Abstract:Recently experiments showed that nodal structural defects are readily formed in the synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and consequently, SWNTs are likely to deviate from well-defined seamless tubular structures. Here, using graphene-helix growth model, we describe structural details of feasible nodal defects in SWNTs and investigate how mechanical and electronic properties of SWNTs would change in the presence of them using computational methods. Surprisingly atomistic simulations of SWNTs with nodal defects show excellent agreement with previous structural, tensile, and ball-milling experiments whose results cannot be explained using conventional models. The tensile failure of SWNTs with nodal defects requires about four- or six-fold lower strength than pristine ones and these SWNTs are comparatively prone to damage under a lateral compressive biting. We reveal that electronic band-gap of SWNT(12,8) would be remarkably reduced in the presence of nodal defects. This study strongly indicates universality of nodal defects in SWNTs requesting new theoretical framework in SWNT modelling for proper characteristics prediction.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is that single - walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are prone to form nodal structural defects during the synthesis process, which may cause SWNTs to deviate from the ideal seamless tubular structure. Specifically, the paper explores the following points: 1. **Structural characteristics**: The structural details of possible nodal defects in SWNTs are described through the graphene helical growth model. 2. **Changes in mechanical properties**: The influence of nodal defects on the mechanical properties of SWNTs is studied. The experimental results show that the tensile strength and yield strain of SWNTs with nodal defects are significantly lower than those of defect - free SWNTs, which is quite different from the predictions of the traditional seamless SWNT model. 3. **Changes in electronic properties**: Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the influence of nodal defects on the electronic structure of SWNTs is studied. The results show that nodal defects can cause a significant decrease in the electronic band gap of SWNTs, making them more likely to have metallic properties. 4. **Experimental verification**: The paper verifies the existence of nodal defects and their influence on the properties of SWNTs through molecular dynamics simulations and comparison with experimental data. In particular, the mechanical properties of SWNTs with nodal defects are consistent with the low tensile strength and yield strain in previous experimental results, and these results cannot be explained by the traditional seamless SWNT model. In summary, this paper aims to reveal the universality and importance of nodal structural defects in SWNTs through theoretical calculations and experimental verification, and propose a new theoretical framework to more accurately predict the characteristics of SWNTs.
