Abstract:For the water waves equations, the existence of splat singularities has been shown in [3], i.e., the interface self-intersects along an arc in finite time. The aim of this paper is to show the absence of splat singularities for the incompressible fluid dynamics in porous media.

Abstract:We study the Muskat problem on the half-plane, which models motion of an interface between two fluids of distinct densities (e.g., oil and water) in a porous medium (e.g., an aquifer) that sits atop an impermeable layer (e.g., bedrock). Existence of finite time stable regime interface curve singularities is still open on the whole plane, but we show that they do arise on the half-plane, including from arbitrarily small smooth initial data. To obtain this result, we establish maximum principles for both the potential energy and the slope of solutions in this model, as well as develop a general local well-posedness theory in the companion paper [25].

Abstract:We prove local well-posedness for the Muskat problem on the half-plane, which models motion of an interface between two fluids of distinct densities (e.g., oil and water) in a porous medium (e.g., an aquifer) that sits atop an impermeable layer (e.g., bedrock). Our result allows for the interface to touch the bottom, and hence applies to the important scenario of the heavier fluid invading a region occupied by the lighter fluid along the impermeable layer. We use this result in the companion paper [43] to prove existence of finite time stable regime singularities in this model, including for arbitrarily small initial data. We do not require the interface and its derivatives to vanish at $\pm\infty$ or be periodic, and even allow it to be $O(|x|^{1-})$, which is an optimal bound on the power of growth. We also extend our results to the cases of the Muskat problem on the whole plane and on horizontal strips, where almost all previous works did impose such limiting requirements.

Abstract:In this paper for either the sharp front Surface Quasi-Geostrophic equation or the Muskat problem we rule out the "splash singularity" blow-up scenario; in other words we prove that the contours evolving from either of these systems can not intersect at a single point while the free boundary remains smooth. Splash singularities have been shown to hold for the free boundary incompressible Euler equation in the form of the water waves contour evolution problem \cite{ADCPJ}. Our result confirms the numerical simulations in \cite{CFMR} where it is shown that the curvature blows up due to the contours collapsing at a point. Here we prove that maintaining control of the curvature will remove the possibility of pointwise interphase collapse. Another conclusion that we provide is a better understanding of the work \cite{DP3} in which squirt singularities are ruled out; here a positive volume of fluid between the contours can not be ejected in finite time.

Abstract:We study the Muskat problem for one fluid in an arbitrary dimension, bounded below by a flat bed and above by a free boundary given as a graph. In addition to a fixed uniform gravitational field, the fluid is acted upon by a generic force field in the bulk and an external pressure on the free boundary, both of which are posited to be in traveling wave form. We prove that, for sufficiently small force and pressure data in Sobolev spaces, there exists a locally unique traveling wave solution in Sobolev-type spaces. The free boundary of the traveling wave solutions is either periodic or asymptotically flat at spatial infinity. Moreover, we prove that small periodic traveling wave solutions induced by external pressure only are asymptotically stable. These results provide the first class of nontrivial stable solutions for the problem.

Finite-time singularity formation for angled-crested water waves

Abstract:We show that the water waves system is locally wellposed in weighted Sobolev spaces which allow for interfaces with corners. No symmetry assumptions are required. These singular points are not rigid: if the initial interface exhibits a corner, it remains a corner but generically its angle changes. Using a characterization of the asymptotic behavior of the fluid near a corner that follows from our a priori energy estimates, we show the existence of initial data in these spaces for which the fluid becomes singular in finite time.

We establish, for a class of large and monotone initial data, the global existence of weak solutions. Abstract:We consider the one-phase Muskat problem modeling the dynamics of the free boundary of a single fluid in porous media. In the stable regime, we prove local well-posedness for fluid interfaces that are general curves and can have singularities. In particular, the free boundary can have acute angle corners or cusps. Moreover, we show that isolated corners/cusps on the interface must be rigid, meaning the angle of the corner is preserved for a finite time, there is no rotation at the tip, the particle at the tip remains at the tip and the velocity of that particle at the tip points vertically downward.

Abstract:In this paper, the existence of finite-time splash singularity is proved for the free-boundary problem of the viscous and non-resistive incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in $ \mathbb{R}^{3}$, based on a construction of a sequence of initial data alongside delicate estimates of the solutions. The result and analysis in this paper generalize those by Coutand and Shkoller in [14, Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré C Anal. Non Linéaire, 2019] from the viscous surface waves to the viscous conducting fluids with magnetic effects for which non-trivial magnetic fields may present on the free boundary. The arguments in this paper also hold for any space dimension $d\ge 2$.

Our work is inspired by the recent interesting results in [13, 14, 15]. As far as we know, this is the first global large solution for a class of relatively general class of large data.

Abstract:We study classical solutions of one dimensional rotating shallow water system which plays an important role in geophysical fluid dynamics. The main results contain two contrasting aspects. First, when the solution crosses certain threshold, we prove finite-time singularity formation for the classical solutions by studying the weighted gradients of Riemann invariants and utilizing conservation of physical energy. In fact, the singularity formation will take place for a large class of ${C}^1$ initial data whose gradients and physical energy can be arbitrarily small and higher order derivatives should be large. Second, when the initial data have constant potential vorticity, global existence of small classical solutions is established via studying an equivalent form of a quasilinear Klein-Gordon equation satisfying certain null conditions. In this global existence result, the smallness condition is in terms of the higher order Sobolev norms of the initial data.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the existence of smooth initial data for the two-dimensional free boundary incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations, for which the interface remains regular but collapses into a splash singularity (self-intersects in at least one point) in finite time. The existence of the splash singularities is guaranteed by a local existence theorem, in which we need suitable spaces for the modified magnetic field and modification of the velocity and the pressure such that the modified initial velocity is zero, and a stability result which allows us to construct a class of initial velocities and domains for an arbitrary initial magnetic field. It turns out that the presence of the magnetic field does not prevent the viscous fluid to form splash singularities for certain smooth initial data.

Abstract:We prove high-frequency modulational instability of small-amplitude Stokes waves in deep water under longitudinal perturbations, providing the first isola of unstable eigenvalues branching off from $\mathtt{i}\frac34$. Unlike the finite depth case this is a degenerate problem and the real part of the unstable eigenvalues has a much smaller size than in finite depth. By a symplectic version of Kato theory we reduce to search the eigenvalues of a $2\times 2$ Hamiltonian and reversible matrix which has eigenvalues with non-zero real part if and only if a certain analytic function is not identically zero. In deep water we prove that the Taylor coefficients up to order three of this function vanish, but not the fourth-order one.

Abstract:We consider equations of the type: \[\partial_t \omega = \omega R(\omega),\] for general linear operators $R$ in any spatial dimension. We prove that such equations almost always exhibit finite-time singularities for smooth and localized solutions. Singularities can even form in settings where solutions dissipate an energy. Such equations arise naturally as models in various physical settings such as inviscid and complex fluids.

Abstract:Chemotactic singularity formation in the context of the Patlak-Keller-Segel equation is an extensively studied phenomenon. In recent years, it has been shown that the presence of fluid advection can arrest the singularity formation given that the fluid flow possesses mixing or diffusion enhancing properties and its amplitude is sufficiently strong - this effect is conjectured to hold for more general classes of nonlinear PDEs. In this paper, we consider the Patlak-Keller-Segel equation coupled with a fluid flow that obeys Darcy's law for incompressible porous media via buoyancy force. We prove that in contrast with passive advection, this active fluid coupling is capable of suppressing singularity formation at arbitrary small coupling strength: namely, the system always has globally regular solutions.

Abstract:We derive several kinetic equations to model the large scale, low Fresnel number behavior of the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation with a rapidly fluctuating random potential. There are three types of kinetic equations the longitudinal, the transverse and the longitudinal with friction. For these nonlinear kinetic equations we address two problems: the rate of dispersion and the singularity formation. For the problem of dispersion, we show that the kinetic equations of the longitudinal type produce the cubic-in-time law, that the transverse type produce the quadratic-in-time law and that the one with friction produces the linear-in-time law for the variance prior to any singularity. For the problem of singularity, we show that the singularity and blow-up conditions in the transverse case remain the same as those for the homogeneous NLS equation with critical or supercritical self-focusing nonlinearity, but they have changed in the longitudinal case and in the frictional case due to the evolution of the Hamiltonian.
