Abstract:For half a century, Mackey and Green functors have been successfully used to model the induction and restriction maps which are ubiquitous in the representation theory of finite groups. In the examples, the latter maps are typically distilled in some way from induction and restriction functors between additive categories. This naturally leads to the notions of Mackey and Green 2-functors and to axioms which better capture this underlying layer of information. Such structures have been used in algebra, geometry and topology for a long time. We survey examples and applications of this young (yet arguably overdue) theory.

Abstract:We characterize cofibrant objects in the category of functors indexed in a filtered poset and we show that these objects are acyclic. As a consequence, we show that Mackey functors over posets are also acyclic, where we define this type of Mackey functors mimicking the classical notion. As application, we study homotopy colimits over posets and we give a homology decomposition for the classifying space of the Bianchi group $\Gamma_1$.

Splitting rational incomplete Mackey functors

Abstract:Inspired by equivariant homotopy theory, equivariant algebra studies generalisations of G-Mackey functors that do not have all transfer maps (also known as induction maps), for G a finite group. These incomplete Mackey functors have interesting and subtle properties that are more complicated than classical algebra. The levels of incompleteness that occur are indexed by simple combinatorial data known as transfers systems for G, which are refinements of the subgroup relation satisfying certain axioms. The aim of this paper is to generalise the Greenlees-May and Thevenaz-Webb splitting result of rational G-Mackey functors to the incomplete case. By calculating idempotents of the rational incomplete Burnside ring of G, we find maximal splitting of the category of rational incomplete G-Mackey functors. These splittings are determined by maps of the form (H to G) in the transfer system. We give an intrinsic definition of the split pieces beyond the idempotent description in order to understand what is the minimal information needed to determine an arbitrary rational incomplete G-Mackey functor. We end the paper with a series of examples of possible splittings and illustrate how simpler transfer systems have fewer terms in the splitting but the split pieces are more complicated.

Biset functors for categories

Abstract:We introduce the theory of biset functors defined on finite categories. Previously, biset functors have been defined on groups, and in that context they are closely related to Mackey functors. Standard examples on groups include representation rings, the Burnside ring and group cohomology. The new theory allows these same examples, but defined for arbitrary finite categories, thus including, for instance, the representation rings of finite EI categories, among which are posets, and the free categories associated to quivers without oriented cycles. Group homology with trivial coefficients is replaced by the homology of the category with constant coefficients and this is a biset functor when bisets that are representable on one side are used. We give a definition of the Burnside ring of an arbitrary finite category. It is a biset functor that plays a key role throughout the theory. We discuss properties of the simple biset functors on categories, including their parametrization and calculation. We describe the symmetric monoidal structure on biset functors, Green biset functors and an approach to fibered biset functors for categories, together with the technicalities these entail. Various examples are given, the most elaborate showing a connection between the correspondence functors of Bouc and Thévenaz and biset functors on Boolean lattices.

Abstract:We develop and extend the theory of Mackey functors as an application of enriched category theory. We define Mackey functors on a lextensive category $\E$ and investigate the properties of the category of Mackey functors on $\E$. We show that it is a monoidal category and the monoids are Green functors. Mackey functors are seen as providing a setting in which mere numerical equations occurring in the theory of groups can be given a structural foundation. We obtain an explicit description of the objects of the Cauchy completion of a monoidal functor and apply this to examine Morita equivalence of Green functors.

Abstract:In this paper we give a definition of (centric) Mackey functor over a fusion system which generalizes the notion of Mackey functor over a group. In this context we prove that, given some conditions on a related ring, the centric Burnside ring over a fusion system (as defined by Diaz and Libman) acts on any centric Mackey functor. We also prove that the Green correspondence holds for centric Mackey functors over fusion systems. As a means to prove this we introduce a notion of relative projectivity for centric Mackey functors over fusion systems and provide a decomposition of a particular product in $\mathcal{O}\left(\mathcal{F}^c\right)_{\sqcup}$ in terms of the product in $\mathcal{O}\left(N_{\mathcal{F}}\left(H\right)^c\right)_{\sqcup}$.

Homotopy Theory of Enriched Mackey Functors

Abstract:Mackey functors provide the coefficient systems for equivariant cohomology theories. More generally, enriched presheaf categories provide a classification and organization for many stable model categories of interest. Changing enrichments along $K$-theory multifunctors provides an important tool for constructing spectral Mackey functors from Mackey functors enriched in algebraic structures such as permutative categories. This work gives a detailed development of diagrams, presheaves, and Mackey functors enriched over closed multicategories. Change of enrichment, including the relevant compositionality, is treated with care. This framework is applied to the homotopy theory of enriched diagram and Mackey functor categories, including equivalences of homotopy theories induced by $K$-theory multifunctors. Particular applications of interest include diagrams and Mackey functors enriched in pointed multicategories, permutative categories, and symmetric spectra.

A higher Mackey functor description of algebras over an $N_{\infty}$-operad

Abstract:Suppose $G$ is a finite group. In this paper, we construct an equivalence between the $\infty$-category of algebras over an $N_{\infty}$-operad $\mathcal{O}$ associated to a $G$-indexing system $\mathcal{I}$ and the corresponding $\infty$-category of higher incomplete $\mathcal{I}$-Mackey functors with value in spaces. We use the universal property of the incomplete $(2, 1)$-category of spans of finite $G$-sets $\mathscr{A}_{\mathcal{I}}$ to construct a functor from $\mathscr{A}_{\mathcal{I}}$ to the $2$-category of $\mathcal{I}$-normed symmetric monoidal categories of Rubin. We then show that the left Kan extension of the composition of this functor with the core functor is an equivalence.

Equivalence of Applicative Functors and Multifunctors

Abstract:McBride and Paterson introduced Applicative functors to Haskell, which are equivalent to the lax monoidal functors (with strength) of category theory. Applicative functors F are presented via idiomatic application $\_\circledast\_ : F (A \to B) \to F A \to F B$ and laws that are a bit hard to remember. Capriotti and Kaposi observed that applicative functors can be conceived as multifunctors, i.e., by a family liftA$_n$ : $(A_1 \to ... \to A_n \to C) \to F A_1 \to ... \to F A_n \to F C$ of zipWith-like functions that generalize pure $(n=0)$, fmap $(n=1)$ and liftA2 $(n=2)$. This reduces the associated laws to just the first functor law and a uniform scheme of second (multi)functor laws, i.e., a composition law for liftA. In this note, we rigorously prove that applicative functors are in fact equivalent to multifunctors, by interderiving their laws.

Abstract:By results of Rognerud, a source algebra equivalence between two p p -blocks of finite groups induces an equivalence between the categories of cohomological Mackey functors associated with these blocks, and a splendid derived equivalence between two blocks induces a derived equivalence between the corresponding categories of cohomological Mackey functors. We prove this by giving an intrinsic description of cohomological Mackey functors of a block in terms of the source algebras of the block, and then using this description to construct explicit two-sided tilting complexes realising the above mentioned derived equivalence. We show further that a splendid stable equivalence of Morita type between two blocks induces an equivalence between the categories of cohomological Mackey functors which vanish at the trivial group. We observe that the module categories of a block, the category of cohomological Mackey functors, and the category of cohomological Mackey functors which vanish at the trivial group arise in an idempotent recollement. Finally, we extend a result of Tambara on the finitistic dimension of cohomological Mackey functors to blocks.

Abstract:We study the structure of the category of representations of $\mathbf{FA}$, the category of finite sets and all maps, mostly working over a field of characteristic zero. This category is not semi-simple and exhibits interesting features. We first construct the simple representations, recovering the classification given by Wiltshire-Gordon. The construction given here also yields explicit descriptions of the indecomposable projectives. These results are used to give a convenient set of projective generators of the category of representations of $\mathbf{FA}$ and hence a Morita equivalence result. This is used to explain how to calculate the multiplicities of the composition factors of an arbitrary object, based only on its underlying $\mathbf{FB}$-representation, where $\mathbf{FB}$ is the category of finite sets and bijections. This is applied to show how to calculate the morphism spaces between projectives in our chosen set of generators, as well as for a closely related family of objects (the significance of which can be shown by relative nonhomogeneous Koszul duality theory).

Ideals of some Green biset functors

Abstract:In this article, we describe the lattice of ideals of some Green biset functors. We consider Green biset functors which satisfy that each evaluation is a finite dimensional split semisimple commutative algebra and use the idempotents in these evaluations to characterize any ideal of these Green biset functors. For this we will give the definition of M C-group, this definition generalizes that of a B-group, given for the Burnside functor. Given a Green biset functor A, with the above hypotheses, the set of all M C-groups of A has a structure of a poset and we prove that there exists an isomorphism of lattices between the set of ideals of A and the set of upward closed subsets of the M C-groups of A.

Abstract:We establish Green equivalences for all Mackey 2-functors, without assuming Krull-Schmidt. By running through the examples of Mackey 2-functors, we recover all variants of the Green equivalence and Green correspondence known in representation theory and obtain new ones in several other contexts. Such applications include equivariant stable homotopy theory in topology and equivariant sheaves in geometry.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group and let k be a field. Our purpose is to investigate the simple modules for the double Burnside ring kB(G,G). It turns out that they are evaluations at G of simple biset functors. For a fixed finite group H, we introduce a suitable bilinear form on kB(G,H) and we prove that the quotient of kB(-,H) by the radical of the bilinear form is a semi-simple functor. This allows for a description of the evaluation of simple functors, hence of simple modules for the double Burnside ring.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is threefold: Firstly, we propose some enhancements to the existing definition of 6-functor formalisms. Secondly, we systematically study the category of kernels, which is a certain 2-category attached to every 6-functor formalism. It provides powerful new insights into the internal structure of the 6-functor formalism and allows to abstractly define important finiteness conditions, recovering well-known examples from the literature. Finally, we apply our methods to the theory of smooth representations of $p$-adic Lie groups and, as an application, construct a canonical anti-involution on derived Hecke algebras generalizing results of Schneider--Sorensen. In an appendix we provide the necessary background on $\infty$-categories, higher algebra, enriched $\infty$-categories and $(\infty,2)$-categories. Among others we prove several new results on adjunctions in an $(\infty,2)$-category and in particular show that passing to the adjoint morphism is a functorial operation.

Abstract:We present the notion of "cyclic double multicategory", as a structure in which to organise multivariable adjunctions and mates. The classic example of a 2-variable adjunction is the hom/tensor/cotensor trio of functors; we generalise this situation to n+1 functors of n variables. Furthermore, we generalise the mates correspondence, which enables us to pass between natural transformations involving left adjoints to those involving right adjoints. While the standard mates correspondence is described using an isomorphism of double categories, the multivariable version requires the framework of "double multicategories". Moreover, we show that the analogous isomorphisms of double multicategories give a cyclic action on the multimaps, yielding the notion of "cyclic double multicategory". The work is motivated by and applied to Riehl's approach to algebraic monoidal model categories.

Semantics of multimodal adjoint type theory

Abstract:We show that contrary to appearances, Multimodal Type Theory (MTT) over a 2-category M can be interpreted in any M-shaped diagram of categories having, and functors preserving, M-sized limits, without the need for extra left adjoints. This is achieved by a construction called "co-dextrification" that co-freely adds left adjoints to any such diagram, which can then be used to interpret the "context lock" functors of MTT. Furthermore, if any of the functors in the diagram have right adjoints, these can also be internalized in type theory as negative modalities in the style of FitchTT. We introduce the name Multimodal Adjoint Type Theory (MATT) for the resulting combined general modal type theory. In particular, we can interpret MATT in any finite diagram of toposes and geometric morphisms, with positive modalities for inverse image functors and negative modalities for direct image functors.
