnetic permeability whilst the Drude-like spheres are responsible for negative effective electric permittivity. The resulting negative refractive index structures are truly subwavelength structures with wavelength-to-structure ratio 14:1, which is almost 50% higher than has been previously achieved. Our results are explained in the context of the extended Maxwell-Garnett theory and are reproduced by calculations based on the layer Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method, an ab initio multiple scattering theory. The role of absorption in the constituent materials is discussed. Effective medium computer F77 code is freely available at http://www.wave-scattering.com.
Negative refraction in natural ferromagnetic metals

Abstract:It is generally believed that Veselago's criterion for negative refraction cannot be fulfilled in natural materials. However, considering imaginary parts of the permittivity (ε) and permeability (μ) and for metals at not too high frequencies the general condition for negative refraction becomes extremely simple: Re(μ)<0⇒Re(n)<0 and may be fulfilled for such natural ferromagnetic metals as nickel, iron, or cobalt. Here we demonstrate experimentally that in pure cobalt and Fe/Co alloy the negative values of the refractive index can indeed be achieved close to the frequency of the ferromagnetic resonance. Large values of the negative refraction can be obtained at room temperature and they can easily be tuned in moderate magnetic fields.

Abstract:Artificial effective media are attractive because of the fantastic applications they may enable, such as super lensing and electromagnetic invisibility. However, the inevitable loss due to their strongly dispersive nature is one of the fundamental challenges preventing such applications from becoming a reality. In this study, we demonstrate an effective gain medium based on negative resistance, to overcompensate the loss of a conventional passive metamaterial, meanwhile keeping its original negative-index property. Energy conservation-based theory, full-wave simulation and experimental measurement show that a fabricated sample consisting of conventional sub-wavelength building blocks with embedded microwave tunnel diodes exhibits a band-limited Lorentzian dispersion simultaneously with a negative refractive index and a net gain. Our work provides experimental evidence to the assertion that a stable net gain in negative-index gain medium is achievable, proposing a potential solution for the critical challenge current metamateiral technology faces in practical applications.

Abstract:We present a negative index metamaterial architecture based on metal nanoclusters. The nanoclusters support magnetic Mie resonances and exhibit negative permeability, which can be combined with negative permittivity to achieve negative refractive index. We demonstrate two designs using silver nanoclusters with either silver films or silver coated nanowires in optical frequency region. Refractive index of −1 and figure of merit of 2 are achieved by sandwiching nanoclusters between silver films. Our simulations show the flexibility in constructing negative index materials using metal nanoclusters due to their tunable operating frequencies and the freedom in the choice of the material compositions.

Abstract:In this paper, we will review some works on negative index metamaterials in magnetic composites, basically based on our recent works. First, we explore the condition of the existence of negative index meta-materials made of magnetic materials. We will point out that the left-handed materials in the magnetic materials are closely related to the wave polarization and magnetic damping. Then, the layer magnetic structure with negative index of refraction is proposed. We will discuss some factors that affect the negative index of the structure, and give an expression of index of refraction at long wave limitation. Some simulation and experimental results are given. After that, considering the magnetic and electric loss of the materials we propose a new phase diagram for the lossy metamaterials. We will point out that the existence of let-handed material accompany with the single-negative negative index materials, and the loss of let-handed material is always smaller than that of ingle-negative negative index materials. Finally, we will talk about the special characters of magnetic metamateials and their possible applications.

Abstract:Here we re-examine one of the most basic quantities in optics: the refractive index. Considering propagation in a plane, we first develop a general formalism for calculating the direction dependent refractive index in a general bi-anisotropic material. From this we derive the general condition for achieving zero refractive index in a given direction. We show that when the zero-index direction is complex valued the material supports waves that can propagate in only one sense, e.g. in only a clockwise direction. We dub such materials complex axis nihility (CAN) media. Our condition shows that there are an infinite family of both time reversible and time irreversible homogeneous electromagnetic media that support unidirectional propagation for a particular polarization. We give examples showing that scattering from such media results in the complete exclusion of partial waves with one sign of the angular momentum, and that interfaces between such media generally support one-way interface states. As well as giving new sets of material parameters, our simple condition reproduces many of the findings derived using topology, such as unidirectional propagation in gyrotropic media, and spin-momentum locking of evanescent waves.
