The relation between the wavelength$lambda_r$ of the emitted radiation, and the wiggler period $lambda_w$in a free electron laser is $displaystylelambda_rsim~lambda_w/gamma^2$,in which $gamma$ is the Lorentz factor of the emitting electron.Requiring$lambda_r$ falls into the $gamma$-ray region, $lambda_w$ has tobe less than 1 mm.It seems impossible to be realized in a usual freeelectron laser either. We therefore propose a way to realize it byletting charged particles wiggle in an usual back ground laser. Acircularly polarized plane wave laser distorts the electron wave in$x$-$y$ planes,periodically along the $z$ direction, andmodulatesthe periodicity along the $z$direction. It is the quantum correspondenceof the classical wiggling of electrons. Since a laser is a coherentelectromagneticwave, simple and clean, it is therefore anideal wiggler. To accuratelyand reliably analyze the whole process, we proposed Quantum Electrodynamicsin a Laser. It is equivalent to the Quantum Electrodynamics in Vacuum,and is therefore the most reliable theory nowadays as well. In this sense,the generated $gamma$-ray laser is aQuantum Free Electron Laser.Therefore we clearly concluded that in a head on collision betweena suitable mono-energetic electron beam and a monochromatic planewave laser, a $gamma$-ray laser should be generated. For an electronbeam of density $n_0~=~10^{18}$ m$^{-3}$and energy $E~=~307$ MeV,in the backgroundlaser with $lambda~=785$ nm and $I~=~10^{19}$ W/m$^2$,theintensity of the output $gamma$-ray laser is about$5~times~10^{13}$W/m$^2$. It is meaningful. Of course, this is a theoretical conclusionunder ideal conditions. The competition and the balance between theemissionand reabsorption of quanta byelectrons determine the evolution andthereforethe output intensity of the $gamma$-raylaser. However, Synergeticstells us that there will be a critical point. When the real situationapproaches the ideal condition and acrosses over this point, the positivefeedback of stimulated emissions leads to a collapse of the created$gamma$-photon beam into a coherent state. This is a phase transitionof the produced $gamma$-ray into a $gamma$-ray laser, and is justwhat we want to search in experiments.

Abstract:Electron acceleration and γ-ray emission by circularly polarized laser pulses interacting with near-critical-density plasmas are systematically investigated for both the non-quantum-electrodynamic (non-QED) and QED regimes. In the non-QED regime, since electron density in the plasma channel is small and the self-generated electromagnetic fields are weak, only a few electrons can achieve the resonant acceleration, leading to weak γ-ray emission. However, when it comes to the QED regime, the radiation recoil force significantly affects the electron dynamics, which helps in not only the trapping of electrons, but also the relaxing of the condition for electrons to hit the resonance with laser fields, resulting in the formation of an ultradense helical electron bunch under resonant acceleration in the plasma channel. Therefore, an intense γ-ray pulse with unprecedented flux can be generated. Theoretical analysis and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are carried out to compare the dynamics in two different regimes.

Abstract:The generation of highly polarized high-energy brilliant γ-rays via laser–plasma interaction is investigated in the quantum radiation-reaction regime. We employ a quantum electrodynamics particle-in-cell code to describe spin-resolved electron dynamics semiclassically and photon emission and polarization quantum mechanically in the local constant field approximation. As an ultrastrong linearly polarized (LP) laser pulse irradiates a near-critical-density (NCD) plasma followed by an ultrathin planar aluminum target, the electrons in the NCD plasma are first accelerated by the driving laser to ultrarelativistic energies and then collide head-on with the laser pulse reflected by the aluminum target, emitting brilliant LP γ-rays via nonlinear Compton scattering with an average polarization of about 70% and energy up to hundreds of MeV. Such γ-rays can be produced with currently achievable laser facilities and will find various applications in high-energy physics and laboratory astrophysics.

Collimated Ultra-Bright Gamma-Rays from a PW-Laser-Driven Wire Wiggler

Abstract:It is shown by three-dimensional QED particle-in-cell simulation that as a laser pulse of 2.5 PW and 20 fs propagates along a sub-wavelength-wide solid wire, directional synchrotron $gamma-$rays along the wire surface can be efficiently generated. With 8% energy conversion from the pulse, the $gamma-$rays contains $10^{12}$ photons between 5 and 500 MeV within 10 fs duration, corresponding to peak brilliance of $10^{27}$ photons ${rm s^{-1}~ mrad^{-2}~ mm^{-2}}$ per 0.1% bandwidth. The brilliance and photon energy are respectively 2 and 3 orders of magnitude higher than the highest values of synchrotron radiation facilities. The radiation is attributed to the generation of nC, GeV electron beams well guided along the wire surface and their wiggling motion in strong electrostatic and magnetostatic fields induced at the high-density-wire surface. In particular, these quasistatic fields are so strong that QED effects already play a significant role for the $gamma-$ray radiation. With the laser power $P_0$ ranging from 0.5 PW to 5 PW available currently, this scheme can robustly produce $gamma-$rays peaked at $1^circ$ with few-mrad divergence and the photon energy and number roughly scales with $P_0$ and $P_0^{3/2}$, respectively. Our scheme embraces both the merits of high directionality comparable to those based upon laser wakefield acceleration and high charge comparable to those based upon laser-solid interaction.

Abstract:The promising ability of a plasma wiggler based on laser wakefield acceleration to produce betatron X-rays with photon energies of a few keV to hundreds of keV and a peak brilliance of 10 22 –10 23 photons/s/mm 2 /mrad 2 /0.1%BW has been demonstrated, providing an alternative to large-scale synchrotron light sources. Most methods for generating betatron radiation are based on two typical approaches, one relying on an inherent transverse focusing electrostatic field, which induces transverse oscillation, and the other relying on the electron beam catching up with the rear part of the laser pulse, which results in strong electron resonance. Here, we present a new regime of betatron γ-ray radiation generated by stimulating a large-amplitude transverse oscillation of a continuously injected electron bunch through the hosing of the bubble induced by the carrier envelope phase (CEP) effect of the self-steepened laser pulse. Our method increases the critical photon energy to the MeV level, according to the results of particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The highly collimated, energetic and femtosecond γ-ray bursts that are produced in this way may provide an interesting potential means of exploring nuclear physics in table top photo nuclear reactions.

Abstract:Ultra-fast synchrotron radiation emission can arise from the transverse betatron motion of an electron in a laser plasma wakefield, and the radiation spectral peak is limited to tens of keV. Here, we present a new method for achieving high-energy radiation via accelerated electrons wiggling in an additional laser field whose intensity is one order of magnitude higher than that for the self-generated transverse field of the bubble, resulting in an equivalent wiggler strength parameter K increase of approximately twenty times. By calculating synchrotron radiation, we acquired a peak brightness for the case of the laser wiggler field of 1.2 × 1023 ph/s/mrad2/mm2/0.1%BW at 1 MeV. Such a high brilliance and ultra-fast gamma-ray source could be applied to time-resolved probing of dense materials and the production of medical radioisotopes.

Abstract:Significance Even though bright X-rays below mega-electron volt photon energy can be obtained from X-ray free electron lasers and synchrotron radiation facilities, it remains a great challenge to generate collimated bright gamma-ray beams over 10 mega-electron volts. We propose a scheme to efficiently generate such beams from submicron wires irradiated by petawatt lasers, where electron accelerating and wiggling are achieved simultaneously. With significant quantum electrodynamics effects existing even with petawatt lasers, our full 3D simulations show that directional gamma rays can be generated with thousand-fold higher brilliance and thousand-fold higher photon energy than those from synchrotron radiation facilities. In addition, the photon yield efficiency approaches 10%, 100,000-fold higher than those typical from betatron radiation and Compton scattering based on laser-wakefield accelerators.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to generate gamma-ray photons with an orbital angular momentum (OAM) and high energy simultaneously from laser-plasma interactions by irradiating a circularly polarized Laguerre-Gaussian laser on a thin plasma target. The spin angular momentum and OAM are first transferred to electrons from the driving laser photons, and then the OAM is transferred to the gamma-ray photons from the electrons through quantum radiation. This scheme has been demonstrated using three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics particle-in-cell simulation. The topological charge, chirality and carrier-envelope phase of the short ultra-intense vortex laser can be revealed according to the pattern feature of the energy density of radiated photons.

Abstract:CO2 laser-driven electron acceleration in low-density plasma is demonstrated using particle-in-cell simulation. An intense CO2 laser pulse of long wavelength excites a wake bubble that has a large elongated volume for accelerating a large number of electrons before reaching the charge saturation limit. A transversely injected laser pulse is used to induce and control the electron injection. It is found that an electron bunch with total charge up to 10 nC and absolute energy spread less than 16 MeV can be obtained. As a result, the charge per energy interval of the bunch reaches up to 0.6 nC/MeV. Intense CO2-laser based electron acceleration can provide a new direction for generating highly charged electron bunches with low energy spread, which is of much current interest, especially for table-top X-ray generation.
Quasimonoenergetic Electron Beam and Brilliant Gamma-Ray Radiation Generated from Near Critical Density Plasma Due to Relativistic Resonant Phase Locking

Abstract:We show that a high current quasi-monoenergetic electron beam and a peaked brilliant gamma-ray beam can be generated by irradiating an ultra-intense laser pulse on uniform near critical density plasma, with a laser spot radius RL∼(λ/π)2a/n, here λ is the laser wave length, a denotes the normalized laser intensity, and n denotes the normalized plasma density. Due to a relativistic resonant phase locking mechanism, high energy oscillating electrons are trapped to ride on the laser electric field, and an unprecedented ultra-fast ultra-brilliant gamma-ray pulse is emitted from the electrons. Both the high energy electrons and gamma-ray photons are emitted in a small polar angle range. It is similar to a conventional wiggler synchrotron, except that the curvature radius of electron orbits in the laboratory coordinate frame measures in microns rather than in meters.

Abstract:The advent of high-power ultra-short laser pulses opens up new frontiers of relativistic non-linear optics, high energy density physics and laboratory astrophysics. As the laser electric field in the particle rest frame approaches the Schwinger field $$E_{cr} = 1.3 \times 10^{18}\,\textrm{V} \textrm{m}^{-1}$$ E cr = 1.3 × 10 18 V m - 1 , the laser interaction with matter enters into the quantum electrodynamics (QED) dominated regime, where extremely rich non-linear phenomena take place, such as a violent acceleration of charged particles, copious lepton pair production, and ultra-brilliant X/$$\gamma$$ γ -ray emission. Among them, X/$$\gamma$$ γ -ray emission based on the laser-plasma is generally characterized by large photon flux, high brilliance, small source size, and high photon energy, which can even annihilate into lepton pairs by colliding with photons. Though various schemes have been proposed for bright high-energy photon emission and lepton generation and acceleration, many predictions remain to be confirmed and thoroughly tested in experiments. In this review, we introduce recent advances in bright X/$$\gamma$$ γ -ray radiation and lepton pair generation in the QED regime by the interaction of relativistic intense lasers with various plasma targets. The characteristics of the radiation and secondary particles generated via these schemes are summarized, and the experimental progresses are elaborated.
Generation of $γ$ photons with extremely large orbital angular momenta

Abstract:Vortex $\gamma$ photons, which carry large intrinsic orbital angular momenta (OAM), have significant applications in nuclear, atomic, hadron, particle and astro-physics, but their production remains unclear. In this work, we investigate the generation of such photons from nonlinear Compton scattering of circularly polarized monochromatic lasers on vortex electrons. We develop a quantum radiation theory for ultrarelativistic vortex electrons in lasers by using the harmonics expansion and spin eigenfunctions, which allows us to explore the kinematical characteristics, angular momentum transfer mechanisms, and formation conditions of vortex $\gamma$ photons. The multiphoton absorption of electrons enables the vortex $\gamma$ photons, with fixed polarizations and energies, to exist in mixed states comprised of multiple harmonics. Each harmonic represents a vortex eigenmode and has transverse momentum broadening due to transverse momenta of the vortex electrons. The large topological charges associated with vortex electrons offer the possibility for $\gamma$ photons to carry adjustable OAM quantum numbers from tens to thousands of units, even at moderate laser intensities. $\gamma$ photons with large OAM and transverse coherence length can assist in influencing quantum selection rules and extracting phase of the scattering amplitude in scattering processes.

Generation of Ultra-Collimated Polarized Attosecond $γ-$Rays via Beam Instabilities

Abstract:Polarized attosecond $\gamma-$rays may offer excitation and hyperfine tracking of reactions relevant to nuclear physics, astrophysics, high-energy physics, etc. However, unfortunately, generation of a feasible and easy-to-deploy source is still a great challenge. Here, we put forward a novel method for producing ultra-collimated high-brilliance polarized attosecond $\gamma-$rays via the interaction of an unpolarized electron beam with a solid-density plasma. As a relativistic electron beam enters a solid-density plasma, it can be modulated into high-density clusters via the self-modulation instability of itself and further into attosecond slices due to its own hosing instability. This is accompanied by the generation of similar pulse-width $\gamma-$slices via nonlinear Compton scattering. The severe hosing instability breaks the symmetry of the excited electromagnetic fields, resulting in net linear polarization of $\gamma-$slices, which challenges the conventional perception that the interaction of an axially symmetric unpolarized electron beam with a uniform plasma cannot generate polarized radiation. In addition, we also obtain high-quality electron microbunches which may serve as an alternative source for prebunched free-electron lasers.

Abstract:In nonlinear media, photons may combine into a photon of energy and momentum of all those photons. This process, called harmonic generation, happens in nonlinear crystal, gas, and relativistic plasma. When the laser intensity reaches 1022 W/cm2, QED effects appear and play a significant role in the harmonic generation. In contrast to the gas and relativistic high-order harmonic generation processes, harmonics influenced by QED effects are usually not coherent because of the characteristic of random radiation, while the property of high intensity and ultra-short duration is conserved. In this work, the generation of high-order harmonics with QED effects is investigated by one- and two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Studies have shown that interacting with a laser pulse with the intensity of I=5.35×1023 W/cm2, such harmonics can produce ultra-short gamma-ray train with periodic structures. The period of gamma-ray train is half of the laser period, and the peak intensity is 1.4×1022 W/cm2 from one-dimensional simulation when ions are considered immobile. This new harmonic production with QED effects are crucial to light-matter interaction in strong field and can be verified in experiments by 10 PW laser facilities in the near future.

Abstract:The ability of rotating black holes to imprint orbital angular momentum (OAM) on the cosmic rays indicates that measuring the OAM spectra of cosmological gamma ray bursts is a promising route to detect the existence of black holes in the universe. An alternative method of generating violent emission of gamma rays is utilizing the interaction of petawatt ($10^{15}$W) lasers and plasmas in the laboratory, whereas none of the previous investigation involves the realization of twisted gamma rays up to GeV. Here we present an all-optical scheme for studying a laser-plasma based incoherent photon emission with an intrinsic OAM in quantum electrodynamic (QED) regime. A theoretical model is also proposed to explain the dynamic properties of OAM and energy transformation from electromagnetic fields to particles. 3D Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations manifest our twisted gamma-ray flash with an unprecedented power of multi-petawatt (PW) and brightness of 1.7$times$10$^{23}$photons/s/mm$^2$/mrad$^2$/0.1$%$bandwidth (at 1GeV) taking advantage of a prospective $sim$10$^{23}$W/cm$^{2}$ scale laser facility. These results bode well for new research direction in particle physics and laboratory astrophysics while exploring laser plasma interaction.

Abstract:Although several laser-plasma-based methods have been proposed for generating energetic electrons, positrons and gamma-photons, manipulation of their microstructures is still challenging, and their angular momentum control has not yet been achieved. Here, we present and numerically demonstrate an all-optical scheme to generate bright GeV gamma-photon and positron beams with controllable angular momentum by use of two counter-propagating circularly-polarized lasers in a near-critical-density plasma. The plasma acts as a 'switching medium', where the trapped electrons first obtain angular momentum from the drive laser pulse and then transfer it to the gamma-photons via nonlinear Compton scattering. Further through the multiphoton Breit-Wheeler process, dense energetic positron beams are efficiently generated, whose angular momentum can be well controlled by laser-plasma interactions. This opens up a promising and feasible way to produce ultra-bright GeV gamma-photons and positron beams with desirable angular momentum for a wide range of scientific research and applications.

Abstract:Inverse Compton scattering between ultra-relativistic electrons and an intense laser field has been proposed as a major route to generate compact high-brightness and high-energy γ-rays. Attributed to the inherent synchronization mechanism, an all-optical Compton scattering γ-ray source, using one laser to both accelerate electrons and scatter via the reflection of a plasma mirror, has been demonstrated in proof-of-principle experiments to produce a x-ray source near 100 keV. Here, by designing a cascaded laser wakefield accelerator to generate high-quality monoenergetic e-beams, which are bound to head-on collide with the intense driving laser pulse via the reflection of a 20-um-thick Ti foil, we produce tunable quasi-monochromatic MeV γ-rays (33% full-width at half-maximum) with a peak brilliance of ~3 × 1022 photons s−1 mm−2 mrad−2 0.1% BW at 1 MeV. To the best of our knowledge, it is one order of magnitude higher than ever reported value of its kinds in MeV regime. This compact ultrahigh brilliance γ-ray source may provide applications in nuclear resonance fluorescence, x-ray radiology and ultrafast pump-probe nondestructive inspection.
