Abstract:In complex dynamics, the boundaries of higher dimensional hyperbolic components in holomorphic families of polynomials or rational maps are mysterious objects, whose topological and analytic properties are fundamental problems. In this paper, we show that in some typical families of polynomials (i.e. algebraic varieties defined by periodic critical relations), the boundary of a capture hyperbolic component ℋ is homeomorphic to the sphere S^2_ℂ(ℋ)-1. Furthermore, we establish an unexpected identity for the Hausdorff dimension of ∂ℋ: H.dim(∂ℋ) = 2 _ℂ(ℋ)-2+max_f∈∂ℋH.dim(∂ A^J(f)), where A^J(f) is the union of the bounded attracting Fatou components of f associated with the free critical points in the Julia set J(f). In the proof, some new results with independent interests are discovered.
A compactness theorem for hyperkaehler 4-manifolds with boundary

Abstract:In this paper, we study the compactness of a boundary value problem for hyperkaehler 4-manifolds. We show that under certain topological conditions and the positive mean curvature condition on the boundary, a sequence of hyperkaehler triples converges smoothly up to diffeomorphisms if and only if their restrictions to the boundary converge smoothly up to diffeomorphisms. We also generalize this result to torsion-free hypersymplectic triples.

Abstract:The study of counting point-hyperplane incidences in the $d$-dimensional space was initiated in the 1990's by Chazelle and became one of the central problems in discrete geometry. It has interesting connections to many other topics, such as additive combinatorics and theoretical computer science. Assuming a standard non-degeneracy condition, i.e., that no $s$ points are contained in the intersection of $s$ hyperplanes, the currently best known upper bound on the number of incidences of $m$ points and $n$ hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is $$O_{d, s}((mn)^{1-1/(d+1)}+m+n).$$ This bound by Apfelbaum and Sharir is based on geometrical space partitioning techniques, which apply only over the real numbers.

Abstract:LetX be a complex subspace of a complex spaceY. We show that hyperbolic imbeddedness ofX inY is characterized by relative compactness in the compact-open topology of certain spaces of continuous extensions of holomorphic maps from the punctured diskD* toX and fromM -A toX whereM is a complex manifold andA is a divisor onM with normal crossings. We apply these characterizations to obtain generalizations and extensions of theorems of Kobayashi, Kiernan, Kwack, Noguchi and Vitali forD and for higher dimensions. Relative compactness ofX inY is not assumed.

Abstract:It is a classical theorem that if a function on the unit circle is integrable, then it is the nontangential limit of a holomorphic function on the open disc (subject to a certain growth condition) if and only if its Fourier coefficients for nonnegative integers are zero. In this article we generalize this result to higher complex dimensions by proving that for an integrable function on the unit sphere, it is a "boundary trace" of a holomorphic function on the open unit ball if and only if two particular families of integral equations are satisfied. To do this, we use the theory of Hardy spaces as well as the invariant Poisson and Cauchy integrals.

Abstract:We show that various classical theorems of real/complex linear incidence geometry, such as the theorems of Pappus, Desargues, Möbius, and so on, can be interpreted as special cases of a single "master theorem" that involves an arbitrary tiling of a closed oriented surface by quadrilateral tiles. This yields a general mechanism for producing new incidence theorems and generalizing the known ones.

Abstract:A hyperbolic 0-metric on a surface with boundary is a hyperbolic metric on its interior, exhibiting the boundary behavior of the standard metric on the Poincaré disk. Consider the infinite-dimensional Teichmüller spaces of hyperbolic 0-metrics on oriented surfaces with boundary, up to diffeomorphisms fixing the boundary and homotopic to the identity. We show that these spaces have natural symplectic structures, depending only on the choice of an invariant metric on . We prove that these Teichmüller spaces are Hamiltonian Virasoro spaces for the action of the universal cover of the group of diffeomorphisms of the boundary. We give an explicit formula for the Hill potential on the boundary defining the moment map. Furthermore, using Fenchel–Nielsen parameters we prove a Wolpert formula for the symplectic form, leading to global Darboux coordinates on the Teichmüller space.

Abstract:For any geodesic metric space $X$, we give a complete cohomological characterisation of the hyperbolicity of $X$ in terms of vanishing of its second $\ell^{\infty}$-cohomology. We extend this result to the relative setting of $X$ with a collection of uniformly hyperbolic subgraphs. As an application, we give a cohomological characterisation of acylindrical hyperbolicity.

Abstract:In this note, we extend the Bridgeman-Kahn identity to all finite-volume orientable hyperbolic $n$-manifolds with totally geodesic boundary. In the compact case, Bridgeman and Kahn are able to express the manifold's volume as the sum of a function over only the orthospectrum. For manifolds with non-compact boundary, our extension adds terms corresponding to intrinsic invariants of boundary cusps.

Abstract:A polygonal surface in the pseudo-hyperbolic space H^(2,n) is a complete maximal surface bounded by a lightlike polygon in the Einstein universe Ein^(1,n) with finitely many vertices. In this article, we give several characterizations of them. Polygonal surfaces are characterized by finiteness of their total curvature and by asymptotic flatness. They have parabolic type and polynomial quartic differential. Our result relies on a comparison between three ideal boundaries associated with a maximal surface, corresponding to three distinct distances naturally defined on the maximal surface.

Incidences with Pfaffian Curves and Functions

Abstract:We introduce a new approach for studying incidences with non-algebraic curves in the plane. This approach is based on the concepts of Pfaffian curves and Pfaffian functions, as defined by Khovanskii. We derive incidence bounds for curves that are defined with exponentials, logarithms, trigonometric functions, integration, and more. Our bound for incidences with Pfaffian curves matches a classical bound of Pach and Sharir for incidences with algebraic curves, up to polylogarithmic factors.

Low-lying resonances for infinite-area hyperbolic surfaces with long closed geodesics

Abstract:We consider sequences $(X_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of coverings of convex cocompact hyperbolic surfaces $X$ with Euler characterictic $\chi(X_n)$ tending to $-\infty$ as $n\to \infty.$ We prove that for $n$ large enough, each $X_n$ has an abundance of "low-lying" resonances, provided the length of the shortest closed geodesic on $X_n$ grows sufficiently fast. When applied to congruence covers we obtain a bound that improves upon a result of Jakobson, Naud, and the author in \cite{JNS}. Our proof uses the wave 0-trace formula of Guillopé--Zworski \cite{GZ99} together with specifically tailored test-functions with rapidly decaying Fourier transform.

Partially Hyperbolic Compact Complex Manifolds

Abstract:We propose and investigate two types, the latter with two variants, of notions of partial hyperbolicity accounting for several classes of compact complex manifolds behaving hyperbolically in certain directions, defined by a vector subbundle of the holomorphic tangent bundle, but not necessarily in the other directions. We study several classes of examples, prove implications among these notions, give a sufficient criterion for the existence of an Ahlfors current and a sufficient criterion for partial hyperbolicity in terms of the signs of two curvature-like objects introduced recently by the second-named author.

Abstract:Let $f$ be a transcendental entire function of finite order which has an attracting periodic point $z_0$ of period at least $2$. Suppose that the set of singularities of the inverse of $f$ is finite and contained in the component $U$ of the Fatou set that contains $z_0$. Under an additional hypothesis we show that the intersection of $\partial U$ with the escaping set of $f$ has Hausdorff dimension $1$. The additional hypothesis is satisfied for example if $f$ has the form $f(z)=\int_0^z p(t)e^{q(t)}dt+c$ with polynomials $p$ and $q$ and a constant $c$. This generalizes a result of Barański, Karpińska and Zdunik dealing with the case $f(z)=\lambda e^z$.

On the Boundary Complex of the K-Cauchy-fueter Complex

Abstract:The k-Cauchy-Fueter complex, k = 0, 1, ..., in quaternionic analysis are the counterpart of the Dolbeault complex in the theory of several complex variables. In this paper, we construct explicitly boundary complexes of these complexes on boundaries of domains, corresponding to the tangential Cauchy-Riemann complex in complex analysis. They are only known boundary complexes outside of complex analysis that have interesting applications to the function theory. As an application, we establish the Hartogs-Bochner extension for k -regular functions, the quaternionic counterpart of holomorphic functions. These boundary complexes have a very simple form on a kind of quadratic hypersurfaces, which have the structure of right-type nilpotent Lie groups of step two. They allow us to introduce the quaternionic Monge-Ampere operator and open the door to investigate pluripotential theory on such groups. We also apply abstract duality theorem to boundary complexes to obtain the generalization of Malgrange's vanishing theorem and the Hartogs-Bochner extension for k-CF functions, the quaternionic counterpart of CR functions, on this kind of groups.

Abstract:Abstract. We show that a Kleinian surface group, or hyperbolic 3-manifold with a cusp-preserving homotopy-equivalence to a surface, has bounded geometry if and only if there is an upper bound on an associated collection of coefficients that depend only on its end invariants. Bounded geometry is a positive lower bound on the lengths of closed geodesics. When the surface is a once-punctured torus, the coefficients coincide with the continued fraction coefficients associated to the ending laminations.

Abstract:We study the interplay between spectrum, geometry and boundary conditions for two distinguished self-adjoint realisations of the Laplacian on infinite metric graphs, the so-called Friedrichs and Neumann extensions. We introduce a new criterion for compactness of the resolvent and apply this to identify a transition from purely discrete to non-empty essential spectrum among a class of infinite metric graphs, a phenomenon that seems to have no known counterpart for Laplacians on Euclidean domains of infinite volume. In the case of discrete spectrum we then prove upper and lower bounds on eigenvalues, thus extending a number of bounds previously only known in the compact setting to infinite graphs. Some of our bounds, for instance in terms of the inradius, are new even on compact graphs.
