Abstract:The definition of nearby star systems is incomplete without an understanding of the dynamical interaction between the stars and ambient interstellar material. The Sun itself has been immersed in the Local Bubble interior void for millions of years, and entered the outflow of interstellar material from the Scorpius-Centaurus Association within the past $\sim10^5$ years. Heliosphere dimensions have been relatively large during this period. A subset of nearby stars have similar recent histories, and astrosphere properties are predictable providing ambient interstellar matter and stellar activity cycles are understood. The properties of astrospheres can be used to probe the interstellar medium, and in turn outer planets are more frequently immersed in raw interstellar material than inner planets.

Abstract:It is known that near‐Earth objects (NEOs) during their orbital evolution may often undergo close approaches to the Sun. Indeed it is estimated that up to ∼70 per cent of them end their orbital evolution colliding with the Sun. Starting from the present orbital properties, it is possible to compute the most likely past evolution for every NEO, and to trace its distance from the Sun. We find that a large fraction of the population may have experienced in the past frequent close approaches, and thus, as a consequence, a considerable Sun‐driven heating, not trivially correlated to the present orbits. The detailed dynamical behaviour, the rotational and the thermal properties of NEOs determine the exact amount of the resulting heating due to the Sun. In the present paper, we discuss the general features of the process, providing estimates of the surface temperature reached by NEOs during their evolution. Moreover, we investigate the effects of this process on meteor‐size bodies, analysing possible differences with the NEO population. We also discuss some possible effects of the heating which can be observed through remote sensing by ground‐based surveys or space missions.

A Catalogue of Close Encounter Pairs

Abstract:We provide a catalogue of pairs of stars whose periapses are less than 1pc within the past or future 100 Myr. We use astrometric data from TGAS, Hipparcos and radial velocity data from RAVE and XHIP to find the space motions and hence the initial conditions of 229, 441 stars in Galactic coordinates. We simulate the orbits of these stars and focus on the time, distance and velocity at periastron for 8149 pairs using the k-d tree algorithm to find nearest neighbors. We find an anisotropy in the directions of encounter pairs caused by the solar apex motion, indicating a role of peculiar motion imposing an anisotropic tidal force on planetary systems. We call this effect "kinematic tide". Among the encounter pairs there are 4 encounters with the Solar System with periapses less than 1 pc and 96 pairs with periapses less than 0.1 pc. We also find 577 close encounters of stars which host planetary systems and/or debris disks. We discuss a range of uses for an encounter catalogue and present an example of how the time-varying network of stellar motions will be crucial for efficient interstellar travel between planetary systems. Direct low-energy trajectories to Near-Earth Objects

Abstract:Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) are asteroids, comets and meteoroids in heliocentric orbits with perihelion below 1.3 au. Similarly to the population of the Main Asteroid Belt, NEOs are primordial bodies and their study can improve our understanding of the origins of the Solar System. With a catalog of over 30~000 known asteroids and approximately 100 listed short-period comets, the NEO population represents an inventory of exploration targets reachable with significantly lower cost than the objects of the Main Asteroid Belt. In addition, the materials present in these bodies could be used to resupply spacecraft en route to other destinations. The trajectories of past missions to NEOs have been designed with the patched-conics technique supplemented by impulsive and/or low-thrust maneuvers and planetary gravity assist. The transfer times range from some months to a few years, and the close-approach speeds relative to the target have been as high as 10 km/s. The design technique described in this work leverages the invariant structures of the circular restricted three-body problem (CR3BP) to connect the vicinity of the Earth with NEOs in low-eccentricity, low-inclination orbits. The fundamental building blocks are periodic orbits around the collinear points L$_1$ and L$_2$ of the Sun-Earth CR3BP. These orbits are used to generate paths that follow the associated hyperbolic invariant manifolds, exit the sphere of influence of the Earth and reach NEOs on nearby orbits. The strategy is simple, can be applied to depart either a libration point orbit or the vicinity of the Earth, and offers attractive performance features.

Abstract:We introduce here in the current research the revisiting of approach to the dynamics of Sun center relative to barycenter of Solar system by using self-resulting photo-gravitational force of the Sun as the main reason of such motion. In case of slowly moving in the direction outwards with respect to the initial position of barycenter of Solar system (together with the current position of Solar system barycenter, of course) with average established velocity not less than 1050 Km/day, we should especially note that hierarchical configuration of Solar system will be preferably the same during this motion. As the main findings, we have suggested algorithm how to move towards stars using Solar self-resulting photo-gravitational force. The obvious physically reasonable assumption is that the Solar system will have been increasing its size during the evolution in a future (due to losses of the total angular momentum taking into account the tidal phenomena).

Abstract:Astrophysical evidence suggests that the Sun was born near 5 kpc from the Galactic center, within the corotation radius of the Galactic bar, around 6-7 kpc. This presents challenges for outward migration due to the Jacobi energy constraint, preventing stars from easily overcoming the corotation barrier. In this study, we use test particle simulations to explore two possible migration pathways for the Sun: a "trapped" scenario, where the Sun's orbit was influenced by a slowing Galactic bar, and an "untrapped" scenario driven by dynamic spiral arms. Our results demonstrate that both mechanisms can explain how the Sun migrated from its birth radius (approximately 5 kpc) to its current orbital radius around 8.5-9 kpc. Furthermore, we investigate the environmental changes experienced by the Sun along these migration pathways, focusing on variations in radiation hazards and comet fluxes, which may have impacted planetary habitability. These findings highlight the dynamic nature of galactic habitability, emphasizing that the path a star takes within the Milky Way can significantly affect its surrounding environment and the potential for life. We propose a new concept of "Galactic habitable orbits," which accounts for evolving galactic structures and their effects on stellar and planetary systems. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the solar system's migration and its implications for habitability within the Milky Way.

Abstract:In the latest Gaia third data release, one can find extremely small proper motion components for the star HD\,7977. This, together with the radial velocity measurement lead to the conclusion that this star passed very close to the Sun in the recent past. Such a very close approach of a one solar mass star must have resulted in noticeable changes in the motion of all Solar System bodies, especially those on less tight orbits, namely long-period comets (LPCs) and transneptunian objects (TNOs). We estimate and discuss these effects. Our current knowledge on the solar neighbourhood found in the latest Gaia catalogues allowed us to perform numerical integrations and prepare a list of potential stellar perturbers of LPCs. We used this list, made available in the StePPeD database. To study the past motion of LPCs under the simultaneous action of the Galactic potential and passing stars, we used precise original cometary orbits taken from the current CODE catalogue. We examined the reliability of the extremely small proper motion of HD\,7977 and conclude that this star can be an unresolved binary; however, according to the astrometry covering more than a century, the current Gaia data cannot be ruled out. We present the parameters of a very close passage of this star near the Sun. We also show examples of the strong influence of this passage on the past motion of some LPCs. We also discuss the possible influence of this perturber on other Solar System bodies. It is possible that 2.47 Myr ago the one solar mass star HD\,7977 passed as close as 1000 au from the Sun. Such an event constitutes a kind of dynamical horizon for all studies of the past Solar System bodies' dynamics.

Passing Stars as an Important Driver of Paleoclimate and the Solar System's Orbital Evolution

Abstract:Reconstructions of the paleoclimate indicate that ancient climatic fluctuations on Earth are often correlated with variations in its orbital elements. However, the chaos inherent in the solar system's orbital evolution prevents numerical simulations from confidently predicting Earth's past orbital evolution beyond 50–100 Myr. Gravitational interactions among the Sun's planets and asteroids are believed to set this limiting time horizon, but most prior works approximate the solar system as an isolated system and neglect our surrounding Galaxy. Here we present simulations that include the Sun's nearby stellar population, and we find that close-passing field stars alter our entire planetary system's orbital evolution via their gravitational perturbations on the giant planets. This shortens the timespan over which Earth's orbital evolution can be definitively known by a further ∼10%. In particular, in simulations that include an exceptionally close passage of the Sun-like star HD 7977 2.8 Myr ago, new sequences of Earth's orbital evolution become possible in epochs before ∼50 Myr ago, which includes the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum. Thus, simulations predicting Earth's past orbital evolution before ∼50 Myr ago must consider the additional uncertainty from passing stars, which can open new regimes of past orbital evolution not seen in previous modeling efforts.

Galactic and stellar perturbations of long period comet motion -- Practical considerations

Abstract:Context. Due to our increasing knowledge on the Galactic and stellar neighborhood of the Solar System, modern long-period comet motion studies have to take into account both stellar perturbations and the overall Galactic potential. Aims. Our aim is to propose algorithms and methods to perform numerical integration of a Solar System small body equations of motion much faster and at the same time with greater precision. Methods. We propose a new formulation of the equations of motion formulated in the Solar System barycentric frame but accurately accounting for the differential perturbations caused by the Galactic potential. To use these equations effectively we provide numerical ephemerides of the Galactic positions of the Sun and a set of potential stellar perturbers. Results. The proposed methods offer the precision higher by several orders of magnitude and simultaneously greatly reduce the necessary CPU time. The application of this approach is presented with the example of a detailed dynamical study of the past motion of comet C/2015 XY1.

Past the outer rim, into the unknown: structures beyond the Kuiper Cliff

Abstract:Although the present-day orbital distribution of minor bodies that go around the Sun between the orbit of Neptune and the Kuiper Cliff is well understood, past ~50 au from the Sun, our vision gets blurred as objects become fainter and fainter and their orbital periods span several centuries. Deep imaging using the largest telescopes can overcome the first issue but the problems derived from the second one are better addressed using data analysis techniques. Here, we make use of the heliocentric range and range-rate of the known Kuiper belt objects and their uncertainties to identify structures in orbital parameter space beyond the Kuiper Cliff. The distribution in heliocentric range there closely resembles that of the outer main asteroid belt with a gap at 70 au that may signal the existence of a dynamical analogue of the Jupiter family comets. Outliers in the distribution of mutual nodal distances suggest that a massive perturber is present beyond the heliopause.

Abstract:The cross section for the reaction $^{39}\vec{\rm K}(e,e'p)^{38}$Ar is computed, and the dependence of the FSI on the initial polarization angles of the nucleus $^{39}$K is analyzed. The results are explained in a semi-classical picture of the reaction. This procedure allows us to find the best initial kinematical conditions for minimizing the FSI.

Abstract:Comet 39P/Oterma is known to make fast transitions between heliocentric orbits outside the orbit of Jupiter and heliocentric orbits inside that of Jupiter. In this paper, the dynamics of comet Oterma is modelled and fitted in the Planar Elliptic RTBP. Using the computations presented in Duarte(Celest. Mech. Dyn. Astron 136:26, 2024), we look for the invariant objects around and , which in the case of the Planar Elliptic RTBP is invariant tori and their stable and unstable manifolds that are the skeleton that guides Oterma in its rapid transition.

Nearby Supernova and Cloud Crossing Effects on the Orbits of Small Bodies in the Solar System

Abstract:Supernova (SN) blasts envelop many surrounding stellar systems, transferring kinetic energy to small bodies in the systems. Geologic evidence from 60 Fe points to recent nearby SN activity within the past several Myr. Here, we model the transfer of energy and resulting orbital changes from these SN blasts to the Oort Cloud, the Kuiper Belt, and Saturn's Phoebe ring. For the Oort Cloud, an impulse approximation shows that a 50 pc SN can eject approximately half of all objects less than 1 cm while altering the trajectories of larger ones, depending on their orbital parameters. For stars closest to SNe, objects up to ∼100 m can be ejected. Turning to the explored solar system, we find that SNe closer than 50 pc may affect Saturn's Phoebe ring and can sweep away Kuiper Belt dust. It is also possible that the passage of the solar system through a dense interstellar cloud could have a similar effect; a numerical trajectory simulation shows that the location of the dust grains and the direction of the wind (from an SN or interstellar cloud) has a significant impact on whether or not the grains will become unbound from their orbit in the Kuiper Belt. Overall, nearby SNe sweep micron-sized dust from the solar system, though whether the grains are ultimately cast toward the Sun or altogether ejected depends on various factors. Evidence of SN-modified dust grain trajectories may be observed by New Horizons, though further modeling efforts are required.

Trajectory of the stellar flyby that shaped the outer solar system

Abstract:Unlike the Solar System planets, thousands of smaller bodies beyond Neptune orbit the Sun on eccentric ($e >$ 0.1) and ($i>$ 3$^\circ$) orbits. While migration of the giant planets during the early stages of Solar System evolution can induce substantial scattering of trans-Neptunian objects (TNO), this process cannot account for the small number of distant TNOs ($r_p >$ 60 au) outside the planets' reach. The alternative scenario of the close flyby of another star can instead produce all these TNO features simultaneously, but the possible parameter space for such an encounter is vast. Here, we compare observed TNO properties with thousands of flyby simulations to determine the specific properties of a flyby that reproduces all the different dynamical TNO populations, their location and their relative abundance and find that a 0.8$^{+0.1}_{-0.1}$ $M_{\odot}$ star passing at a distance of $ r_p =$ 110 $\mathbf{\pm}$ 10 au, inclined by $i$ = 70$^\circ$ $^{+5}_{-10}$ gives a near-perfect match. This flyby also replicates the retrograde TNO population, which has proved difficult to explain. Such a flyby is reasonably frequent; at least 140 million solar-type stars in the Milky Way are likely to have experienced a similar one. In light of these results, we predict that the upcoming Vera Rubin telescope will reveal that distant and retrograde TNOs are relatively common.

Abstract:This paper aims to develop a semi-analytical method of propagating orbital motion near the equatorial plane of an asteroid, considering the combined effects of the asteroid's oblateness (the C-20 term), the solar radiation pressure (SRP) and the asteroid's orbital eccentricity around the Sun (e(s)). In the asteroid-centered frame, the Hamiltonian of the orbital motion is derived with Poincare variables. It is firstly averaged over the orbital motion around the asteroid and then averaged over the asteroid's eccentric orbital motion around the Sun. Time-explicit analytical solutions of the orbital eccentricity and inclination are obtained. The Lie transformation is applied to recover the eliminated oscillating terms of the inclination during the second average for a complete solution. We analyze the validity of these solutions for different semi-major axes and different values of area-to-mass ratios (A/m). We demonstrate the importance of considering the asteroid's orbital eccentricity around the Sun and its role in enlarging the amplitude of orbital eccentricity for different Alm and orbital geometries. The solutions developed in this paper improve the knowledge of secular orbital evolution around asteroid. OB Stars in the Solar Neighborhood I: Analysis of their Spatial Distribution

Abstract:We present a newly-developed, three-dimensional spatial classification method, designed to analyze the spatial distribution of early type stars within the 1 kpc sphere around the Sun. We propose a distribution model formed by two intersecting disks -the Gould Belt (GB) and the Local Galactic Disk (LGD)- defined by their fundamental geometric parameters. Then, using a sample of about 550 stars of spectral types earlier than B6 and luminosity classes between III and V, with precise photometric distances of less than 1 kpc, we estimate for some spectral groups the parameters of our model, as well as single membership probabilities of GB and LGD stars, thus drawing a picture of the spatial distribution of young stars in the vicinity of the Sun.

Future trajectories of the Solar System: dynamical simulations of stellar encounters within 100 au

Abstract:Given the inexorable increase in the Sun's luminosity, Earth will exit the habitable zone in ~1 Gyr. There is a negligible chance that Earth's orbit will change during that time through internal Solar System dynamics. However, there is a ~1% chance per Gyr that a star will pass within 100 au of the Sun. Here, we use N-body simulations to evaluate the possible evolutionary pathways of the planets under the perturbation from a close stellar passage. We find a ~92% chance that all eight planets will survive on orbits similar to their current ones if a star passes within 100 au of the Sun. Yet a passing star may disrupt the Solar System, by directly perturbing the planets' orbits or by triggering a dynamical instability. Mercury is the most fragile, with a destruction rate (usually via collision with the Sun) higher than that of the four giant planets combined. The most probable destructive pathways for Earth are to undergo a giant impact (with the Moon or Venus) or to collide with the Sun. Each planet may find itself on a very different orbit than its present-day one, in some cases with high eccentricities or inclinations. There is a small chance that Earth could end up on a more distant (colder) orbit, through re-shuffling of the system's orbital architecture, ejection into interstellar space (or into the Oort cloud), or capture by the passing star. We quantify plausible outcomes for the post-flyby Solar System.
