Abstract:We present some new ideas to derive {\em a priori} second order estiamtes for a wide class of fully nonlinear parabolic equations. Our methods, which produce new existence results for the initial-boundary value problems in $\bfR^n$, are powerful enough to work in general Riemannian manifolds.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to derive a priori second - order estimates for a class of fully nonlinear parabolic equations on Riemannian manifolds. Specifically, the authors focus on the following fully nonlinear parabolic equation in the case of a compact Riemannian manifold \(M^n\) with a smooth boundary \(\partial M\), for a given smooth \((0, 2)\) - tensor \(\chi\) and a smooth symmetric function \(f\):
\[
f(\lambda(\nabla^2 u+\chi)) = e^{u_t}+\psi\quad\text{in }M\times\{t > 0\}
\]
where \(\nabla^2 u\) represents the spatial Hessian matrix of \(u\), \(u_t=\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}\), and \(\lambda(A)=(\lambda_1,\ldots,\lambda_n)\) represents the eigenvalues of the \((0, 2)\) - tensor \(A\).
### Main objective
The main objective of the paper is to establish a priori second - order estimates for the above initial - boundary value problem. Specifically, the authors hope to prove that for an admissible solution \(u\) satisfying certain conditions, there exists a constant \(C\) such that the following estimate holds:
\[
|\nabla^2 u|\leq C\quad\text{in }M\times[0, T]
\]
### Key methods
To achieve this goal, the authors introduce some new ideas and techniques, including:
- **Existence of subsolutions**: Assume that there exists an admissible subsolution \(u\) satisfying certain conditions.
- **Boundary estimates**: Control the second - order derivatives on the boundary by constructing appropriate auxiliary functions and using the maximum principle.
- **Global estimates**: Control the second - order derivatives in the interior region through a refined differential inequality analysis.
### Applications
These estimation results are valid not only on Riemannian manifolds but also in \(\mathbb{R}^n\). Moreover, these results can be used to prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions for certain types of fully nonlinear parabolic equations.
### Main contributions
- **New estimation methods**: Propose new methods to derive a priori second - order estimates, which are applicable not only to \(\mathbb{R}^n\) but also to general Riemannian manifolds.
- **Wide applications**: These estimation results can be applied to a variety of specific fully nonlinear parabolic equations, such as \(f = \sigma_k^{1/k}\) and \(f=\log P_k\) etc.
In summary, the main contribution of this paper lies in providing a systematic method to deal with the a priori estimation problem of a class of fully nonlinear parabolic equations on Riemannian manifolds, which is of great significance for understanding the behavior and properties of the solutions of these equations.
