Abstract:In this letter we propose a new hybrid code called "RM-Polar" codes. This new codes are constructed by combining the construction of Reed-Muller (RM) code and Polar code. It has much larger minimum Hamming distance than Polar codes, therefore it has much better error performance than Polar codes.

Abstract:A new polar coding scheme for higher order modulation is presented. The proposed scheme is based on multi-level coding (MLC) with natural labeling, where the bit-level corresponding to the sign-bit is generated in dependence on the previous bit-levels, such that the modulated symbols are distributed according to a target non-uniform distribution resulting in a shaping gain. This is realized by replacing the polar encoder in the sign-bit level by a successive cancellation (SC) decoder, such that the overall complexity is not increased compared to a conventional MLC scheme with polar codes. Numerical simulations show significant performance improvements of the proposed approach compared to conventional transmission schemes with uniform symbol distribution. By using more complex decoders (e.g. SC list decoder), the proposed scheme outperforms Gallager's random coding bound.

Abstract:Reed-Muller (RM) codes and polar codes are generated by the same matrix $G_m= \bigl[\begin{smallmatrix}1 & 0 \\ 1 & 1 \\ \end{smallmatrix}\bigr]^{\otimes m}$ but using different subset of rows. RM codes select simply rows having largest weights. Polar codes select instead rows having the largest conditional mutual information proceeding top to down in $G_m$; while this is a more elaborate and channel-dependent rule, the top-to-down ordering has the advantage of making the conditional mutual information polarize, giving directly a capacity-achieving code on any binary memoryless symmetric channel (BMSC). RM codes are yet to be proved to have such property. In this paper, we reconnect RM codes to polarization theory. It is shown that proceeding in the RM code ordering, i.e., not top-to-down but from the lightest to the heaviest rows in $G_m$, the conditional mutual information again polarizes. We further demonstrate that it does so faster than for polar codes. This implies that $G_m$ contains another code, different than the polar code and called here the twin code, that is provably capacity-achieving on any BMSC. This proves a necessary condition for RM codes to achieve capacity on BMSCs. It further gives a sufficient condition if the rows with the largest conditional mutual information correspond to the heaviest rows, i.e., if the twin code is the RM code. We show here that the two codes bare similarity with each other and give further evidence that they are likely the same.

Abstract:A new polar coding scheme for higher order modulation is presented. An encoding method is proposed such that in combination with Gray labeled amplitude shift keying the channel input symbols have a desired non-uniform distribution, resulting in a shaping gain at the receiver compared with the conventional bit-interleaved coded modulation. The proposed scheme mainly affects the encoder, and the complexity increase at the receiver is negligible.

Abstract:Polarization, first introduced by Arikan, is a phenomenon that after some processing of a channel, the resulted channels are either almost clean channels or useless channels. In this paper we propose three schemes to polarize a MIMO channel and design the corresponding polar codes. In the first two schemes, the MIMO channel is decomposed into different independent channels, while in the third scheme, we analyze the performance to polarize the MIMO channel directly. In SCHEME ONE, we design corresponding polar code for each independent channel, and in SCHEME TWO, we propose a method to transmit messages cooperatively in these channels. Based on the theoretical analysis and the simulation results, the SCHEME TWO can achieve a lower frame error rate without sacrifice of coding rate and decoding delay.
Multi-RS Concatenated Polar Codes with Enhanced Interleaving and List Decoding

Abstract:Polar codes are the first provable capacity-achieving channel codes. Despite the splendid performance of long Polar codes, short Polar codes have relatively poor performance compared with other modern channel coding schemes (e.g., Turbo codes and LDPC). In this paper, we explore some practical methods to improve the performance of Polar codes with short to moderate codeword lengths. First, we use Reed Solomon (RS) codes as outer codes. With a specific interleaving strategy, we can concatenate multiple RS codes with one frame of Polar codes. Combining a strategy of allocating unequal RS code rates with the concatenation, different levels of protection are assigned based on the error pattern of successive cancellation list (SCL) decoders. Thus, the finite length performance will certainly be enhanced for this encoding scheme. Meanwhile, the memory size that the original SCL decoding procedure requires is reduced, and the increment of overall decoding complexity is small. Additionally, we propose an intra-frame interleaver to further enhance the performance by dispersing errors. Finally, we designed a list decoding scheme for the proposed multi-RS concatenated Polar codes. Depending on the soft information generated by an SCL decoder, we calculated the reliability of each RS symbol and conducted soft RS decoding. So, the overall performance was enhanced under this joint decoding strategy. Simulation results indicate that the bit error rate (BER) performance of short Polar codes can be well improved.
An Efficient Construction Method Based on Partial Distance of Polar Codes with Reed-Solomon Kernel

Abstract:Polar codes with Reed-Solomon (RS) kernel have great potential in next-generation communication systems due to their high polarization rate. In this paper, we study the polarization characteristics of RS polar codes and propose two types of partial orders (POs) for the synthesized channels, which are supported by validity proofs. By combining these partial orders, a Partial Distance-based Polarization Weight (PDPW) construction method is presented. The proposed method achieves comparable performance to Monte-Carlo simulations while requiring lower complexity. Additionally, a Minimum Polarization Weight Puncturing (MPWP) scheme for rate-matching is proposed to enhance its practical applicability in communication systems. Simulation results demonstrate that the RS polar codes based on the proposed PDPW construction outperform the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) NR polar codes in terms of standard code performance and rate-matching performance.

Deep Polar Codes

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel class of pre-transformed polar codes, termed as deep polar codes. We first present a deep polar encoder that harnesses a series of multi-layered polar transformations with varying sizes. Our approach to encoding enables a low-complexity implementation while significantly enhancing the weight distribution of the code. Moreover, our encoding method offers flexibility in rate-profiling, embracing a wide range of code rates and blocklengths. Next, we put forth a low-complexity decoding algorithm called successive cancellation list with backpropagation parity checks (SCL-BPC). This decoding algorithm leverages the parity check equations in the reverse process of the multi-layered pre-transformed encoding for SCL decoding. Additionally, we present a low-latency decoding algorithm that employs parallel-SCL decoding by treating partially pre-transformed bit patterns as additional frozen bits. Through simulations, we demonstrate that deep polar codes outperform existing pre-transformed polar codes in terms of block error rates across various code rates under short block lengths, while maintaining low encoding and decoding complexity. Furthermore, we show that concatenating deep polar codes with cyclic-redundancy-check codes can achieve the meta-converse bound of the finite block length capacity within 0.4 dB in some instances.

Abstract:In order to improve the problems that the minimum hamming weight (MHW) of the polar codes of the traditional Gaussian approximation (GA) construction is small and its performance is not good enough, an improved channel construction algorithm of polar codes based on frozen bits is proposed by combining the construction of the Reed-Muller (RM) code to effectively increase the MHW and analyzing the correcting and checking functions of the frozen bits in the successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding. The construction algorithm selects the channel with the smaller row weight corresponding to the information channel in the channel construction stage, and some channels are set as the frozen channels under the proposed frozen channel setting principle. So the proposed construction algorithm not only eliminates the channels with the smaller row weight and optimizes the distance spectrum of polar codes, but also makes full use of the checking ability of the frozen bit in SCL decoding to improve the error correction performance of polar codes. The polar codes constructed by this algorithm are named as FRM-polar codes. The simulation results show that the proposed FRM-polar codes have a larger performance gain than the RM-polar codes and the polar codes constructed by GA under different code-lengths. In addition, the proposed construction algorithm has the same complexity as the construction algorithm of the RM-polar codes.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a novel reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted coded cooperation system based on polar codes to pursue the ultra-reliable and global coverage transmission. Firstly, we establish the RIS-assisted coded cooperation system based on polar codes. The polar codes employed at the source and relay are jointly designed by Plotkin construction method, and the joint decoding is performed at the destination. Subsequently, we derive the theoretical expressions for ergodic capacity (EC) under Nakagami- fading channel model with central limit theorem (CLT) and Gamma approximation (GA). Specially, the closed-form expression for EC with finite code length is obtained by approximating its tight upper and lower bounds. Finally, theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate the superiorities of the proposed system compared to the existing schemes, and also reveal that the EC of the proposed system with finite code length approaches the ideal EC as the code length of polar codes increases.

Abstract:In this paper, we study polar codes from a practical point of view. In particular, we study concatenated polar codes and rate-compatible polar codes. First, we propose a concatenation scheme including polar codes and Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. We will show that our proposed scheme outperforms conventional concatenation schemes formed by LDPC and Reed-Solomon (RS) codes. We then study two rate-compatible coding schemes using polar codes. We will see that polar codes can be designed as universally capacity achieving rate-compatible codes over a set of physically degraded channels. We also study the effect of puncturing on polar codes to design rate-compatible codes.

Abstract:Polar codes with short code length under successive cancellation (SC) decoding are inferior to other advanced codes of similar block length. Although more sophisticated algorithms, such as SC list (SCL) decoding and SC stack (SCS) decoding were introduced to address the problem, the complexity of these algorithms has also increased. In this paper, we first propose a novel construction of Polar codes, named index modulated Polar (IM-Polar) codes. This scheme conveys information not only by the information bits in non-frozen channels as conventional Polar codes, but also by the indices of channels, which are activated according to the incoming bit stream. Moreover, we give a specific implementation of IM-Polar codes under cyclic redundancy check (CRC) aided SCL (CA-SCL) decoding. In this implementation, repetition-assisted encoding is employed to improve the accuracy of index detection. It is shown via simulations that the proposed implementation of IM-Polar codes can provide gain of 0.2 - 0.3 dB over the classical CRC-aided Polar (CA-Polar) codes with code rate 0.357 and code length 128 at the bit error ratio (BER) of 10(-4).

Abstract:An extension of polar codes is proposed, which allows some of the frozen symbols, called dynamic frozen symbols, to be data-dependent. A construction of polar codes with dynamic frozen symbols, being subcodes of extended BCH codes, is proposed. The proposed codes have higher minimum distance than classical polar codes, but still can be efficiently decoded using the successive cancellation algorithm and its extensions. The codes with Arikan, extended BCH and Reed-Solomon kernel are considered. The proposed codes are shown to outperform LDPC and turbo codes, as well as polar codes with CRC.

Abstract:$2^m$-ary modulation creates $m$ bit channels which are neither independent nor identical, and this causes problems when applying polar coding because polar codes are designed for independent identical channels. Different from the existing multi-level coding (MLC) and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) schemes, this paper provides a convolutional polar coded modulation (CPCM) method that preserves the low-complexity nature of BICM while offering improved spectral efficiency. Numerical results are given to show the good performance of the proposed method.
Iterative Multistage Decoding of Polar Code Based Multilevel Codes

Abstract:Some multilevel codes which are constructed based on polar codes have been introduced recently, and show good performance with elaborately designed rates at each level and special multistage decoder. However, the multistage decoding is usually implemented in a sequential manner, which might yield poor performance at lower levels since the corresponding component codes are decoded without any information from higher levels, and the decoding errors occurred at previous stages could hardly be corrected. Thus, an iterative multistage decoding algorithm for polar code based multilevel codes is introduced in this paper, which could further improve the performance by feeding the reliable information obtained at higher levels back to the first level, and correct the decoding errors occurred at lower levels. Our proposed algorithm has only moderate complexity, and it is found that, the first iteration contributes the most performance improvement.

Abstract:Polar codes, introduced by Arikan, achieve symmetric capacity of any discrete memoryless channels under low encoding and decoding complexity. Recently, non-binary polar codes have been investigated. In this paper, we calculate error probability of non-binary polar codes constructed on the basis of Reed-Solomon matrices by numerical simulations. It is confirmed that 4-ary polar codes have significantly better performance than binary polar codes on binary-input AWGN channel. We also discuss an interpretation of polar codes in terms of algebraic geometry codes, and further show that polar codes using Hermitian codes have asymptotically good performance.

Nested Symmetric Polar Codes

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a data-driven algorithm to design rate- and length-flexible polar codes. While the algorithm is very general, a particularly appealing use case is the design of codes for automorphism ensemble decoding (AED), a promising decoding algorithm for ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) and massive machine-type communications (mMTC) applications. To this end, theoretic results on nesting of symmetric polar codes are derived, which give hope in finding a fully nested, rate-compatible sequence suitable for AED. Using the proposed algorithms, such a flexible polar code design for automorphism ensemble successive cancellation (SC) decoding is constructed, outperforming existing code designs for AED and also the 5G polar code under cyclic redundancy check (CRC)-aided successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that any pre-transformation with an upper-triangular matrix (including cyclic redundancy check (CRC), parity-check (PC) and convolution code (CC) matrix) does not reduce the code minimum distance and an properly designed pre-transformation can reduce the number of codewords with the minimum distance. This explains that the pre-transformed polar codes can perform better than the Polar/RM codes.

Abstract:In this article, a hybrid decoding algorithm for Reed–Muller codes is presented. Unlike the conventional algorithm, the presented algorithm ends recursive decomposition when [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] appeared. A simplified maximum-likelihood algorithm based on fast Hadamard transform is also exploited to decode the systematic code through its special structure. As a result, the presented hybrid decoding algorithm reduces the number of floating-point multiplications significantly as compared with the conventional algorithms. In addition, the new algorithm has better error performance than the conventional ones.

Abstract:Polar codes are the first class of channel codes achieving the symmetric capacity of the binary-input discrete memoryless channels (B-DMC) with efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. But the weight spectrum of polar codes is relatively poor compared to Reed-Muller (RM) codes, which degrades their maximum-likehood (ML) performance. Pre-transformation with an upper-triangular matrix (including cyclic redundancy check (CRC), parity-check (PC) and polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes), improves weight spectrum while retaining polarization. In this paper, the weight spectrum of upper-triangular pre-transformed polar codes is mathematically analyzed. In particular, we focus on calculating the number of low-weight codewords due to their impact on error-correction performance. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the analysis.

Abstract:Polar codes with memory (PCM) are proposed in this paper: a pair of consecutive code blocks containing a controlled number of mutual information bits. The shared mutual information bits of the succeeded block can help the failed block to recover. The underlying polar codes can employ any decoding scheme such as the successive cancellation (SC) decoding (PCM-SC), the belief propagation (BP) decoding (PCM-BP), and the successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding (PCM-SCL). The analysis shows that the packet error rate (PER) of PCM decreases to the order of PER squared while maintaining the same complexity as the underlying polar codes. Simulation results indicate that for PCM-SC, the PER is comparable to (less than 0.3 dB) the stand-alone SCL decoding with two lists for the block length $N=256$. The PER of PCM-SCL with $L$ lists can match that of the stand-alone SCL decoding with $2L$ lists. Two hardware decoders for PCM are also implemented: the in-serial (IS) decoder and the low-latency interleaved (LLI) decoder. For $N=256$, synthesis results show that in the worst case, the latency of the PCM LLI decoder is only $16.1\%$ of the adaptive SCL decoder with $L=2$, while the throughput is improved by 13 times compared to it.
