Abstract:We present Dependent JavaScript (DJS), a statically typed dialect of the imperative, object-oriented, dynamic language. DJS supports the particularly challenging features such as run-time type-tests, higher-order functions, extensible objects, prototype inheritance, and arrays through a combination of nested refinement types, strong updates to the heap, and heap unrolling to precisely track prototype hierarchies. With our implementation of DJS, we demonstrate that the type system is expressive enough to reason about a variety of tricky idioms found in small examples drawn from several sources, including the popular book JavaScript: The Good Parts and the SunSpider benchmark suite.
The Weight of Predicates: A Dependency Grammar Analysis of Predicate Weight in German

Abstract:When predicate constituents appear in the midfield in German, they must follow their sister constituents. When a midfield cannot be clearly identified, however, as in many matrix V2 clauses, predicate constituents may precede (certain of) their nonpredicate sister constituents. The contrast in serialization possibilities is curious. This paper provides a dependency grammar analysis of the phenomenon. Presenting four principles of word order for German, the analysis concentrates on the dependency grammar understanding of WEIGHT and RISING and how predicate constituents behave with respect to these areas. The relative flatness of dependency structures provides an opportunity for a theory of weight that does not exist for the more layered structures of most constituency grammars. The term RISING refers to discontinuities. When a discontinuity is perceived, the assumption is that rising has occurred. The understanding of predicates builds on the CHAIN concept. The words corresponding to the predicate in the semantics of an utterance always qualify as a chain in the syntax of that utterance.
Coordination and Referential Dependencies: a Dependency Grammar Account in Terms of Predicate-Valent Structures

Abstract:The present paper explores the nexus of coordination and referential dependencies, focusing on sentences such as 'Max and Lucie talked about him', in which it is hardly possible for Max and him to be co-valued. Previous accounts claim that such referential dependencies are in fact possible on a collective reading. It will be demonstrated here, however, that informants consistently judge the co-valued reading in such cases to be either strongly marginal or unavailable, regardless of whether a collective or distributive reading obtains. It is claimed that the manner in which referential dependencies interact with coordinate structures can be addressed insightfully in terms of 'predicate-valent' structures (as opposed to 'predicate-argument structures'). A constraint in this regard will be proposed: the 'Conjunct Referential Dependency Constraint' (CRDC). The CRDC is couched in a Dependency Grammar (DG) approach to syntax.

Abstract:In recent years we have seen several new models of dependent type theory extended with some form of modal necessity operator, including nominal type theory, guarded and clocked type theory, and spatial and cohesive type theory. In this paper we study modal dependent type theory: dependent type theory with an operator satisfying (a dependent version of) the K-axiom of modal logic. We investigate both semantics and syntax. For the semantics, we introduce categories with families with a dependent right adjoint (CwDRA) and show that the examples above can be presented as such. Indeed, we show that any finite limit category with an adjunction of endofunctors gives rise to a CwDRA via the local universe construction. For the syntax, we introduce a dependently typed extension of Fitch-style modal lambda-calculus, show that it can be interpreted in any CwDRA, and build a term model. We extend the syntax and semantics with universes.

Abstract:Graded Type Theory provides a mechanism to track and reason about resource usage in type systems. In this paper, we develop GraD, a novel version of such a graded dependent type system that includes functions, tensor products, additive sums, and a unit type. Since standard operational semantics is resource-agnostic, we develop a heap-based operational semantics and prove a soundness theorem that shows correct accounting of resource usage. Several useful properties, including the standard type soundness theorem, non-interference of irrelevant resources in computation and single pointer property for linear resources, can be derived from this theorem. We hope that our work will provide a base for integrating linearity, irrelevance and dependent types in practical programming languages like Haskell.

Abstract:Haskell, as implemented in the Glasgow Haskell Compiler (GHC), has been adding new type-level programming features for some time. Many of these features---chiefly: generalized algebraic datatypes (GADTs), type families, kind polymorphism, and promoted datatypes---have brought Haskell to the doorstep of dependent types. Many dependently typed programs can even currently be encoded, but often the constructions are painful. In this dissertation, I describe Dependent Haskell, which supports full dependent types via a backward-compatible extension to today's Haskell. An important contribution of this work is an implementation, in GHC, of a portion of Dependent Haskell, with the rest to follow. The features I have implemented are already released, in GHC 8.0. This dissertation contains several practical examples of Dependent Haskell code, a full description of the differences between Dependent Haskell and today's Haskell, a novel type-safe dependently typed lambda-calculus (called Pico) suitable for use as an intermediate language for compiling Dependent Haskell, and a type inference and elaboration algorithm, Bake, that translates Dependent Haskell to type-correct Pico.

Abstract:This paper attempts to analyse the interdependence between generative syntactic theory and pragmatic studies .Three types of meaning are put under study:the contextual anchoring of the indexical ele-ments, the expansion of propositions , and conversational implicature .It is argued that the notion of Conceptual-Intentional Interface articulated in generative syntax offers an account of why the linguistically en -coded meaning can be taken as the basis for the pragmatic inference yielding the expansion of propositions and implicature .The operations of extended functional projection and feature valuation serve as the underlying mechanism that enables the contextual anchoring of the indexical elements .

Abstract:This work proposes a dependent type theory that combines functions and session-typed processes (with value dependencies) through a contextual monad, internalising typed processes in a dependently-typed lambda-calculus. The proposed framework, by allowing session processes to depend on functions and vice-versa, enables us to specify and statically verify protocols where the choice of the next communication action can depend on specific values of received data. Moreover, the type theoretic nature of the framework endows us with the ability to internally describe and prove predicates on process behaviours. Our main results are type soundness of the framework, and a faithful embedding of the functional layer of the calculus within the session-typed layer, showcasing the expressiveness of dependent session types.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to define a partial Propositional Type Theory. Our system is partial in a double sense: the hierarchy of (propositional) types contains partial functions and some expressions of the language, including formulas, may be undefined. The specific interpretation we give to the undefined value is that of Kleene's strong logic of indeterminacy. We present a semantics for the new system and prove that every element of any domain of the hierarchy has a name in the object language. Finally, we provide a proof system and a (constructive) proof of completeness.

DeLaM: A Dependent Layered Modal Type Theory for Meta-programming

Abstract:We scale layered modal type theory to dependent types, introducing DeLaM, dependent layered modal type theory. This type theory is novel in that we have one uniform type theory in which we can not only compose and execute code, but also intensionally analyze the code of types and terms. The latter in particular allows us to write tactics as meta-programs and use regular libraries when writing tactics. DeLaM provides a sound foundation for proof assistants to support type-safe tactic mechanism.

Foundations of Substructural Dependent Type Theory

Abstract:This paper presents preliminary work on a general system for integrating dependent types into substructural type systems such as linear logic and linear type theory. Prior work on this front has generally managed to deliver type systems possessing either syntax or semantics inclusive of certain practical applications, but has struggled to combine these all in one and the same system. Toward resolving this difficulty, I propose a novel categorical interpretation of substructural dependent types, analogous to the use of monoidal categories as models of linear and ordered logic, that encompasses a wide class of mathematical and computational examples. On this basis, I develop a general framework for substructural dependent type theories, and proceed to prove some essential metatheoretic properties thereof. As an application of this framework, I show how it can be used to construct a type theory that satisfactorily addresses the problem of effectively representing cut admissibility for linear sequent calculus in a logical framework.

Abstract:This paper considers the NP vs. DP debate from the perspective of dependency grammar (DG). The message is delivered that given DG assumptions about sentence structure, the traditional NP-analysis of nominal groups is preferable over the DP-analysis. The debate is also considered from the perspective of phrase structure grammar (PSG). While many of the issues discussed here do not directly support NP over DP given PSG assumptions, some do. More importantly, one has to accept the widespread presence of null determiner heads for the DP analysis to be plausible on PSG assumptions. The argument developed at length here is that the traditional NP-analysis of nominal groups is both more accurate and simpler than the DP-analysis, in part because it does not rely on the frequent occurrence of null determiners.

Abstract:Due to the programmatic nature of Minimalism, there are many directions that variations of this formalism can take. This paper demonstrates that one trend in Minimalism is steering toward Dependency Grammar (DG): bare phrase structure, label-less trees, and specifier-less syntax are all aspects/developments of/within Minimalism that are steering toward a dependency-based (as opposed to a constituency based) understanding of syntax and grammar. With this trend in mind, a version of Merge is introduced that completes the development. This version generates dependency-based structures in a strictly left-to-right manner, i.e., in the manner that all natural language is spoken and processed. The particular innovation that makes this concept of Merge possible is the catena. The catena is a novel unit of syntactic analysis that is unique to dependency-based structures. A number of empirical considerations support catena-based left-to-right Merge, e. g., garden path sentences, restrictions on center embeddings, aspects of coordinate structures, subject-auxiliary inversion, the distribution of pronouns, etc.

Abstract:Modality and negation, as two important linguistic features used to realise subjectivity, have been investigated within various disciplines, such as logic, linguistics and philosophy, and law. The interaction between modality and negation, as a relatively new and undeveloped domain, has however not been paid due attention in scholarship. This corpus-based study investigates three aspects of their interaction: the differentiation of the deontic value by negation, the categorization of deontic modality in Hong Kong legislation via negation, and distribution patterns of deontic modality, especially distribution patterns of the negation of modality, in Hong Kong legislation. This study shows that negation is a powerful linguistic mechanism not only for determining the nature and functions of modality, but also for determining the value of modality. This study also reveals that negation helps us to investigate the distribution of deontic modality in Hong Kong legislation and hence revisit the legal framework in Hong Kong. A study taking into account the discursive and professional aspects of the interaction between deontic modality and negation will provide a theoretical basis for the natural language processing of modality and negation in legislation and also offer important implications for the study of negation and modality in general contexts.

Abstract:Hintikka and Sandu originally proposed Independence Friendly Logic (IF) as a first-order logic of imperfect information to describe game-theoretic phenomena underlying the semantics of natural language. The logic allows for expressing independence constraints among quantified variables, in a similar vein to Henkin quantifiers, and has a nice game-theoretic semantics in terms of imperfect information games. However, the IF semantics exhibits some limitations. It treats the players asymmetrically, considering only one of the two players as having imperfect information when evaluating truth, resp., falsity, of a sentence. In addition, the truth and falsity of sentences coincide with the existence of a uniform winning strategy for one of the two players in the semantic imperfect information game. As a consequence, IF does admit undetermined sentences, which are neither true nor false, thus failing the law of excluded middle. In this paper, we investigate an extension of IF, called Alternating Dependence/Independence Friendly Logic (ADIF), tailored to overcome these limitations. To this end, we introduce a novel compositional semantics, generalising the one based on trumps proposed by Hodges for IF. The new semantics (i) allows for meaningfully restricting both players at the same time, (ii) enjoys the property of game-theoretic determinacy, (iii) recovers the law of excluded middle for sentences, and (iv) grants ADIF the full descriptive power of Second Order Logic. We also provide an equivalent Herbrand-Skolem semantics and a game-theoretic semantics for the prenex fragment of ADIF, the latter being defined in terms of a determined infinite-duration game that precisely captures the other two semantics on finite structures.

Abstract:We examine the relationship between Dependence Logic and game logics. A variant of Dynamic Game Logic, called Transition Logic, is developed, and we show that its relationship with Dependence Logic is comparable to the one between First-Order Logic and Dynamic Game Logic discussed by van Benthem. This suggests a new perspective on the interpretation of Dependence Logic formulas, in terms of assertions about reachability in games of im- perfect information against Nature. We then capitalize on this intuition by developing expressively equivalent variants of Dependence Logic in which this interpretation is taken to the foreground.

Abstract:We introduce Probabilistic Dependent Type Systems (PDTS) via a functional language based on a subsystem of intuitionistic type theory including dependent sums and products, which is expanded to include stochastic functions. We provide a sampling-based semantics for the language based on non-deterministic beta reduction. Further, we derive a probabilistic logic from the PDTS introduced as a direct result of the Curry-Howard isomorphism. The probabilistic logic derived is shown to provide a universal representation for finite discrete distributions.

The pragmatic perspective specifies pragmatics as a general cognitive, social, and cultural perspective on linguistic phenomena in relation to their usage in forms of behavior. Adaptation theory describes and analyses language cognitively, socially and culturally. According to this perspective on language and adaptation theory, four aspects are of great importance: context, structure, dynamics and salience. Thus, this article has been intended to probe into the pragmatic perspective briefly.

Abstract:Reasoning over knowledge graphs is traditionally built upon a hierarchy of languages in the Semantic Web Stack. Starting from the Resource Description Framework (RDF) for knowledge graphs, more advanced constructs have been introduced through various syntax extensions to add reasoning capabilities to knowledge graphs. In this paper, we show how standardized semantic web technologies (RDF and its query language SPARQL) can be reproduced in a unified manner with dependent type theory. In addition to providing the basic functionalities of knowledge graphs, dependent types add expressiveness in encoding both entities and queries, explainability in answers to queries through witnesses, and compositionality and automation in the construction of witnesses. Using the Coq proof assistant, we demonstrate how to build and query dependently typed knowledge graphs as a proof of concept for future works in this direction.

Abstract:The paper views pragmatic adaptation through the prism of the communicative and functional theory of translation. It substantiates the applicability of pragmatic adaptation as a translation tactic in translating not only literary but also specialized (non-fiction) texts. The relevance of this research lies in the need to identify linguistic and extralinguistic factors which determine the use of pragmatic adaptation when translating a specialized text in a certain communicative situation. Although some translation studies experts justly consider pragmatic adaptation to be a translation solution applicable at any language level, the authors of this paper share the traditional point of view which sees pragmatic adaptation as a means aimed at solving primarily lexical problems by using various translation operations (addition, omission, generalization, concretization, and substitution). This approach allows the authors to offer their own typology of pragmatic adaptation, which comprises additive, omissive, and substitutive pragmatic adaptation.
