Abstract:In this thesis, we consider geometric properties of vector bundles arising from algebraic and Hermitian geometry. On vector bundles in algebraic geometry, such as ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles, we are able to construct positive Hermitian metrics in different senses(e.g. Griffiths-positive, Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive) by L2-method and deduce many new vanishing theorems for them by analytic method instead of the Le Potier-Leray spectral sequence method. On Hermitian manifolds, we find that the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. We can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and also for complex vector bundles over Hermitian manifolds by their second Ricci curvature tensors. We also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish an L-2-type Dolbeault isomorphism for logarithmic differential forms by Hrmander's L-2 estimates. By using this isomorphism and the construction of smooth Hermitian metrics, we obtain a number of new vanishing theorems for sheaves of logarithmic differential forms on compact Kahler manifolds with simple normal crossing divisors, which generalize several classical vanishing theorems, including Norimatsu's vanishing theorem, Girbau's vanishing theorem, Le Potier's vanishing theorem, and a version of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem.

Abstract:In LM, we proved a family version of the famous Witten rigidity theorems and several family vanishing theorems for elliptic genera. In this paper, we gerenalize our theorems LM in two directions. First we establish a family rigidity theorem for the Dirac operator on loop space twisted by general positive energy loop group representations. Second we prove a family rigidity theorem for spin^c-manifolds. Several vanishing theorems on both cases are also obtained.

Abstract: Determination of quasi-invariant generalized functions is important for a variety of problems in representation theory, notably character theory and restriction problems. In this note, we review some new and easy-to-use techniques to show vanishing of quasi-invariant generalized functions, developed in the recent work of the authors (Uniqueness of Ginzburg-Rallis models: the Archimedean case, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 363, (2011), 2763-2802). The first two techniques involve geometric notions attached to submanifolds, which we call metrical properness and unipotent $\chi$-incompatibility. The third one is analytic in nature, and it arises from the first occurrence phenomenon in Howe correspondence. We also highlight how these techniques quickly lead to two well-known uniqueness results, on trilinear forms and Whittaker models.

Abstract:On a compact foliated Riemannian manifold with some transversal curvature conditions, there are no nontrivial basic harmonic forms (M. Min-Oo et al., J. Reine Angew. Math. 415 (1991). In this paper, we extend the above facts to a complete foliated Riemannian manifold.

Abstract:In this note, we give a new proof of a vanishing result originally due to Bogomolov, and later generalised by Mourougane and Boucksom. The statement holds for arbitrary pseudoeffective line bundles over compact Kähler manifolds, under an assumption on the numerical dimension of the line bundle.

Abstract:We extend our family rigidity and vanishing theorems in [LiuMaZ] to the Spin c case.In particular, we prove a ^-theory version of the main results of [H], [Liul, Theorem B] for a family of almost complex manifolds.0. Introduction.Let M, B be two compact smooth manifolds, and TT : M -» B be a smooth fibration with compact fibre X.Let TX be the relative tangent bundle.Assume that a compact Lie group G acts fiberwise on M, that is, the action preserves each fiber of TT.Let P be a family of G-equivariant elliptic operators along the fiber X.Then the family index of P, Ind(P), is a well-defined element in K(B) (cf.[AS]) and is a virtual G-representation (cf.[LiuMal]).We denote by (Ind(P)) G £ K(B) the G-invariant part of Ind(P).A family of elliptic operator P is said to be rigid on the equivariant Chern character level with respect to this G-action, if the equivariant Chern character ch 5 (Ind(P)) G H*(B) is independent of g G G. Remark on Laplacians and Riemannian Submersions with Totally Geodesic Fibers

Abstract:Given a Riemannian submersion $(M,g) \to (B,j)$ each of whose fiber is connected and totally geodesic, we consider a certain 1-parameter family of Riemannian metrics $(g_{t})_{t > 0}$ on $M$, which is called the canonical variation. We prove that if each fiber is Einstein and $(M,g)$ satisfies a certain condition about its Ricci curvature, then the $l$-th positive eigenvalue $\lambda_{l}(g_{t})$ of the Laplacian on $(M,g_{t})$ is bounded from below by a positive constant independent of $l$. This in particular implies that the scale-invariant quantity $\lambda_{1}(g_{t})\mbox{Vol}(M,g_{t})^{2/\mbox{dim}M}$ goes to $\infty$ with $t$. We consider many examples. In particular, we consider Riemannian submersions from compact rank one symmetric spaces and the twistor fibration of a quaternionic Kähler manifold of positive scalar curvature.

Analytic and Topological Invariants Associated to Nowhere Zero Vector Fields

Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed

Abstract:Let $-\im\Lie_\T$ (essentially Lie derivative with respect to $\T$, a smooth nowhere zero real vector field) and $P$ be commuting differential operators, respectively of orders 1 and $m\geq 1$, the latter formally normal, both acting on sections of a vector bundle over a closed manifold. It is shown that if $P+(-i\Lie_\T)^m$ is elliptic then the restriction of $-\im\Lie_\T$ to $\Dom\subset \ker P\subset L^2$ yields a selfadjoint operator $-\im\Lie_\T|_\Dom:\Dom\subset\ker P\to \ker P$ with compact resolvent ($\Dom$ is specified carefully). It is also shown that, in the presence of an additional hypothesis on microlocal hypoellipticity of $P$, $-\im\Lie_\T|_\Dom$ is semi-bounded. These results are applied to CR manifolds on which $\T$ acts as an infinitesimal CR transformation which are then shown to yield versions of Kodaira's vanishing theorem.

A Twisted Adiabatic Limit Approach to Vanishing Theorems for Complex Line Bundles

Abstract:Given an $n$-dimensional compact complex Hermitian manifold $X$, a $C^\infty$ complex line bundle $L$ equipped with a connection $D$ whose $(0,\,1)$-component $D''$ squares to zero and a real-valued function $\eta$ on $X$, we prove that the $D''$-cohomology group of $L$ of any bidegree $(p,\,q)$ such that either $(p>q \hspace{1ex}\mbox{and}\hspace{1ex} p+q\geq n+1)$ or $(p<q \hspace{1ex}\mbox{and}\hspace{1ex} p+q\leq n-1)$ vanishes when two extra hypotheses are made. The first hypothesis requires a certain real-valued, not necessarily closed, $(1,\,1)$-form depending on $p,\,q$, on the curvature of $D$ and on a $(1,\,1)$-form induced by $\eta$ to be positive definite. The second hypothesis requires the norm of $\partial\eta$ to be small relative to $|\eta|$. This theorem, for which we also give a number of variants, is proved by generalising our very recent twisted adiabatic limit construction for complex structures to connections on complex line bundles. This twisting of $D$ induces first-order differential operators acting on the $L$-valued forms, for which we obtain commutation relations involving their formal adjoints, and two twisted Laplacians for which we obtain a comparison formula reminiscent of the classical Bochner-Kodaira-Nakano identity. The main features of our results are that $X$ need not be Kähler, $L$ need not be holomorphic and the types of $C^\infty$ functions that $X$ supports play a key role in our hypotheses, thus capturing some of their links with the geometry of manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider orthogonal Ricci curvature $Ric^{\perp }$ for Kähler manifolds, which is a curvature condition closely related to Ricci curvature and holomorphic sectional curvature. We prove comparison theorems and a vanishing theorem related to these curvature conditions, and construct various examples to illustrate subtle relationship among them. As a consequence of the vanishing theorem, we show that any compact Kähler manifold with positive orthogonal Ricci curvature must be projective. This result complements a recent result of Yang (RC-positivity, rational connectedness, and Yau’s conjecture. arXiv:1708.06713) on the projectivity under the positivity of holomorphic sectional curvature. The simply-connectedness is shown when the complex dimension is smaller than five. Further study of compact Kähler manifolds with $Ric^{\perp }>0$ is carried in Ni et al. (Manifolds with positive orthogonal Ricci curvature. arXiv:1806.10233).

Abstract:In the present paper, we prove several vanishing theorems for the kernel of the Lichnerowicz-type Laplacian and provide estimates for its lowest eigenvalue on closed Riemannian manifolds. As an example of the Lichnerowicz-type Laplacian, we consider the Hodge–de Rham Laplacian acting on forms and ordinary Lichnerowicz Laplacian acting on symmetric tensors. Additionally, we prove vanishing theorems for the null spaces of these Laplacians and find estimates for their lowest eigenvalues on closed Riemannian manifolds with suitably bounded curvature operators of the first kind, sectional and Ricci curvatures. Specifically, we will prove our version of the famous differential sphere theorem, which we will apply to the aforementioned problems concerning the ordinary Lichnerowicz Laplacian.

Abstract:In this paper, by using monotonicity formulas for vector bundle-valued p-forms satisfying the conservation law, we first obtain general L^2 global rigidity theorems for locally conformally flat (LCF) manifolds with constant scalar curvature, under curvature pinching conditions. Secondly, we prove vanishing results for L^2 and some non-L^2 harmonic p-forms on LCF manifolds, by assuming that the underlying manifolds satisfy pointwise or integral curvature conditions. Moreover, by a Theorem of Li-Tam for harmonic functions, we show that the underlying manifold must have only one end. Finally, we obtain Liouville theorems for p-harmonic functions on LCF manifolds under pointwise Ricci curvature conditions.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian manifold satisfying a weighted Poincaré inequality, and let $\mathcal{E}$ be a Hermitian vector bundle over $M$ equipped with a metric covariant derivative $\nabla$. We consider the operator $H_{X,V}=\nabla^{\dagger}\nabla+\nabla_{X}+ V$, where $\nabla^{\dagger}$ is the formal adjoint of $\nabla$ with respect to the inner product in the space of square-integrable sections of $\mathcal{E}$, $X$ is a smooth (real) vector field on $M$, and $V$ is a fiberwise self-adjoint, smooth section of the endomorphism bundle $\textrm{End }\mathcal{E}$. We give a sufficient condition for the triviality of the $L^2$-kernel of $H_{X,V}$. As a corollary, putting $X\equiv 0$ and working in the setting of a Clifford module equipped with a Clifford connection $\nabla$, we obtain the triviality of the $L^2$-kernel of $D^2$, where $D$ is the Dirac operator corresponding to $\nabla$. In particular, when $\mathcal{E}=\Lambda_{\mathbb{C}}^{k}T^*M$ and $D^2$ is the Hodge--deRham Laplacian on (complex-valued) $k$-forms, we recover some recent vanishing results for $L^2$-harmonic (complex-valued) $k$-forms.

Vanishing cycles of symplectic foliations

Abstract:Recent years have shown that the usual generalizations of taut foliations to higher dimensions, based only on topological concepts, do not yield a theory comparable in richness to the $3$-dimensional one. The aim of this article is to prove that strong symplectic foliations are, however, a natural candidate for such a generalization that does lead to some interesting rigidity results, such as potentially topological obstructions on the underlying ambient manifold. We introduce a high-dimensional generalization of $3$-dimensional vanishing cycles for symplectic foliations, which we call Lagrangian vanishing cycles, and prove that they prevent a symplectic foliation from being strong, just as vanishing cycles prevent tautness in dimension $3$ due to a classical result by Novikov from 1964. We then describe, in every codimension, examples of symplectically foliated manifolds which admit Lagrangian vanishing cycles, but for which more classical arguments do not obstruct the foliation from being strong. In codimension $1$, this is achieved by a rather explicit modification of the symplectic foliation, which allows us to open up closed leaves having non-trivial holonomy on both sides, and is thus of independent interest. Since there is no comprehensive source on holomorphic curves with boundary in symplectic foliations, we also give a detailed introduction to much of the analytic theory, hoping that it might serve as a reference for future work in this direction.

Abstract:Let $F: [0, \infty) \to [0, \infty)$ be a strictly increasing $C^2$ function with $F(0)=0$. We unify the concepts of $F$-harmonic maps, minimal hypersurfaces, maximal spacelike hypersurfaces, and Yang-Mills Fields, and introduce $F$-Yang-Mills fields, $F$-degree, $F$-lower degree, and generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld fields (with the plus sign or with the minus sign) on manifolds. When $F(t)=t, \frac 1p(2t)^{\frac p2}, \sqrt{1+2t} -1,$ and $1-\sqrt{1-2t},$ the $F$-Yang-Mills field becomes an ordinary Yang-Mills field, $p$-Yang-Mills field, a generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld field with the plus sign, and a generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld field with the minus sign on a manifold respectively. We also introduce the $E_{F,g}-$energy functional (resp. $F$-Yang-Mills functional) and derive the first variational formula of the $E_{F,g}-$energy functional (resp. $F$-Yang-Mills functional) with applications. In a more general frame, we use a unified method to study the stress-energy tensors that arise from calculating the rate of change of various functionals when the metric of the domain or base manifold is changed. These stress-energy tensors, linked to $F$-conservation laws yield monotonicity formulae. A "macroscopic" version of these monotonicity inequalities enables us to derive some Liouville type results and vanishing theorems for $p-$forms with values in vector bundles, and to investigate constant Dirichlet boundary value problems for 1-forms. In particular, we obtain Liouville theorems for $F-$harmonic maps (e.g. $p$-harmonic maps), and $F-$Yang-Mills fields (e.g. generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld fields on manifolds). We also obtain generalized Chern type results for constant mean curvature type equations for $p-$forms on $\Bbb{R}^m$ and on manifolds $M$ with the global doubling property by a different approach. The case $p=0$ and $M=\mathbb{R}^m$ is due to Chern.
