Abstract:In this paper we study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the path ideals of finite simple graphs. We find new upper bounds for various path ideals of gap free graphs. In particular we prove that the path ideals of gap free and claw graphs have linear minimal free resolutions.

Abstract:By generalizing the notion of the path ideal of a graph, we study some algebraic properties of some path ideals associated to a line graph. We show that the quotient ring of these ideals are always sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and also provide some exact formulas for the projective dimension and the regularity of these ideals. As some consequences, we give some exact formulas for the depth of these ideals.

Abstract:In this article, we give combinatorial formulas for the regularity and the projective dimension of $3$-path ideals of chordal graphs, extending the well-known formulas for the edge ideals of chordal graphs given in terms of the induced matching number and the big height, respectively. As a consequence, we get that the $3$-path ideal of a chordal graph is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if it is unmixed. Additionally, we show that the Alexander dual of the $3$-path ideal of a tree is vertex splittable, thereby resolving the $t=3$ case of a recent conjecture in [Internat. J. Algebra Comput., 33(3):481--498, 2023]. Also, we give examples of chordal graphs where the duals of their $t$-path ideals are not vertex splittable for $t\ge 3$. Furthermore, we extend the formula of the regularity of $3$-path ideals of chordal graphs to all $t$-path ideals of caterpillar graphs. We then provide some families of graphs to show that these formulas for the regularity and the projective dimension cannot be extended to higher $t$-path ideals of chordal graphs (even in the case of trees).

Abstract:In this paper we prove the conjectured upper bound for Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals posed in [23], in the case of chordal graphs. Indeed, we show that the regularity of any chordal graph G is bounded above by the number of maximal cliques of G, denoted by c(G). Moreover, we classify all chordal graphs G for which L(G) = c(G), where L(G) is the sum of the lengths of longest induced paths of connected components of G. We call such graphs strongly interval graphs. Moreover, we show that the regularity of a strongly interval graph G coincides with L(G) as well as c(G).

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite simple graph and let $NI(G)$ denote the closed neighborhood ideal of $G$ in a polynomial ring $R$. We show that if $G$ is a forest, then the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $R/NI(G)$ is the same as the matching number of $G$, thus proving a conjecture of Sharifan and Moradi in the affirmative. We also show that the matching number of $G$ provides a lower bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $R/NI(G)$ for any $G$. Furthermore, we prove that, if $G$ contains a simplicial vertex, then $NI(G)$ admits a Betti splitting, and consequently, we show that the projective dimension of $R/NI(G)$ is also bounded below by the matching number of $G$, if $G$ is a forest or a unicyclic graph.

A New Conjecture and Upper Bound on the Castelnuovo--Mumford Regularity of Binomial Edge Ideals

Abstract:A famous theorem of Kalai and Meshulam is that $\mathrm{reg}(I + J) \leq \mathrm{reg}(I) + \mathrm{reg}(J) -1$ for any squarefree monomial ideals $I$ and $J$. This result was subsequently extended by Herzog to the case where $I$ and $J$ are any monomial ideals. In this paper we conjecture that the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity is subadditive on binomial edge ideals. Specifically, we propose that $\mathrm{reg}(J_{G}) \leq \mathrm{reg}(J_{H_{1}}) + \mathrm{reg}(J_{H_{2}}) -1$ whenever $G$, $H_{1}$, and $H_{2}$ are graphs satisfying $E(G) = E(H_{1}) \cup E(H_{2})$ and $J_{\ast}$ is the associated binomial edge ideal. We prove a special case of this conjecture which strengthens the celebrated theorem of Malayeri--Madani--Kiani that $\mathrm{reg}(J_{G})$ is bounded above by the minimal number of maximal cliques covering the edges of the graph $G$. From this special case we obtain a new upper bound for $\mathrm{reg}(J_{G})$, namely that $\mathrm{reg}(J_{G}) \leq \mathrm{ht}(J_{G}) +1$. Our upper bound gives an analogue of the well-known result that $\mathrm{reg}(I(G)) \leq \mathrm{ht}(I(G)) +1$ where $I(G)$ is the edge ideal of the graph $G$. We additionally prove that this conjecture holds for graphs admitting a combinatorial description for its Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity, that is for closed graphs, bipartite graphs with $J_{G}$ Cohen--Macaulay, and block graphs. Finally, we give examples to show that our new upper bound is incomparable with Malayeri--Madani--Kiani's upper bound for $\mathrm{reg}(J_{G})$ given by the size of a maximal clique disjoint set of edges.

Regularity of powers of path ideals of line graphs

Abstract:Let $L_n$ be a line graph with $n$ vertices and let $I$ be its $t$-path ideal. It is shown that $I^s$ has a linear resolution for some $s\geq 1$ (or equivalently for all $s\geq 1$) if and only if $I^s$ has linear quotients for some $s\geq 1$ (or equivalently for all $s\geq 1$) if and only if $t\leq n\leq 2t$. In addition, we present an explicit formula for the regularity of $I^s$ for all $s\geq 1$. It turns out it is linear in $s$ from the very beginning.

Abstract:Since the introduction of binomial edge ideals $J_{G}$ by Herzog et al. and independently Ohtani, there has been significant interest in relating algebraic invariants of the binomial edge ideal with combinatorial invariants of the underlying graph $G$. Here, we take up a question considered by Herzog and Rinaldo regarding Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of block graphs. To this end, we introduce a new invariant $\nu(G)$ associated to any simple graph $G$, defined as the size of a particularly nice induced maximal matching of $\text{in}_{\text{lex}}(J_{G})$. We investigate the question of expressing $\nu(G)$ in terms of the combinatorics of $G$. We prove that $\nu(G)$ is the maximal total length of a certain collection of induced paths within $G$. We prove that for any graph $G$, $\nu(G) \leq \text{reg}(J_{G})-1$, and that the length of a longest induced path of $G$ is less than or equal to $\nu(G)$; this refines an inequality of Matsuda and Murai. We then investigate the question: when is $\nu(G) = \text{reg}(J_{G})-1$? We prove that equality holds when $G$ is closed; this gives a new characterization of a result of Ene and Zarojanu, and when $G$ is bipartite and $J_{G}$ is Cohen-Macaulay; this gives a new characterization of a result of Jayanathan and Kumar. For a block graph $G$ we prove that $\nu(G)$ admits a combinatorial characterization independent of any auxiliary choices, and we prove that $\nu(G) = \text{reg}(J_{G})-1$. This gives $\text{reg}(J_{G})$ a combinatorial interpretation for block graphs, and thus answers the question of Herzog and Rinaldo.

Abstract:We define Leavitt path algebras of hypergraphs generalizing simultaneously Leavitt path algebras of finitely separated graphs and Leavitt path algebras of row-finite vertex-weighted graphs. We find linear bases for those algebras, compute their Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, obtain some results on ring-theoretic properties like simplicity, von Neumann regularity and Noetherianess and investigate their K-theory and graded K-theory. By doing so we obtain new results on the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension and graded K-theory of Leavitt path algebras of separated graphs and on the graded K-theory of weighted Leavitt path algebras.

Abstract:The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Jacobian algebra and of the graded module of derivations associated to a general curve arrangement in the complex projective plane are studied. The key result is an addition-deletion type result, similar to results obtained by H. Schenck, H. Terao, S. Tohaneanu and M. Yoshinaga, but in which no quasi homogeneity assumption is needed.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a gapfree graph and let $I(G)$ be its edge ideal. An open conjecture of Nevo and Peeva states that $I(G)^q$ has a linear resolution for $q\gg 0$. We investigate a stronger conjecture that if $I(G)^q$ has linear quotients for some integer $q$, then $I(G)^{q+1}$ also has linear quotients. We give a partial solution to this conjecture. It is known that if $G$ does not contain a cricket, a diamond, or a $C_4$, then $I(G)^q$ has a linear resolution for $q \geq 2$. We construct a family of gapfree graphs $G$ containing cricket, diamond, $C_4$ and $C_5$ as induced subgraphs of $G$ for which $I(G)^q$ has linear quotients for $q \ge 2$.

Minimal Cellular Resolutions of Path Ideals

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the path ideals of both paths and cycles have minimal cellular resolutions. Specifically, these minimal free resolutions coincide with the Barile-Macchia resolutions for paths, and their generalized counterparts for cycles. Furthermore, we identify edge ideals of cycles as a class of ideals that lack a minimal Barile-Macchia resolution, yet have a minimal generalized Barile-Macchia resolution.

Powers of facet ideals of simplicial trees

Abstract:In this article, we study the linearity of the minimal free resolution of powers of facets ideals of simplicial trees. We give a complete characterization of simplicial trees for which (some) power of its facet ideal has a linear resolution. We calculate the regularity of the $t$-path ideal of a perfect rooted tree. We also obtain an upper bound for the regularity of the $t$-path ideal of a rooted tree. We give a procedure to calculate the regularity of powers of facet ideals of simplicial trees. As a consequence of this result, we study the regularity of powers of $t$-path ideals of rooted trees. We pose a regularity upper bound conjecture for facet ideals of simplicial trees, which is as follows: if $\Delta$ is a $d$-dimensional simplicial tree, then $\reg(I(\Delta)^s) \leq (d+1)(s-1)+\reg(I(\Delta))$ for all $s \geq 1$. We prove this conjecture for some special classes of simplicial trees.

The $\mathrm{v}$-number and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of cover ideals of graphs

Abstract:The $\mathrm{v}$-number of a graded ideal $I\subseteq R$, denoted by $\mathrm{v}(I)$, is the minimum degree of a polynomial $f$ for which $I:f$ is a prime ideal. Jaramillo and Villarreal (J Combin Theory Ser A 177:105310, 2021) studied the $\mathrm{v}$-number of edge ideals. In this paper, we study the $\mathrm{v}$-number of the cover ideal $J(G)$ of a graph $G$. The main result shows that $\mathrm{v}(J(G))\leq \mathrm{reg}(R/J(G))$ for any simple graph $G$, which is quite surprising because, for the case of edge ideals, this inequality does not hold. Our main result relates $\mathrm{v}(J(G))$ with the Cohen-Macaulay property of $R/I(G)$. We provide an infinite class of connected graphs, which satisfy $\mathrm{v}(J(G))=\mathrm{reg}(R/J(G))$. Also, we show that for every positive integer $k$, there exists a connected graph $G_k$ such that $\mathrm{reg}(R/J(G_k))-\mathrm{v}(J(G_k))=k$. Also, we explicitly compute the $\mathrm{v}$-number of cover ideals of cycles.

Variants of the Gyàrfàs-Sumner Conjecture: Oriented Trees and Rainbow Paths

Abstract:Given a finite family $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs, we say that a graph $G$ is "$\mathcal{F}$-free" if $G$ does not contain any graph in $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. A vertex-colored graph $H$ is called "rainbow" if no two vertices of $H$ have the same color. Given an integer $s$ and a finite family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, let $\ell(s,\mathcal{F})$ denote the smallest integer such that any properly vertex-colored $\mathcal{F}$-free graph $G$ having $\chi(G)\geq\ell(s,\mathcal{F})$ contains an induced rainbow path on $s$ vertices. Scott and Seymour showed that $\ell(s,K)$ exists for every complete graph $K$. A conjecture of N. R. Aravind states that $\ell(s,C_3)=s$. The upper bound on $\ell(s,C_3)$ that can be obtained using the methods of Scott and Seymour setting $K=C_3$ are, however, super-exponential. Gyárfás and Sárközy showed that $\ell(s,\{C_3,C_4\})=\mathcal{O}\big((2s)^{2s}\big)$. For $r\geq 2$, we show that $\ell(s,K_{2,r})\leq (r-1)(s-1)(s-2)/2+s$ and therefore, $\ell(s,C_4)\leq\frac{s^2-s+2}{2}$. This significantly improves Gyárfás and Sárközy's bound and also covers a bigger class of graphs. We adapt our proof to achieve much stronger upper bounds for graphs of higher girth: we prove that $\ell(s,\{C_3,C_4,\ldots,C_{g-1}\})\leq s^{1+\frac{4}{g-4}}$, where $g\geq 5$. Moreover, in each case, our results imply the existence of at least $s!/2$ distinct induced rainbow paths on $s$ vertices. Along the way, we obtain some results on related problems on oriented graphs. For $r\geq 2$, let $\mathcal{B}_r$ denote the orientations of $K_{2,r}$ in which one vertex has out-degree or in-degree $r$. We show that every $\mathcal{B}_r$-free oriented graph $G$ having $\chi(G)\geq (r-1)(s-1)(s-2)+2s+1$ and every bikernel-perfect oriented graph $G$ with girth $g\geq 5$ having $\chi(G)\geq 2s^{1+\frac{4}{g-4}}$ contains every $s$ vertex oriented tree as an induced subgraph.

Abstract:International Journal of Algebra and Computation, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we study the powers of the generalized binomial edge ideal [math] of a path graph [math]. We explicitly compute their regularities and determine the limit of their depths. We also show that these ordinary powers coincide with their symbolic powers. Additionally, we study the Rees algebra and the special fiber ring of [math] utilizing Sagbi basis theory. In particular, we obtain precise formulas for the regularity of these blowup algebras.

The regularity of almost all edge ideals

Abstract:A fruitful contemporary paradigm in graph theory is that almost all graphs that do not contain a certain subgraph have common structural characteristics. The "almost" is crucial, without it there is no structure. In this paper we transfer this paradigm to commutative algebra and make use of deep graph theoretic results. A key tool are the critical graphs introduced by Balogh and Butterfield. We consider edge ideals $I_G$ of graphs and their Betti numbers. The numbers of the form $\beta_{i,2i+2}$ constitute the "main diagonal" of the Betti table. It is well known that any Betti number $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)$ below (or equivalently, to the left of) this diagonal is always zero. We identify a certain "parabola" inside the Betti table and call parabolic Betti numbers the entries of the Betti table bounded on the left by the main diagonal and on the right by this parabola. Let $\beta_{i,j}$ be a parabolic Betti number on the $r$-th row of the Betti table, for $r\ge3$. Our main results state that almost all graphs $G$ with $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ can be partitioned into $r-2$ cliques and one independent set, and in particular for almost all graphs $G$ with $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ the regularity of $I_G$ is $r-1$.

Abstract:Let $J_G$ be the binomial edge ideal of a graph $G$. We characterize all graphs whose binomial edge ideals, as well as their initial ideals, have regularity $3$. Consequently we characterize all graphs $G$ such that $J_G$ is extremal Gorenstein. Indeed, these characterizations are consequences of an explicit formula we obtain for the regularity of the binomial edge ideal of the join product of two graphs. Finally, by using our regularity formula, we discuss some open problems in the literature. In particular we disprove a conjecture in \cite{CDI} on the regularity of weakly closed graphs.
