Abstract:In this article we have derived the minimum order of an odd regular graph such that the graph has no matching. We have observed that how it is different from the case of even regular graphs. We have checked the consistency of the derived result with Petersen's theorem.

Abstract:A graph is called equimatchable if all of its maximal matchings have the same size. Due to Eiben and Kotrbcik, any connected graph with odd order and independence number $\alpha(G)$ at most $2$ is equimatchable. Akbari et al. showed that for any odd number $r$, a connected equimatchable $r$-regular graph must be either the complete graph $K_{r+1}$ or the complete bipartite graph $K_{r,r}$. They also determined all connected equimatchable $4$-regular graphs and proved that for any even $r$, any connected equimatchable $r$-regular graph is either $K_{r,r}$ or factor-critical. In this paper, we confirm that for any even $r\ge 6$, there exists a unique connected equimatchable $r$-regular graph $G$ with $\alpha(G)\geq 3$ and odd order.

On odd covers of cliques and disjoint unions

Abstract:Babai and Frankl posed the ``odd cover problem" of finding the minimum cardinality of a collection of complete bipartite graphs such that every edge of the complete graph of order $n$ is covered an odd number of times. In a previous paper with O'Neill, some of the authors proved that this value is always $\lceil n / 2 \rceil$ or $\lceil n / 2 \rceil + 1$ and that it is the former whenever $n$ is a multiple of $8$. In this paper, we determine this value to be $\lceil n / 2 \rceil$ whenever $n$ is odd or equivalent to $18$ modulo $24$. We also further the study of odd covers of graphs which are not complete, wherein edges are covered an odd number of times and nonedges an even number of times by the complete bipartite graphs in the collection. Among various results on disjoint unions, we find the minimum cardinality of an odd cover of a union of odd cliques and of a union of cycles.

The maximum number of perfect matchings of semi-regular graphs

Abstract: Let $n\ge 34$ be an even integer, and $D_n=2\lceil n/4 \rceil-1$. In this paper, we prove that every $\{D_n,\,D_n+1\}$-graph of order $n$ contains $\lceil n/4 \rceil$ disjoint perfect matchings. This result is sharp in the sense that (i) there exists a $\{D_n,\,D_n+1\}$-graph containing exactly $\lceil n/4 \rceil$ disjoint perfect matchings, and that (ii) there exists a $\{D_n-1,\,D_n\}$-graph without perfect matchings for each $n$. As a consequence, for any integer $D\ge D_n$, every $\{D,\,D+1\}$-graph of order $n$ contains $\lceil (D+1)/2 \rceil$ disjoint perfect matchings. This extends Csaba et~al.'s breathe-taking result that every $D$-regular graph of sufficiently large order is $1$-factorizable, generalizes Zhang and Zhu's result that every $D_n$-regular graph of order $n$ contains $\lceil n/4 \rceil$ disjoint perfect matchings, and improves Hou's result that for all $k\ge n/2$, every $\{k,\,k+1\}$-graph of order $n$ contains $(\lfloor n/3\rfloor+1+k-n/2)$ disjoint perfect matchings.

Abstract:The concepts of k-pairable graphs and the pair length of a graph were introduced by Chen [Discrete Math. 287 (2004), 11-15] to generalize an elegant result of Graham et al. [Amer. Math. Monthly 101 (1994), 664-667] from hypercubes and graphs with antipodal isomorphisms to a much larger class of graphs. A graph G is k-pairable if there is a positive integer k such that the automorphism group of G contains an involution phi with the property that the distance between x and phi(x) is at least k for any vertex x of G. The pair length of a graph G, denoted by p(G), is the maximum positive integer k such that G is k-pairable; and p(G) = 0 if G is not k-pairable for any positive integer k. The aim of this paper is to answer an open question posted in our previous paper [Discrete Math. 310 (2010), 3334-3350]; that is, the question of determining the minimum order of a graph in the set of r-regular bipartite graphs of pair length k. We solve the problem for all positive integers k and r except for the case when both k >= 5 and r >= 3 are odd. For the case that is still open, we provide bounds on the minimum order concerned. Also we post a conjecture on the minimum order of a cubic bipartite graph of pair length k for any odd number k > 1.

Abstract:<p>Consider the random process in which the edges of a graph <math>G</math> are added one by one in a random order. A classical result states that if <math>G</math> is the complete graph <math>K2n</math> or the complete bipartite graph <math>Kn,n</math>, then typically a perfect matching appears at the moment at which the last isolated vertex disappears. We extend this result to arbitrary <math>k</math>‐regular bipartite graphs <math>G</math> on <math>2n</math> vertices for all <math>k=ω(nlog1/3n)</math>. Surprisingly, this is not the case for smaller values of <math>k</math>. Using a construction due to Goel, Kapralov, and Khanna, we show that there exist bipartite <math>k</math>‐regular graphs in which the last isolated vertex disappears long before a perfect matching appears.</p>

Covering the edges of a graph with perfect matchings

Abstract:An $r$-graph is an $r$-regular graph with no odd cut of size less than $r$. A well-celebrated result due to Lovász says that for such graphs the linear system $Ax = \textbf{1}$ has a solution in $\mathbb{Z}/2$, where $A$ is the $0,1$ edge to perfect matching incidence matrix. Note that we allow $x$ to have negative entries. In this paper, we present an improved version of Lovász's result, proving that, in fact, there is a solution $x$ with all entries being either integer or $+1/2$ and corresponding to a linearly independent set of perfect matchings. Moreover, the total number of $+1/2$'s is at most $6k$, where $k$ is the number of Petersen bricks in the tight cut decomposition of the graph.

Odd Covers of Complete Graphs and Hypergraphs

Abstract:The `odd cover number' of a complete graph is the smallest size of a family of complete bipartite graphs that covers each edge an odd number of times. For $n$ odd, Buchanan, Clifton, Culver, Nie, O'Neill, Rombach and Yin showed that the odd cover number of $K_n$ is equal to $(n+1)/2$ or $(n+3)/2$, and they conjectured that it is always $(n+1)/2$. We prove this conjecture. For $n$ even, Babai and Frankl showed that the odd cover number of $K_n$ is always at least $n/2$, and the above authors and Radhakrishnan, Sen and Vishwanathan gave some values of $n$ for which equality holds. We give some new examples. Our constructions arise from some very symmetric constructions for the corresponding problem for complete hypergraphs. Thus the odd cover number of the complete 3-graph $K_n^{(3)}$ is the smallest number of complete 3-partite 3-graphs such that each 3-set is in an odd number of them. We show that the odd cover number of $K_n^{(3)}$ is exactly $n/2$ for even $n$, and we show that for odd $n$ it is $(n-1)/2$ for infinitely many values of $n$. We also show that for $r=3$ and $r=4$ the odd cover number of $K_n^{(r)}$ is strictly less than the partition number, answering a question of Buchanan, Clifton, Culver, Nie, O'Neill, Rombach and Yin for those values of $r$.

Abstract:The strong matching preclusion number of a graph is the minimum number of vertices and edges whose deletion results in a graph that has neither perfect matchings nor almost perfect matchings. The strong matching preclusion is a well-studied measure for the network invulnerability in the event of edge failure. In this paper, we obtain the strong matching preclusion number for a class of arrangement graphs and categorize their the strong matching preclusion set, which are a supplement of known results.

Abstract:An ordered matching of size $n$ is a graph on a linearly ordered vertex set $V$, $|V|=2n$, consisting of $n$ pairwise disjoint edges. There are three different ordered matchings of size two on $V=\{1,2,3,4\}$: an alignment $\{1,2\},\{3,4\}$, a nesting $\{1,4\},\{2,3\}$, and a crossing $\{1,3\},\{2,4\}$. Accordingly, there are three basic homogeneous types of ordered matchings (with all pairs of edges arranged in the same way) which we call, respectively, lines, stacks, and waves. We prove an Erdős-Szekeres type result guaranteeing in every ordered matching of size $n$ the presence of one of the three basic sub-structures of a given size. In particular, one of them must be of size at least $n^{1/3}$. We also investigate the size of each of the three sub-structures in a random ordered matching. Additionally, the former result is generalized to $3$-uniform ordered matchings. Another type of unavoidable patterns we study are twins, that is, pairs of order-isomorphic, disjoint sub-matchings. By relating to a similar problem for permutations, we prove that the maximum size of twins that occur in every ordered matching of size $n$ is $O\left(n^{2/3}\right)$ and $\Omega\left(n^{3/5}\right)$. We conjecture that the upper bound is the correct order of magnitude and confirm it for almost all matchings. In fact, our results for twins are proved more generally for $r$-multiple twins, $r\ge2$.

Abstract:We study the problem of finding a minimum $k$-critical-bipartite graph of order $(n,m)$: a bipartite graph $G=(U,V;E)$, with $|U|=n$, $|V|=m$, and $n>m>1$, which is $k$-critical-bipartite, and the tuple $(|E|, \Delta_U, \Delta_V)$, where $\Delta_U$ and $\Delta_V$ denote the maximum degree in $U$ and $V$, respectively, is lexicographically minimum over all such graphs. $G$ is $k$-critical-bipartite if deleting at most $k=n-m$ vertices from $U$ yields $G'$ that has a complete matching, i.e., a matching of size $m$. Cichacz and Suchan solved the problem for biregular bipartite graphs. Here, we extend their results to bipartite graphs that are not biregular. We also prove tight lower bounds on the connectivity of $k$-critical-bipartite graphs.

Abstract:A graph is called odd (respectively, even) if every vertex has odd (respectively, even) degree. Gallai proved that every graph can be partitioned into two even induced subgraphs, or into an odd and an even induced subgraph. We refer to a partition into odd subgraphs as an odd colouring of G . Scott proved that a connected graph admits an odd colouring if and only if it has an even number of vertices. We say that a graph G is k ‐odd colourable if it can be partitioned into at most k odd induced subgraphs. The odd chromatic number of G , denoted by χ odd( G ) , is the minimum integer k for which G is k ‐odd colourable. We initiate the systematic study of odd colouring and odd chromatic number of graph classes. We first consider a question due to Scott, which states that every graph G of even order n has χ odd( G ) ≤ c n , for some positive constant c , by proving that this is indeed the case if G is restricted to having girth at least seven. We also show that any graph G whose all components have even order satisfies χ odd( G ) ≤ 2 Δ − 1 , where Δ is the maximum degree of G . Next, we show that certain interesting classes have bounded odd chromatic number. Our main results in this direction are that interval graphs, graphs of bounded modular‐width all have bounded odd chromatic number. In particular, every even interval graph is 6‐odd colourable, and every even graph is 3 m w ‐odd colourable, where m w is the modular width of a graph.

Abstract:This paper is about: (1) bounds on the number of cliques in a graph in a particular class, and (2) algorithms for listing all cliques in a graph. We present a simple algorithm that lists all cliques in an $n$-vertex graph in O(n) time per clique. For O(1)-degenerate graphs, such as graphs excluding a fixed minor, we describe a O(n) time algorithm for listing all cliques. We prove that graphs excluding a fixed odd-minor have $O(n^2)$ cliques (which is tight), and conclude a $O(n^3)$ time algorithm for listing all cliques.

Abstract:A perfect matching covering of a graph G is a set of perfect matchings of G such that every edge of G is contained in at least one member of it. Berge conjectured that every bridgeless cubic graph admits a perfect matching covering of order at most 5 (we call such a collection of perfect matchings a Berge covering of G). A cubic graph G is called a Kotzig graph if G has a 3-edge-coloring such that each pair of colors forms a hamiltonian circuit (introduced by R. Haggkvist, K. Markstrom, J Combin Theory Ser B 96 (2006), 183-206). In this article, we prove that if there is a vertex w of a cubic graph G such that G -w, the graph obtained from G - w by suppressing all degree two vertices is a Kotzig graph, then G hasa Berge covering. On $(k,g)$-Graphs without $(g+1)$-Cycles

Abstract:A $(k,g,\underline{g+1})$-graph is a $k$-regular graph of girth $g$ which does not contain cycles of length $g+1$. Such graphs are known to exist for all parameter pairs $k \geq 3, g \geq 3 $, and we focus on determining the orders $n(k,g,\underline{g+1})$ of the smallest $(k,g,\underline{g+1})$-graphs. This problem can be viewed as a special case of the previously studied Girth-Pair Problem, the problem of finding the order of a smallest $k$-regular graph in which the length of a smallest even length cycle and the length of a smallest odd length cycle are prescribed. When considering the case of an odd girth $g$, this problem also yields results towards the Cage Problem, the problem of finding the order of a smallest $k$-regular graph of girth $g$. We establish the monotonicity of the function $n(k,g,\underline{g+1})$ with respect to increasing $g$, and present universal lower bounds for the values $n(k,g,\underline{g+1})$. We propose an algorithm for generating all $(k,g,\underline{g+1})$-graphs on $n$ vertices, use this algorithm to determine several of the smaller values $n(k,g,\underline{g+1})$, and discuss various approaches to finding smallest $(k,g,\underline{g+1})$-graphs within several classes of highly symmetrical graphs.

Abstract:Let r ≥ 3 be an integer and G be a graph. Let δ ( G ) , Δ ( G ), α ( G ), and μ ( G ) denote the minimum degree, maximum degree, independence number, and matching number of G, respectively. Recently, Caro, Davila and Pepper proved δ ( G ) α ( G ) ≤ Δ ( G ) μ ( G ). Mohr and Rautenbach characterized the extremal graphs within the classes of all non-regular graphs and 3-regular graphs. In this note, we characterize the extremal graphs within the classes of all r-regular graphs in terms of the Gallai–Edmonds Structure Theorem, which extends Mohr and Rautenbach’s result.

Abstract:The notion of matching minors is a specialisation of minors fit for the study of graphs with perfect matchings. Matching minors have been used to give a structural description of bipartite graphs on which the number of perfect matchings can be computed efficiently, based on a result of Little, by McCuaig et al. in 1999. In this paper we generalise basic ideas from the graph minor series by Robertson and Seymour to the setting of bipartite graphs with perfect matchings. We introduce a version of Erdős-Pósa property for matching minors and find a direct link between this property and planarity. From this, it follows that a class of bipartite graphs with perfect matchings has bounded perfect matching width if and only if it excludes a planar matching minor. We also present algorithms for bipartite graphs of bounded perfect matching width for a matching version of the disjoint paths problem, matching minor containment, and for counting the number of perfect matchings. From our structural results, we obtain that recognising whether a bipartite graph G contains a fixed planar graph H as a matching minor, and that counting the number of perfect matchings of a bipartite graph that excludes a fixed planar graph as a matching minor are both polynomial time solvable.
