Abstract:In this paper we consider the attainability of the optimal constant associated to the fractional Hardy-Sobolev type embedding which is defined as where , and , , the latter being the best constant in the fractional Hardy inequality on , is the fractional critical Sobolev exponent. The technique that we use to prove the existence of extremals for is based on blow-up analysis argument combined with a variational method. Further, as an application of the inequality, we prove an existence result for the critical fractional -Laplacian equation with Hardy potential and involving continuous nonlinearities having quasicritical growth.

Abstract:We give a partial negative answer to a question left open in a previous work by Brasco and the first and third-named authors concerning the sharp constant in the fractional Hardy inequality on convex sets. Our approach has a geometrical flavor and equivalently reformulates the sharp constant in the limit case $p=1$ as the Cheeger constant for the fractional perimeter and the Lebesgue measure with a suitable weight. As a by-product, we obtain new lower bounds on the sharp constant in the $1$-dimensional case, even for non-convex sets, some of which optimal in the case $p=1$.

Abstract:Using the result of the error estimate of the simple extended Newton method established in the present paper for solving abstract inequality systems, we study the error bound property of approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems on Banach spaces with the involved function F being Fréchet differentiable and its derivative F^' satisfying the center-Lipschitz condition (not necessarily the Lipschitz condition) around a point x 0 . Under some mild conditions, we establish results on the existence of the solutions, and the error bound properties for approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems. Applications of these results to finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities on Banach spaces are presented and the error bound properties of approximate solutions of finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities are also established. Our results extend the corresponding results in [ 3 , 18 , 19 ].
On fractional Hardy-type inequalities in general open sets

Abstract:We show that, when $sp>N$, the sharp Hardy constant $\mathfrak{h}_{s,p}$ of the punctured space $\mathbb R^N\setminus\{0\}$ in the Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı space provides an optimal lower bound for the Hardy constant $\mathfrak{h}_{s,p}(\Omega)$ of an open $\Omega\subsetneq \mathbb R^N$. The proof exploits the characterization of Hardy's inequality in the fractional setting in terms of positive local weak supersolutions of the relevant Euler-Lagrange equation and relies on the construction of suitable supersolutions by means of the distance function from the boundary of $\Omega$. Moreover, we compute the limit of $\mathfrak{h}_{s,p}$ as $s\nearrow 1$, as well as the limit when $p \nearrow \infty$. Finally, we apply our results to establish a lower bound for the non-local eigenvalue $\lambda_{s,p}(\Omega)$ in terms of $\mathfrak{h}_{s,p}$ when $sp>N$, which, in turn, gives an improved Cheeger inequality whose constant does not vanish as $p\nearrow \infty$.

Abstract:We prove that a pointwise fractional Hardy inequality implies a fractional Hardy inequality, defined via a Gagliardo-type seminorm. The proof consists of two main parts. The first one is to characterize the pointwise fractional Hardy inequality in terms of a fractional capacity density condition. The second part is to show the deep open-endedness or self-improvement property of the fractional capacity density, which we accomplish in the setting of a complete geodesic space equipped with a doubling measure. These results are new already in the standard Euclidean setting.

On the asymptotic behaviour of the fractional Sobolev seminorms in metric measure spaces: asymptotic volume ratio, volume entropy and rigidity

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behaviour of suitably defined seminorms in general metric measure spaces. As a particular case we provide new and shorter proofs of the Maz'ya-Shaposhnikova's theorem on the asymptotic behaviour of the fractional Sobolev $s$-seminorm, in the setting of metric measure spaces and with general mollifiers, as well as of the Ludwig's result on finite dimensional Banach spaces. Our result also provides new spaces satisfying an asymptotic formula and it also builds a link between the asymptotic formula for functions and the asymptotic volume ratio of a metric measure space. In addition, we prove two related rigidity results for metric measure spaces with synthetic Ricci curvature bound which are new even in the smooth setting.

Abstract:We determine the sharp constants for the fractional Sobolev inequalities associated with the conformally invariant fractional powers $\mathcal{L}_{s}(0<s<1)$ of the sublaplacian on H-type groups. From these inequalities we derive a sharp log-Sobolev inequality by considering a limiting case and a sharp Sobolev trace inequality. The later extends to this context the result of Frank, González, Monticelli and Tan (Adv. Math, 2015).

Integer Optimal Control with Fractional Perimeter Regularization

Abstract:Motivated by many applications, optimal control problems with integer controls have recently received a significant attention. Some state-of-the-art work uses perimeter-regularization to derive stationarity conditions and trust-region algorithms. However, the discretization is difficult in this case because the perimeter is concentrated on a set of dimension $d - 1$ for a domain of dimension $d$. This article proposes a potential way to overcome this challenge by using the fractional nonlocal perimeter with fractional exponent $0<\alpha<1$. In this way, the boundary integrals in the perimeter regularization are replaced by volume integrals. Besides establishing some non-trivial properties associated with this perimeter, a $\Gamma$-convergence result is derived. This result establishes convergence of minimizers of fractional perimeter-regularized problem, to the standard one, as the exponent $\alpha$ tends to 1. In addition, the stationarity results are derived and algorithmic convergence analysis is carried out for $\alpha \in (0.5,1)$ under an additional assumption on the gradient of the reduced objective. The theoretical results are supplemented by a preliminary computational experiment. We observe that the isotropy of the total variation may be approximated by means of the fractional perimeter functional.

Optimal asymptotic lower bound for stability of fractional Sobolev inequality and the stability of Log-Sobolev inequality on the sphere

Abstract:We establish the optimal asymptotic lower bound for the stability of fractional Sobolev inequality: \begin{equation}\label{Sob sta ine} \left\|(-\Delta)^{s/2} U \right\|_2^2 - \mathcal S_{s,n} \| U\|_{\frac{2n}{n-2s}}^2\geq C_{n,s} d^{2}(U, \mathcal{M}_s), \end{equation} where $\mathcal{M}_s$ is the set of maximizers of the fractional Sobolev inequality of order $s$, $s\in (0, 1)$ and $C_{n,s}$ denotes the optimal lower bound of stability. We prove that the optimal lower bound $C_{n,s}$ behaves asymptotically at the order of $\frac{1}{n}$ when $n\rightarrow +\infty$ for any fixed $s\in (0,1)$. This extends the work by Dolbeault-Esteban-Figalli-Frank-Loss [19] on the stability of the first order Sobolev inequality and quantify the asymptotic behavior for lower bound of stability of fractional Sobolev inequality established by the current author's previous work in [15] in the case of $s\in (0, 1)$. Moreover, $C_{n,s}$ behaves asymptotically at the order of $s$ when $s\rightarrow 0$ for any given dimension $n$. (See Theorem 1.1.) As an application of this asymptotic estimate as $s\to 0$ and through the end-point differentiation method, we also derive the global stability for the log-Sobolev inequality on the sphere established by Beckner in [3,4] with the optimal asymptotic lower bound on the sphere. (see Theorem 1.6). This sharpens the earlier work by the authors in [14] where only the local stability for the log-Sobolev inequality on the sphere was proved. We also obtain the asymptotically optimal lower bound for the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality when $s\to 0$ for fixed dimension $n$ and when $n\to \infty$ for fixed $s\in (0, 1)$ (See Theorem 1.4 and the subsequent Remark 1.5).

On the Obstacle Problem in Fractional Generalised Orlicz Spaces

Abstract:We consider the one and the two obstacles problems for the nonlocal nonlinear anisotropic $g$-Laplacian $\mathcal{L}_g^s$, with $0<s<1$. We prove the strict T-monotonicity of $\mathcal{L}_g^s$ and we obtain the Lewy-Stampacchia inequalities. We consider the approximation of the solutions through semilinear problems, for which we prove a global $L^\infty$-estimate, and we extend the local Hölder regularity to the solutions of the obstacle problems in the case of the fractional $p(x,y)$-Laplacian operator. We make further remarks on a few elementary properties of related capacities in the fractional generalised Orlicz framework, with a special reference to the Hilbertian nonlinear case in fractional Sobolev spaces.

Abstract:Consider a complete asymptotically flat 3-manifold $M$ with non-negative scalar curvature and non-empty minimal boundary $\Sigma$. Fix a number $1 < p < 3$. We derive monotone quantities for $p$-harmonic functions on $M$ which become constant on Schwarzschild. These monotonicity formulas imply a sharp mass-capacity estimate relating the ADM mass of $M$ with the $p$-capacity of $\Sigma$ in $M$, which was first proved by Xiao using weak inverse mean curvature flow.

Some geometric inequalities by the ABP method

Abstract:In this paper, we apply the so-called Alexandrov-Bakelman-Pucci (ABP) method to establish some geometric inequalities. We first prove a logarithmic Sobolev inequality for closed $n$-dimensional minimal submanifolds $\Sigma$ of $\mathbb S^{n+m}$. As a consequence, it recovers the classical result that $|\mathbb S^n| \leq |\Sigma|$ for $m = 1,2$. Next, we prove a Sobolev-type inequality for positive symmetric two-tensors on smooth domains in $\mathbb R^n$ which was established by D. Serre when the domain is convex. In the last application of the ABP method, we formulate and prove an inequality related to quermassintegrals of closed hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. Upper bounds are obtained for the Newtonian capacity of compact sets in [math] in terms of the perimeter of the [math]-parallel neighborhood of [math]. For compact, convex sets in [math] with a [math] boundary the Newtonian capacity is bounded from above by [math], where [math] is the integral of the mean curvature over the boundary of [math] with equality if [math] is a ball. For compact, convex sets in [math] with non-empty interior the Newtonian capacity is bounded from above by [math] with equality if [math] is a ball. Here, [math] is the perimeter of [math] and [math] is its measure. A quantitative refinement of the latter inequality in terms of the Fraenkel asymmetry is also obtained. An upper bound is obtained for expected Newtonian capacity of the Wiener sausage in [math] with radius [math] and time length [math].

Abstract:In this work, we prove an existence result for an optimal partition problem of the form $$\min \{F_s(A_1,\dots,A_m)\colon A_i \in \mathcal{A}_s, \, A_i\cap A_j =\emptyset \mbox{ for } i\neq j\},$$ where $F_s$ is a cost functional with suitable assumptions of monotonicity and lowersemicontinuity, $\mathcal{A}_s$ is the class of admissible domains and the condition $A_i\cap A_j =\emptyset$ is understood in the sense of the Gagliardo $s$-capacity, where $0<s<1$. Examples of this type of problem are related to the fractional eigenvalues. In addition, we prove some type of convergence of the $s$-minimizers to the minimizer of the problem with $s=1$, studied in \cite{Bucur-Buttazzo-Henrot}.

Abstract:In their seminal work, Cordero-Erausquin, Nazaret and Villani (Adv Math 182(2):307-332, 2004) proved sharp Sobolev inequalities in Euclidean spaces via Optimal Transport , raising the question whether their approach is powerful enough to produce sharp Sobolev inequalities also on Riemannian manifolds. By using -optimal transport approach, the compact case has been successfully treated by Cavalletti and Mondino (Geom Topol 21:603-645, 2017), even on metric measure spaces verifying the synthetic lower Ricci curvature bound. In the present paper we affirmatively answer the above question for noncompact Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature; namely, by using Optimal Transport theory with quadratic distance cost, sharp -Sobolev and -logarithmic Sobolev inequalities (both for and ) are established, where the sharp constants contain the asymptotic volume ratio arising from precise asymptotic properties of the Talentian and Gaussian bubbles, respectively. As a byproduct, we give an alternative, elementary proof to the main result of do Carmo and Xia (Math 140:818-826, 2004) and subsequent results, concerning the quantitative volume non-collapsing estimates on Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature that support Sobolev inequalities.

Abstract:We establish equivalence between the boundedness of specific supremum operators and the optimality of function spaces in Sobolev embeddings acting on domains in ambient Euclidean space with a prescribed isoperimetric behavior. Our approach is based on exploiting known relations between higher-order Sobolev embeddings and isoperimetric inequalities. We provide an explicit way to compute both the optimal domain norm and the optimal target norm in a Sobolev embedding. Finally, we apply our results to higher-order Sobolev embeddings on John domains and on domains from the Maz'ya classes. Furthermore, our results are partially applicable to embeddings involving product probability spaces.
