Abstract:During the last several years, Artin, Jorgensen, Stafford, Yekutieli, and others have generalized many homological results from the commutative case to the noncommutative connected graded case [AZ, SZ1, Jo1, Jo2, Ye]. In this paper we generalize some of those to the noncommutative local case. Our main interest is on noetherian local PI (polynomial identity) algebras, though some results hold in a more general setting. Throughout A is an algebra over a base field k, I is its Jacobson radical, and A0 = A/I. If A0 is artinian, A is called semilocal. If A0 is a simple artinian algebra (respectively, a division algebra), then A is called local (respectively, scalar local). Unless otherwise stated we are working with left modules and sometimes we use the term Aop-module for a right A-module where Aop is the opposite ring of A. A finite A-module means finitely generated over A. We use noetherian (respectively, artinian) for two-sided noetherian (respectively, two-sided artinian).

Abstract:Pólya's Positivstellensatz and Handelman's Positivstellensatz are known to be concrete instances of the abstract Archimedean Representation Theorem for (commutative unital) rings. We generalise the Archimedean Representation Theorem to modules over rings. For example, consider the module of all symmetric matrices with entries in a polynomial ring, also known as matrix polynomials. Pólya's Positivstellensatz and Handelman's Positivstellensatz had been generalised by Scherer and Hol, and Lê and Du' respectively to matrix polynomials, using the method of effective estimates from analysis. We show that these two Positivstellensätze for matrix polynomials are concrete instances of our Archimedean Representation Theorem in the case of the module of symmetric matrix polynomials over the polynomial ring.

Abstract:First, we prove an algebraization result for rig-smooth algebras over a general noetherian ring; this positively answers the question raised in [Sta24, Tag 0GAX]. Then we prove a general partial algebraization result in non-archimedean geometry. The result says that we can always algebraize a geometrically reduced affinoid rigid-analytic space in "one direction" in an appropriate sense. As an application of this result, we show the remaining cases of the Artin-Grothendieck Vanishing for affinoid algebras, which were previously conjectured in [BM21, §7]. This allows us to deduce a stronger version of the rigid-analytic Artin-Grothendieck Vanishing Conjecture (see [Han20, Conj. 1.2]) over a field of characteristic 0. Using a completely different set of ideas, we also obtain a weaker version of this conjecture over a field of characteristic p>0.

Some Sklyanin algebras are the kind of algebras considered. As an application, it is proved that any algebra derived equivalent to such kind of algebra, is Morita equivalent to it.

Abstract:We study absolutely Koszul algebras, Koszul algebras with the Backelin-Roos property and their behavior under standard algebraic operations. In particular, we identify some Veronese subrings of polynomial rings that have the Backelin-Roos property and conjecture that the list is indeed complete. Among other things, we prove that every universally Koszul ring defined by monomials has the Backelin-Roos property.

Abstract:We define a congruence module $\Psi_A(M)$ associated to a surjective $\mathcal O$-algebra morphism $\lambda\colon A \to \mathcal{O}$, with $\mathcal{O}$ a discrete valuation ring, $A$ a complete noetherian local $\mathcal{O}$-algebra regular at $\mathfrak{p}$, the kernel of $\lambda$, and $M$ a finitely generated $A$-module. We establish a numerical criterion for $M$ to have a free direct summand over $A$ of positive rank. It is in terms of the lengths of $\Psi_A(M)$ and the torsion part of $\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{p}^2$. It generalizes results of Wiles, Lenstra, and Diamond, that deal with the case when the codimension of $\mathfrak{p}$ is zero. Number theoretic applications include integral (non-minimal) $R=\mathbb T$ theorems in situations of positive defect conditional on certain standard conjectures. Here $R$ is a deformation ring parametrizing certain Galois representations and $\mathbb T$ is a Hecke algebra. An example is a modularity lifting for 2-dimensional $\ell$-adic Galois representations over an imaginary quadratic field. The proofs combine our commutative algebra results with a generalization due to Calegari and Geraghty of the patching method of Wiles and Taylor--Wiles and level raising arguments that go back to Ribet. The results provide new evidence in favor of the intriguing, and as yet fledgling, torsion analog of the classical Langlands correspondence. We also prove unconditional integral $R=\mathbb T$ results for Hecke algebras $\mathbb T$ acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves over $\mathbb Q$. This leads to a torsion Jacquet--Langlands correspondence comparing integral Hecke algebras acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves and modular curves. In this case the cohomology has abundant torsion and so our correspondence cannot be deduced by means of the classical Jacquet--Langlands correspondence.

Riemann-Roch for the ring $\mathbb Z$

Abstract:We show that by working over the absolute base $\mathbb S$ (the categorical version of the sphere spectrum) instead of $\mathbb S[\pm 1]$ improves our previous Riemann-Roch formula for $\overline{{\rm Spec\,}\mathbb Z}$. The formula equates the (integer-valued) Euler characteristic of an Arakelov divisor with the sum of the degree of the divisor (using logarithms with base 2) and the number $1$, thus confirming the understanding of the ring $\mathbb Z$ as a ring of polynomials in one variable over the absolute base $\mathbb S$, namely $\mathbb S[X], 1+1=X+X^2$.

Some Homological Conjectures Over Idealization Rings

Abstract:Let $(R,\mathfrak{m},k)$ be a Noetherian local ring and let $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module. The main focus of this paper is to give positive answers for some long-standing homological conjectures over the idealization ring $R\ltimes M$. First, if $N$ is a $R\ltimes k$-module, we show that the vanishing of $\operatorname{Ext}_{R\ltimes k}^{i}(N,N\oplus (R\ltimes k))$ for $i=1,2,3$ gives that $N$ is free, and this provides a sharpened version of the Auslander-Reiten conjecture over $R\ltimes k$. Also, we give a characterization of the Betti numbers of an $R$-module over the idealization ring $R\ltimes M$ and, as a biproduct, we derive that the Jorgensen-Leuschke conjecture holds true for $R\ltimes M$. Further, we show that the true of Buchsbaum-Eisenbud-Horrocks and Total Rank conjectures over $R$ implies the true over $R\ltimes M$. This establishes particular answers for both conjectures for modules with infinite projective dimension, especially when $R$ is regular or a complete intersection ring. As applications of the idealization ring theory, we show that the Zariski-Lipman conjecture holds for any ring $R$ provided the Betti numbers of the $R$-derivation module $\operatorname{Der}_k(R)$, seen as $R\ltimes k$-module, satisfy the inequality $\beta_{n}^{R\ltimes k}(\operatorname{Der}_k(R))\leq\beta_{n-1}^{R\ltimes k}(\operatorname{Der}_k(R))$ for some $n>0$. Some implications regarding the Herzog-Vasconcelos conjecture are also provided.

Efficient Algorithms for Finite $\mathbb{Z}$-Algebras

Abstract:For a finite $\mathbb{Z}$-algebra $R$, i.e., for a $\mathbb{Z}$-algebra which is a finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}$-module, we assume that $R$ is explicitly given by a system of $\mathbb{Z}$-module generators $G$, its relation module ${\rm Syz}(G)$, and the structure constants of the multiplication in $R$. In this setting we develop and analyze efficient algorithms for computing essential information about $R$. First we provide polynomial time algorithms for solving linear systems of equations over $R$ and for basic ideal-theoretic operations in $R$. Then we develop ZPP (zero-error probabilitic polynomial time) algorithms to compute the nilradical and the maximal ideals of 0-dimensional affine algebras $K[x_1,\dots,x_n]/I$ with $K=\mathbb{Q}$ or $K=\mathbb{F}_p$. The task of finding the associated primes of a finite $\mathbb{Z}$-algebra $R$ is reduced to these cases and solved in ZPPIF (ZPP plus one integer factorization). With the same complexity, we calculate the connected components of the set of minimal associated primes ${\rm minPrimes}(R)$ and then the primitive idempotents of $R$. Finally, we prove that knowing an explicit representation of $R$ is polynomial time equivalent to knowing a strong Gröbner basis of an ideal $I$ such that $R = \mathbb{Z}[x_1,\dots,x_n]/I$.

Abstract:We establish formulas for computation of the higher algebraic $K$-groups of the endomorphism rings of objects linked by a morphism in an additive category. Let ${\mathcal C}$ be an additive category, and let $Y\ra X$ be a covariant morphism of objects in ${\mathcal C}$. Then $K_n\big(_{\mathcal C}(X\oplus Y)\big)\simeq K_n\big(_{{\mathcal C},Y}(X)\big)\oplus K_n\big(_{\mathcal C}(Y)\big)$ for all $1\le n\in \mathbb{N}$, where $_{{\mathcal C},Y}(X)$ is the quotient ring of the endomorphism ring $_{\mathcal C}(X)$ of $X$ modulo the ideal generated by all those endomorphisms of $X$ which factorize through $Y$. Moreover, let $R$ be a ring with identity, and let $e$ be an idempotent element in $R$. If $J:=ReR$ is homological and $_RJ$ has a finite projective resolution by finitely generated projective $R$-modules, then $K_n(R)\simeq K_n(R/J)\oplus K_n(eRe)$ for all $n\in \mathbb{N}$. This reduces calculations of the higher algebraic $K$-groups of $R$ to those of the quotient ring $R/J$ and the corner ring $eRe$, and can be applied to a large variety of rings: Standardly stratified rings, hereditary orders, affine cellular algebras and extended affine Hecke algebras of type $\tilde{A}$.

Macaulay Posets and Rings

Abstract:Macaulay posets are posets in which an analog of the Kruskal-Katona Theorem holds. Macaulay rings (also called Macaulay-Lex rings) are rings in which an analog of Macaulay's Theorem for lex ideals holds. The study of both of these objects started with Macaulay almost a century ago. Since then, these two branches have developed separately over the past century, with the last link being the Clements-Lindström Theorem. For every ring that is the quotient of a polynomial ring by a homogeneous ideal we define the poset of monomials. Under certain conditions, we prove a Macaulay Correspondence Theorem, a ring is Macaulay if and only if its poset of monomials is Macaulay. Furthermore, the tensor product of rings corresponds to the Cartesian product of the posets of monomials. This allows us to transfer results between rings and posets. By using this translation, we give several answers to a problem posed by Mermin and Peeva, a positive answer to Hoefel's question about applying Macaulay poset theory to ring theory, and deduce several other results in algebra and combinatorics. A new proof of the Mermin-Murai Theorem on colored square free rings is presented by using star posets. We extend the Mermin-Murai Theorem to rings that are not square free. Using a result from Mermin and Peeva we give an answer to a question posed by Bezrukov and Leck. Some results of Chong also give answers to the Bezrukov-Leck problem. All of these results have a common feature. They involve the tensor product of rings whose Hasse graphs of the poset of monomials are trees. We call such rings, tree rings. We give a classification of Macaulay rings that are the tensor product of a tree ring. Finally, we show that there are Macaulay rings that are not the tensor product of tree rings, and present the first examples of Macaulay rings that are not quotients by a monomial ideal and not quotients by a toric ideal.

Abstract:The presented paper is a compendium or a kind of précis of relationships between the four classical theorems of mathematical analysis. More precisely, the first aim of this paper is to present the equivalence of the four classical theorems: the Hahn–Banach theorem, the Mazur–Orlicz theorem, the Markov–Kakutani fixed-point theorem and the von Neumann theorem on amenability of Abelian groups. The second purpose is to prove these equivalences in Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory with the axiom of choice replaced by the Boolean prime ideal theorem, from which we can also prove the Hahn–Banach theorem.

Abstract:We prove that if R is a principal ideal ring and A\in\M_n(R) is a matrix with trace zero, then A is a commutator, that is, A=XY-YX for some X,Y\in\M_n(R). This generalises the corresponding result over fields due to Albert and Muckenhoupt, as well as that over Z due to Laffey and Reams, and as a by-product we obtain new simplified proofs of these results. We also establish a normal form for similarity classes of matrices over PIDs, generalising a result of Laffey and Reams. This normal form is a main ingredient in the proof of the result on commutators.

On isomorphism of simplicial complexes and their related algebras

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a simple proof for the fact that two simplicial complexes are isomorphic if and only if their associated Stanley-Reisner rings, or their associated facet rings are isomorphic as $K$-algebras. As a consequence, we show that two graphs are isomorphic if and only if their associated edge rings are isomorphic as $K$-algebras. Based on an explicit $K$-algebra isomorphism of two Stanley-Reisner rings, or facet rings or edge rings, we present a fast algorithm to find explicitly the isomorphism of the associated simplicial complexes, or graphs.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a formula for fusion coefficients of affine Kac-Moody algebras first conjectured by Walton [Wal2], and rediscovered in [Fe]. It is a reformulation of the Frenkel-Zhu affine fusion rule theorem [FZ], written so that it can be seen as a beautiful generalization of the classical Parasarathy-Ranga Rao-Varadarajan tensor product theorem [PRV].

Abstract:Let $K\langle X\rangle =K\langle X_1,...,X_n\rangle$ be the free algebra of $n$ generators over a field $K$, and let $R\langle X\rangle =R\langle X_1,...,X_n\rangle$ be the free algebra of $n$ generators over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$. In this semi-expository paper, it is clarified that any monic Gröbner basis in $K\langle X\rangle$ may give rise to a monic Gröbner basis of the same type in $R\langle X\rangle$, and vice versa. This fact turns out that many important $R$-algebras have defining relations which form a monic Gröbner basis, and consequently, such $R$-algebras may be studied via a nice PBW structure theory as that developed for quotient algebras of $K\langle X\rangle$ in ([LWZ], [Li2, 3]).

Abstract:We show that the modular symbol $(0,\infty)$, considered as an element of the dual of Emerton's completed cohomology, interpolates Kato's Euler system at classical points, and we deduce from this a factorisation of Beilinson-Kato's system as a product of two symbols $(0,\infty)$ (an algebraic analog of Rankin's method). The proof uses the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for ${\mathbf GL}_2({\mathbf Q}_p)$ and Emerton's factorization of the completed cohomology of the tower of modular curves for which we provide a new proof resting upon the construction of a Kirillov model for the completed cohomology, and which we refine by imposing conditions at classical points; the existence of such a refinement is a manifestation of an analyticity property for $p$-adic periods of modular forms.

The cohomology of the nilCoxeter algebra

Abstract:The nilCoxeter algebra $\mathcal{N}S_n$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ is the algebra over $\mathbb{Z}$ with generators $Y_i$ ($1\leqslant i\leqslant n-1$), satisfying the braid relations $Y_iY_{i+1}Y_i=Y_{i+1}Y_iY_{i+1}$, $Y_iY_j=Y_jY_i$ ($|j-i|\geqslant 2$), together with the relations $Y_i^2=0$. We describe an explicit presentation for the cohomology ring $Z\cong\mathsf{Ext}^*_{\mathcal{N}S_n}(\mathbb{Z},\mathbb{Z})$, with $n-i$ new generators in degree $i$ for $0< i<n$, and all relations are quadratic. We show that this $\mathsf{Ext}$ ring is $\mathbb{Z}$-free, and that it is a semiprime Noetherian affine polynomial identity (PI) ring with Poincaré series $1/(1-t)^{n-1}$ and PI degree $2^{n-2}$. For any field of coefficients $\mathbf{k}$, we show that $\mathsf{Ext}^*_{\mathbf{k}\mathcal{N}S_n}(\mathbf{k},\mathbf{k})$ is $\mathbf{k}\otimes_{\mathbb{Z}} Z$. Similar results hold for other finite Coxeter types. In the final section we show that $Z$ is a Koszul algebra whose Koszul dual is a signed version of the nilcactus algebra, an algebra closely related to the cactus group.

Abstract:Generalizing the polynomial web category, we introduce a diagrammatic $\Bbbk$-linear monoidal category, the affine web category, for any commutative ring $\Bbbk$. Integral bases consisting of elementary diagrams are obtained for the affine web category and its cyclotomic quotient categories. Connections between cyclotomic web categories and finite $W$-algebras are established, leading to a diagrammatic presentation of idempotent subalgebras of $W$-Schur algebras introduced by Brundan-Kleshchev. The affine web category will be used as a basic building block of another $\Bbbk$-linear monoidal category, the affine Schur category, formulated in a sequel.
