Abstract:We study removable sets for the Orlicz-Sobolev space $W^{1,\Psi},$ for functions of the form $\Psi(t)=t^p\log^{\lambda}(e+t).$ We show that $(p,\lambda)$-porous sets lying in a hyperplane are removable and that this result is essentially sharp.

Abstract:We study conditions on closed sets $C,F \subset \mathbb{R}$ making the product $C \times F$ removable or non-removable for $W^{1,p}$. The main results show that the Hausdorff-dimension of the smaller dimensional component $C$ determines a critical exponent above which the product is removable for some positive measure sets $F$, but below which the product is not removable for another collection of positive measure totally disconnected sets $F$. Moreover, if the set $C$ is Ahlfors-regular, the above removability holds for any totally disconnected $F$.

Abstract:Building on Talagrand's proof of the Hoffmann-Jørgensen inequality for $L_p$ spaces and its version for the exponential Orlicz spaces we provide a full characterization of Orlicz functions $\Psi$ for which an analogous inequality holds in the Orlicz space $L_\Psi(F)$, where $F$ is an arbitrary Banach space. As an application we present a characterization of Talagrand-type concentration inequality for suprema of empirical processes with envelope in $L_\Psi$ (equivalently for sums of independent $F$-valued random variables in $L_\Psi(F)$). This result generalizes in particular an inequality by the first-named author concerning exponentially integrable summands and a recent inequality due to Chamakh-Gobet-Liu on summands with $\beta$-heavy tails. Another corollary concerns concentration for convex functions of independent, unbounded random variables, generalizing recent results due to Klochkov-Zhivotovskiy and Sambale. We also obtain a corollary concerning boundedness in $L_\Psi(F)$ of partial sums of a series of independent random variables, generalizing the original result by Hoffmann-Jørgensen.

Abstract:We give a sharp sufficient condition on the distribution function, $|\{x\in \Omega :\,p(x)\leq 1+\lambda\}|$, $\lambda>0$, of the exponent function $p(\cdot): \Omega \to [1,\infty)$ that implies the embedding of the variable Lebesgue space $L^{p(\cdot)}(\Omega)$ into the Orlicz space $L(\log L)^{\alpha}(\Omega)$, $\alpha>0$, where $\Omega$ is an open set with finite Lebesgue measure. As applications of our results, we first give conditions that imply the strong differentiation of integrals of functions in $L^{p(\cdot)}((0,1)^{n})$, $n>1$. We then consider the integrability of the maximal function on variable Lebesgue spaces, where the exponent function $p(\cdot)$ approaches $1$ in value on some part of the domain. This result is an improvement of the result in~\cite{CUF2}.

Abstract:We give new characterizations of the optimal data space for the $L^p(bD,\sigma)$-Neumann boundary value problem for the $\bar{\partial}$ operator associated to a bounded, Lipschitz domain $D\subset\mathbb{C}$. We show that the solution space is embedded (as a Banach space) in the Dirichlet space and that for $p=2$, the solution space is a reproducing kernel Hilbert space.

Abstract:We study subspaces of Orlicz spaces $L_M$ spanned by independent copies $f_k$, $k=1,2,\dots$, of a function $f\in L_M$, $\int_0^1 f(t)\,dt=0$. Any such a subspace $H$ is isomorphic to some Orlicz sequence space $\ell_\psi$. In terms of dilations of the function $f$, a description of strongly embedded subspaces of this type is obtained, and conditions, guaranteeing that the unit ball of such a subspace consists of functions with equicontinuous norms in $L_M$, are found. In particular, we prove that there is a wide class of Orlicz spaces $L_M$ (containing $L^p$-spaces, $1\le p< 2$), for which each of the above properties of $H$ holds if and only if the Matuszewska-Orlicz indices of the functions $M$ and $\psi$ satisfy the inequality: $\alpha_\psi^0>\beta_M^\infty$.

Abstract:We consider sets removable for bounded harmonic functions on a stratified set with flat interior strata. It is proved that relatively closed sets of finite Hausdorff -measure are removable for bounded harmonic functions on an n -dimensional stratified set satisfying the strong sturdiness condition.

Abstract:We study the subsets of metric spaces that are negligible for the infimal length of connecting curves; such sets are called metrically removable. In particular, we show that every closed totally disconnected set with finite Hausdorff measure of codimension 1 is metrically removable, which answers a question raised by Hakobyan and Herron. The metrically removable sets are shown to be related to other classes of “thin” sets that appeared in the literature. They are also related to the removability problems for classes of holomorphic functions with restrictions on the derivative.

Abstract:Let Ω be a C^1 open bounded domain in ℝ^N, N≥ 3, with 0∈Ω̅. We consider the following problem involving Hardy–Sobolev critical exponents: (P) {[ Δ u+λu^p/|x|^s_1+u^2^*(s_2)-1/|x|^s_2=0 in Ω ,; u(x)>0 in Ω ; u(x)=0 on ∂Ω , ]. where 0≤ s_1<2, 0≤ s_2< 2, 2^*(s_2):=2(N-s_2)/N-2, 0λ∈ℝ, 1≤ p≤ 2^*(s_1)-1 , and with choices of exponents and parameters corresponding to cases in which (P) has not been before investigated. We prove the existence of positive solutions, which, in some cases, are also shown to be ground states. We remark that we give a first partial answer to a question proposed by Li and Lin (Arch Ration Mech Anal 203(3):943–968, 2012 ).

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the existence of closed vector subspaces (i.e.spaceability) in various nonlinear subsets of Orlicz-Lorentz spaces $\Lambda_{\varphi,w}$, equipped with the Luxemburg norm. If a family of Orlicz functions $(\varphi_n)_{n=1}^{\infty}$ satisfies certain order relations with respect to a given Orlicz function $\varphi$, the subset of the order-continuous subspace $(\Lambda_{\varphi,w})_a$ whose elements do not belong to $\bigcup_{n=1}^{\infty}\Lambda_{\varphi_n,w}$ is spaceable, and even maximal-spaceable when $\varphi$ satisfies the $\Delta_2$-condition. We also show that this subset is either residual or empty. In addition, sufficient conditions for this subset not being $(\alpha, \beta)$-spaceable are provided. A similar analysis is also performed on the subset $\Lambda_{\varphi,w} \setminus (\Lambda_{\varphi,w})_a$ when $\varphi$ does not satisfy the $\Delta_2$-condition. The comparison between different Orlicz-Lorentz spaces is characterized via the generating pairs $(\varphi,w)$. For a fixed Orlicz function that satisfies the $\Delta_2^{\infty}$-condition, we provide a characterization of disjointly strictly singular inclusion operators between Orlicz-Lorentz spaces with different weights. As a consequence, there are certain subsets of Orlicz-Lorentz spaces on $[0,1]$ for which lineability problem is not valid. Moreover, various types of $(\alpha,\beta)$-lineability and pointwise lineability properties on other nonlinear subsets of Orlicz-Lorentz spaces are examined. These results extend a number of previously known results in Orlicz and Lorentz spaces.

Abstract:We consider open discrete mappings of Riemannian manifolds satisfying a certain modulus inequality and analyze the possibility of continuous extension of these mappings to an isolated point of the boundary. It is proved that these mappings admit extensions of this kind if they exclude two or more points of the connected Riemannian manifold and the majorant appearing in the modulus inequality is integrable over almost all spheres.

Abstract:Let Ω be a pseudoconvex domain with C-smooth boundary in CP . We prove that the ∂̄-Neumann operator N exists for (p, q)-forms on Ω. Furthermore, there exists a t0 > 0 such that the operators N , ∂̄N , ∂̄N and the Bergman projection are regular in the Sobolev space W (Ω̄) for t < t0. The boundary estimates above have applications in complex geometry. We use the estimates to prove the nonexistence of C real Levi-flat hypersurfaces in CP . We also show that there exist no non-zero L-holomorphic (p, 0)-forms on any pseudoconcave domain in CP n with p > 0.
On Köthe duals of Orlicz-Lorentz spaces

Abstract:In this article, we study a number of properties of the Köthe duals $\mathcal{M}_{\varphi,w}$ of Orlicz-Lorentz spaces. An explicit description of the order-continuous subspace of $\mathcal{M}_{\varphi,w}$ is provided. Moreover, the separability of these spaces is characterized by the growth condition $\Delta_2$. Consequently, the Köthe dual space $\mathcal{M}_{\varphi,w}$ has the Radon-Nikodým property if and only if the N-function at infinity $\varphi$ satisfies the appropriate $\Delta_2$-condition. The comparison between $\mathcal{M}_{\varphi,w}$ spaces is characterized via standard orders between Orlicz functions. As applications of these results, we provide sufficient conditions for M-embedded order-continuous subspaces of Orlicz-Lorentz spaces equipped with the Luxemburg norm and prove the existence of a unique norm-preserving extension on Orlicz-Lorentz spaces equipped with the Orlicz norm.

Abstract:We prove existence, multiplicity, and bifurcation results for p-Laplacian problems involving critical Hardy–Sobolev exponents. Our results are mainly for the case $\lambda \ge \lambda _1$ and extend results in the literature for $0< \lambda < \lambda _1$. In the absence of a direct sum decomposition, we use critical point theorems based on a cohomological index and a related pseudo-index.

Abstract:We prove Sobolev-Poincaré and Poincaré inequalities in variable Lebesgue spaces $L^{p(\cdot)}(\Omega)$, with $\Omega\subset{\mathbb R}^n$ a bounded John domain, with weaker regularity assumptions on the exponent $p(\cdot)$ that have been used previously. In particular, we require $p(\cdot)$ to satisfy a new \emph{boundary $\log$-Hölder condition} that imposes some logarithmic decay on the oscillation of $p(\cdot)$ towards the boundary of the domain. Some control over the interior oscillation of $p(\cdot)$ is also needed, but it is given by a very general condition that allows $p(\cdot)$ to be discontinuous at every point of $\Omega$. Our results follows from a local-to-global argument based on the continuity of certain Hardy type operators. We provide examples that show that our boundary $\log$-Hölder condition is essentially necessary for our main results. The same examples are adapted to show that this condition is not sufficient for other related inequalities. Finally, we give an application to a Neumann problem for a degenerate $p(\cdot)$-Laplacian.

Abstract:We prove that local weak solutions of the orthotropic $p-$harmonic equation are locally Lipschitz, for every $p\ge 2$ and in every dimension. More generally, the result holds true for more degenerate equations with orthotropic structure, with right-hand sides in suitable Sobolev spaces.
