In the recent survey paper, finding the necessary and/or sufficient conditions for a sign pattern to allow nilpotence of index was raised as an open question by Catral et al. In this paper, some characterizations of tree sign patterns that allow nilpotence of index are obtained.

Abstract:Signed difference sets have interesting applications in communications and coding theory. A $(v,k,\lambda)$-difference set in a finite group $G$ of order $v$ is a subset $D$ of $G$ with $k$ distinct elements such that the expressions $xy^{-1}$ for all distinct two elements $x,y\in D$, represent each non-identity element in $G$ exactly $\lambda$ times. A $(v,k,\lambda)$-signed difference set is a generalization of a $(v,k,\lambda)$-difference set $D$, which satisfies all properties of $D$, but has a sign for each element in $D$. We will show some new existence results for signed difference sets by using partial difference sets, product methods, and cyclotomic classes.

Abstract:We consider polynomials $Q:=\sum _{j=0}^da_jx^j$, $a_j\in \mathbb{R}^*$, with all roots real. When the {\em sign pattern} $\sigma (Q):=({\rm sgn}(a_d),{\rm sgn}(a_{d-1})$, $\ldots$, ${\rm sgn}(a_0))$ has $\tilde{c}$ sign changes, the polynomial $Q$ has $\tilde{c}$ positive and $d-\tilde{c}$ negative roots. We suppose the moduli of these roots distinct. The {\em order} of these moduli is defined when in their string as points of the positive half-axis one marks the places of the moduli of negative roots. A sign pattern $\sigma^0$ is {\em universal} when for any possible order of the moduli there exists a polynomial $Q$ with $\sigma (Q)=\sigma^0$ and with this order of the moduli of its roots. We show that when the polynomial $P_{m,n}:=(x-1)^m(x+1)^n$ has no vanishing coefficients, the sign pattern $\sigma (P_{m,n})$ is universal. We also study the question when $P_{m,n}$ can have vanishing coefficients.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the topological properties and the gap sequences of Bedford-McMullen sets. First, we introduce a topological condition, the component separation condition (CSC), and a geometric condition, the exponential rate condition (ERC). Then we prove that the CSC implies the ERC, and that both of them are sufficient conditions for obtaining the asymptotic estimate of gap sequences. We also explore topological properties of Bedford-McMullen sets and prove that all normal Bedford-McMullen sets with infinitely many connected components satisfy the CSC, from which we obtain the asymptotic estimate of the gap sequences of Bedford-McMullen sets without any restrictions. Finally, we apply our result to Lipschitz equivalence.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a sharp Mei's Lemma with assuming the bases of the underlying general dyadic grids are different. As a byproduct, we specify all the possible cases of adjacent general dyadic systems with different bases. The proofs have connections with certain number-theoretic properties.

Abstract:Characterization of sign patterns that allow diagonalizability has been a long-standing open problem. In this article, necessary and sufficient conditions for a sign pattern to allow diagonalizability are obtained, in terms of allowing related properties. Some properties of normal sign patterns are considered. In particular, it is shown that normal sign patterns of order up to 3 allow diagonalizability. Two combinatorial necessary conditions for a sign pattern to allow diagonalizability are also presented.

Abstract:Huang and Liu [Generalized scrambling indices of primitive a digraph, Linear Algebra Appl. 433 (2010), pp. 1798–1808] gave the definitions of the generalized μ-scrambling indices and the generalized scrambling indices of a primitive digraph and also provided some exact lower and upper bounds for the generalized scrambling indices of various classes of primitive digraphs. In this paper, we give some exact lower and upper bounds for the generalized μ-scrambling indices of various classes of primitive digraphs.

Abstract:We analyze a combinatorial rule satisfied by the signs of principal minors of a real symmetric matrix. The sign patterns satisfying this rule are equivalent to uniform oriented Lagrangian matroids. We first discuss their structure and symmetries and then study their asymptotics, proving that almost all of them are not representable by real symmetric matrices. We offer several conjectures and experimental results concerning representable sign patterns and the topology of their representation spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct the so-called q-Schur modules as left principal ideals of cyclotomic q-Schur algebras, and prove that they are isomorphic to those cell modules defined in [3] and [9] in any level r. After that, mainly, we prove that these q-Schur modules are free and construct their bases. This result gives new versions of some known results such as standard basis and the branching theorem. With the help of this realization and the new basis, we give a new proof of the Branch rule of Weyl modules which was first discovered by Wada in [13].

Abstract:An n-by-n sign pattern A is said to be potentially power-positive if there exists some A is an element of Q(A) such that A is power-positive, i.e., A(k) > 0 for some positive integer k. Catral, Hogben, Olesky and van den Driessche [Sign patterns that require or allow power-positivity, Electron. J. Linear Algebra, 19 (2010), 121-128] investigated the sign patterns that require or allow power-positivity. It has been shown that an n-by-n sign pattern A is potentially power-positive if and only if either A or -A is potentially eventually positive. But as the identification of sufficient and necessary conditions for potentially eventually positive sign patterns remains open, the characterization of potentially power-positive sign patterns is still open. In this paper, we introduce the minimal potentially power-positive sign patterns to classify the potentially power-positive sign patterns. Some properties of minimal potentially power-positive sign patterns are presented. It is shown that for an n-by-n sign pattern A with at most n+1 negative entries, A is minimal potentially power-positive if and only if either A or -A is minimal potentially eventually positive. Finally, we classify the minimal potentially power-positive sign patterns of order n <= 3.

Abstract:For an asymmetric sign pattern matrix P , we analyze the sign characteristic of P with the help of a signed digraph in this paper. The maximal SNS-pattern matrix for a signed digraph is the maximal sign-nonsingular sub-pattern among all real matrices having the given sign pattern P . In this paper, SNS problems for signed digraphs are studied by converting a signed digraphΓinto a signed bipartite graph G(U, V ). We propose the algorithms for searching for a sub-signed bipartite graph G(U′, V′) with the maximum perfect matching M′ corresponding to every set of disjoint M′-interlacing cycles, which contain an even number of M′-interlacing e-cycles. The maximal SNS-pattern for a signed digraph is obtained according to algorithms.

Abstract:Expansions in non-integer bases have been extensively investigated since a pioneering work of Rényi. We introduce a more general framework of alphabet-base systems that also includes Pedicini's general alphabets and the multiple-base expansions of Neunhäuserer and Li. We extend the Parry type lexicographic theory to this setup, and we improve and generalize various former results on unique expansions.

Abstract:Let G be a permutation group on a finite set . The base size of G is the minimal size of a subset of with trivial pointwise stabiliser in G. In this paper, we extend earlier work of Fawcett by determining the precise base size of every finite primitive permutation group of diagonal type. In particular, this is the first family of primitive groups arising in the O'Nan–Scott theorem for which the exact base size has been computed in all cases. Our methods also allow us to determine all the primitive groups of diagonal type with a unique regular suborbit.

Sign regular matrices and variation diminution: single-vector tests and characterizations, following Schoenberg, Gantmacher-Krein, and Motzkin

Abstract:Variation diminution (VD) is a fundamental property in total positivity theory, first studied in 1912 by Fekete-Pólya for one-sided Pólya frequency sequences, followed by Schoenberg, and by Motzkin who characterized sign regular (SR) matrices using VD and some rank hypotheses. A classical theorem by Gantmacher-Krein characterized the strictly sign regular (SSR) $m \times n$ matrices for $m>n$ using this property. In this article we strengthen these results by characterizing all $m \times n$ SSR matrices using VD. We further characterize strict sign regularity of a given sign pattern in terms of VD together with a natural condition motivated by total positivity. We then refine Motzkin's characterization of SR matrices by omitting the rank condition and specifying the sign pattern. This concludes a line of investigation on VD started by Fekete-Pólya [Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo 1912] and continued by Schoenberg [Math. Z. 1930], Motzkin [PhD thesis, 1936], Gantmacher-Krein [1950 book], Brown-Johnstone-MacGibbon [J. Amer. Stat. Assoc. 1981], and Choudhury [Bull. London Math. Soc. 2022, Bull. Sci. Math. 2023]. In fact we show stronger characterizations, by employing single test vectors with alternating sign coordinates - i.e., lying in the alternating bi-orthant. We also show that test vectors chosen from any other orthant will not work.
