Abstract:Mordell equations are celebrated equations within number theory and are named after Louis Mordell, an American-born British mathematician, known for his pioneering research in number theory. In this paper, we discover all Mordell equations of the form $y^2 = x^3 + k$, where $k \in \mathbb Z$, with exactly $|k|$ integral solutions. We also discover explicit bounds for Mordell equations, parameterized families of elliptic curves and twists on elliptic curves. Using the connection between Mordell curves and binary cubic forms, we improve the lower bound for the number of integral solutions of a Mordell curve by looking at a pair of curves with unusually high rank.

Explicit bounds for the solutions of superelliptic equations over number fields

Abstract:Let $f$ be a polynomial with coefficients in the ring $O_S$ of $S$-integers of a number field $K$, $b$ a non-zero $S$-integer, and $m$ an integer $\ge 2$. We consider the equation $( \star )$: $f(x) = b y^m$ in $x,y \in O_S$. Under the well-known LeVeque condition, we give fully explicit upper bounds in terms of $K, S, f, m$ and the $S$-norm of $b$ for the heights of the solutions $x$ of the equation $( \star)$. Further, we give an explicit bound $C$ in terms of $K, S, f$ and the $S$-norm of $b$ such that if $m > C$ the equation $(\star)$ has only solutions with $y = 0$ or a root of unity. Our results are more detailed versions of work of Trelina, Brindza, Shorey and Tijdeman, Voutier and Bugeaud, and extend earlier results of Bérczes, Evertse, and Győry to polynomials with multiple roots. In contrast with the previous results, our bounds depend on the $S$-norm of $b$ instead of its height.

Abstract:Consider a quasi-linear system of two Klein–Gordon equations with masses m1, m2. We prove that when m1≠2m2 and m2≠2m1, such a system has global solutions for small, smooth, compactly supported Cauchy data. This extends a result proved by Sunagawa (J. Differential Equations 192 (2) (2003) 308) in the semi-linear case. Moreover, we show that global existence holds true also when m1=2m2 and a convenient null condition is satisfied by the nonlinearities.

Abstract:We prove that every subset of $\{1,\dots, N\}$ which does not contain any solutions to the equation $x+y+z=3w$ has at most $\exp(-c(\log N)^{1/5+o(1)})N$ elements, for some $c>0$. This theorem improves upon previous estimates. Additionally, our method has the potential to yield an optimal estimate for this problem that matches the known Behrend's lower estimate. Our approach relies on a new result on almost-periodicity of convolutions.

Abstract:It is well known that for an elliptic equation of m-th order denned in a bounded domain, the solution is in Ok+m’i"f if the right hand side is in 0*+7, where Ok+y function means a function in Ok class, and all its k-ih derivatives satisty Holder condition with index y（0＜7＜!）（see [1]）. This conclusion does not work in the critical cases 7=0, 1. This paper is devoted to study the "smoothness gain" of solutions in these critical cases. Our technique stems from [2], and the more delicate analysis offers us the finer results.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly establish the existence of at least three non-trivial solutions for a class of nonhomogeneous quasilinear elliptic systems with Dirichlet boundary value or Neumann boundary value in a bounded domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^N $ and $N\geq 1$. We exploit the method which is based on [6]. This method let us obtain the concrete open interval about the parameter $\lambda$. Since the quasilinear term depends on $u$ and $\nabla u$, it is necessary for our proofs to use the theory of monotone operators and the skill of adding one dimension to space.

Abstract:Let A(n) be a $k\times s$ matrix and $m(n)$ be a $k$ dimensional vector, where all entries of A(n) and $m(n)$ are integer-valued polynomials in $n$. Suppose that $$t(m(n)|A(n))=#\{x\in\mathbb{Z}_{+}^{s}\mid A(n)x=m(n)\}$$ is finite for each $n\in \mathbb{N}$, where $Z_+$ is the set of nonnegative integers. This paper conjectures that $t(m(n)|A(n))$ is an integer-valued quasi-polynomial in $n$ for $n$ sufficiently large and verifies the conjecture in several cases.

On the number of monochromatic solutions to multiplicative equations

Abstract:The following question was asked by Prendiville: given an $r$-colouring of the interval $\{2, \dotsc, N\}$, what is the minimum number of monochromatic solutions of the equation $xy = z$? For $r=2$, we show that there are always asymptotically at least $(1/2\sqrt{2}) N^{1/2} \log N$ monochromatic solutions, and that the leading constant is sharp. For $r=3$ and $r=4$ we obtain tight results up to a multiplicative logarithmic factor. We also provide bounds for more colours and other multiplicative equations.

Counting solutions to invariant equations in dense sets

Abstract:We prove a lower bound of exp(-C (log(2/alpha))^7)N^{k-1} to the number of solutions of an invariant equation in k variables, contained in a set of density alpha. Moreover, we give a Behrend-type construction for the same problem with the number of solutions of a convex equation bounded above by exp(-c (log(2/alpha))^2)N^{k-1}. Furthermore, improving the result of Schoen and Sisask, we show that if a set does not contain any non-trivial solutions to an equation of length at least 2(3^{m+1})+2 for some positive integer m, then its size is at most exp(-c(log N)^{1/(6+gamma)})N, where gamma = 2^{1-m}.

Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:We consider the elliptic problem $$ -\Delta u-\lambda u=a(x) g(u), $$ with $a(x)$ sign-changing and $g(u)$ behaving like $u^p$, $p> 1$. Under suitable conditions on $g(u)$ and $a(x)$, we extend the multiplicity, existence and nonexistence results known to hold for this equation on a bounded domain (with standard homogeneous boundary conditions) to the case that the bounded domain is replaced by the entire space $\mathbb R^N$. More precisely, we show that there exists $\Lambda> 0$ such that this equation on $\mathbb R^N$ has no positive solution for $\lambda> \Lambda$, at least two positive solutions for $\lambda\in (0,\Lambda)$, and at least one positive solution for $\lambda\in (-\infty,0]\cup\{\Lambda\}$. Our approach is based on some descriptions of mountain pass solutions of semilinear elliptic problems on bounded domains obtained by a special version of the mountain pass theorem. These results are of independent interests.

Abstract:In this paper, for the solutions of two elliptic equations we find the auxiliary curvature functions which attain respective minimum on the boundary. These results are the generalization of the classical ones in Makar-Limanov [17] for the torsion equation and Acker et al. [1] for the first eigenfunction of the Laplacian in convex domains of dimension 2. Then we get the new proof of the specific convexity of the solutions of the above two elliptic equations. As a consequence, for the elliptic equation upsilon Delta upsilon = -(1 + vertical bar del upsilon vertical bar(2)) in a smooth, bounded and strictly convex domain Omega in R-n with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary value condition, we also get a sharply lower bound estimate of the Gaussian curvature for the solution surface by the curvature of the boundary of the domain.

Abstract:We establish several bounds for solutions to elliptic/parabolic cross-diffusion systems of $m$ equations ($m\ge2$) on 2d/3d domains $\Og$. We settle the existence and global existence problems in these cases and also provide new counter-examples for the case of general dimensions. Most importantly, we prove that when $m=N=3$, the thinness of $\Og$ in $\RR^3$ is sufficient and necessary. When $m$ is arbitrary and $N=3$, we establish global existence results for nonlinear cross-diffusion systems (the case of the scalar semilinear equation was considered in the literature but the classical methods do not seem to be applicable here).

First, we establish the representation formula of solutions to the above inhomogeneous biharmonic Dirichlet problem, and then discuss the Heinz-Schwarz type inequalities and the modulus of continuity of the solutions.
